Why not add a turbo

I can't say enough about this car. Although in the bone stock form it leaves something to be desired. Handling:it is great. Add an aftermarket strut bar and coilover style springs and your golden. The interior is very comfortable withit's reclineable bucket seats and easily accessible console. The exterior is one of those things that makes this car so great. It looks as aggressive as some of those $30k and up sports cars. Now here's a secret not many people know, put the cylinder head from a turbo on this engine block and guess what, you can bolt-up the gst/gsx turbo and your non-turbo 2.4l spyder is now a turbo hp machine. Overall a great car.

The moment I drove this car I bought it. It has stunning looks and handling, awesome exhaust note and the head turning appeal. Yes my top leaks but a small price to pay for such a exciting car. I have 93,000 on it and all original parts, I have never had a more reliable car. I drive this car every day and it never gets old I recommend this car to anyone who wants a sexy sport convertible that gets great gas mileage.

1998 RED Hot Mitsubishi Eclipse GST

I bought my Eclipse in October of 1998 and have loved driving it whenever I get the chance to take it out. I love to throw the top down turn up the stereo and let this car take me wherever I am going. I have 128,000 miles on my eclipse and it looks like the day I brought it home! This car is a real eye catcher. I was pulled over and the office didn't believe that I had given him the right insurance card so he asked for the card for the new car, I told him it had 98,000 mile on it and he still had to look at the odometer. No problems just maintain it. I still have the original exhaust and everything! My kids and their friends have always loved riding in it too.

This was a great car and it was a lot of fun to drive with the top down. although, I live in Florida and you would think I would have the top down all the time, but I didn't! With the humidity down here, I would need the AC on and with how rain here is so unpredictable, it would leak through the soft top, it was so annoying!

The car is amazingly fun to drive, and I've got friends asking for rides all the time. Only problem with it, as far as the ride goes, is that the suspension is very tight. For a little four-cylinder, non-turbo, it's got amazing kick. There's one problem with this car, and it's absolutely huge, almost a deal-breaker, and it's the top quality. Top leaks like no other in a rainstorm, flooding the rear top cavity, creating standing water. Car smells nasty afterwards. Upholstery has wonderful endurance from the water damage, though, and still looks fantastic. Also, top goes down hesitantly with some startling clicking, and needs a little help to get started going back up. Probably the motor.

This Car is great only if maintained!

This vehicle is amazing on the road it looks great, runs fast for a 4 cylinder, and has great fuel economy. The car can pick up speeds up to 100 MPH on a slow rise it'll do great if you hit it in 4 seconds your going to destroy your engine. In stop-n-go traffic it's beast. If your young and you drive one of these babies then people will give you dirty looks, but that's to be expected. This car can turn sour quickly so maintenance is key and it's not as expensive as people might think if you do it about every month.

This car HAS HORRIBLE PERFORMANCE. NEVER BUY THE GS. BUY THE GS-T. It looks like an exotic, but no perofmance to back it up. EXCELLENT STYLING. one of the best looking cars on the road, over the BMW and stuff like that. VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. There might as well be NO REAR SEATS! EVEN if you are little, you feel horrible in the back.

Leaked oil from day 1 & hole rubbed through the top from lack of support rail padding - dealer had it for 2 weeks. Factory radio went out in the 2nd year. Most of the interior plastic has cracked and has been replaced - some several times. Drivers sided door switch panel just fell down inside the door one day. No anti-seize used on the front hub splines, so I had to use an axle puller which destroyed them when they were required to be removed. $700+ dollars for a timing belt ever 60K miles. No drip edge on roof, so rain leaks in on seats when opening doors. Soft top and headliner had to be replaced after 4 years - went aftermarket from Kee tops and a local upholstery shop

Worst car I have ever driven! I hate it. It caused me more trouble than any car I have ever known. Do not buy it. All Mitsubishi's suck, everyone that I know that owns one has a lot of problems with it. First my convertable roof top leaked. It leaked so much it felt like there wasn't even a roof there. Because of this, it molded my seats and floor boards. Parts randomly fall off. Part of my body kit fell off, door handle has fallen off twice, key hole fell through the door, plastic parts inside fell off or broke, etc. Now, at barely 120K miles, transmission goes out. Battery sucks. Timing belt squeals alllll the time, replaced it 7 times, still no change. CD player went out too. CRAP CAR!!!

I bought my 98 GS-T Spyder for my 50th b'day. Very fun to drive but pushing the clutch in Atlanta traffic got old. Finally let my teenage son drive it to school for his Sr year. Had to have the valve guide replace, seems to be typical for Mits. engines. Recently the throw out bearing seized up so had to cough up $900 for new clutch kit. Just started driving again and enjoying it while summer traffic is a little lighter. Yes, the front speakers went awol but I replaced with inexpensive set of Jensens from Auto Zone that sound great. Convertible top and brackets are now in need of repair.

