Outstanding used car for the daughter

The 2018 Compass checks all the boxes as the car for my daughter. I found a latitude with 39K miles and 4wd. The car looks good on the outside, has nice interior finishes (like the leather steering wheel, and soft rubber finishes), carplay with a nice size screen and more than enough power to get on the highway and drive to a university (and be able to do so in the snow....) as a Dad - I have this car a 5 star used car rating. We have had the car now for 5K miles - I added some new tires... but other than an oil change - all good to go with the Compass.

Bought a 2018 compass latitude new, at 28k miles started burning oil. Didn’t know until I checked the dipstick and there was nothing on it. The dealership tried saying I was responsible if it needed a motor because I was doing the oil changes. Come to find out it’s a common issue with the 2.4 motors and then had them do an oil consumption test. They said it didn’t consume enough to put a new motor in even though it was burning 2qts a week. Got corporate involved and finally after three months they scoped the motor and all the cylinder walls were scored. It was a candidate for a new motor but they were on back order. Finally had enough and got a new car and terminated the lease, there problem now. On top of that problem the car also had shifting problems were it would shift very hard randomly and it shut off on the highway once. Save yourself and stay away from these cars. Nothing but problems and many reports to back it up

TERRIBLE, UNSAFE, DO NOT PURCHASE!!!!!!!

Only buy this car if you are looking to live on edge (literally). The manufacturing of it is absolutely careless. I am two years into my lease now and 6 months in my emergency brake turned on by itself TWICE while I was driving. Once making a left hand turn and once making a left hand turn. Both very startling experiences. When I brought my car to the dealer they informed me it was happening due to no oil in my engine. Mind you, the car never informed me it needed an oil change and even if it did, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TURNED ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING TWICE. SO CARELESS. Then last week I was driving down my street and I stopped at a stop sign and the car literally would not drive after I stopped. I then shut the car off and turned it on, when I put into drive.m, the car rolled backwards. I then tried it again and when I put the car in drive I heard a loud bang and the car shook. My transmission had dropped. Again, took it to the dealer and they informed me that this happened due to three computer updates that my car needed. This forced the transmission to drop. Again, my car did not inform me of the updates. I then emailed Jeep about the manufacturing problems and they did not even read my email and said that no oil and “low transmission” fluid is normal in a brand new car. Obviously this guy did not read my email. Would not even recommend to my worst enemy. Will never drive a Chrysler product again. DO NOT BUY UNLESS YOU HAVE A DEATH WISH.

Excessive oil consumption

JSan, 01/23/2021

This car is known to have excessive oil consumption. There is no warning lights that alert you the oil is low. The car will turn off and parking brake will engage in mid drive, even on the highway! Jeep will do nothing about it except suggest you get an oil change and come in every 500 miles for an oil consumption test. Do not buy!!

I drove gun jeeps in Vietnam and fast forward to my 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk, the military stuff we had were nowhere as agile, "determined" and giddy-up-go as my Trailhawk. I drive it on a ranch here in Texas in places I'd never dare take the Jeep I drove in Vietnam. I'm 6 feet tall and can adjust the seat to where I am comfortable on short trips or driving through several states. I can haul two of my dogs in the back, or groceries - although for large loads I use a pickup or van we have. The only downside I have with this Trailhawk is the DARNED backup camera/display is impossible to adjust the light level at night. I've had it back to the dealership several times to get the software flashed, and the control to adjust the level of brightness for the display works fine for about a week, then goes wacko again and it looks like staring into a flame thrower because the dimmer can't lower the light intensity of the screen when backing up at night.

2018 Jeep Compass with 6,000 miles. One month after purchasing battery died. This past weekend the car completely turned off as I was headed down an exit ramp coming off of an interstate with my 95 year old Aunt in vehicle. We are lucky we weren't killed. Dealership seems to think nothing is wrong.

I love my new Jeep Compass. 35 hwy and about 26 around town. Feels very solid and safe on road and off. 6 speed stick is easy and fun. Engine is why I went Jeep, amazing engine, Tigershark rocks, very smooth and quiet, shines down low, pull itself up mountains in Montana with ease. Seats are great.

