My experience w/ E320

I find that finding someone who won't take advantage of you while fixing these cars is a very rare find. My suggestion is to get a code reader and diagnose problems yourself. Goto an online store like Az autohaus to buy parts or ebay and get parts to put on yourself. Most aren't tough, but will save you alot of money. Known problems are air mass sensors($), the ac fan relay. Ours has been relatively inexpensive to own, but I can see how you could get taken with one of these cars. The dealerships will charge big $ for simple problems. Good luck, these cars still drive better than new cars. Made with quality, but some bad parts spoil the bunch. Great mileage though and smooth power.

1997 E300 Last Best Mercedes built

Probably the most underrated diesel out there. 3liter straight 6 Fastest diesel before that cdi/bluetec bullshit (don't buy into those imo) my 1997 E300 NA diesel is fast off the line even for non turbo and is reliable as hell(one less thing to go) Gets 1050km per full tank with shell v power and additive. Big and safe car with side airbags, Esp and abs. The interior is mint and at 220,000km the seats aren't even broken in to lol. What more could you ask for get one before the go up in price which they will cause all the previous diesel benzs sky rocketed in price. OM606 is the best last engine and no maintenance is required, powerful and proven at this point in age. Just look for a rust free one and you can't lose. Finally a cheap costing easy to use high output Mercedes for diesel enthusiasts. W210 for life.

Just bought the car a week ago and I am very happy. Even with 275k miles on it, it still runs like new. 20 years later it still has more style then most cars going down the road. great gas millage as well, for a 90's car.

One of the Best Cars Ever Owned!

I have owned vehicles from Lexus to Cadillac. My Lexus LS400 I put over 30,000 Mi on it with nothing but problems. The Caddy Proved to be a money pit also. So Far I have now owned 3 Mercedes Benz. I had 2 Class 2002 models (leases) for 3 years and had zero problems. I decided several years ago to pay cash for a 1997 e320 sedan 6 cylinder model. I have put over 120,000 mi on this beast and the only problem was to replace the heater sensor 15 bucks. With normal maintenance changing the oil every 3000 mi, It has been a solid car " A Tank." This has to be the most durable and most dependable car ever owned! Annual Maintenance costs are lower than both Lexus Autos I owned. Highly Recommended!

I bought this car as a sensible break from my usual buying habit of things small, German, and fast. I bought it from a little old lady who's family were taking the keys from her hand. The price of the car was peanuts, but this in no way reflected on the quality of the car. It had been well taken care of. I'm amazed that a car with almost a quarter million miles on it can glide down the road, accelerating with ample power comparable to modern cars, while shifting almost undetectably. This is a magical car. The styling in the modern eye is completely milktoast. Ive found that this is because the lines and cues of this car have been so heavily sampled by other makes, that it blends into the background. You look like everyone when everyone wants to look like you.

Excellent gas mileage for a car this large (an honest 28mpg plus on the road). Good power, quiet, Only had one problem so far; a stuck relay kept the smog pump on after I shut off the engine which burned up the pump. A $1000 repair that wasn't necessary. Bad design here--- Overall i you get a good one, I think its an excellent second choice for a family. Its a better used buy then a C class. I wouldn't use it as a daily driver, though. Also, get a good, honest independent mechanic. These cars will send you to the poorhouse quick if you're not careful.

This is my third MB, and my second diesel, and I have enjoyed every one. Even though the 97 Diesel in a non turbo it has plenty of go. My fuel mileage averages upper 20's around town to low thirties on the highway. I bought the car with 106K on the odo and after two years and at 135K on the odo the only major maintenance required has been changing the glow plugs, which requires pulling the intake manifold. The car is a joy to drive, and I constantly get compliments on its looks. I guess I am just fortunate because I have not experienced the problems with any of my MBs that so many others in this forum seem to have. I hope to always be fortunate enough to own an MB.

Bought new in '96, an excellent package in terms of its exterior size, interior space and cargo volume. Handles well and is a pleasure to drive, especially on the freeway where it just glides along. Highway fuel economy has been as high as 27.75 mpg (Model's EPA was 20/27). IMHO, in good condition the E320 is a screaming used car bargain, but only if its in good condition.

