The Kia EV6 wasn't the automaker's first electric vehicle when it debuted in 2022, but it put the world on notice that the South Korean car company could build a world-class EV. A small crossover SUV, the 2024 Kia EV6 has distinctive styling and impressive range and charging capabilities to back it up. Edmunds has found in its independent testing that the EV6 can go more than 300 miles on a single charge and then speedily charge back up to quickly get you back on the road.

Performance

How does the EV6 GT drive? The core of the EV6 GT's appeal is its muscular performance. It delivers a burst of acceleration that remains breathtaking run after run after run. In our testing, the EV6 GT had some trouble putting down its power but still ripped from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. That pips both the Tesla Model Y Performance and the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, which both posted 3.7-second times at the Edmunds test track.

When the road gets curvy, the GT is less capable. For starters, the GT's all-season tires don't offer much grip. It's also not a well-balanced car. Dive into a corner and the EV6 GT will feel nose-heavy. But dig into the accelerator pedal and things swing the other way as the rear end will kick out and oversteer. Fun? Maybe. But driving quickly definitely requires dexterity from both hands and feet. One thing that could definitely use an upgrade is the brakes. They get overwhelmed quickly during enthusiastic driving and need more initial bite to get the GT under control with greater confidence.

Comfort

How comfortable is the EV6 GT? The GT comes with an electronically controlled suspension that is stiffened over the setup found in the other EV6 models. Even so, we found the ride quality to be pretty smooth when not in Sport mode. It's a comfortable cruiser that smooths out road imperfections nicely. The downside to this comfort is that when driving aggressively, there's a bit too much side-to-side body roll in corners. But for daily driving, the GT's suspension is well calibrated.

Another GT-specific feature is the front bucket seats, which only come with manual adjustments compared to the power adjustments found in other EV6 trims. You also lose seat ventilation, though front and rear outboard seat heaters are standard. Some people might find the aggressive seat bolstering to be a bit too tight, but if you fit, you should find them supportive and good at keeping your body from sliding during quick cornering.

Interior

How’s the interior? The interior of the EV6 is slick to operate and simple to use. We're fans particularly of the central touch panel that switches between climate and radio functions. That said, there are a few issues worth pointing out. Rear visibility is surprisingly not great. The thick rear pillars mean blind spots are large, and the rear window aperture is just a little too small. It's not a deal-breaker, but you'll have to be more cautious when changing lanes or reversing.

It's easy to find a driving position you like. There's also plenty of room in the back for rear passengers. But taller backseat riders will have to be mindful of their heads when clambering in and out because of the EV6's sloping roofline.

Technology

How’s the tech? The EV6's infotainment system is snappy, supports USB-connected Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and is easy to use while driving. Unfortunately, the Meridian sound system in our test car distorted music at higher volumes and never delivered full bass. It is a major step down from the Bose system that comes in the EV6's sibling, the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

We are also fans of how the EV6 executes its driver aids, the systems are intuitive and easy to setup. The blind-spot warning system is tied to the standard head-up display, so it's easy to see if cars are in your blind spots without having to move your eyes from the road for too long. And the GT also comes with Highway Driving Assist 2 standard, which keeps the vehicle well centered in its lane and slows down/accelerates smoothly in traffic. It will also change lanes automatically with a bump of the turn signal.

Storage

How’s the storage? The EV6 offers a paltry 24.4 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats, which expands to 50.2 cubic feet with the 60/40-split rear bench folded down. The offerings from Ford, Tesla, Hyundai and VW all allow you to put more in the rear hatch area. The front trunk, like the Ioniq 5's, is comically small and barely large enough to store a laptop bag.

Small-item storage is better. There are helpful door cubbies, and the center console is good for holding larger items including a handbag or even a grocery bag. Parents will find the expansive legroom in the rear passenger area a boon for installing a car seat for kiddos too. All in all, though, the EV6's competitors do a slightly better job of offering up storage solutions if space is at the top of your wish list.

Range and Efficiency

How economical is the EV6 GT? Here's where the EV6 GT really falls short. Though the GT has the same 77.4-kWh battery pack that the other EV6 models get, its EPA-estimated range is just 206 miles on a full charge. That's far below the 252 miles that the still quick AWD GT-Line offers. In our real-world range testing, the GT well outperformed that estimate, covering 238 miles, but that still puts the GT behind performance versions of the Mach-E and Model Y.

On the upside, the EV6 is compatible with the latest high-powered DC fast-charging stations. It's worth noting that these powerful 350-kW chargers are still pretty rare — most DC fast-charging stations you'll come across are capable of providing 50 kW to 125 kW, but it's nice knowing that the EV6 will be compatible with the next generation of more powerful fast chargers.

The battery also features preconditioning so it can charge even faster once plugged in, but the problem is this system is tied to the EV6's navigation interface. It will only turn on if the native navigation is set to take you to a fast charger, but the system is cumbersome and its map of chargers is woefully out of date. There also isn't an easy way to see chargers on your route near where you will run out of range — it only shows stations close to your current location. The ability to set preconditioning on your own would be a helpful feature and that would allow you to use navigation in Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to route to the station.

Is the EV6 GT a good value? The EV6 GT is very well equipped, coming with a standard head-up display, a surround-view camera and suede upholstery. But it does miss out on a few features the other EV6 models get standard, like power-adjustable and ventilated front seats. On the whole, though, it offers great value with its performance and features even if the quality of the interior materials doesn't quite cut it at this price.

Kia's warranty is one of the best in the business. It offers a 10-year/100,000-mile drivetrain warranty on its EVs that includes the battery pack. You also get a five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty.

Wildcard

An EV6 GT qualifies as one of the biggest sleeper vehicles around — there's nothing in its bodywork that screams at you. Other than a subtle GT badge and some different wheels, it's very hard to tell apart from the other EV6 models. That is until you mash the accelerator and it hits warp speed. For all the issues the GT has in the corners, its powertrain just loves to paint over all of them with a single solution: more power. The fact that it pulls way past 60 mph also gives it a big leg up on the Mach-E. It's not the most precise instrument, but it is fun in the right conditions.