A few problems but overall OK

I had a 2018 Compass for about a year. I chose it for highway comfort and cargo space. It was comfortable on the highways, and handled potholes and frost heaves with ease, and delivered great fuel economy. I was getting about 31.5 overall MPG and on long easy trips it got into the high 30s MPG. Since I drive a lot (35,000/year) I really appreciated the fuel economy. I had two problems: 1) It consumed a lot of motor oil. It improved from 1000/qt to 3000/qt over the course of the 30,000 miles I owned it, but I still consider that excessive. While I expected a new engine to use some oil at first, I also expected it to drop to zero oil consumption after a few thousand miles; that never happened. In the eternal scheme this wasn't a crisis, but it meant I had to add a quart between oil changes because it couldn't make it that far. UPDATE: Jeep came out with a software update that solved the oil consumption problem. Apparently valve timing was sucking oil into places it shouldn't go and the update solved the problem. It was a recall on the earlier years of the 2nd generation Compass and became part of the initial programming since. 2) The other was a grinding noise from the drive train between 30-45MPH. My dealer did a software update that moved the sound up to about 45-55MPH where road noise pretty well drowned it out. I never experienced any performance problems. The OEM tires weren't very good in snow, but LRR tires probably can't be. I chose studded snow tires for winter which provided much better snow traction but also lowered my fuel economy by about 2-3MPG overall -- that's a significant drop. Regardless, I appreciated the better traction and I consider the MPG loss was an acceptable trade-off. You may have noticed this review is written in the past tense. That's because this car only lasted a year due to a car accident. Sadly it wasn't a really hard hit and the vehicle wasn't hurt that bad, but all those airbags deploying turned a minor accident into a total loss. While the side airbag may have saved my Wife a headache, the under-dash airbags bruised my legs pretty bad, took about a month for the pain to subside. Would I buy another? I did -- a 2019 -- mostly because I have a good relationship with my dealer. The good news is that my 2019 does not seem to use as much oil as the 2018. I'm at 2500 miles and the oil level has barely dropped on the dipstick. The 2019 still makes a grinding noise, but only at speeds less than 30MPH where its hardly heard at all. Best of all the 2019 seems to be delivering even better fuel economy--about 1MPG better overall. Conclusion: Its a good vehicle, but if you buy one, keep an eye on the dipstick! UPDATE: I'm now at 30,000 miles on my replacement Compass (2019 )and so far it's not using any oil. UPDATE: Although I no longer own my 2018 Compass, I was notified of a recall to fix the oil consumption problem. In conversation with other Compass owners, the recall seems to have solved their oil consumption problem. UPDATE (2/17/22): I'm now at 80,000 miles. Still no problems. UPDATE (2/17/23) I'm now at 110,000 miles. Had to do a brake job. Otherwise no problems. UPDATE (2/20/24) As noted above, my 2018 Compass was wrecked and replaced with my 2019 Compass. See my review there. I won't update this thread again since the vehicle no longer exists.

Have been driving my 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk a month now no problems at all so far. I love the way this Compass drives and gets through heavy snow excellent. I have a 70mile drive round trip to work and home and I am very comfortable in this Jeep sit up high and straight and seats curve your body just right. So far mpg is ok not great so far avg around 26 to 30 on highway I'm not easy on the accel and most of time cruise is set at 71 to 76. Some have complained of 9 speed but I have not experienced any concerns at all when driving a round town or hwy., mine may be later model build with proper software updates new vehicles in last 3 -4 years seem to have updates all the time just ask your dealer if any can be performed when bring in for oil change. Love the looks to have not really went off roading per say but that is not why I bought the Trailhawk model I bought it because it looks cool. Look I test drove other makes of this size SUVS and they all just seemed a little boring look all cars have there problems some a bit more than others but they are all fairly equal to each other so I do expect to bring any car I own into the shop once in awhile I have owned many different manufacture vehicles and they all had to have some repairs and or maintenance, after all they are name by imperfect human beings. Love my Jeep! its a Jeep thing ya know

I have had this car for 6 months and it just recently broke down while driving down the road. Everything started flickering on the spirometer screen and the car just shut off. It started again after ten minutes and the engine light was on. I drove to work and had it towed to get fixed. The Jeep dealership said it was a module and they fixed it. A week later the car wouldn’t start again. It wasn’t the battery because the Jeep dealership had my battery life on my screen displayed and it still had 40% left. I think having all these fancy electronic accessories is poorly made and I regret buying this car. I am a single mom who needs a reliable car and I feel like I have been scammed by Jeep. I guess live and learn. I will never buy a Jeep again!!!!

