Fun Long Lasting Durable Vehicle

My Eclipse is an RS with the 2 liter 420A engine, 5 speed, A/C, manual windows, and rear defroster. The 420A (2.0) non-turbo engine sounds good, performs excellent, and gets good mileage. Vehicle is cool looking and fun to drive. Make sure maintainence was performed every 30K mi including the timing belt at every 60K mi. Mine has been very reliable with minimal cost to operate.

I got my car just over 2 years ago,it had just over 113,000 miles on it.I now have 129,800 on it and it runs perfectly.I don't know why people say the millage is ok,I think its wonderful I'm getting 28 in town and 36 on the Highway.I also realized by adding a bit of methanol to the fuel I get another 5 miles to the gallon. My 96 is as economic as any of these newer cars, and bigger too.And only has a 2.0 liter motor. The key to millage is a good cold air intake! Also a good Cat back exhaust system.

My eclipse was a very good car to me all i have to do is keep gas in it and change the oil and it will run. The only problems i encountered were the oil pan gasket leaking. the door handles broke off and then my alternator went out on me. On my way up a hill the little clip holding my shift cables popped out and i got stuck in 2nd. I fixed it and drove it another 20,000 miles still going with 213,000 and more to come.

I have had my car for a month. I got it from my uncle who bought if from an auction, so I have no idea what it's history is. But I do know that it was originally bought in NC (I'm in MI)...explains most of the 142k miles on it. Sometimes it won't shift into reverse or first gear, and it takes two or three tries to cold start the car. I believe that the charcoal gray paint is not the original, and the coilover springs that were left on it make for too harsh of a ride. But other than that, I love the car. The car picks up and pulls pretty quickly. The turbo takes a sec to spool but once it does, it's a very fast car for a 4cyl. The BOV sounds amazing (equivalent to the sound of air brakes)

As a huge Mustang 5.0 fan of the 80's, I was frustrated that all three of the GT's I owned left me on the side of the road at some point in time, so I bought a 1992 Eclipse GSX. This car was so much better in every respect, POWER, STYLING, HANDLING and Comfort, especially since I'm 6'4". My insurance agent also loved me because of all the safety features including the auto seatbelts, ABS and AWD. I drove this car until 120000 miles, than traded it in on the 1996 GSX. WOW. I couldn't imagine my car could be any better, but I was wrong. You can tell how great this car is by looking in the want ads...they are NEVER there.

Beauty at a cost

1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX Turbo 2dr Hatchback AWD
3 of 3 people found this review helpful

I've had two 2nd gen GSXs. These cars are very nice looking, the AWD is great for performance in the snow, wet and dry. The turbo engine has pretty good torque, but it has noticeable turbo lag and the engine runs out of breath at about 6000 RPM, so the fun power band is actually relatively narrow. The mechanical and electrical systems on the car are far from reliable. The dashboard design, while attractive, is ergonomically flawed as the shift lever blocks the stereo. There are squeaks and rattles from interior panes and suspension parts, rain can leak into the cabin. If you're tall, cars with a sun roof can be a tight fit.

Watch out for Crankwalk!!!!

This is a great car, fast, cool looking, dreamy handling, comfortable, but, every eclipse GS-T or GSX from 1995-1999 has a good possibility of coming down with "crankwalk". It's a $4500 problem with no real permanent solution. Trust me, it's enough to make you NOT want to buy this great car. Take it from someone who has gone through this and done A LOT of research. Sorry folks. I love my GSX, but it's bittersweet. I'd recommend not taking your chances. I paid the price with my ignorance.

The Eclipse RS has an I4 engine with a 5 speed transmittion. It certainly can get out of its way but it also has a sporty design which econ boxes can't match. I like the basic design with roll up window. My model has the optional 17" wheels which improve handling and look great. The car had an head gasket problem but the dealership replaced the head gasket and the timing belt and water pump. So beware of head gaskets issue before your purchase.

