Road trip review
Van is borrowed from my mother, who put just under 3,000 miles on it in about 6 months. Taking a trip with the family for 3 weeks, starting in Jacksonville, FL, going through DC, Hershey, Columbus and Dayton, Ohio, Dearborn, Michigan and back through NC before returning home; about , 2,000 miles roundtrip. First leg from Jax to DC, about 750 miles non-stop. After 4 hours needed to get a seat cushion for extra support. Being based on a cargo van none of the seats are very comfortable, even with the optional "drivers comfort" package; rear seats are atrocious (zero adjustability; about as utilitarian as church pews). However, both kids got their own seats for a change, so little complaining. Otherwise, dated infotainment worked for my needs, and navigation got us where we needed. Powertrain is excellent; much more useable power then expected. Engine and transmission work especially well together to get and keep van moving. Seem-less shifting if left alone; however, use the paddles to downshift and the trans gets confused for a second, not sure if it needs to be in higher or lower gear. Once sorted acceleration is great; cruise control is very responsive. We hit the usual DC area rush hour traffic and the van made it much easier to navigate, much less stress. MPG is impressive, getting about 25 overall on 87 octane, and have been running it the entire trip without issue. Anyone considering one of these keep the commercial roots in mind; any of the minivans or 3 row crossovers would be much better suited for comfort; however, for an overall package, you can't beat the overall utility. Finally, I got stuck in a dead end street, about 2 lanes wide. Not wanting to back up into a busy street I turned that van completely around without backing up; the turn circle is so tight you need to be mindful of curves. Backup camera could be better (limited field of vision, not very wide or deep behind) but the lines are helpful, and kept us from damage. For a commercial van it's quiet and comfortable; very smooth ride even on rough Maryland roads. I also like the ability to sweep out the floor and wipe off the optional MBtex vinyl seats.

Functional not plush
This is a functional, versatile van. We love the clean, minimalistic styling inside and outside. Rear wheel drive makes for lighter steering feel. Great towing and load capacity. Very peppy and fuel efficient powertrain. Non-fatigueing, comfortable to drive, seating sits up higher. I have had large vans, and minivans. This a good size. Overall, not a family hauler. A great multi-use vehicle for camping, day trips, home center purchases and daily driver. We recently got rid of our diesel cars. This runs on regular fuel.

Sincere Regret
No family could have been more excited the day we bought our Metris from Mercedes-Benz of Fort Mitchell. We have five children who are growing up fast and have dreams of having a European style van that’s more efficiently engineered (narrower, bench seating, rubber floor, less bulky than other vans). It fit perfectly into our narrow garage. We certainly didn’t expect a fancy Mercedes either. The idea of a utility van outfitted for passengers was perfect. We fully realized this was the first year Mercedes started selling the Metris in the United States, but it had been in circulation as an adaptation of the Sprinter in Europe. For months, we didn’t see another Metris on the road. Every week, people would ask us what it was and if we liked it. We gave glowing reviews too many families and encouraged people to go check it out. Unfortunately, we now feel obligated to warn people about the problems we’ve had with the Metris. Our experience has gone from elation to sincere regret. For three years we have had nothing but problems with the Metris. It has spent more days in the maintenance depart at Mercedes-Benz of Fort Mitchell than we can remember. Recurring issues with the doors, the reverse camera, the engine, and more. The three-year warranty just ended a few months ago, and it’s ironic that Mercedes never offered us an extension plan. We believe they know the Mercedes engineering quality of this vehicle is poor and are trying to minimize the cost of these models. Maybe that’s reading into the situation, but the warranty is over and we are on our own. So we are stuck. Again, the Metris is in the shop for days and days, and we are looking at a $2,500 engine repair that isn’t under warranty. Should we even trust the check engine electronics are accurately diagnosing the vehicle? Should we believe that repairs will solve our problems? Owning a Metris has been costly and disappointing. We hope this review is helpful to others.

