Jeep "Swiss Army Knife"
I love my 2016 Jeep Patriot 4WD High Altitude. This is the only vehicle my wife and I own. It has been incredibly reliable and have proven to be very versatile. It's fantastic on wet or snow covered roads. Routine service is very reasonable. It is a darn shame Jeep no longer builds this vehicle.

Great commuter vehicle
It is what it is: a small practical utility vehicle. It's not for red light racers. I bought from a rental car marketer. It had 35000 miles on it. Had a large truck that couldn't pass a gas station. So far very happy with the Patriot. I will never purchase a new car ever again. I can't afford to pay for their palatial buildings. I got this for $13200 out the door. Local dealer wants $13600 before tag & taxes for a 2013 manual Patriot. Only problem I have had with it is the front MacPherson struts developed leaks. They were easy to change. The rears are another story. (got a full set as cheap as a pair) Still very satisfied with the vehicle. Only note is: it is very easy for an unawares driver to "bump" it into the manual shift mode.

DO NOT BUY
ZERO STARS! Worst decision I ever made in MY LIFE. Bought mine new, got the Sport base model. Throttle body went out at 35k. Clutch went out at 50k. Found out the engine will go out at 150k. This thing is a money dump. Radio went out after 4 years of owning it. I'm trying to sell mine now and get out before it completely dies on me. The worst anxiety driving this thing, as I am always waiting for something to break. Alternator has gone out x3 times! Only have 91k on it. I have driven a clutch my whole life and never heard of one going out at 50freakingK!. Hella cabin noise, which is easier for me to tell when something is about to break but that's about it. I have taken well care of my Jeep as it was my first car I ever bought brand new and with a loan. And lord do I wish I never did. Good seats. That's the only nice thing I can say, and ok MPG as I have the clutch vs and it gets about 26 on average. DO NOT BUY THIS CURSED OBJECT. YOUR WELCOME! 🙏
Could not hate this car more!
What a piece of crap. I readily admit that my credit is a bit challenged and so I was basically forced into this car. It is cute and comfortable and I'm a single mom who needed more reliable transportation for my family. Also, while attending work meetings, I needed a vehicle that would not be embarrassing to be seen getting into afterwards! So, into the Patriot I went. Cute and comfortable is about all the good I have to say about this rattletrap. There is absolutely no power, the engine is better suited to a Geo Metro or something. It cannot pull the weight of the Patriot at all. This also contributes to the utter lack of acceleration and low gas mileage. The Bluetooth barely works - I have ended up literally screaming at my dash, trying to get it to understand the number I am asking it to dial. Note - that doesn't work either... First world problems, I know, but if it exists within the vehicle I am paying for, it would be nice if it worked. The tires slip in the rain - I'm in Washington, so you can imagine how fun that is - and the snow is impossible. I can drive in it, but the vehicle cannot. My brakes began squealing about a month after I purchased the car. And now, after owning the vehicle for about 14 months, my alternator just went out. I drive quite a bit between my work commute and weekend adventures and I am so incredibly disappointed in this purchase. In short, run, don't walk from this awful vehicle. Getting a 4-Runner next time!!

Squeaky Brakes
3 months after purchasing my patriot the brakes began to squeal extremely loud. Mac Haik in Georgetown, Tx says the squalling brakes on the patriot is normal. The General Manager, Eric Stewart will not reply to any of my emails nor will her call me to discuss replacing my brakes. When I express my concerns with my brakes by email, I'm contacted by a salesman offering to take my brand new patriot for a used vehicle. All I really want is to have my brakes replaced so they no longer squeal.

Short drivers avoid!
I'm in this rental for 3 weeks now. I have bruises all over my right knee. There is a panel under the steering wheel that I constantly bump into. The seats are not adjustable enough. I'm unable to sit high enough to see, if I want uninjured legs; pushing the seat back, I sit uncomfortably stretched.

Underpowered and lousy gas mileage. Cheap!
Thank goodness it was only a rental. I understand that one may sacrifice performance for better mileage or vice-versa, but this car delivers neither. It was constantly hunting for the right gear ... just awful. As others have already said, the mileage is crap, especially when considering what a wheezebox the thing is. Toss in the small tank and I was shocked at how quickly the fuel gauge dropped. Seats were not very comfortable, either. Thankfully, we only had it for a day, as it was a replacement for another rental, which died near the end of our vacation. That first car (Chevy Malibu) was consistently giving us 34 MPG in mixed driving. The Patriot didn't come close, even though it was 100% highway driving. Had this been our vehicle for the whole trip, it would've been miserable. I cannot believe rental companies consider this at the same level as the "full size" cars. I know never to make the mistake of renting a "compact SUV", as I might get stuck with one of these again. Who knows? Maybe other compact SUVs are just as bad. These definitely belong in the sub-$18K range. Just awful.

