Would not buy another one

This car has not been too bad overall but it has had some issues with idling which have never been resolved. It's a problem in the cold climate of Canada. When it gets very cold it cranks really slow then floods. The CD player is junk - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The rocker panels rust almost as fast as a GM or Ford. Maybe because Mazda is now owned by Ford and is no longer a true import. Buy a Toyota and you won't see that kind of rust on it so fast and they start easy at even minus 40 deg F.

Great Car. Has good low end pick up. Very responsive engine. Engine is not as peaky as a 99 Civic and has more gusto than a 99 Corolla. Transmission is easy to use and shifts smoothly. Handling and acceleration are excellent for this type of car. Interior feels airy, comfortable and avoids the cramped "econobox" feeling. Back seat is even roomy for adults. The trunk is spacious. You don't feel like you "settled" for this car.

Better than a Civic

Got this car in '01. Build quality and reliability have been top notch. Acceleration is lacking by most standards. This car however dose make up for that. From baseline to ES you won't find *any* front wheel drive car more manuverable through corners, quicker through a slalom, and all around sure footed. All with the stock chassie, tires, shocks, springs and sway bars. Due to the stiff chassie, bumps are not always subtle; depending on the bump. As Car and Driver says about the Protege. It's an average for passangers. It's great for drivers...

Excellent car; underappreciated name

I've been driving this car almost every day for 4 years, and it has not failed me a bit. It has been reliable, durable and economical. The car certainly is underappreciated, which works for me because I did not have to spend a fortune to buy it. Overall an excellent vehicle. As testament to the Mazda value, I decided to buy a Mazda Tribute as 2nd care for treacherous winter driving.

Mediocre Mazda

My Mazda was a college gift from my parents bought in great condition. I learned stick in this car and it was very smooth. The gas mileage was also great, and being a college commuter who drives 60miles a day to and from school, the gas was quite cheap. Got in one accident with a deer that completely demolished the car costing around three grand to fix (fix enough to pass inspection that is). The a/c has broken, check engine light is very flighty, had many pipe clogs, brakes failed... all within six months of purchase.