We love this car BUT, it has had serious fuel system problems. The fuel injector pump has been replaced at 50K and 90K miles. We were stranded in the middle of nowhere when it went out at 90K. A long walk with no cell service in the area.Thank God for the 100K extended warranty we bought or we would have been out over $3K each time. Our previous diesel a 1982 240D ran over 300K miles with no problems. We wanted one of the new CDI diesels but now we are not so sure.

My father purchased this car in 1999 at the end of his friends lease for $36,500. The car has been nothing but a joy. It has every single option that the dealer + merc had to offer at the time. In all these years she's been so good to us. Now with the economy i sold off my cars and started driving the merc which was sitting for 2 years. Issues? No. Creaks? Squeeks? Rattles? NONONO. I love this car. yes 91 octane BUT i Average 22mpg in mostly L.A. traffic. Note one thing that all these e-classes seem to need a new steering pump ONLY since it starts to leak. Other than that not ONE crazy repair unlike the other guys rant. Can you say LEMON? or maybe he's hard on his cars what can i say.

E420 Review

I bought this car used, with extra low milage, from an owner in Italy. Although I was never a MB nut, I can see why people love the brand. It is, for a 13 year old car, a step above most cars that are supposedly younger, better etc. and cost the same if not more. While reliability is an issue in the W210's, you can't expect a 13 year old car to be flawless or not experience any mechanical failures from wear and tear. From my research, the W210's are the last of the proper German engineered and assembled MB's (some say the W124's were the last such breed). If you are planning on buying a used W210, especially the E420, take it to an honest MB dealer and get it thoroughly checked. Then enjoy.

I bought this car with 222,000 miles on it from a family friend. In 7 days, the radiator blew, but for 3 years after, now with 244,000 miles, the car drives beautifully. Comfort, handling, horsepower, and after tinting the windows, style. I plan to drive this car until it breaks down completely, overall it is a true gentleman's ride.

Just recently bought a 1997 E320 with 93K original miles, and have (almost) nothing but positive things to say about it. 3.2L L6 has ample power and acceleration. I was particularly surprised with the handling - for a nearly 17 foot long 4000 lb. car, it hugs the corners. Grumbles a bit in lower gear but really purrs on the highway. Cabin is silent with very little wind noise. The ride is very smooth, nearly no engine vibration, although the suspension is tight enough that you get good tactile feedback through the steering. The interior is the best selling point, all wood trim and leather with none of that molded plastic junk luxury car brands try to charge a premium for these days. The automatic climate control is simple and effective. It's a 20 year old car, so obviously the electronics are dated, but a simple aftermarket radio in mine has bluetooth. Your cell phone can cover that gap with navigation and streaming apps. The biggest drawback is the rear wheel drive being very loose in slippery conditions. The transmission has a winter setting that starts you off in 2nd gear, but there's still a lot of torque being applied to the rear wheels typical of an L6. The hood release lever is also awkwardly located, being very easy to accidentally kick when entering the driver's seat (although the manual release lever in the grille prevents unintended hood release). Maintenance costs will be somewhat steep so don't treat it like a beater. Take care of issues when they come up and this car will take care of you. Oil changes are particularly important as this car has a timing chain, not a timing belt. Oil changes will be the difference between getting 200k or 400k out of this car. All in all, if you find one in good condition, buy it! Pleasure to drive and timeless styling.

Probably the best car I've ever owned! We purchased our 97 E300D with confidence because it was steadily serviced and well maintained by a family member. I would snap up one with that kind of a track record. We purchased with 200K miles. The most notable repairs over the past 20 plus years have been replacing the injector seals and the engine mount. From other reviews I've read, most 210s will need that kind of care. Everything else has been typical maintenance and simple repairs. I have not had problems with the electric transmission or window motors but the service man has done simple preventative things to keep them from failing (replacing the tranny fluid and filter even though it is 'sealed' and periodically lubing the window channels and guides). Just maintain it and drive it sensibly, and it will last another 20 years.