Not worth it
In hindsight, I needed a car quickly and jumped the gun too quickly. The Jeep Patriot has not lived up to the expectations I have of The Jeep brand. I should have paid closer attention to the reviews and the mechanical issues these vehicles have.

Good concept, poor followthrough
If engineering is to automotive as pitching is to baseball, Chrysler has no bullpen... still. I've owned more than 30 automobiles in my life and only 2 other Chrysler's before this, now I remember why. As a lifelong mechanic I have a very strong love of good engineering. It makes working on things much easier, less frequent, and should make the usefulness/usability much more enjoyable. It is in this area that my Jeep falls way short. First I'll start with what I actually appreciate about my little Patriot. The leather seats are visually appealing and hold up quite well to standard use. Steering is tight, feels good with less body roll than I anticipated. Braking is smooth, provided by all wheel disks, and doesn't have any quirks to it, something I love since I live in an area that frequently gets snow. I appreciate the storage spaces seemingly stuffed into nearly every place they can put one (more on one of these particularly later), especially the large cubby above the glove box. Steering wheel audio controls are well located and easy to utilize. The 6sp automatic transmission shift well, not great, but well; perhaps a reprogram of the TCM would keep it from shifting too soon and bogging, this is better than many of these types of transmissions but since it is sourced from Hyundai I suppose it makes sense. The manual shift mode and location of that is far superior in my mind than the thumb button my wife's Focus had, and for this type of vehicle, better in my mind than even paddle shifters. Cargo room is plenty for the size and easily accessible and the back seat is plenty for my kids. Sadly, this is where the good ends and the limp arm of the pentagon's pitching team starts throwing wild balls. First, the little 4 squirrel engine is under-powered, noisy at anything above an idle, and considering the lackadaisical acceleration, falls short even in the economy range. I would have happily exchanged some MPG for enough power to get out of its own way without having to rap 5K on the tach. My 2008 V6 Mustang has much more acceleration, far better performance, far less engine noise, weighs more and nearly matches the Jeep at the pump. Considering the Jeep has almost 10 years of "innovation" on the mustang, and even more when you consider how old the for 4.0l V6 design is, I guess I expected more. I know what you're all saying, comparing a mustang to a Jeep is unfair, but it's what I've got. The automatic transmission seems to shift a little early for my taste, causing some bogging and slippage, but not a major deal breaker. And this is where the mediocrity ends and the downright poor comes in, the day to day usefulness. Driving the Jeep is downright one of the most uncomfortable and unusable space I've ever had the displeasure of occupying. The side bolstered seats are too narrow and dig into my outer thighs and glutes. I know I need a diet, but c'mon here, it hurts. As mentioned before, the little storage spots are great, except the phone/cigarette pack one below the park brake handle, making it not only useless but a lesson in ignorance of design. The cup holders... ugh the cup holders. The front cup holders are both impeded by something. You can't pull a cup of coffee out of the front without hitting the shifter that is located directly above it, and the rear is covered by the center arm rest. Every car I've driven and used the sun visors pull to detach from the hook, these you push which is oddly clumsy feeling. The visors don't cover enough of anything to be useful, when moved to the side don't extend nearly far enough out, and are clumsy putting back. The A-pillar is seeming enormous and the B-pillar is right next to my head if I don't want my knees in my chest making this one of the most view obstructed vehicles I've been in. Lack of some very basic features like a telescopic steering wheel even when equipped with tilt, blind spot door mirrors, a fuel calculator on even a mid-level equipped package make this seem overly stripped down. There are enough of these little things adding up to the point that there is no indication that the cruise control has been set just get's me irritated. My Jeep has the jack-off drivers seat height adjustment and I'm just going to say it "TO THE ENGINEERING WORLD, THIS IS TRASH, QUIT PRODUCING THEM." But, if they will continue, at least leave enough room for a mans arm to access it since I have to open my door to adjust mine.

Pleased it was only a rental
Interior feels cramped. Hard to get out of the drivers seat with the stearing wheel in the way. Stereo genuinely is confusing to use and doesn't sound good. The lack of power and the transmission was a nightmare. Cruise control was good.

Small engine but I'm still loving it
Going from a 6 to a 4 cylinder engine is a bummer. I'm loving my heated leather seats, bluetooth radio and it's always great to have 4 wheel drive. I just graduated college so this is the newest vehicle I've owed. Basically I'm biased since I don't know of anything better. It's quite noisy when I'm going down the highway at 60/70mpg. I read that's due to cheap material and the style of the vehicle.