I have a new 2018 Jeep Compass that I bought in May. This car has been to the dealership more than I can remember, at this point, I should be on their payroll. Transmission and Brakes are my biggest issue with this car. The driver seat is very uncomfortable, storage space is a joke, the cup holders are so far down that I spill my drink everytime I wear my coat. The headlight aren't bright enough in my opinion, it only covers a short distance. Don't even get me started on Uconnect -_- they have poor customer service, the touchscreen is always freezing ( sometimes while using my backup camera) I can go on and on about this car. It hasn't been a year and I am trading it in.

This car is junk it burns oil so much u constantly have to watch your oil. Do not take on the road for long trips because your car will go out and it looses almost 1 qwt of oil every thousand miles and the engine and transmission light is on and I’m just getting to 30k miles worst car ever.

Do not buy this car. I have a white Compass. The lift gate handle is turning yellow. The front and rear fascia are a coffee color. FCA claims the color is within spec. Yet, every white Compass built before August 2018 has tinted fascias. The car is noisy and rough. The engine is seriously underpowered. I am afraid to merge on highways because this car does not move. Every once in a while, the car will pick up speed and you feel this slingshot sensation.

My 2018 Jeep Compass has been in the shop more than any car I have ever had. I hate it. It stalls, I take it to the dealer. All they say is the oil is low. It broke down on me the other day and the ETC lightning bolt came up on the dashboard. All they said again was that the oil was low. They said it was ready and I told them that that is bs. and I filed a case with the manufacturer and called a lawyer. I want out of this death trap. Anyone that can help me, please email me jwms210@gmail.com.

My 2018 Jeep Compass is a death trap!! It stops in the middle of the road with no warning, after time it will drive again. I took it right back to Jeep Performance Auto Mall Dr. Cols. Oh. their script is it's a safety feature, I nearly lost brains trying to explain a car stopping in the middle of the road is not safe! All I want is my money back, they keep saying drive it 500 more miles knowing my warranty will expire. I've had it at the garage 6x I should of bought another Honda, that I can drive with confidence.

By far the worst car I’ve ever owned. Bought this brand new Jan of 2018, had nothing but problems. The engine has been burning oil like crazy. The engine is bone dry !! Can you believe that ? On a brand new car how could there be no oil. You have to get a oil change every 4K miles or even less. . Mind you it requires synthetic oil so that’s $70-$100 a pop every 3 months or so depending how much you drive or course. I’ve broken down twice because my engine ran out of oil. What a joke. Back up camera sucks, it always freezes but the main problem is the engine. Totally not reliable. God forbid you go a couple hundred miles over your next oil change, you’ll be calling a tow truck. As a matter of fact ,keep AAA on your speed dial. This car is a joke and should be taken off the market completely. I wish I had did some research before I bought this POS. Worst mistake ever. I miss my 07 solara. That car never gave me a problem and I was able to drive a little past the recommended oil change life, never broke down on me. Can’t believe how sucky this car is. Safe to say that I will never ever purchase a Jeep ever again. These cars are the worst. DO NOT PURCHASE A COMPASS. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!

I've driven both Trailhawk versions of the Cherokee and Compass. The interiors are basically identical, except for the red outlining and hilights in the compass, which really look best with a red exterior, then black, and silver. The huge difference is in the face and tires. The redesigned Compass looks like a smaller Grand Cherokee and a true Jeep. The slopenosed Cherokee does not.The tires and wheels on the Cherokee tho are great. The single combo on the Compass not only look pathetic for a four wheel drive capable Jeep, but no other choice is ironically a and obviously their way to save money by cutting corners.Add to this, the Compass sits lower and will achieve 30 mpg highway, but off road prowess will be less than desirable. The smart camper/hiker will sell the wheels and tire combo on the Compass back to Jeep and have the Cherokee's 18 inch combo installed. You can only get the 184 hp 4 cylinder in the Compass which for $31 to $33,000.00 is waay to underpowered. With a max 1500 lb. tow capacity, you should test drive some better suited cars.