A spectacular example of function over form
I meandered into the purchsae of the Mercedes Metris when I needed to shed my 2006 Meredes R500--Mercedes' since discontinued not-a-minivan, three-row family hauler, which was the closest thing to a minivan in the M-B lineup until now. For most, the Metris would not be a suitable replacement for the luxuriously appointed R-Class with two to four more cylinders than the Metris. However, in recent years, my needs were for a more utilitarian, practical hauler for people and things (including large things), and I was tired of frequent four-figure repair bills on something as complex as the R-Class. While relatively spartan inside, the vehicle is attractive and functional, with well thought out removable cup holders, lights, power ports, and heating and a/c vents. What you won't get are entertainment screens, premium audio, adjustable rear seats, or even folding rear seats. But all rows hold actual adults with easy ingress and egress (including with the optional 8th seat, which mine has). While the seats don't do tricks, they do come out (but you may find your will to live waning in the process due to their heft), which makes for a cavernous volume when needed--much more so than with minivan fold-flat seats, which still consume space in the vehicle. Acceleration isn't breathtaking, of course, but it is truly excellent in the context of a 2.0L four-banger pulling such a large and capable vehicle. Much like a diesel, it is extremely responsive under light throttle, but flooring the accelerator doesn't produce THAT much more oomph. I towed a 1,500 pound trailer last week, and I was shocked how little I noticed it. Steering is spectacular, likely owing to the rear drive architecture. Its on-centeredness is better than that of my Audi A6. And the overall handling feel is remarkably planted and free of leaning for a vehicle that is so tall and boxy. Mine has the optional additional battery and high output alternator. I have a 3,000 watt power inverter professionally installed and connected to that auxiliary battery, so I can power PA audio gear or other items from the vehicle in locations where power is not available. Besides the clumsiness of removing the seats, my only other gripe is with the infotainment system. I wish M-B offered an upgrade option. The combination of screen size and interface are pretty terrible, and it is such a good looking vehicle that I think M-B could snag more families with a better offering here. Audio system is fine by utility vehicle standards, but certainly lacks the low end of any German carmakers' premium audio system offerings in luxury vehicles. For me, though, it will be used occasionally for family hauling and will mostly be deployed for my small business.

Nice little Benz two seater
Perfect size, good quality and a nice ride make this van a good purchase. With Mfg incentive a good price made this worth the extra money. Needed a 8 ft bed so this beat the competition hands down. I would like a few more of the options, but the dealers did not stock vans with the extra safety options. The van really needs to have larger mirrors to view the blind spots, adding a stick-on is not a good option for an already small mirror. Ride is nice, handling is great and noise is minimal, just wish it was fwd or awd for northern climates.

9 Metris vans and nothing but problems
We have dedicated a purchase order for 9 Metris vans so far, nothing but problems with them. All vans at 15k or less in miles. Transmission shifter failure, electronic issues, climate control venting and display issue, multi check engine lights, tires and alignment issues, incorrect maintenance alerts on display. Don't be fooled for the 15k mile service interval either, its not exactly true. We are also in a major metroplex and each MB dealer is terrible to deal with that we have tried so far. Only one good dealership so far out of state but under the warranty and part limitations. Would love to just park all of them at the dealer and walk away rather then continue to cringe for what is next to happen.

First Mercedes
We love our Metris. I bought it because of three main reasons. 1. At 77" tall, it easily fits through our 83" garage opening without having to let air out of the tires. 2. It had options for many safety features (we took all of them) not always found in larger vans (of the model year) such as the lane keeping assist, blind spot warning, brake assist, rear camera, nod-off alarm and such. 3. It is a mid-size van. The width and height interior dimensions are noticeably greater than mini-vans with roomy space for 7 or 8 people but there is not room for "up to 15 passengers." Removing the second and third seats leaves a very cavernous space for hauling. However the seats are really heavy - enlist strong friends for this job. As other reviewers noted, the handling is excellent, the turning radius is surprisingly short, the seats are comfortable and the mileage is competitive for a van. The 208hp/258lb.ft premium-gas engine mated to a 7 speed transmission is torquey for around town but not so much at full throttle at highway speeds. It could really use a horsepower increase. Considering the 2L turbo gas engine is becoming the engine of choice for many car manufacturers these days, a stronger, more competitive boost would be appreciated. Unusual things we noticed is that it takes about five minutes for the A/C to begin cooling on hot days unless you just used it. The engine temperature gauge is degreed in Celsius, not Fahrenheit - different but no problem. Service is very expensive. For example a routine servicing (not repair) of the transmission costs $600.00+ at the dealer. Many people comment positively about our Metris. Prospective buyers should note that this vehicle is not as luxurious as a conversion van. It is a "passengerized" version of the smaller commercial van used to haul people to the airport and such. We have taken two 1,000+ mile trips in comfort, with no problems. The price of a similarly equipped Metris for 2019 is noticeably higher than my 2016 with few, or any, real changes or improvements. The Metris could use a real limited-slip rear differential for dual-wheel traction. No doubt MB would answer this statement by stating that its electronically controlled individual rear-wheel braking accomplishes the desired outcome with no fish-tailing. It would be half right.

