Second time around

We bought our first Miata new in 2002. Can't add anymore than everyone else has about how fun and reliable it was. Had to get another car soon after because it was impractical for our needs at the time. Ten years later, I found this 1999 with 140kmiles for a very good price and practicality be d****d. It still runs like a new one and is just as much fun. I'd like to disagree with everyone that says it's not a good choice for a 6 foot person. I'm 6'1" and have plenty of room with the top down, which is the main reason for owning one. It is a little tight for headroom with the top up, but that shouldn't keep a taller person from checking one out.

My NEW (to me) Miata

I just bought a 1999 Mazda Miata. She's cherry red and with the beige lether interior, Bose sound system, P/W and P/L. I love her!!! I've wanted a Miata since before I could drive and my mom refused when I was 16 years old to get me one, citing it was unsafe. I understand where she was coming from- plus when I went to college, in MAINE, my Miata would've been a silly choice. However, I live and work in Boston and I love this car! No, I wont be able to take her out in the winter that much but she's a second car and well worth it. She was just over $8,000 and had only 28,000 miles on it! I know right!!! She had one owner who kept her in a garage at his cape cod house! WHat a steal- mint!

I highly recommend installing a supercharger on the miata. I purchased a used miata with a supercharger already installed. It feels like I'm driving a rocket powered go-cart. I'm probably pushing close to 200hp in a 2300lbs car. And to top it off, I get 28mpg with my foot in it all the time.

I just picked up this 10th anniversary edition Miata with 100,000 miles on it. The car still runs and idles like new. No vibration at all. The paint is in very good condition. I love 6 speed manual tranny and dual tone interior design. Leather and suede buckets seats. The handling is excellent. RWD. I love this car. A nice Christmas present for myself

This is my second Miata. I got it with only 57,000 miles. Previously I had a bare bones 96 (no A/C, P/W) I loved it. Then I bought a new 05 Mustang GT that had the comfort and the performance (LOVED that one too!). But I had to sell the Mustang unfortunately. So while I was "right sizing" I went back to a Miata. And in San Diego there isn't a more perfect car. If it wasn't for the 300 HP in the Mustang I would have rated the Miata higher in performance. The Miata's handling is perfect. It's buzzy at freeway speeds. I love the way it shifts. Looks better than the new Miatas!

I leased this car in 98 and bought it when the lease is done...I hve 44000 miles on it..it is fun as heck to drive...cramped in cockpit...good on gas...not enough power though...needs about 40 more horsepower ...however you can really throw it into curves and it is very balanced....I was thinking about trading it in...but I think I'd miss it too much...it would cost me more than twice as much to buy anything as much fun...oh, and very reliable although I did have a leaking rear seal fixed in wrranty

I have 10th Anniversary. It has been a reliable vehicle and I am still amazed that people comment on how good the car looks. I am happy with everything, but the power. It lacks power. It does. There is a circulating slogan that it is fun-to-drive. But it would have been infinitely much more fun if it had more power. I have no clue why Mazda is so reluctant to add reasonably powered engine to this wonderful roadster.

Bought a 1999 miata with 64k mileage on it around 8-9 months ago. Bought it from the original adult owner. About the car: Manula transmission -Low mileage when I bought it -haven't done anything aside from 3k oil change -Current mileage on the car for the past 8-9 months is 73k I enjoy driving this little beauty. My gf doesn't like it because its manual and she thinks the car is too small(your opinion matters little..). So far, upgraded air filter to K&N oem filter(1mil mileage warranty), momo shift knob, and just recently added a High Quality trunk lip spoiler, Original did major service @50k, so I guess I will do one at 90k or so. So far, the car drives flawlessly.