I love it, Dont get the Poor Professional reviews
I had purchased a used 2017 Patriot sport, 5 speed manual in early 2019. It had only been on the road for 18 months but already had nearly 60k miles on it. 2.0L 5 speed manual, pretty bare but did have power windows and AC. I had it for 3 years and loved it. Fast forward to Dec 2021 and the Patriot was Totalled, side impact from by a kid running a red light. No one was hurt but I was devistated over the loss. I loved the car. Unbelievably I found a like new condition 2016 with only 26k miles on it! This time a Latitude with 2.4L, with both the sound and sun package so I not only got car with 50K less miles on it but scored the bigger engine, moon roof, Bang & Olfsen sound system and still 10 months left on the factory warranty. Still the 5 speed Manual that I love to drive. The replacement Patriot drives great, has been reliable and handles really well for an SUV. Seems like no matter how i drive it 22mpg is what it gets. Not exactly good but to be honest I do well enough that I dont pay attention to gas prices. I have to drive and if I harped on gas prices Id probably have a nervous breakdown. recently took it for the first long drive, 400 miles from AZ ito central California. The patriot zipped up the steep mountains at a happy 70mph with plenty of power to spare and the seats were comfy. Road noise and a bit of wind noise were easily covered up by the out standing sound system. Interior layout is ergonomic and easy to navigate. Plastic is a bit cheap and can be scratched easily but the fit and overall look is good and a clean simple layout that I like. My first patriot was super reliable and so far the Latitude seems to be just as solid. The patriot seems to be one of those cars that has a bit of a cult like following and those that have them love them. Reviewers for some reason like to pick it apart but I dont get it. Many of the Patriots have crazy high miles, 400k plus and are still chugging along. How much more can ask from a car?

Don't buy a jeep patriot
They are lemons. Having my brakes squeak and go almost all the way to the floor board to get it to stop. The jeeps rpm will fly up really high when you are driving normal. It also likes to roll backwards in park. Don't waste your money. This is my 2nd Chrysler, Jeep product and they had to buy my 200 back at 9,000 miles. Beware!!!! I no longer have the jeep patriot.

Cheap jeep
Rented this tin box. Been in it 10 minutes and cant wait to get out of it! Very cramped, loud, rough and no arm room. ONE usb port!!!! So no charging phone and using gps! Also all the windows are fogged up, cant see out of them. Defrost is on high and in the rear. Very dangerous. I would walk before I would buy this piece of crap! Does not compare to my 2005 Ford Freestyle!!!!

Way underpowered
Rented on vacation. The engine is completely punchless and to accelerate on the interstate literally requires flooring it. Maybe ok around town, but barely interstate worthy. Also, the cargo bay can't accommodate a regular golf bag.

Just not good- CHEAP
I had this car as a rental and pulled over just to write this review. The whole car feels cheap. The center console is dated and the cup holder is far too low. No USB charging in a car made in 2016 tells me Jeep just doesn't care about keeping up with the times. However, by far the worst feature is the engine. The car is brutally slow and doesn't get anywhere near the claimed highway gas mileage. PASS ON THIS CAR.

Bad wheels and tires
Bought new in London ON Canada. At about 35,000 miles, 55,000 kms, Original Firestone’s tires became bold. Wheel studs v rusty, knots bad quality, got damaged while taking wheels out to replace, v v hard to loosen knots, one stud got broken. V v weak in accelerating. Jeep Sport in 90’s 4L 4x4 way much better made and stronger.

Dependable ride
Basically a good suv meeting my basic expectations. I have the 2.4 with a 6 speed automatic transmission. It is most at home on the open road with a smooth ride and comfortable seating. Urban driving is a little rough and the transmission sometimes has trouble finding the right gear at low speeds. Fine in the snow and power is responsive. Pleasantly of cargo space and the box design means carrying bulky items with ease. Overall: dependable with minimum dazzle dazzle. My biggest and ongoing complaint is the braking. Clunky and loud, but effective especially with new pads. Bout 85,000 miles on it so far and hoping for another trouble free 85K

Strange problems for such low miles.
This is a story about two Patriots, my 2016 and my wife's 2014. These are adequate vehicles for retirees who don't need to carry family members. For that you need a minivan. Some folks commented about the 2.4 performance. If you ride Japanese motorcycles you get used to bouncing the tach needle off the rev limiter. These make 172 horsepower but it's all above 5000 rpm, so just squeeze the gas pedal and go. Unless the throttle body fails on you...both of them failed around 40000 miles. NHTSA apparently feels that sudden power loss that can result in an accident is somehow acceptable. I complained; they don't care. Update 1/17/2025: It's still a decent car for retirees.