First off this car is amazing, it's everything you could ever ask from a 90's luxury sports car. If reminds me of my 98 Infiniti q45t in the aspect that it's just designed so beautifully. The headrests are power for Christ sake. The seat is power in almost ten different ways. The quality of materials is A1 from the carpet to the leather. There's a power rear sun screen, what I like to call "secret storage compartments" in the coolest places. I mean I feel like james bond driving this thing. I bought this car from one of those "I hats this p.o.s." guys you'll read in a second for $100. Yes ladies and gents $100. I'm a mechanic so idk about the dealer prices but I paid $97 for a control arm that snapped in half somehow.. (We're not sure to this day how, probably why the dude was so pissed at it) and fixed a leaky steering rack for damn near nothing and the car runs like brand new. It's got 250,000 miles on it and I bet it would run the same numbers it did when it was new. It's really just a beautifully designed and engineered car. This was my first Mercedes and I gotta say, this thing is fn awesome. I wouldn't sell this thing for $10k right now and I paid a hundred bucks for it. Over all I give it the obvious A+

Bought in July 2018 a e320 with 281000 miles , two owners , well maintained, for $ 1400! Yes $ 1400! Not much money i tought if something go wrong. 8000 miles later and after one year of ownership, i spend ONLY $325 for a tune up , oil change, fuel filter! Amazing car 31 miles mpg on the highway, 24 in the city! Pass emissions with flying color. Fast after 3000 rpm , safe ( look at the crash test on YouTube) interior is like new. Luxury, qualities material, and yes last great built Mercedes ever. Very simple to work on it. The 6 in line is a pleasure , still push it to 125 miles an hour all the time. A must buy if you want a luxury fast car at low cost.

Beware of Starmark

Bought my 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class with a Certified Pre-Owned Starmark warranty. After three weeks it would "miss" or hesitate at 45 - 55 MPH. My dealer said that the fuel return hoses clogged. They would not fix this problem under warranty and said it was not part of the Starmark pre-sale inspection. I had it fixed by my independent mechanic at cost of $800. the entire mainfold was fouled with carbon buildup at only 45,000 miles. My mechanic says that this is a common problem on this non-turbo engine. It's a poor design, in his words. The glow plugs were "frozen" in place by this carbon build up. I have corresponded with my selling dealer and Mercedes-Benz USA, both wished me a happy holidays. This is my sixth and last Benz.

This is a Nice car and fun to drive I have had it for 3 years and abuse it on cornering and accelerating. Engine and suspension have not failed! Of course their are some repairs, water pump fuel pump and minor things that might be expensive.. But this is not a car for the poor. I love this car and I installed a turbo and engine has not failed at 190,000 miles... Its not what the car is worth if you love the car their is no price.

I acquired this car about a year ago with 62K. I knew the previous owner and it's service history. Immediately had overdue maintenance performed by indy mechanic for about $700 (vs. dealer who wanted $1500). Have since put 12K on car with no new problems, and averaging over 25 mpg in mixed driving. The car is not without issues: LR window motor doesn't work, driver's mirror needs replacement. These are common problems with these cars. Essential to have service complete service history before purchasing one of these cars.

I actually love this vehicle, I use it for my DD and haven't had not 1 issue with it, I spent $2,000.00 on it about 5 years ago with 47k miles, I now have 122,344k miles on it, I change the oil every 5k, and I change the air filter every 10k, I change the plugs, wires, etc. every 50k and the brakes when the sensor told me to around the 120k mile mark. I noticed if I purchase the parts and bring it to a certified MB mechanic ( not the brakes tbh I used a local Precision Tune ) still bought the brake pads and sensors it comes out to be way less than the maintenance on my wife's 2016 Audi A4 ( she likes to use the dealership ) oil change plus air filter and service check cost me around $81.00 unless I need a new filter than it's around $93.00. The brakes with sensors, and installed $118.00, I only use premium 93 and if your a Sam's Club member its between $2.04 - $2.69 per gallon. All in all it's the best $2,000.00 I have ever spent on a vehicle I have invested small amounts of money here and there that wasn't warranted like original Alarm Code stickers, and a ceramic coating. But long story short, make sure you keep up with the maintenance and you too will love this great vehicle

People have a hard time believing it is 10 years old. No problems so far, but the fuel efficiency on premiun gas isn't great. Not complaining though

Purchased an off lease from dealer. Had 49.5K miles. Needed align and new tires. Having to learn how to drive RWD in KC winters. I have trouble falling in love with cars after having been a sales rep who got company cars for so long. I LOVE THIS CAR!! The drive, the feel, the quality even after the miles and years are exceeding my expectations. Now if I can only keep the rednecks with pickkups and American made cars from wanting to park too close to me to improve the looks of their vehicles....... and dinging my car......