Last year I bought the 1999 mx5 10th ann. The car had 68k and was in excellent cond. I drive the car quite hard and find the power band somewhat disappointing, however I do admit red-line shifts are very satisfying, at around 7k rpms,(typical for many import sports cars). Little acceleration in 6th, toping out somewhere around 125mph. Shifting quickly into 6th can be sketchy, since reverse is just a click away. Car has an awesome feel and ride... very stiff and sporty. Sound from stock exhaust is respectable. Seats are leather with blue suede inserts that are difficult to maintain, but look very cool. Winter driving is a death wish, however the hard top keeps you warm and looks amazing.

I had a 99 Miata. The car was beautiful!! I thought I could tell from the details that the car was taken care of, no scratches, no dent, seats good condition, and ran well - I was wrong!! This car within 3 months of ownership I had a lot of problems. I know that there are bad vehicles in every making, I think that I got one of them. For those willing to try this car it will be fun to drive. I do suggest the manual tranmission it just makes it even more fun to drive. Mixed feeling on this ride. I will never purchase another though.

My next car will have to be a 4-seater, so I don't want my Miata to ever wear out! I'm tall at 6'-1", but I like this car and don't feel cramped inside. I don't drive long distances, though. The gearing tends to make for high engine revs when you're on the interstate - by my experience, in excess of 3700 rpm's at 65. Fit and finish is as good as you have come to expect in a Japanese car. Engine compartment is well laid out, making routine service easy. It won't win many stop light drag races, but over all a very high-quality product and a pleasure to drive.

My wife's is red. Real eye turner with chrome wheels. Car could be more powerful as really lacks torque but has amazing corning capabilities especially with the 16 inch Yokohama Parada Spec-2's I put on last year. The 99' needed a functional drink holder. Pops in and out of traffic with ease and stops on a dime. Braking requires that you are acutely aware of what is behind you at all times. If this thing were hit from behind by a SUV - good luck. We have had no problems with the car thus far.

Its obvious-fun car to drive. Needs more ummph off the line. High RPMs while fwy driving (4k@73mph) 6th gear should be OD. Economical (30mpg). Great build quality. Image?-everyone has an opinion when you buy this car ("mid-life crisis?" or gender specific pre-concieved notions as to ownership...could be regional?). Tight handling. Minimal trunk space. Useless cupholders. Roll bar should be option. Short throw shifter is A+. Overall great car. No regrets - Buy this car.

The Miata is the best car I've owned, it is extremely reliable, fun to drive, and everything works, this is more than could be said for my other cars. The only complaint I have is with the seats, they aren't very comfortable on long trips. but in 2001 this is fixed, and wow, what a difference. but great little car. You need one. remember the red ones are faster (automatic 20hp)

I purchased this car for the fun factor and it has delivered! I have owned several sports cars in the past and this one is by far the most fun (and reliable). I bought the car with high miles after talking to my local Mazda dealership and they told me mileage is not a issue and they were right. I've had it for a year now with no problems. I drive it daily and grow to love it more each day. This car doesn't disappoint!

Among others, I have owned and driven a Sprite, Healy 3000, MGCGT (MGB with Healy engine), '79 Supra, ‘88 Supra, (which cornered like it was glued to the ground). None surpassed the fun of the Mazda. Only my Healy was as enjoyable. This car is a true sports car in every sense. I drive it daily, and even at 59 I still enjoy the thrill. Top up or down, the drive is a joy. Top down in the evenings is my favorite here in Austin TX. If you gotta drive, might as well enjoy it.

I have had this car for 7 years and absolutely love it! The car is nimble and incredibly responsive-the car takes curves wonderfully. The top is easy to lower - I have taken the top down while sitting at a long red light. Unlatch and drop it behind you. The gas mileage is good. I get up to 33 mph on highway driving. It is a roadster and sounds/feels like one. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a fun, no frills car that is intended for driving enjoyment. When I bought it, the differences between the Miata and the (then) Z3 didn't justify the $18K difference in price. I am glad I went with the Miata. Fully loaded with all options it was only $24K,

This is the most amazing car I've ever owned. It is fun to drive, looks great, and is just the right size. I'll be the first to admit that they could have made the car slightly longer and given us a little more leg room and a slightly bigger trunk. However, aside from minor things, this car is just about perfect. I think the car is powerful enough to deliver great performance. It is a little engine, debatably under-powered, but it does pack a great punch. Unfortunately you have to rev the engine pretty high to get that power.

