I did a lot of research and it all pointed to the 1995-1997 XJ6. Being in the car industry and never having owned a Jaguar before, I talked to as many foreign car mechanics and Jaguar owners as possible. I bought the 1997 XJ6L with 97000 miles and had it checked out. The mechanic said it was excellent. My wife, who has had 3 new mercedes benz in a row, drives it and loves it. No more high payments, a paid for jaguar is the way to go. it's roomy, comfortable, drives smooth and looks great. It get more compliments than on our last 3 mercedes. We are very satisfied.

165,000 miles

I had always wanted a jag, and I finally got one. It has 165,000 miles and it still runs great. One of the factors in buying such a high mile car was the straight 6. It seems to me that most of the old jags still on the road are xj6s. I love to drive this car more than any I've owned. Buying such a car is not without some troubles, it needed an alternator.

Best thing from Jaguar ever

When I bought my 1997 VP, it had 96,000 on it. Purchase price from a dealer was right around $6,000 - don't ask why they go so cheap, I think American buyers have been so scared by previously poorly built Jags that cost tons to repair that only daring souls (like me) buy these things. What can I say, this particular model is simply exceptional - as long as you follow the maintenance schedule! Find a neighborhood mechanic confident enough to work on general repair, and replace all belts, fluids and other aging parts, they are very reasonable if bought from rockauto.com .

This one of those cars you wish later you had bought when you had the chance. I got the chance and have been falling in love ever since. I love how this Jag rides, drives and feels oh so solid. The engine took a little getting used to as it is the last of the straight six 4.0 (USA), and feels (and sounds) like you are starting up a WWII warplane. Once running it is pretty smooth but not buttery and revvy like the V8 that replaced it or the other typical competition. Instead is feels solid and reliable, which it happens to be in spades. If you get a chance to pick up one of these gorgeous cars, you will never want to let it go. With the forward hinged hood, single windshield wiper, J-gate shifter, full-sized spare tire, monstrous battery in the trunk, fuel tank behind the back seat, leather everything, real birdseye maple wood coddling you, and a windshield you can actually reach from your seat, this is a unique car to be certain. UPDATE: My first 10k miles went by quickly, as it is a commuter car for me. Not a single problem encountered. These Jags are made fun of for being less than ideal in the snow, but I put Michelin X-Ice Xi3 tires on her, and managed my way without trouble through 4 inches of snow. The heater is superb and warms quickly, having an auxiliary heating pump, which facilitates quicker defrosts as well. I also love the unique single windshield wiper, which cut that cost in half. UPDATE: Another 10k miles and still no issues at all. I am surprised at the passing acceleration of this 4000 pound car. A new Dodge Challenger SRT8 pulled in front of me from an on ramp and we both "got on it" at the same time. Somehow the Challenger had a hard time pulling away from me, though of course I wasn't going to be able to stay with it too long, the Jag held it's own well up to 100 :-) UPDATE: I now have 175,000 miles on the Jag and still have had no major issues. I just had the windshield replaced from a rock crack, and got a 1998 version with the same green tint plus a blue sunshade tint along the top, a welcome upgrade. I am averaging close to 23 miles to the gallon, 90% being highway miles. It is still driving as well as when I got my Jag at 129,000 miles. The air conditioning is also still ice cold, actually had to turn it up a little higher this summer even at 103 degrees (F of course) outside. The heating/cooling of this car is awesome. UPDATE: The miles just keep coming. Now at 185,500 and STILL no major issues. I have done nothing but change the oil and wash Baby since the last update. It uses very little oil (one additional quart added in last 5k miles), has never needed coolant EVER (tight sealed system apparently), and the power steering reservoir has not leaked since I cleaned it up and tightened the hose connections since the last (and only) fluid change on it about 5k ago. Fabulous car. UPDATE: Another 10,000 miles of trouble free driving, now at 195,777 miles. Have been running Nokian WR G4 tires this time, starting in November 2019. EXCELLENT tires. Truly all-weather, unlike the all-season tires. These have the triple-peak snowflake rating for winter, and are the best all-around tire I have ever driven. UPDATE: "Baby" now has 227,000 miles on her, still all original except wheel bearings and brakes. Still running strong with no issues! She now wears Nokian One tires, which replaced the excellent WR G4. Those Nokians ended up getting 36,000 miles of wear. The One tires are rated 80k , but I expect to get only around 50k tops. Excellent all season tires, especially rain. Snow not so much, but doable and predictable. The only broken item was the power antenna mast, which is typical, and only cost $20 and an hour or so of work to replace. **UPDATE: Sept 22 2022 Baby hit 235,700 miles today, and is STILL running as strong as ever! ZERO failures of any kind to reports since the last update at 227k. The Nokian ONE tires are not holding up as well as advertised, but they are wearing evenly and have given me no troubles. I can feel that they are not so good on rain anymore, and likely not going to be easy through winter, now at 50% tread at only around 10k miles. I can say these will not be purchased again. **UPDATE: 4/6/2023 Baby now has 243,000 miles on her, and going strong! Just did the rear dif fluid, an oil change, and will update the instrument cluster to LED bulbs this weekend. The Nokian One tires are actually doing fine, and after having been through more snow and ice, I believe they are a good tire after all. Treadwear is slowing down and wearing evenly. This Jaguar is still the most reliable car I have had, with no hiccups in the drivetrain or electronics, as older Jags may have had. I would feel comfortable taking it anywhere. Solid piece of engineering. I also find it endearing that the hood sits lower than most modern cars, giving it a more sporting feel, and though the car looks big, it really isn't. UPDATE: With 249,000 miles, the XJ6 just keeps going! The wheel bearings are all in need of replacement, but that's it! Nothing wrong or broken otherwise. There are only a couple instrument lights on the gauge cluster that have burnt out, but they aren't enough to warrant replacing them just yet. Will use LED when I do, which I have a handful ready. UPDATE: Now at 260,000 miles and nothing has changed :-) Replaced the thermostat, a coolant hose and plenum gaskets, water pump and coolant, all myself for less than $150. If you do your own repairs, it is not expensive to maintain at all. Still the best car ever.