Listen I want my 16’ Honda Accord back or even my 02 Camry I leased this car in oct 2018. By December I had a light come on for the auto on/off start engine . By January the car had been in dodges possession for 4x.l due to the light coming on 3x in one week with pictures for every date .The last time they had it for a week. My complaint started with my gas tank spilling gas when I would pump gas into the car. The light for the off/on engine . There’s a noise in the back of the car I have no clue what it is but it sounds like it will fall apart . The engine is loud and shakes! I was told my friend to check if I had oil and it wasn’t even time for an oil change . The car sounds so freaking loud and is literally brand new . My issues began at 2300 miles . Anyways the last time they had the vehicle for a week, I retrieved it with no gas ! The light has not come back on anymore which is alarming considering they did nothing to fix it because they We’re waiting for the light to come back In which they claim never did .So at this point I believe something is unplugged but I know nothing about this vehicle to fully investigate . Nothing was done at all to fix the issue I had for 3 straight days of the light coming on and now boom no light . They’re crooks. On top of that , the vehicle does stall! I have been on the highway and have felt the acceleration decrease dramatically . I have watched the ideal not switch gears . The back up camera is trash! It freezes all the time. I have to turn around so basically this feature is no good to me. For some reason when you turn the temperature it doesn’t stay synched. So you’ll basically be trying to warm up while the other side is stuck at whatever you had it previously on. Stupid ! If you have the vents on defrost it sounds like they’re clogged when I’m high. My engine for some reason is dusty ! I’ve recently noticed my Odometer having something tiny flash over it . No clue but it’s annoying . Two weeks ago my engine turned off by Itself upon cranking . It’s literally something new every week. You can also feel something move under your foot when turning sometimes. Maybe the suspension??? Not sure . I’m literally waiting for this car to just stop working or fall apart . Just don’t purchase this. Speaking with Chrysler does not help! I’ve already tried to get them to take it back. They said I could sign a new lease if I want however as well all know I will lose all sorts of money .

I just got the 2018 Compass Limited today. I did not want it because I loath FCA Products due to atrocious quality and spotty reliability. Unfortunately for me, my only option was the Compass or a Suburban. I should have stuck with the Suburban. For starters, the engine is incredibly loud. As soon as I started it up I noticed how loud it was. There is no smoothness. You can feel every revolution that those pistons make. There is also dismal power. And the transmission is not willing to let you really dip into the pedal because it doesn’t like to gear down. However, it will hold gears until your teeth rattle out. Keeping with problems of the engine, due to the uncertainty of how long I’ll be stuck with this pile of junk, I am fearing that the oil light will come on and I’ll end up with a broken rental car. Fuel economy is also lackluster. On the technology front, the auto start stop is not the greatest system I’ve seen. The roughness of the engine doesn’t help. My rental Compass is equipped with rain-sensitive wipers that only work when they want to. *I went into the UConnect menu to ensure they were on.* but it seems to be a common “poor quality” issue, which is no shock coming from a FCA product. The lane keep assist is...different. I feel as though it steers out of the lane instead of pushing you back in it. The blind spot monitor comes on whenever there is nothing near the car. That’s more of an annoyance than an issue. For some reason, the miles constantly blink. I don’t know why or what it means, but they blink. They keep track correctly, but constantly blink. The leather is very rubbery. The fit and finish is nothing to write home about. The plastic in the A-pillars actually came on clipped when I hit a bump and started vibrating and rattling. If you hit a bump, it sounds like the car is falling apart. Literally. Everything rattles. EVERYTHING. I do not recommend the 2018 Compass as a rental, much less a purchase.

Very cute car and it drives well, I got the 4x4 in dark gray. I was a little disappointed that I got a faulty car but the dealer was able to fix the problem. I got the car on a Friday evening, by Sunday the car was having issues! The engine turned off on me and all the interior lights were flashing, I tried turning the whole car off but it wasn't turning off. I waited and was bale to turn it off and back on, the engine light came on after that and the car did that 3 times. I took it back to the dealer Monday morning because the service department was close Sunday. I did not get to experience the joy of driving my new car, that was terrible! When I got my car back a week later my "brand new car" was all dirty and dusty on the outside and when I drove off the tire pressure and windshield fluid lights came on! It was so disappointing! I am still bothered by it. I know that the car issue was not the dealers problem but I feel like they should of been more understanding and should of contacted me the same week I took my car in. I contacted Jeep and the manager emailed me and said they would talk to the dealer and make sure that the car gets fixed but that was pretty much all they did. I am very disappointed with this car now. I would never buy a Jeep again.

