Incredible Handling car

David Price, 09/02/2010
1993 Honda Prelude VTEC 2dr Coupe

Anyone that thinks this car understeers has got the wrong tires on the car. The handling and cornering feel of this car is hard to match, even by newer cars. Ignore the specified mileage figures, at least for the VTEC. I would get 28-29 mpg cruise and no less than 26 mpg if I really put my foot into it a lot with a fair amount of city driving. The VTEC would start to kick in about 4500 rpm and felt a bit like a turbo. Passing 5 cars will put you over 120 mph in real hurry on the highway. The last time I got to drive this it had 130,000 miles on it and ran like new. It has always run on synthetic (Mobil-1 & Amsoil) engine/gear oil from the 1st oil change at 1000 miles. A drunk driver hit it.

Rethink Your Decision

I had purchased this car in Jan of 2012. It has 193k on the odometer. After being a Honda Mechanic for a few years, I was confident in the vehicle, but had seen very few of these. I had nothing but problems when owning mine. Within a few weeks, my timing belt had broke, and left me stranded. After rebuilding the entire top end of the engine, I drove it for two weeks when the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder went out. Two days after that it was the TPS sensor. After repair almost everything, I thought it was safe to drive, and drove it for 4 hours and it would not start again, which is where I gave up. I suggest going to a VERY well maintained one, or finding another vehicle.

This is a really fun to drive car. It's got good power, when you take off in first and run it up to about 3,000 rpm and just stomp on the gas, the tires break loose and just start spinning. I love it.

When Honda came out with the original prelude, they were determined to make it one of the best performing vehicle they had. And so did they. They put some genuine effort to make the car stand out to build an awesome reputation of a reliable, high performance car. The quality will not repeat itself. It surely one of the best they've ever made. Especially with the style.

Replacement parts questionable quality

This car has been a disappointment due to the inferior quality of replacement electrical system parts... three main relays have failed (replacement approximately $700 each) and three ignition switches failed (replacement approximately $200 each). Honda Prelude replacement electrical parts are garbage IMHO. I will likely never purchase another Honda. However, the best car I ever owned was a 1990 Acura Integra.

I was 15 when i bought my car from some guy down my street for about $3,000, he told me it might need some work on it, but after i did my research on how much it would cost, i was bought within the week, it only cost me about $150 for the parts i needed and the labor was only $85, but after all that, it was ready to hit the streets, its never broken down, it's been the most reliable car if ever seen.

For all of you that have the VTEC prelude, you know that it is way better than any other. performance is better than mustang gt's, and gas mileage is as nearly as good as a civic. does it get any better than this? yes it does. reliablity is just as good as any other honda!

I've gone thought 5 cars in 2 years a toyota pickup, '90 honda accord, 92 toyota paseo, 89 ford tempo, 93 honda prelude. I love this car. its quicker than any I've had. It can hold its own without adding the stuff that will eventually destroy your engine, nos, turbo, supercharger. I love that kids in civics try to play with my car and they get torn up.

Great reliablity, fun as hell to drive, with enough kick to spank most cars out there. Extreamily versitile, I used mine during the winter in the northwest with out any problems, even up on the ski hill. Seats are quality for factory, and the lumber support is nice. So far the car has gone 100 thousand miles with out any big problems at all. Also, living in an area with snow 5 months out of the year, i have not had ANY problems with rust.

The cars body is really a fine peice of work from the inside out, its almost brand new looking from the inside. One problem might be the engine when it comes to dependable, once it breaks down it can be quite a bit of a problem,. other than that handling just like a porsche targa, if you got good 16 or 17`wheels.

Great car, I'm at 180000 on the original everything and it still runs strong with a $4000 kelly blue book value, I only got it for 6K! great on the gas, (but 93 gas only, and if you dont play with it in the vtec too much.) Great on the highway and a fun car to drive. Never really raced it, only to prove a point. (See Fav, Features) Super car for a responsible young adult.

Wow... thats all that really needs to be said. For one, the car is WAY ahead of its time in exterior styling...and I for one, like the interior as well. Now lets talk performance. I paired the already fire-breathing V-TEC engine with Greddy Power Extreme exhaust and AEM cold air intake. Let me tell you..the car dyno's 213 HP and I only spent like $700. The first-gear torque is downright scary. And the sound is amazing...especially when the V-TEC kicks in at 4900. When the V-TEC kicks in you can hear and feel it...which makes it really fun to drive. The car has nearly 150k miles on it and I have had no problems whatsoever!