This is the second 97 XJ I have owned. My first was totaled in a storm. Love, love, love them. 12 years old and it still gets attention. Completely reliable. I did my research before purchasing. 95-97 were the cream puff years. Bushings and struts and 2 ignition coils had to be replaced last year (100k miles). NOTHING ELSE! I am happy w/ gas mileage (17 city - 23 hwy). Cup holder is useless but that is a small sacrifice. I purchased a dual holder that slides between center console & passenger seat at PepBoys that matches. Chrome wheels are peeling. I had alloys on my previous xj and they were still perfect after 10 years. I will replace wheels and drive this one another few years.

I bought this to replace my 95 XJ6 which I still own for parts. Some minors electrical issues cause a delay in the MD registration process but now that is registered, I am happy. I drove the 95 for years and it is by far the most reliable car I have ever owned. 6 years and only had to replace the water pump one, which I did myself. Bottom line is this, I have now owned 2 of these, they both cost less than 6000$ and they have taken me anywhere I wanted to go on the EAST coast very reliably. AT 145000, I am hoping to keep it for another 10 years at least. The car is heavy as a tank, sturdy as a tank, rather frugal on gas, yet provides the smoothest ride you would find in the category. I have owned Hyundai, Mercedes, Toyotas and VWs, but this is one car done right! Ever indebted to the connoisseur who inducted me into the cult of quality jags.

Going on 2 years now. This is our 4th Jaguar and by far the very best. The ride is superb, luxurious to the extreme. Virtually no wind noise, or noise of ANY kind for that matter. Reliable? You bet! Our experience has been that it costs no more to repair than most other cars. The engine and trans just don't break. It holds it's value great if bought as a previously owned vehicle. It's a head turner and conversation starter wherever we go in it. I'm presently looking for another low mileage '97 XJ6 for my wife.

This has always been my dream car and I finally found the color, year and engine I wanted XJ6L. After plenty of research I read the 95-97 XJ6 was the more trouble free of all Jags and that's what I hunted for and so far so good.

I bought this car on eBay. I've had no problems other than putting tires on (it needed them when I bought it) and changing the oil. Great fuel economy for such a big car. Highway I get ~24 and town is around 15. It is very comfortable to drive and has the power needed when necassary. All in all I love the car (my 3rd Jag) and can't imagine driving anything else.

The most reliable/quality materials Jaguars were built from '95-'97 before Ford messed with engineering. All XJ's are a step up from a Mercedes S, but Vanden Plas makes you feel like a King. It is an elegant, sporty, reliable headturner filled with top of the line leathers and polished wood including gorgeous folding picnic tables in rear. For 15 yrs. just fluid/belt changes needed, and fighting dust on its original 25 yr old stunning exterior. These are cool forever cars. Many last over 250k miles. 107K miles and zero problems with a classic and rare British piece of art.