This is the best built, tightest car I have owned. I am very glad I went with the Gen II ('99 and later) Miata for the more horsepower and better lines/style. It has been extremely reliable just like the reviews said. It is fun to drive. Used to own a Gen II RX7. This car may not be as fast, but is better built, handles better, and drives like a classic sports car.

I bought this used car with 55k miles for the fun, and it has delivered in spades. It's also surprisingly practical. Decent mileage (27 MPG in normal driving and 30 MPG hwy at 70 MPH), absolutely reliable, comfortable for this 5'11" 62 year-old. I find that I can transport most anything I want to with a little imagination. I've added a roll bar and so can even carry lumber in good weather. Overall, it's the easiest automotive smile I've encountered, is relatively inexpensive to purchase and earns its keep as well.

The Mazda Miata is the best-looking, most fun-to-drive car for less than $25,000... Plain and simple. While not producing loads of low-end torque or high horsepower, Mazda has put together a total driving experience that rivals that of its much higher-priced, German counterparts. The wonderful steering feel and crisp transmission contribute greatly to the astounding overall handling characteristics of this car. A bit cramped with the top up, but once it is lowered, all is forgiven! If you are looking for a reliable, unique (10th anniv edition - I love mine!) and fun-to-drive car, look no further.

I'm from Michigan and the Miata was an impulse buy for me. But I can live with all the impracticalities because it is so fun and involving to drive. With winter tires it fares decently in snowy conditions too. There are many faster cars out there, but the point of the Miata is the handling and feel. Friends always compliment on how classy and sleek the car looks.

I have owned this car since Mazda beefed up the exterior to add more "muscle" to its look in 1999 - that is almost 20 years ago. All I can say is that my car is still fun to drive (I tell people: "I don't run errands, I drive my car to get things done.") I just put $2,000+ into repairs that were needed. My take: This car doesn't owe me anything, and it's still fun to drive.

They call it the Miata Grin. You can't help but smile while behind the wheel of this car! The control the Miata gives you is amazing. The drop top is simple to put up and down. Stock audio system blares loud enough to be heard on the fast LA freeways and the cd player hardly ever skips. This is NOT a car for the big & tall. I've had passengers who are over 6ft tall & they were not comfy. It fits me just fine at 5'6". The Miata looks fast, but isn't capable of winning races against most Mustangs or Firebirds. Ok, so I tried it. Parking is a breeze- it can fit in spaces other cars can only dream about! And the cup-holder? I'd like to say, what cup-holder?

I drive a lot of sports cars in my job, and although the Miata is not all that fast, it pegs the needle on the fun gauge. This is my second one. Its light weight and excellent suspension design make it a great ride in the twisties. Add the availability of hundreds of inexpensive aftermarket upgrades, and you can tailor your Miata for everything from daily driver to track-day monster. I use mine as a weekend fun car, not a daily driver. The other big plus is the reliability and easy maintenance of a Miata. They are so simple. Simplicity means there isn't much to go wrong, and when something does go wrong, you can often fix it yourself rather easily.

(plus some other little nik nacs) and you have one sweet ride, no firebird in the land will give you much challenge! and it is still very streetable!! i have two and the one i told you about is the onee i drive, the other is race only in scca miata spec showroom stock B. i recomend these to anyone under 6'2"

This car is a blast to drive. It is quick and very stable - the car can't be upset. The top is rarely up on my car. Very reliable. Only complaints are a check engine light that refuses to go off and a couple of occasions when the oil cap has blown off (what a mess!). The car is a great conversation starter and often causes people to think that I'm wealthy!