I financed a 2018 compass from Riverdale Chrysler jeep dealer and noticed that the clock was changing hours on its own so went to the dealer to have the jeep checked. They ask me to leave the jeep overnight because it was not legal to drive it with the CLUSTER problem it had. It's been 6 weeks and I still don't have my jeep yet I'm making monthly payments and insurance payments. They promised the vehicle if I left it overnight and made 4 different promising dates for the problem to be solved and I'm still waiting. Don't recommend the compass to anyone

My wife and I are retired, mid60’s. We have a small home in Idaho Falls, ID and a smaller one in SLO, CA. Family! Already had a 2015 Wrangler Unlimited. Love it, but it is not comfortable for our frequent 1,100 mile drive. MPG for the Wrangler is about 17-20. Also have a 2014 Ford CMax energi plugin. Great snowflake urban car, but the Idaho conditions chew it up and spit it out! We desired a vehicle that is comfortable to drive, sturdy enough for Eastern Idaho (essentially off-road conditions all Winter-every where! And Winter might last for nine months! So beautiful though!! The extended sunroof takes advantage of Rocky Mountain awesomeness!), and gets good enough mpg so that I would not have a stroke when filling up in California! Our 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk has satisfied this difficult set of demands admirably! It handles all sorts of difficult road conditions with ease! It is very comfortable and has nice handling characteristics. Nice interior and sound system. Attractive exterior. The mpg is pretty decent for a 4wd vehicle. It is a fairly heavy vehicle. I routinely get 23-27 mpg. Worst was about 22. Best was about 31. I now have no complaints about performance. It did take a little while to get used to the engine and transmission. It is different than most vehicles I have driven. Smooth and deliberate acceleration works best for us. This is definitely not a sports car! I think the designers were more focussed on economy than responsiveness. This is such a subjective matter though! I am an old fogie who drives the speed limit, rarely with a fully loaded car. I find it cruises at 80 just fine on an Idaho freeway. If you want to go a lot faster than that, and a lot of folks do, this might not be the best vehicle for you. Also, on the Teton Pass with 4 passengers and some cargo, the transmission was having a tough time figuring out what to do. High altitude,10 percent grades can do that to a lot of cars though. It doesn’t have any such issues with just the two of us. Stop/Start feature can be a pain, but I think that is true for all manufacturers. At least you can shut it off with the Compass. I find no mpg benefit with Stop/Start running. Shutting it off is a good option. That’s the first thing my wife does after she starts it up. So overall, I think that the 2018 Jeep Compass Trailhawk is the most versatile vehicle I have ever owned. Over 20,000 miles with no issues. The reviews are all over the place. Owners seem to either love it or hate it. We are firmly in the group of lovers, not haters! We also have had good service from a dealer. That makes a big difference! Hope it stays this way because I don’t expect the resale value to be nearly as solid as the Wrangler’s. For $30K off the lot, I still think it was a good deal. When I was at the dealer today getting the 20K service, I walked around the lot, checking out the new vehicles. Sticker shock!! Ouch! I would like to keep driving this car for a long time!

I was looking at a base model Compass or Cherokee, but went with the trial hawk because its pretty. Big mistake. HUGE! About 25k miles in my mechanic noticed it didn't have adequate oil, during an oil change. Dealer said its normal, i need to check the oil everything i get gas "it says so in the owners manual". I bought this car brand new!! Did some research to find the 2.4 litre engine has an oil consumption problem. It took me 7 returns to the dealership to get the engine replaced. This is after it had shut off on me numerous times as I was driving. I chalked all problems up to this. Month after getting the new engine my car won't go over 29mph...transmission issue! The car is less than 3 years old and has 45k miles on it at this point. I'm trading it in for an older Toyota with more miles because they're more reliable.