I recently decided to buy my xjl during a routine checkup for my volvo. The car was being checked out and the people could not afford it. The mechanic just happened to be an ex Jag salesman who told me if I did not buy it, he would. Told me the 95 - 97 xj6 was as reliable as the old 240 volvos, and that is saying something. I have never had so many people ask about my car. The paint is perfect after 10 years and the leather is great. Only issues are the cup holders go bad ($167) and my telescope steering needs replacing. Smooth as silk on new Michelins. Buy it.

Bought the car new in 1997 with the planned to trade it in 3 years, but newer models were essentially the same. No problems beyond normal maintenance. Extremely pleased with overall fit and finish and reliability. Smooth riding with good performance. Want to buy the new '04, but can't find a good reason to spend the money!

Wow, from the amzing performance of the Jaguar historic 250 horsepower flat-6 - which makes the most beautiful engine sound - to the amazing comfort of this luxury car. It all adds up to one of the best Jaguars ever made. Over the corse of 75000 miles I have had to only change one headlight and new brakes. Thats $4500. I purchased this car new for $64,900 back in 1997.

I have been lucky enough to find a '97 XJ6 with 91K miles. The car is magical and I wonder how i drove anything else. The Previous owner was a southern church lady so she was well taken care of and not roughed up. After a clay scrub, wax, leather job, oil change, air filer change and wheel alignment, she looks marvelous and I feel like a baron. The engine is immaculate and performs like the Jaguar she is: POWER. Found a key fob on amazon and all I need are some sweet VDP mats to finish her off.

To began this, I was 17 when my dad gave me his jag in favor for his s500 mercedes. A jag wasnt cool in school so i wanted something different. Nonetheless, a elegant, smooth, and deceptively fast car. I can still hear the deep roar from the engine. Seats had good support, carpet very soft, and the back seat very spacious. Good steering feel and surpisingly not to bad on gas and I always drove in sport mode.

I've owned the car for 2 yrs. For the majority of the time I've thoroughly enjoyed driving this car. Unfortunately, when something stops working (and things inevitably will) it is rarely less than $500 to repair and usually closer to $1000. I understand that all vehicles will have some problems. But not all the time! I love driving it, I hate owning it!

This car turns heads! Deep black and looks absolutely perfect after waxing and polishing. The 246 horse power six cylinder pushes this car down the road with authority. Fun to drive. Not intended for the large or tall person for the driver. Back seat in the this "long version" is huge. Trunk is small.

My wife and I thought so much of our first '97 Jaguar XJ6 that we bought a second one 3 months later. One Antracite Pear, the other Gray. These cars are a world above anything we have ever driven. From Cadillac to Lincoln etc. I highly recomend this model year, perhaps above all other Jaguar model years. Both cars deliver 26-27 mpg on the road and 16-18 in traffic. Problems? Don't expect too much out of the "memory seat".

Was ready to drive off in an Infiniti I-30 when this trade in waltzed in. British understated grace at its pinnacle. The 4.0 litre straight six has got to be the most reliable engine Jag ever made. Have done road trips off several hundred miles with no problems. Driving this car is special. It is reliable, beautiful and I've never had so many people (strangers) come up and ask to have pix taken with the car. My experience with this cat has me looking at getting another to match... XJS convertible maybe... and the wife loves it as well.

I bought my one-owner 1997 XJ6L ten years ago with only 29K miles on it. It now has 34K miles. I've had a few problems with dead batteries, because you can't let this car sit in your garage for a long time without running it; accessories drain the battery quickly. So I've put in a few new batteries and changed the oil every year. This year, I replaced the original Pirelli tires and the alternator belt due to age/dry rot. I also had to get the AC recharged with freon. Please bear in mind, this car is now 27 years old! The radio/cassette player stopped working a few years ago and I got salvage unit installed to replace it. The odometer display in the instrument cluster is also showing problems now, so I guess Ill need to get that fixed, too. Otherwise, this car looks and drives like a dream! It's powerful, fast and comfortable! The beautiful leather seats still look and smell new! I can't take this beauty out for a drive without somebody asking me if I want to sell it! Kelley and Edmunds say this car is only worth about $6k, which is totally nuts! This gorgeous car should easily be worth 5 or 10x that. My big problem now is deciding whether to sell it as a collector's car or keep it as my primary drive!

The Vanden Plas is one great ca r in tip shape, this ca r had 1other owner beside myself and it was 'kept' as I did, only until it was transported out of state to Florida from California did she start looking her 'age', it ran like a jet ride and despite popular opinions~ did NOT require HIGH maintenance, a tune up, new tires, and a paint job (make over) would make it your pride & joy, If you find one and can afford to put it on TOP again...DO IT!
