1997 Marquis LS

I spent 6 months researching every make of used car, looking for the one car that had the best combination of room, power, style, safety, and economy. The car that fit the bill...my 1997 Grand Marquis LS. I have owned the car since 2002 and it has required only regular maintenance (oil changes, plugs, filters and the like). Because most buyers mistakenly view the Marquis as an old person's boat, super quality low mileage versions are readily available for reasonable prices. Ford got this car right and with the same basic engine and body parts being made since 1992...parts are not a problem. My Marquis is extremely fast, incredibly roomy, economical (18-26mpg), and very reliable.

I bought this car new and after 7 yrs passed it on to our son. It has the HPP which makes it fun to drive. Gas mileage is respectable considering the weight of the vehicle. Front seats sagged within a year and the dealer had them rebuilt to my satisfaction( I like a firm seat). Its a real sleeper and fools many with its power. Well here it is 12 yrs later and it still turns heads. Gripes are intake manifold failure ( very common) the happened out of warrenty , ball joints and tie rods, steering arm. You can thank greaseless joints for that. Intake was a known problem and only cop cars got a free warrenty on it shame on ford for this. I'd buy another but I like my f150 to much.

I am a women so the dealership was trying to sell me a Pontiac, they had to wash it so they gave me a Marquis to drive for a day. The looks didnt turn me on, but when I got in the car and started driving it I was sold. I never let them take it back. I have had the care for 2 years and I have driven back and forth from state to state and just keeping regular oil changes the car works great. I cant' wait to get another one. A newer one of course

I have had the car approx 3.5 years. The first thing to go was the intake. Nice big crack on the frontside. Why?!...because it is made from plastic. The replacement has a piece of aluminum to correct this common failure. This was a $700+ repair. Now the control arm bushings and tie rod ends need replaced...why to manufacturer's use greaseless bushings???? Other than these expensive problems, the car has been pretty good to us. Plenty over room and excellent gas mileage for the size.

Had a bit more trouble with this one than the 89. Idle air control and intake manifold were problems I would not expect to have. Other than that only normal items such as alternator.

Great looking car. Listed as a big car but interior seems anything but. Front seat all the way back still leaves one feeling too close to steering wheel. Practically no leg room for rear pass- ingers. Huge trunk but a real back breaker to load and unload.

This car has been on an excellent car. I have used for many different things, including moving, and many, many long trips.....it averages out at about 20 mpg in the city. My four cylinder accord only gets a couple more mpg than that. I love it, but had to sell it to a family member a couple months ago, it has been a great car for her as well. I will definitly have another Grand Marquis. This was my fourth. All of them have been wonderful. Great fit and finish. The car still looks good even though its nearly ten years old. It has held up very well with a timeless design

The car has had numerous problems. I could not have kept it without a warranty. Example, all four window regulators have failed at 300 dollars each to repair. Add the expected cracked intake manifold plus much else.

High mileage Grand Marquis

I have owned full frame RWD vehicles all of my life. That said, the medium sized Mercury GM is a delight to drive on a day to day basis. (I have owned larger and smaller full framed cars). I have been know to drive 800 miles in a day and not need bed rest for a week. Fuel economy has been 14mpg city and 24- 25 highway. Modifications include, duel exhaust with flow masters, K&N air intake system, computer recalibration, police shocks, Bigger sway bars, after market suspension bushings and Police pursuit tires. Over all reliability has been very good. Other than normal maintenance, the coolant runner in the front of the intake manifold has been the only issue. Just normal things

Dead at 175,000- not feasible to fix

I bought this new and never had any problems other than a cracked intake manifold which Ford paid for as part of a class actin settlement. Was hoping to get 250k plus - changed oil, trans and other fluids etc. Developed a brake leak and the brake lines are corroded from front to back - $1800 in labor alone to replace. I had noticed alot of the piping under the hood seemed to rot - electrolysis? If you're looking at one of these watch this - great car otherwise.

This car is all around great. Surprising fuel economy, good handling for size, extreme comfort, good audio system, and nice pick up. I made it look like a copncar with rims and the pushbar and people stare. We have named him Marquis and I have loved him from the day I stole him from a dealer for next to nothing. No break downs or any problems what so ever. And man does he slam with my little additions. I have friends falling asleep in the back seat all of the time with the sort seats and smooth ride. Just broke 100000 and I'm driving him to the junk yard hopefully around 300000.