The Compass with the 2.4L Airflow engine is horrible. Twice the jeep has shut off on me while driving. No notice beforehand. Very unsafe. Come to find out, there was no oil even showing on the dipstick. Completely empty and was no where near the mileage for an oil change. Come to find out this is normal. C'mon we are in 2020, I've never had a car run out of oil before. Mopar will do nothing about this defect with this engine. Researching this, it is quite common with this engine.

I was looking for a small suv that was well equipped. I have to parking it in a parking garage in the city and wanted something that would hit the oversized pricing and was easy to park on crowded city streets. I wanted an engagable 4wd system and with good ground clearance. It check the boxes and has been great. It's not the fastest, but it had the tech the safety and didn't have a cvt. Love it.

the dash dimmer dont work(software problem, all models) backup screen is so bright at night you have to cover it to see out of the car no dimmer option, my traction control and abs both made noise when driving in just a mist and something was pulling the steering wheel out of my hand for some reason later found out this is some kind self correcting steering but it kept trying to steer me into on-coming traffic so you have to be ready to fight this all the time, check engine light came on 43 miles from the dealer, didnt have it looked at because the company gave me the car and we are usually stuck with them after i told them i didnt want it in the first place, i carry a obd2 reader so i just pulled over and hit erase codes to get the light to go out, i havent drove it since...gas mileage is only about 12.8mpg because you have to run it almost floored to keep a speed of 70mph which is the avarage speed limit around here...i think the stock tires are too small for the size and weight of the car...which wound cause the hydroplaning and from the hydroplaning would cause the traction control system to kick in...not a good car for everyday use...sunday car for grandma maybe...hell my was free and i thought it was so dangerous that i only drove it once in 2 weeks because im afraid to get caught in the rain in it, Edmunds wants an update, company let me trade it in last August 2019, after repeated trips to dealer and all most every brake component replace the anti lock brakes were corrected, but the trans kept falling out of it at about 30,000 miles each time, never did figure out why the electronics went haywire every time it got wet, CV joints were replaced multiple times, it had 96 thousand some odd miles at trade in, not very comfortable for long drives, everything to rest your arms on is plastic, had to buy a lumber support cushion to try and help soften the seat, help a little bit, gas mileage did get a bit better at around 18mpg and highway about 230 miles a tank, I don't have have it any more but I will stick to my original post, maybe something grandma can use on Sunday

I got my 2018 compass brand new and have had for 1 year, 8 months. I love the look of that car, and it is easy to drive. However, mine has been in the shop now 4 times in 4 months. There are known engine problems on these cars. Mine started stalling out about 30 seconds after starting to drive. Took it in, said I needed an oil change(was 2000 miles before due) fine. 2000 miles later, stalls out again. Take it in, no oil in it...so they replace the engine...on a brand new car with 15000 miles. Have had the car back for 2 weeks, and just had to have it towed because I get the check engine light and a warning telling me to pull to safety, car will shut down soon. This time supposedly it's a faulty starter relay. I just do not trust this car and dont feel safe driving it anymore. The other super annoying thing is there is really no storage space in this car in regards to the consol/front. Also it sucks that you have to push the console back to use the 2nd cup holder.

The Jeep Compass Latitude is a great compact SUV. It handles well, and is especially sure-footed in snow and ice conditions. The interior, even at the standard Latitude trim level, is quite attractive. I recommend getting the safety package with blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alerts. That option is available at a reasonable price, without having to move up to the Limited model. All in all, considering the available options for the price, the handling and drive-ability, and the attractiveness of the Jeep, the 2018 Compass is a great car.

The engine stops at every stop sign, light, or intersection. It takes a second or so for the engine to come back on before the car moves. This is the worst feature ever! You can disable it, but you have to push the disable button every single time you start the engine. The worst feature ever when driving in the city. Second, the back seat is the worst for adults. The seatbelt is too small, and gradually crushes you as the gear pulls the seatbelt tighter and tighter. When sitting with my kid in the back in long trips it’s impossible to wear the seatbelt. Finally, the cargo space is really small. You are lucky if you can fit two suitcases in the back. The technology is great and love that part of it, just some comfort and convenience things they greatly overlooked when designing this.i grantee not a single engineer designing this ever say in the back once to check for comfort issues.