2017 Metris with 60,000miles now
not bad for a small cargo van...60,000 miles now ...issues that bother me : when you start ending it takes about 30 seconds for a/c to start blowing out of vents! this is brutal in South Florida ! turn the van off and go back in 5 minutes later and ALL the a/c settings are on....floor , face, and windshield......I did not push all the buttons! local mercedes benz dealership wants $300 for an oil change. I get it done for under $100 at a local 10 minute drive thru with full synthetic .....faster and less coins..... had engine warning lights flash on many times... a day later they eventually go off.....this happened a few times already.......radio has issues ......dies a few times and now only has passenger speaker work on the radio , but phone on bluetooth works both speakers.....alignment issues......the van does have enough power and has a smooth ride.....I use the van every day for work and I get about 24 mph......had ford vans most of my life but decided to get the mercedes this once to give it a try......probably go back to ford next time.......

So far ,so good! Well some front alignment problem
Just had the van 1 1/2 weeks ( after waiting 8 months for my order to arrive) and quite happy after 300 miles. Comfort Is very good for a van- after all it's a Mercedes car with a metal box on It, instead of a car body. Decent handling and I got 28+ mpg at 60 miles an hour average on a country highway even though the motor should loosen up and Do even better. It doesn't feel like it is not broken in yet compared to several other new cars I have owned , but I'll take it easy on the gas pedal for at least another 500 miles. Very solid vehicle and nice to travel in. We noticed that a regular 80 mile trip seemed noticeably shorter with this Metris than our regular compact car. Still no issues w 9000 miles. 24 mpg on a trip over the Sierras and Rockies. Up to 27 on local highways. Very stable in high winds and quiet and comfortable. I’ve worn out two $250 front tires in 23,000 miles. Second time after a huge pothole was hit. Seems like a common problem since factory does sloppy job and dealer prep doesn’t catch it. Most Irritating is that Mercedes won’t even respond to my email requesting a reimbursement for the first tire and alignment responses!

Mercedes wont stand by they're vehicle
We have 47k miles on our Metris cargo van. We carrie 400 lbs in it and use it about 3 days a week in our business. We are on our 3rd set of tires and it has been lined up 3 times. The strut bushing went out at 25k and is bad again now that its out of warranty. Now the A/C is working intermittently, the wipers are hitting one another. many things where repaired during the warranty period not listed here. There is 11 pages of discussion about the tires in the metris forum with no help from Mercedes. dealership says its a characteristic of the vans. Thanks for the help with your peice. By the time we got rid of it the transmission was slamming into 1st gear and the screen went black.