I currently have 198,000 miles on my GST, mostly freeway driving. Overall, I had good experience with the car. I went through 4 sets of tires and changed & resurfaced the front brakes 4 times. Lots of oil changes. The front rotors do get wrapped easily. Major expense was replacing the manual transmission and clutch at 140K. Recently, my car developed another problem. It stalls when the engine is hot and cannot be restarted until the engine cools off. Thus, I have to tow it for repairs. I am hoping that it is nothing major.

96 GS-T ---160 Mph

I like the abilty to make it look any way I want. (body kits) But inside feels cramped and if people sit in back they block the rear speakers. Turbo can beat out 6 cyl up to 110mph but it tops out because of the 4 cyl 2.0 ltr engine. My max speed was 135mps flat road with decent tires but you could hit 160 down hill. (yes i did do it he he) Worst are the brakes they go the fastest because of poor design i think. replace the front roters every 15,000 miles due to warping but if you buy the good ones with holes and air pockets they last at least 25,000 and deffinately use non-metalic pads.

Overall, this car is by far my best investment ever. It looks great, and drives fantastic. It provides great performance and decent handeling. The only downside to my car is the gas milage while driving it hard. I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. Upgrading parts on it is fairly cheap, and makes it even better.

So far, I had good experience with the car. The 60,000 mile service made me to reach deep in my pocket, but it's a fun car to drive... I bought it brand new and still a current owner. It's too bad that they got rid of the turbo in the new ones, since I love the turbo. If anyone can find a descent one with low mileage, I strongly recomend the car. However, the car seems to wear our little faster than other brands so becareful putting too many miles on the car.

This car is fun, fast and looks good. The 140hp I4 is just enough to give it that sports car feeling. Its a dependable car for a daily driver but expect to pay for new rotors ever 20k miles. Granted its not as fast and quick as the GS-T and GSX but it is still fast, topping out at 135mph. Street racing its ok, it lags a little but still gets the job done. running low 16's high 15's 1/4 mile time. Gas mi is decent. 22city 28-30 highway. roomy front seats for a sports car but cramped back seats for anyone, including my 7yr old little brother.

Fast Car That Takes Money Even Faster...

Well I just had bought my 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse only a month earlier and all the sudden a white mist starts coming out of the air vents and it fogs up like you wouldn't believe. I come to find out it has a bad heater core and it's $800 to fix because it's embedded in the dash. That wasn't fun at all. Although the car stinks to fix up, it is one heck of a sports car. It is easy to customize to your liking and I like most of the stock features. It is quite speedy for a 5-speed 4-cyl. vehicle, but I always have the fear that if i go too fast something is going to happen to a head gasket or the engine is going to over heat. Overall I would say it is a fun car but you better be ready to pay to fix a lot of stuff.

Beware the Eclipse

I bought my 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse as an upgrade to a 1990 Toyota Tercel. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but was a huge mistake. First the alternator went; then when dealership replaced alternator, they left serpentine pulleys 1/4" off mark. Belts would then pop off and shred every 3 months for over 2 years (my personal mechanic finally fixed the issue). The casing for the exterior mirror adjusters broke next. Then, one month ago, the exterior driver's door handle broke. A month after that, the same thing happened on the passenger side. All along, I've had had an issue with the idle dropping out and the car stalling when the brakes were used during damp or wet weather. Car should have been fun to drive, but was a piece of junk!

I fell in love with this car when I was 11. It looks so good! So I bought one and it is really fun to drive. Not too slow, awesome handling...when it's running. I have owned this for 3 months and drive lightly. It has literally spent more time broken than fixed. All of the engine/cooling components are cheap, not very well put together and need replacing evey 60,000 miles. You basically have to buy a new car at 120,000 miles (which is right when I purchased mine). I have bought mine twice already and it is currently sitting in my driveway waiting for me to flush the cooling system and find out why I'm overheating.