Bought a GS automatic transmission Spyder version with 47,000 miles in Nov 2011, in beautiful glossy shape inside and out by the original owner who had kept it as a garaged weekend toy. At purchase it idled rough and would tend to die on startup, replaced the ECU with a $200 EBay replacement unit taken from an identical junker. All plastic door handle also had been previously broken off and superglued back in place, I snapped it back off almost immediately, replaced it with blister-packed unit from Autozone (that says something) reinforced by an aftermarket metal reinforcement kit. Changed out the timing belt (you don't want it to break from age) and WOW - ONE FUN CAR FOR A YEAR NOW!!

i absolutely love my spyder. i bought it in august 2010 as an 18th birthday present to myself for college. Black paint, black top, 80K miles - are you kidding me!? i HAD to have it! I've had mitsu's in the past, i know they usually require a decent amount of attention. so as soon as i bought it, i replaced the top, tires, radiator, brakes, clutch, clutch masters, and numerous other things. have had no problems with it. it's at about 112K, and the timing belt is in about to be replaced, as well as the engine/trans mounts.. i will not hesitate to say that this car is not for everybody. interior is small, it needs TLC, and things break on it, just like all cars. very happy with my spyder :)

I bought my gst new back in july of 98. Since then I've added 141,000 miles. I love the look and performance of this car. It still brings a smile to my face everyday I get in it. I also have an extended warranty which has covered almost $3k in repairs so far. This is an average at best car reliability wise. But very fun to drive. Back seat is a bit cramped. Trunk space is small.

Well, I got my '98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS-T about a month ago, and ever since people have been asking for rides or drives. The fact is, it's a chick magnet-the issue of no backseat space it totally true, even a midget would have trouble getting back there. I could really care less if it has space to take 4 people, the point is-it can carry a girl in the passenger seat. This is an awesome looking car; mine came fitted with a loud blow-off valve which makes it all the more fun to rev up. The only problem I have with it is the first tank of gas I used, I got about 160 miles out of a full tank which equates to roughly 10 mpg, which is terrible. I dont know if its my gas tank sensor or what but this definitely isn't a 10 mpg car.

I am the second owner of this car and the only thing I had to fix was the alternator and that was recently. My car has 140,000 miles on it and it still runs great. I didn't drive it for about two of the six years that I've had it, but I put roughly about 30,000 miles or more on it every other year. I wish it could last forever.

Well I bought an eclipse syder gst with 48,000 miles, and I think the GS-T is reliable and also fast. I have won so many races, I picked up a lot of girls and I have no problems with it. When u first drive the gst it feels fast but then you don't even notice until you drive a normal eclipse. I think the eclipse spyder gst will last me for a long time.

I bought it for $700 as a replacement of my Suburban as a daily driver. Gets decent fuel economy if you don't drive aggressively. Mine needs some cosmetic work since the previous owner did a little damage to it. Engine has 150,000 miles and still runs solid. It passed smog (California) with no issues. It is definitely fun to drive and not bad for a 13+ year old car. I am mechanically inclined so I may not complain if I have minor issues that others may perceive as a bad thing. Every car has issues if not taken care of properly. Oh and I have a good mechanic available for help with troubleshooting.

I bought this car, thinking it would be a nice reliable ride. Another plus was that I thought it was imported; boy was I wrong. I soon discovered that the top leaked like a river (2 days after purchase), and the transmission shifted erratically. My mechanic said these cars are disasters (engine leaks, failures, etc.); however, I gave it a chance, but before I traded, I knew the tranny was getting ready to explode. I also had a problem maintaining the oil level in the car. I would not recommend this car to anyone who needs a completely reliable vehicle or who doesn't like to take a shower on his/her way to work or school.

The car looks great and is fun to drive on the highway but my top leaks so bad whenever it rains somewhat hard. I've had it is to be fixed 3 times and it still leaks and my driver side window keep coming loose leaving a gap between the large window and smaller back window. Plus it being so low leaves it victim to steep driveways and any type of pot hole.

So far so good after a month. however, i bought it used and it has experienced a slight leak with the top up. purchased a 4 yr. warranty with it, to cover annoyances like this. definitely attracts peoples eye(black w/ black top), especially the ladies down the shore. recommend it for fun driving, tight turns, sound system, convenient top device, and exterior appearance. cons - the GS model overall performance is average at best but pretty much expected that from about 142HP&tight fit in the backseat. we'll see how it handles in the winter but for now i love it.

When I first got this car I was absolutely in love with it! The colors are sharp and the style looks sleek. It was great to drive until about a month ago. The clutch went out at 46K. I have just traded it in on a 03 eclipse GTS and it broke my heart to let this one go. If your thinking of bying a 99 eclipse just make sure you that any modifications were done properly. It is comfertable for me, I'm 5'2" and even my 6'1" boyfriend finds it to be okay. It has all the features I need without having too much and it is a simple, fun car to drive. I would recommend the 5 speed manual transmission, it has more pickup. It is a fast, fun, beautiful car and overall I think it is worth every penny.

This car has been a complete nightmare from the very beginning. It burns about 1-2 quarts of oil between every 3000 mile oil change. The dealership claims this is NORMAL! How many other people do you know who add oil like that? Service has been extremely slow and unproductive and full of excuses. Overall the car is built cheap. I've also had problem with the antenna sticking. The oil problems have resulted in engine issues, ect. I would NEVER buy this car or another Mitisbushi again. I have a friend with the same vehicle and he constantly has problem too.

Fun to drive with the top down, but like the others, major roof leaks on the drivers side! All parts have been replaced, weatherstripping, etc, but nothing's worked. Seems the top doesn't fit snug (may have warped?) when shut & water seeps in & pools in the molding piece & pours out of the drivers side top latch & where the molding meets the drivers side window. The last time it rained I had a major flood & am still drying out the car! The dealership is having it repaired by a convertible top roof leak specialist on 3/31/03, well, we'll see (I'm not holding my breath!)

Bought the car off a lease last October and it was almost showroom condition. It's red with a tan top, tan leather and an Alpine stereo system. Thankfully I have not had any problems with my top leaking. I live in Florida and deal with some nasty thunderstorms almost every afternoon. The performance from the 2.4L is average at best. The top feature is very nice and the car looks great with it up or down. I get about 25 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The back seat is useless.