Just Okay - Oddities Abound!
I own the utility van "worker" edition (bare bones folks!). What to like: VERY comfy driver seat and ride for a utility type van. Integrated bluetooth makes smart phone integration easy. Nice intermediate sized van for tool storage -perfect size -wise for my construction work Turbo makes accelerating at on ramps EZ for small engine rig Good fuel economy What not to like: >>terrible stock tires (Hankook) - DREADFULLY undermatched for vehicle >>poor suspension - van unstable high speeds >>absolutely needs larger diameter wheels to make it a useful utility vehicle >>gear shift is where windshield wipers should be - classic Mercedes being "different" >>windshield wiper is on same lever as turn signal- constantly accidentally actuating wipers when signaling for a turn (come on guys, fix this crap!) >>transmission pretty herky-jerky until fully warmed up >>light on/off switch constantly bumped by knee upon exit, changes light setting >>only operational USB plug awkward spot under console >>difficult to add interior panels in rear compartment unless purchasing MB brand - $$ >>Expensive oil changes $300-400 >>Wheel alignment only done at specialty providers ($$$) >>$300 for trailer wiring harness if not done as factory install (!!) I will never buy a MB of any sort again. They do things differently just to be... different. Why put the gear shift where every other maker puts the windshield wipers?? Leaves you fumbling at the controls. The gear labeling is mysterious as well. The light switch thing is just annoying - poor R&D. My hope is that this vehicle needs few repairs down the road. Perhaps most importantly, the suspension/wheels situation makes this a very poor choice for anything but the lightest duty of worker type vehicle. If these were beefed up, MB could really be on to something here. Will look at other options for next van. Really wanted to like this vehicle, but it is a daily struggle.

Love my Metris!
It was a little scary at first due to size of vehicle. After 1,000 miles, i was very comfortable driving it. Absolutely LOVE this van. Today was extremely windy, crosswind assist is amazing. Van just drove through crosswinds like no other vehicle i have owned. Also love the safety features, two drivers tried to "brake check" me for no reason (probably staged for insurance), van stopped on it's own. I'm new to the safety sensors as my previous vehicles were older. This will probally be my last vehicle i purchase, want it to last a LONG time :) if i do purchase another vehicle due to boredome after 10+ years, will buy a HUGE Metris version just because it's awesome.

Why didn’t I buy a Metris SOONER?
I am a very busy Contractor. My Metris cargo van weighs 5580 lbs. with all my tools, ladders and steel tool cabinets. The GVWR is 6614 Lbs. this allows me to load a lot of material and never have to worry about overloading it’s capacity. The engine is outstanding and has plenty of power to spare. The van also has an amazing turning radius. I bought the van pretty close to base model. The only options I chose were cargo interior panels, wood flooring, trailer hitch and a driver convenience package. Price was $30,000. I added an aftermarket roof rack and after a small modification, the van fits in my 7’ garage with two full size extension ladders. I previously owned a Ram Promaster City, and with the fore mentioned weight I felt that I was torturing it. I traded it in with 30k miles before I ruined it. The Metris does require 91 octane fuel, but the way it performs, I will treat it to anything it asks. I LOVE THIS METRIS!!

Not what is expected.
My boss bought 2 Metris vans. A 2018 and a 2019. The 2019 has 20k, so far, the roof vibrates real bad, added ladder racks, which dealer said would stop the noise. It didn't. Tires are bald. At under 15k it's check oil light came on. Was 2 quarts low, which the dealer said was normal. At under 15k, the van started to cut out, and check engine light came on. Miss fire cylinder 1. Dealer replaced plug coil. Ok for 4 k. Now check engine light on again. Miss fire on cylinder 1. As for the 2018, eating tires, and alignment issues.steering problems. Until yesterday. The van caught fire and is total loss.

Great storage, tons of problems
We have five kids and travel a lot. We bought a 2016 metris in North Carolina and had it upfitted by Explorer Van in Indiana. We added a higher roof, carpeted floors, leather seats, and a TV and speakers. We love the upfitting so, so much. We hate how much money we have had to put into this car in only 3 years. So. Many. Problems. We are on our third set of tires and were told there have been alignment issues. How were we supposed to know that? We had our A/C fail. Just miles after our warranty expired. Pricey fix. We had a leaky fuel valve that filled our car with the smell of gas. That was fixed with no cost and has since been part of a recall. Our newest issue involved a small engine issue that I didn’t understand that cost over $1200 to fix. My last conversation with my service rep went like this —- “Ma’am, don’t you know you shouldn’t buy the first year of a German vehicle? Do you want to look into a newer one?” Smh. I was just told that I needed a transmission service before the end of the summer - $500 - and that this car was prone to transmission problems. Ugh. Trying to decide if I should sell it and look for something else. I love the convenience of the sliding doors, tons of trunk space (but manual lift gate - super heavy, btw), and lots of leg room in both back rows. However, I keep spending so much money on problems, I am not sure if it’s worth keeping.