I got an Eclipse RS from a guy from Chicago who considerd the insurance in Toronto to be insane. The exterior of the car is in satisfactory condition and I accepted the price of $5,000 CAD. However, I had to get the safety test done myself which cost me about $350 CAD. The door lock on the driver's side must be changed and it needs a new day time runing light control system installed to comply with the Canadian traffic regulations. Otherwise, the car is in good shape, according to my mechanic.

Power for a price

In the course of owning this car, I have become a DSM mechanic. It is important to realize that anytime you attempt to push HP levels beyond what the manufacturer intended, you sacrifice reliability. However, I have been more unlucky than most. I was diagnosed with crank walk 1 month after purchase. $3000 later and a few modifications the tranny exploded. Now another motor later, and replacement of most moving parts, and at ~400WHP most of my issues have been resolved. As a commuter car or grocery getter, this is not the ideal car. As a platform to create a very respectable 4 cylinder drag car it is ideal. For that power you pay the price in reliabity.

I bought this car for the simple fact of how beautiful it is. BIG MISTAKE! I bought the car at 145,000 miles, and like every other Eclipse after "Fast & Furious" came out, some kid had it and ran the crud out of it. Its suspension is BAD, its engine is BAD, its fuel system is BAD, and the service / parts are EXPENSIVE if you go to the dealer. Also, if you tell the dealer that the parts you bought aren't lasting as long as their warranty says it should, they actually cuss at you. I was called a LAZY bum when I told them my ball-joints lasted less than two years, (20,000 mi). Do not buy this car unless you have a lot of money to throw around!

I bought this 3 years ago, after a nice woman wrecked my last car for me by driving into the front of me. Yes, it looks amazing, the design is sleek and smooth and definitely the best year for the Eclipse. 5 Speed non-turbo 2.0L DOHC is okay. 140hp FWD.. as mentioned in plenty of reviews, the rotors are horrendous. I have so much shaking I cannot stand it right now. I must have bought this at a horrible time in the life of the car (about 89,000 miles) as CV axles, lower control arms (as well as the tires the axles and arms ate through) ate me alive at about 100,000. It can get out of its own way, but not really anyone else's. Gas mileage is only okay for I-4. A good get-to-work or schooler.

I bought a new GS-T in burnt orange with leather, sun-roof and 5-speed. I thought it was one of the prettiest cars I've ever owned and I got compliments on its looks up til when I traded it in 2001. The only thing that ever went wrong with the car was the outside door handle broke at about 70,000 miles. It was a lot of fun to drive, very fast, stuck like glue in corners and got great gas mileage (25-30).

This car has so much power stock, and it drives like a dream. It pulls so hard off the line by the time the turbo kicks in you are already screaming by! The stock T-25 turbo is a little on the small side, but it does spool up fast, minimal turbo lag. The motor can handle more boost as is, and you can add a boost controller for 20 bucks to crank it up.

I purchased the car when it was 2 yrs. old and had 25K miles. At the time of purchase, I also included the extended maintenance plan, which I highly recommend and which more than paid for itself over the years. My car is a copper color, which is very unusual and definitely gets attention. I had cruise control & power sun roof installed and have loved driving this car ever since. I have had many people tell me that they like this body style much better than the newer one (and I agree). Since the car now had 70K miles, and is paid for, I hope she (yes, she!) will continue to carry me for a few more years.

This car is definitely fun to drive at first, but not to long after i bought it, things started going wrong. i don't know how many miles are on it, as the odometer rolls over 1.4 miles for every mile it goes, but i have had to replace the computer, the shocks have gone to crap, and many things on the interior have fallen apart. I also have a highly modified 96 eclipse RS (i did a japanese jdm 4g63t engine swap with many upgraded options including bigger turbo) and it is extremely fast (i have beaten trans ams, lost to z06 vettes) for a 4-cylinder and handles well, but even the japanese engine isn't very reliable.