I have owned every Lincoln model since 1973 Mark V. I put 160k on all of them minimum. But this amazing beast just wont die..lol 240k and other than brakes & tires because I drive it like a race car. ( no tickets or accidents in 50 years,God loves me I think ..lol ) But this car has the ride of a town car, just 6 inches shorter & less wide. Same 302 engine, but without costly air bags.Buy one if u can. 1997 Mercury Gran Marquis defies reality for durability. Plus I miss American cars luxury with the creature comforts of yesterday. When I see someone in a smart Car or selling out our country buying imports from people who hate us I just have to put on my Foreigner cassette and go back in time. God Bless Go Trump who gave us $2,00 gas...whew hoo!

I bought a Marquis for my son 5 years ago for $2700 and was in perfect shape with clean title. It had 72000 miles on it. Since then he put 142000 miles on car. Had some repairs over the 5 years that I believe are common on Marquis. Replaced intake manifold(Rock auto) Has to replace front ball joints and tie rod. Had to replace window actuator on driver side door. Replaced battery and just recently replaced rear bearing. Fortunately I was able to do these repairs myself otherwise they would cost a lot of money in my area. Bought parts through Rock Auto, Autozone & Advanced Auto.

I just experienced my 8th power window failure. This is my wife's car, no kids to abuse the system. Ford has been building cars with power windows for over 50 years and still can't get it right. Other failures include the dreaded plastic intake manifold. The improved Ford replacement manifold is now leaking around the heater hose nipple. Ford has been building cars for 100 years and has difficulty building a manifold that holds water. My wife has been stranded twice with no start issues due to poor crank trigger connector placement, it takes on water when driving in the rain. The rear seat belts were replaced under warranty and still have ratchet issues. The clear coat & paint have failed.

This has been an excellent car. With the exception of a very slight noise problem on passenger side, this car has never cost a dime for repairs other than normal maintenance. A/C is as good today as first day bought. Always kept up with as far as maintenance and it shows in an excellent, comfortable vehicle.

Out of all the cars I've owned my 97 Grand Marquis is the best. I've had a Lincoln Town Car, a Camaro, an Escort, and a F250. Its a reliable, fun to drive car that holds 6 people. It handles well and I always feel safe driving it. I recomend the Grand Marquis to anyone looking for a rear wheel drive 4dr sedan. I love the 4.6L V8. It is suffeciently powerful and the 4spd trans works well too.

I purchased my 97 from an older man who could no longer drive, it was 6 yrs old with 22,000 mi.when purchased.I have used it as my daily work car for the past 7 yrs. It currently has 196,000 mi and going strong,Ive put new plugs and wires on it and brakes along with oil changes, I'm going to keep it as a work car as long as it will run. Bottom line is I'm sold on these cars and planning on buying a low mi. 2008 soon as a second car.

Roominess for peole and luggage is the greatest feature. The seats are not as comfortable as in the '93 Grand Marquis. The engine runs well at 110,000, but several suspension parts needed replacement. Usually I do not need that type of repair. My Camry (with independent suspension) seems smoother on the highway and requires less maintenance.

Some how the designers forgot that people get into and out of the car. If you have older people then this car is not for you. Although is is a large car it is very hard to get into and out of if you are elderly. The car, however is excellent in every other way.

I purchased this 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis when I was tight on money, I have never purchased a used car in my life. Being a little nervous I did some research online and it seemed like every web site I went to had great things to say about the crown victoria and the grand marquis. After looking at both, I liked the look of the grand marquis better. I have had this car for about 2 years now and I can say that this is the best performing, most comfortable, pleasing to drive car that I have ever owned.

Only thing I didn't like about the car were the General Tires they put on it. I have been to numerous trips and get around 26.5 MPG highway miles. I noticed that I get about 3 extra miles per gallon using high

I bought this car as a "winter beater" but it is immaculate and a fantastic riding car. It performed admirably this past winter in NW PA. I just took a 220 mile trip and got 26.7 mpg - AWESOME for a car this size with a V8. I've always loved the Grand Marquis - my parents had a 1984 LS and we retired it with 221,000 miles on it. I'm hoping for a repeat performance with mine!

Car is comfortable in very good condition. I drove around town did my errands and it never let me down. I had no problems with it. Now I just want a new car. It is a dark blue with a blue interior the upholstery is in good condition, the radio works good and so does the airconditioning. It is easy to look out in all directions. The tires are in good shape and it heats up quickly in the winter. It is comfortable for passengers. I have liked owning this car it has been good to me. The pick up is good and it stops easily. I think it would make a good family car. There is a small oil leak and that is the only negative I believe. I hope who ever gets it, has as good luck with it as I did.

I purchased the car with 77,000 miles and now have over 180,000 miles on the vehicle. It has been extremely reliable on the most important item; the engine. Just regular maintenance. Have had problems with temperature controls air/heat switching, check engine light always on, and recently the suspension but those problems occurred well past the 120k mile arena. Great car for my teenage son to learn on.