Huge & Efficient
I like this van a lot, in a lot of ways. It is huge, and pretty fuel efficient for such a large vehicle. It handles very well, although it doesn't seem to brake as well as I would like. It is very robust, with good safety features. It is pretty comfortable, except I bang my knees getting in, like every other van, and the steering column doesn't telescope as far as I need. Now for the negatives: The radio and navigation are very difficult to use, like every other Mercedes. You would think they would figure this out eventually. The cloth seats hold dog hair like nothing I've ever seen. They should make lint rollers out of the seat material. The view from the backup camera is very poor, especially at night. The radio controls are very hard to reach, and difficult to use. The seats are very rugged, but also heavy, and the rear seat does not fold into the floor. With a few changes, I suspect this van could easily sell out the smaller Toyota Sienna and Honda Oddessey. Overall, this is a great van for the money!

Pluses and minuses
I like the Metris for it's size and give full seats for 8 people. It's attractive on the outside. Inside it is rather dated and more of a shuttle than a kid hauler. They put nicer dash boards in the Euro version. I got stuck on a hill in the snow thanks to the rear wheel drive. AWD should be an option. The rear seats don't fold and are really heavy to move. I'm leaning towards an Odyssey with better mileage and similar space but I hate the lightning bolt design.

ordered optional seats and they are very comfortable, fuel economy at 75 was 25.5 mpg,...cruises at 75 easily...7 speed trans. is a pleasure to drive.,u will not believe the power of the 4cy, perfect except four :needs to be 6" higher, would still fit in a garage and would help walking around...road noise in cargo van...will insulate....,needs to burn regular fuel instead of recomened 91 oct......50 to .70cents more per gal equals $9 to $12 more per fillup..,better milage, some 6cyl vans get 28 mpg

VERY IMPRESSED SO FAR
Unable to know how maintenance will go do to it being a new vehicle. This is how buying a car should be, unlike my last experience at Hyundai. I can actually sleep at night not feeling like I was taken, and oh yea I love the van. I had to ride 6hrs in a down pour to get home after buying the van. I have never been in a vehicle that hugged the road as well as the Metris did. Oh yea did I mention I love this van.

It keeps on going
I bought this van new in May of 2017. I was a medical courier and hauled large heavy loads often times. I did a split of 60/40 highway/city driving. I followed all maintenance recommendations and after having been retired for nearly 2 years this vehicle has 253,000 miles on the odometer. The oil was changed every 15,000 miles (and once a year since retiring). The only repairs done were a fuel vapor canister and a new seal on the oil pan. Everything else has been regular maintenance. The brakes need replacing at 80 to 90 thousand miles intervals. I have often times hauled up to and a bit over 2,500 lbs. Since new, my fuel mileage has averaged between 25 -26 MPG (the fuel mileage on the van always shows I get a bit more, but the app I use does the actual math for accurate readings). I have been very pleased with this vehicle. It has a very tight turning radius and is easy to maneuver in tight spots. I love driving this van and am always very comfortable. Feels like home! It is now 2023 and I'm up to 263,000 miles. Took a trip from Oregon to Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming last summer. Averaged 28.5 mpg for the 2273 mile trip. I am taking it to the dealer next week as it appears that a new thermostat is needed. When it is cold early in the day, it heats up just fine, but as soon as I start going downhill the temp needle drops. At this mileage I accept a replacement may be warranted. This is still the most trouble free vehicle I have ever owned and I hope it keeps rolling for a few more years. I do not drive like I'm racing, I go close to the speed limit and drive carefully - (much different than when I was 40+ years ago!)

Gettin' the Job Done!
I've owned my Metris for about a year and have loved it. I own a wine touring company and this has served as a "go to" vehicle for couples and small groups alike. It is utilitarian compared to other Mercedes Benzes, but not lacking in any important features. I love the way it drives, though it does have a rattle in a seat I've gotta sort out. I LOVE how much space there is in the 3rd row! It destroys any other minivan or SUV in that category. Loving my Metris and buying a 2nd for the business!