As can be expected with european vehicles, parts/repairs are expensive. Our '97 E420 was purchased in 2008 from the original owner, with only 23,000 miles to its name (picture trips to and from the grocery store, and that's about it). It is a BLAST to drive, but the number of times and various reasons it has had to return to the shop has me eager to find alternative before something else goes wrong. I refer to some of the more expensive repairs as 'mid-life crisis' items that were bound to happen sometime (e.g. oxygen sensors, various filters), but having to rebuild the transmission at 160,000 miles and repairing the catalytic converter at 175,000-ish miles made me wish I wasn't driving such a *nice* car. However, I must say that it is a tough car. We were involved in a collision on the interstate, when the driver behind us rear-ended us at 70 mph or so (we were going maybe 50-55 mph on the off-ramp). The resulting damage to the rear bumper was much less significant than it could have been. The seats are not the most road-trip friendly; they begin to feel uncomfortable on really long trips (4+ hours). The interior looks nice; it's a really classy ride. I will miss it for many reasons when we do try and sell it and find something else.

This is my first Mercedes and I could not be happier. This car actually makes me want to go and drive somewhere. It has the perfect balance of everything I want in a car - looks, performance, comfort and reliabiliy. I also find it very interesting that it has excellent visibility while driving at night. I assume that whatever the windshield is made of, it does a good job of filtering out the glare of oncoming traffic. Keeping in mind that this is a 4 door sedan, I five the car very high marks for the way it handles corners and country (twists and turns) driving, while the engine has plenty of power (and torgue) for passing, merging or just getting up to speed.

We bought this car which was a demo by the seller at the dealership. We haven't had any major problems exept for the back drivers side window wouldn't roll up one day, but we had to buy a new window motor for it, which it was under warranty at the time. It is a very comfortable ride and the emblem on the front makes the driver feel like royalty. It gets preety good gas milege exept for the fact we put premium gas in it while we put regular in my Tahoe. Overall this has been and excellent car. It would be perfect if the servicing wasn't so expensive!!

A lot of the reviews here seem to be based on whether you get a good one or bad one. But I think your odds of getting a "good one" are generally good. Perhaps the "bad one" people are more vocal. I didn't intend to buy a car to fall in love with when I happened to buy the E420, but wow, have I fallen head over heals. This is an amazing piece of engineering. I would say that the one I bought was in about the worst shape, but I still found the car amazing. I just put on new shocks, engine mounts, cats, and OMG this car is like brand new and better than I could have imagined. Just writing about it makes me want to go out for a drive.

Very nice and still feels updated even at 5 years old. MB put features on this 1997 car that are just now showing up on 2002 Japanese and American vehicles. Ride, power and comfort are a perfect blend between sport and high end luxury. Safety is of upmost importance and all you need is in this car.

Don't get me wrong here, Mercedes-Benz makes some great cars and I believe this is one of the greatest. My mom had it first, then she bought the 2000 S-Class and gave this to me. this car has great pick-up speed, never looks old really, and it's simple and practical luxury. Catches the eye everywhere you go and never ashamed to valet park. I think it's their best sedan.

Long term owner here. zI've had 4 MB Diesels over the years and the straight 6 engine is legendary; robust and thrifty. I do most all my own work and love the engineering that goes into MB products. I use the diesels as my daily commuter and for trips. I get over 32 mpg and its comfortable and quiet.

Bought this car used from the original owner in 2002, with only 16,000 miles on it, and thought "what could go wrong with such low mileage". Plus my intention was to only drive this car to and from work, which averages about 8,000 miles/year. Well, first the electrical wires to the driver's side front headlights kept "coming lose", which cost $400.00 to fix. Then the A/C went out, along with oil leakage and transmission problems, which totaled to $5,000.00. I wish I have stayed with buying Toyota or Subaru, which are far more reliable.

Purchased in March of 2006 w/98,000 miles on it. Now I have 190,000 on it. Only got stranded once out of town. You better have some deep pockets for this bad boy. 1,000 on suspension just for the front driver side and the passenger is going any minute, leaked oil rapidly since day one, put oil in like buying gas! Lights always need replaced at 20-30$ a pop. Need radiator 700, need tie-rods 7 once the body starts to rust goodbye! Got my money worth by using it for work, if not for that would be angry. Plus this model looks so outdated since new models have came out... Got me a 2003 BMW 530i and it runs circles around this car in every category. Go BMW, if you got this car sell it now! Today!