Never before had I had an emotional attachment to a vehicle. The Miata is not particularly fast, but fast enough with power to spare in 6th gear at 80mph, tops out (rev limited) somewhere beyond that. Power curve on the engine starts pulling at about 3000 rpm and doesnt stop til well over 6000 - engineers call it "jerk" (dA/dT for the nerds), such that you feel it pushing you into the seat in every gear. Mazda put VVT for wider torque the 2000+ cars, and IMHO, messed up the jerk curve. In 5 years of pushing the traction limits, I had only one mechanical problem; an electronic switch in the transmission was fixed under warranty. Traded the car in for a 4WD, I miss driving the Miata.

Direct steering...being one with the road, responsive, wind in your hair driving experience..that's my Miata. Many opportunities to customize available in the aftermarket to make it truly your Miata..whether more performance, enhanced appearance/comfort items you name it, it's available for this car. Car is an excellent autocrosser and loves the track as well! If you use soft luggage, storage is adequate for weekend trips... If you use dedicated snow tires, its' a 4-season vehicle (even here in Iowa) except on those days NOBODY should be on the roads...buy it, you'll love it.

I bought a high-mileage Miata on eBay with the intent to convert it to an electric drive. The little car has been so much fun that I kept putting off the conversion. Although not a muscle car, I find that it has enough power, combined with the incredible handling, to make any driver smile from ear to ear. Incredibly reliable with lots of DIY resources available on the internet to fix little issues and find parts. I impressed my wife by being a Sunday mechanic for the first time with this car, and replacing soft top myself. Also added a roll bar for great looks. Car still turns heads.

I bought this car in the summer of 2008. It had 140,000 miles...new top w/glass back window. I had water pump and timing belt replaced right when I bought it. Not that it necessarily needed it, but I just wanted to get it done in case. The "check engine light" came on not long after I had it. Replaced Cat converter with a cheap one. Light came on again later. Replaced Cat w/ factory one..no problems, but it wasn't cheap (1K). Other than that, this car has been great...Knock on wood...had a little problem w/power windows but was a very minor fix. I really like this car, even though I get ribbed by my friends for driving a "chick car"...but I don't care. Now has 150,000 miles on it.

Have driven this car daily for almost 7 years. Only repairs ever needed were the tires and the battery, until just 6 months ago, when the brake pads were replaced. The car still drives like it did when it was new. This is the best engineered, and most reliable car I have ever owned. I just had it repainted, because I plan to keep it for many more years.

I have been trying to force myself to think about retiring my miata to pick up a more practical BMW 530i. Heck, I only use this car from April-October. But, those are some fun months with the Miata. It is quick, nimble and fun to drive. You can't drive anywhere without someone yelling out "Nice car." Even on a cool day, you can still take down the top and crank the heat to enjoy the experience.

Purchased this car with 58K in March as a daily driver. Already put 10K add is drives great. Gas mileage is awesome. Had to replace the master & slave on the clutch -- plastic cracks after 10 years. Also, just put in new plugs, wires and timing belt. Runs like new! I drive 40 miles each way to work and love to drop the top on nice days. It makes the commute in ATL way more tolerable. Drove from Atlanta to Jacksonville, FL - 6 hours one way. The car was more comfortable than you would expect on a long drive. Don't get me wrong. This is not the optimal distance car but you won't be miserable on long drives.

Wow! What am amazing car! Amazing performance for a 4-cylinder, and surprisingly roomy on the inside. Bose audio is great, and the hardtop was included as well. Plenty of style, plenty of fun, and plenty of saved gas money in your wallet. A great choice if you are in dire need for some serious fun, but can't spring for that $50,000 convertible.

Awesome. That's all I can say. Lots-o-low end torque to make a performance car drivable in the city. Loads of fun, to say the least, in quick turning mountain roads and the short shift is a beautiful thing.

I honestly look forward to the most routine errands or just any excuse to drive my Miata. The style and look of this gem turns heads everywhere I go. I love my Miata.