Turned out very good for us
I got an Explorer Conversion van on a 2017 chassis and so far we have done three round-trip cross country drives from NY, visiting most of the Lower 48 National Parks and dozens of national monuments, state parks, museums and similar attractions. This includes summer driving through the major US deserts and occasional strong lateral winds (once I got a message "Cross wind measures enabled" or something like that, on I-90 near Billings Mt. Engine has performed without a problem; A/C worked fine in 110+ temps (Death Valley, Tucson). Transmission has also worked fine but once I got Check Engine Light, driving uphill during rain and changing "C" to "E" mode - I pulled over, restarted the engine and the CEL turned off. During the first year or so I had a dashboard rattle but fortunately it went away about two years ago - now it is really low-noise. This past summer, a small round hole in the windshield center developed into a visible crack on the passenger side. We were in Wall SD and but somehow Geico and Safelite managed to replace it in Helena Mt, in just a couple of hours - a miracle for me.

Impressed by scared.
I purchased my 2019 Metris with 4,700 miles without doing much research. It reminded me of the Chevy Astro vans I previous owned and had been unable to purchase again, so I negotiated a deal and drove it off the lot within hours of first seeing it. As of now I'm up to 26,000 without any problems. I have had to deal with 3 recall notices but nothing has been a major problem and hasn't cost me a cent. However, the expected maintenance costs and many of the horror stories I've read online have led me to look into purchasing something other than a Mercedes. I'll miss the vehicle because it's my hotel when I take weekend trips, but I won't miss having to invest in high priced 91-92 octane gas and the costly maintenance issues I suspect will begin appearing in short order. Damn GM! Why can't you reintroduce the amazingly dependable Astrovan?

Exceeding tire wear
Passenger van, never carry any cargo. 42k miles it is already on the 3rd sets of tires. I had continental and Michelin tires. Each With 50k+ miles ratings. No tires last more than 20k on this van. All dealers maintained and rotating wheels regularly. Now it has a recall on the wrong specification of tires installed from manufacturers. the newer model use 235 vs 225 on older model.

The van is beautiful and for a van easy to drive but it’s on recall and the recall is not active but my Metris I don’t consider safe The wheels are too small for the chassis this is specified falsely. Look up the recall FMBSS 110,SH,2.22 “recall consider incomplete remedy not available car can be fatal

The perfect van for me.
The Metris is not as large as a Sprinter van so it is much easier to drive around town. I bought the 8 seat passenget van and removed one seat for easier access to the back seats. The seats are very comfortable and it has just about all of the features of my Mercedes SUV.

Great utility, A little short on comfort
I pretty much echo what Norfla71 had to say. I have a 2016 Metris Passenger van with 140K miles. First off... this vehicle was designed as a service van and Mercedes decided to add passenger capability. The seats are passenger seats are not the best and the infotainment is minimal. Newer ones might be better. The front driver & passenger seats are comfortable. My wife and I have taken it on multiple rode trips, some were 11K miles. Very good handling and road manners. I get about 26 MPG highway. It's an OK people hauler for short trips due to those hard rear seats. As far as a utility vehicle, nothing out there beats a Metris. I looked at all of them and test drove most. This is the only one where the two rear rows of seats come out and you can haul a lot of stuff. At first I didn't like the vinyl floor, but it is nice to be able to wipe it out and not have dirt embedded in a carpet. Take the seats out, throw in an air mattress and you have a nice weekend camper.

I LOVE THIS 2021 METRIS DRIVERGE VAN!
Hey, just got this 5 days ago, I hope you'll get my review one year from now. Used to have a VW Westfalia, I really love the looks of my Metris, powerful, of course, than the old Westfalia, and the minimum equipment installed so I can carry my folding bike inside, my guitalele, our cat, and of course, my wife. My dislike is I did not get all the accessories as advertised on YouTube "Two Guys and a Car." I was given any explanation for those.