Oil leak, major repair

I bought this car with 50,000 miles, and it looked showroom condition. In the last two years, I have had numerous maintenance costs, up to about 6000 and now it needs about 2 to 3000 to fix oil leak, and the catalytic converters need replaced, 1500 bucks more. Apparently everyone knows about the oil leak problem with these models. This was my first Mercedes, and last.

1997 E420 is Junk

I bought this car new in 1997 and it is one of the worst cars I ever purchased. It gave me lot of grief and frankly I wouldn't have been as disappointed if it had the Chrysler logo instead. It's motor had to be changed twice, All window motors broke down, speed sensor gave up, AC didn't work. Shock absorbers crumbled into pieces, and more - all in first 5 years! Frankly, I and some of my friends gave up buying Merc in favor of BMW. The car has only 93K miles- but it is a hunk of junk and been a LEMON. I have a 10 inch thick file with notes and problems that Mercedes had to fix. Stay away from MERCEDES, if you want peace in your life!

I was in love with this car since I first saw it 6 years ago. The looks are incredible. I bought it last March. I kept getting a check engine light - turned out to be a recall that was never corrected. The wheels have been balanced 6 times, and they're still a little bit off. I bought an after market warranty that I have used several times. All of these little problems aside - it is the best looking car in the world, and it turn heads. I love the feeling of driving a Mercedes

Even 5 years and 70k this car looks fresh and feels new - great power and a well-balanced solid chassis are certainly the high points of the car. I'm still impressed by it's capabilities and the outstanding build quality.

I bought a Mercedes e320 at 130,000 for a grand. Rides like new! All I did was update the fan with a s series modular pack. Took a hr. New looking condition. Only thing missing was a hood ornament. Its fast. Hits 130mph. Great on turns. And it's a straight 6! Love my carrr!

This is the best car that I have ever owned! It is good to buy them 3 years used because of depreciation. The acceleration of the inline 6 is swift and smooth. Of course the reliability is top notch. The timing chain helps prolong the life of the motor. The build quality is unparalleled for a production car. I love the solid sounding "Thunk" when I shut the door. The interior is tastefully decorated and is extremely quiet. Other than that the car is perfect. It is a perfect blend of performance, style, class and luxury.

What's Wrong with the 97' Mercedes 320?

I enjoy my car on the highway but in the city, the gas mileage is terrible. The car is designed so that the heat only comes in from the sides and not from the front which makes it cold in the winter. The center dash contains the windows buttons and trunk buttons and will short out if you have spillage. The leather is not the best either. It is hard. In addition, the car is hard to drive since it is only power assisted. There is only a cassette in the car. The styling is beautiful. It looks very much like some of the newer cars. I purchased it used with 38 thousand miles.

This car was a total hunk of junk from the first day we drove it. The check engine light came on on the drive home on the day of purchase. It was never fixed, but to make the car even worse the radiator had to be replaced before the car could be sold. So, $3200 later we finally just got rid of the car to cut our losses while we still could. Run! Don't walk away from this car!

I purchased this car as a certified pre-owned 12years ago, it was my first Mercedes. Until you have owned one for a period of time, you can not appreciate the brand and what Mercedes about. Over the years, we have made some costly repairs rear seal replacement and transmission replacement, but the car now has 257K on it and when compared to newer cars, I will still take my chances with this car. I have given it to my daughter as a first car, we considered a trade for new more up to date car, only problem we could not find a better safe first time car. Find a knowledgable Mercedes mechanic and enjoy a great car.

Bought this '97 E320 used in early 2002. I now have 180,000 miles on it. Engine remains reliable, but that's about it. My entire instrument panel is not functioning (dealer replaced ignition switch, which did nothing!!). AC died 2 years ago (dealer replaced dash heating unit, which did nothing!!) Car is rusting badly.

This is still perhaps the most eyecatching Mercedes model, along with the new SL. This car is smooth, quiet, reliable, and a real blast to drive on a long curvy country road. When the time comes, I will probably look to replace this car with a 2001 or 2002. The V-8 is definately the way to go.