I bought this car in June 2002 with 99,000 miles on it. I have not had my car for 3 months due to waiting on the claims process to replace the cylinder head and camshafts ($2000 repair estimat). The 2nd day I had the car the torque converter went out and had to be replaced. I've had to have all belts replaced and pulleys. The inside door handle fell off once I had the car for about a month, the sunroof won't slide open/closed anymore (that took about 2 months since ownership to break), and the right window is about to break-it takes about 10 minutes to roll down the window. Other than that, what a great car!

I absolutely LOVE this car! I bought this car in 1997 when it had 36,000 miles on it. It now has 192,000 and still starts right up even on the coldest of days. Besides routine maintenance, I have never had to dump any money into this girl. Unfortunately, the Northeastern winters have taken their toll on the body, as it now has extensive rust damage on the undercarriage, including a significant hole in the exhaust...but she is STILL going! As I face the inevitable and begin shopping for a newer car, I will grieve the loss of this old friend.

This car has a very bad rap or I just lucked out. Bought w/ 43K, it just turned 80K; mechanically it has been a dream. Turbo needs frequent oil changes (2K to 2.5K per). Tune @ 60Kmi. was expensive. Ball joints recalled as a freebie. Body parts a bit shoddy; all still works but things like the cruise control button don't always work on the first press -- finally does and it's ok for a day. Moisture problems??? A/C, heat are great. Tiny things go wrong. Engine/drive train fab. Turbo gives a kick that current models don't have. On the road it is rock solid. Up to this mileage, the Eclipse is the only trouble-free and reliable car I've ever owned.

I've had a great experience with this car so far. No major difficulties at all.

This model is most wanted model, but the engine, tranny, and car in general were just the worst. At first this car ran great, got decent fuel economy, good shifts, and a beautiful BOV sound from the turbo. Then came an easy winter and this car fell apart on me. :( I took very good care of it. Religious oil changes, new coolant, tranny fluid, filters the regular stuff. I even bought an Apexi N1 exhaust for this car. Made it sound so sweet. The car went through highways mostly and one day the check engine light appeared. Oxygen sensor was my thinking ona 125k car. Changed them and it went away. Day later the alternator and suspension itself broke. Not even TLC will keep this car alive.

Everybody hears about the reputation these cars have, but people who have experience will tell you different. If the car is taken care of, this car is awesome. It has the tried and true 4G63 which can be made powerful with ease. The '95 model has an EEPROM ECU and no CAS so it will be a positive for modders. Also, since its a '95 and AWD you are exempt from OBDII test and dyno test. This is the best year, just do the conversion and you are set.

I bought this Eclipse a little over a year ago and loved it to death. It had 115K on it with 14K on a rebuilt engine and I did not have any problems with it whatsoever. I brought the miles up to 128k and could tell this car had a LOT of life left in it if it wasn't for a truck plowing into it and totaling it! The seats were very comfortable (back seat space is limited, but the seats are so cushy!), very large trunk, sporty but cute exterior design, and good gas mileage (close to 400/tank with mostly highway miles). Only downsides were that U-turns were a little difficult, a somewhat large blind spot on the side, and the shift knob came very close to the CD deck which was annoying.

I bought my GST new in 95, have accumulated 124,000 miles on the odometer, with very few problems. I have modified alot under the hood and undercarrage, and still, no real problems to mention. The only major problems I've had, were the driver's side door handle breaking, and, now, the driver's side auto-door lock malfunctioning. I've got to say, it's one heck of a car, especially for the money. It'll take Mustangs and Camaros no problem, and handles like a dream.

I bought this in 1998 and definitely got my moneys worth! It was a base model, but had a spoiler and sunroof and I added a nicer cd system. The car was very reliable for me driving back and forth to school/work and home. I loved the dark green and how it can fit in just about any parking spot! Also got great gas mileage! While trying to avoid an accident my car ended up over an embankment and hit 8 trees- the car was a mess, but completely took the impact. I broke the front and rear axles, both bumbers were gone and every body panel dented and I...bruised my index finger! GREAT crumple zones! I'm buying a '98 eclipse tomorrow!