Bought brand new
I bought my Patriot brand new, with only 15 miles on it. 6 years later, I've replaced the two wheel bearings, TWICE, the mainfold, so many sensors, brake pads quicker than normal, AC is going out and now, the ABS system is starting to act up. A car should not last only 6 years. I loved and still, a bit, love my patriot. I do not love that it has deteriorated at such a quick pace.

Why there is a Lemon Law
I am not sure I should blame Jeep, the NY (I know, I know) dealer I purchased it from or BOTH!I should throw my local(2) dealerships where I went for service under the bus also since it was my neighborhood mechanic that actually was forthcoming with me about the issues and actually managed to get it running again after months and months of getting the run around. I have purchased used vehicles for decades now so I prepare and expect that there may be an issue that needs addressing upon or after purchase so I buy with that awareness. This vehicle and the situation with the dealer was so outrageous that one of the local dealerships where we had taken it the first time it stopped working (completely!) called to tell us to come pick up the car because they refused to work on it anymore.Several times the car was completely and utterly unresponsive and left me stranded. I actually had to tow it so many times we exhausted our AAA towing benefits for the cycle/year. So, more $ out of my pocket. Even the extended warranty rep that I reached out to desperately looking for assistance told me there wasn’t anything he could do but, “off the record it sounds like you should get some legal advice”. As much as I appreciated his honesty, it only lead me down a frustrating and costly road dealing with lawyers; plural. I paid to have the lawyer(s) correspond with the dealership through certified mail only to be told that the dealership could choose to ignore the formal communication after a response waiting period of 30 days each time a letter is sent and that any protocol beyond that is pretty much non existent. The lawyer did offer to write another letter. I declined and kept my $. I know what you are thinking. Trust me. I have had everyone from the mailman to my mother say, ‘you should pursued the Lemon Law’. OFC I tried that but never received communication back from the NY office listed on my purchase of sale original paperwork.Almost comically, I wrote, sort of like this, a long and rambling letter to my local news consumer help advocate. Yup. Not able to help with a Lemon Law complaint. The two “excellent” pieces of advice I got “off the record” from two separate letter writing lawyers : 1. “You should never have bought a used vehicle. They are too much of a risk. Lease next time” 2. “You should trade it in and buy a new car”. Brilliant advice, right?!IF I could afford those options would I be futilely looking for help rectifying this situation?Would I be driving a car that I have had less than a year, that was out of service for more than half the time I owned it, that has cost me thousands of dollars above sale price, countless hours of wasted time trying to find help, talking to dealerships that probably were just laughing behind my back, paying for rentals and Ubers, and daily praying the lemon doesn’t stop working while I am on the highway or during a Nor’easter

2016 Patriot
I'm a Jeep fan so I might be prejudice. Had a 2011 Patriot we put 130k miles on. The extended warranty on some components was a good thing for us. Regular maintenance enabled us to enjoy it .. couldn't make a favorable deal on the 2016. It was a very clean low mileage vehicle

Great for me
For me, it's the perfect vehicle. Comfortable with a little extra room. It doesn't have a lot of power, but the gas mileage is good for an SUV. This model has a couple of bells and whistles my previous model didn't have, like power windows and seats, the backup camera, and cruise control. It's a simple vehicle, but that's the kind of vehicle I like.

2016 Jeep Patriot overheating
My vehicle started shaking and over heating the other night after putting gas at a random gas station. My truck was running fine but it needed gas so I stopped at gas station and left the car running while I pumped gas and by the time I finished putting $10 in gas my truck sounded like it was choking out and sounded as if it wanted to stop running so I quickly turned off my truck and tried to restart it and it sounded as if the ignition was stuck in the on position and it kept on trying to crank on its own...so I didn't know what to do so I was thinking possibly my battery was weak so I got my battery charger and jumped my truck and it started. So I started driving and then I noticed the tempature gauge was rising to the hot position so I stopped and checked the coolant and it appeared to be empty so I refilled it by adding coolant to the reservoir and let my vehicle cool off for a hour or so and made it home. My husband changed the thermostat and the coolant tempature sensor and the radiator but it was still appearing to run hot and to not want to start without sounded like it was stuck in the on position so I had a wrecker take it to a local mechanic and he changed out something called the evaporator sensor and put a new timing belt on and told me it was fixed when i picked it up it is STILL doing the same exact thing