The 1993 Si VTEC model is the quickest prelude ever produced. It handles like a dream and the VTEC exhaust note is oh- so sweet. The factory Recar seats hold you firmly in place while the OEM 7 speaker stereo plays. This car is for the most part, automotive perfection. To top it all off, its 12 years old and has 106k miles on it. If you're considering this car, just keep in mind that they are very expensive to own and maintain. However this more than pays off in having the pleasure of driving the fastest Honda branded 4cyl coupe ever sold in the US.

Bought my prelude as a used car. The car was 7 years old with 100000 miles. I owned it for 50000 miles had to fix 2 things, the oil pan and the clutch. This car is super fast and handles prefectly. Took it to the tracks pulled a 14.9 1/4mile with no performance parts. The car hangs like a dream, I have drifted going 70 miles an hour was able to keep control no problem. If you find a good deal BUY THIS CAR.

Driver's dream come true

I own a 93 Honda Prelude VTEC, and I absolutely love it! I bought it with 103k miles on it back in 99 and can’t stop redlining it every chance I get since then. The car has 160k and is 14 years old now so few things eventfully give up do to my rough driving habits: clutch, O2 sensor, exhaust flex pipe, hmm… I can’t think of anything more… the button for a hand brake is sticking once a week. Seats are so comfortable that it is hard to stay awake for long drives, but one push on the gas pedal and a sound of the VTEC engaging while you accelerate to 120mph on fairly sharp corner will send your hart rate sky rocking and will put a big smile on your face.

I had a '93 Prelude VTEC 4 years ago. Was hands down, the best car I've had. Acceleration was Excellent (0-60 in about 6.8 seconds), handling and cornering had to be tops in its' class, quality was very high, gas mileage was so-so (but it's not an econo-car anyways), and reliability was fantastic. In my opinion the Prelude is the cream of the crop in the import-sc (sport coupe) class (Eclipse/240 SX/MX- 6/Prelude/Celica). It's aggressive styling still looks great today. Honda needs to bring back a sport coupe soon. The car is popular with thieves here in LA, so garage it if you can.

Love My '93 Prelude Si 4WS

Bought my red 5 speed in June 2005 with 129,000 miles on the clock. I now have 150,000 and I just love this car. I like the punch, the great corner- carving ability and the looks. Each time I walk past the car I just have to smile. I know the 4WS makes the car heavier and therefore slower than the VTEC, but the handling is so great it is worth it. I soon intend to use it as a track day car (while continuing the "daily driver" duties.)

I've owned my '93 Prelude SR for over a year now and what a great car. It packs a lot of punch for a four cylinder and it has incredible handling. I love having a car that I can drive like I stole it every day without any worries. The only problem I've had was the electric ignition igniter crapped out on me which was only a small and cheap repair. Honda should have never stopped making the Prelude!

I've had this car for over 4 years, and I still love it. I bought it with 132K miles, and it now has 185K. The only problems have been a small oil leak and a worn out distributor. The sexy curviness of this car is way better than the ridged design of the 5th gen. Prelude. Criticism aside, I love the "funky" mid-dash display of the interior. The gauges are easier to read than some other cars that clutter the gauges in front of the driver. A few complaints include: the headlight components are a bit cheap, road/wind noise is more than abundant at highway speeds, rear visibility is less than adequate and the speaker covers are a bit flimsy.

23 years of ownership and still going

This is a great little car. I bought it brand new and used synthetic motor oil since day one. After 20+ years of ownership, most original parts are still working. The 4WS computer started failing (about 50% of the time) at about 100K miles. It is safe to drive without that computer though. You just don't get the 4WS feature. I have had it maintained by a reputable Honda specialty shop and have timing belt replaced according to the schedule. The radiator was replaced at 120K and anti-lock brake failed at about 200K. Honda parts are extremely expensive so I opted not to fix anti-lock. The paint is now faded but still is a reliable, peppy, little fun car to drive.

Ever since I learned how to drive , I've been looking for a Honda Prelude. I have a Honda Accord but I fell in love with preludes so when I found a 1993 Honda Prelude for $500 I told my father and he bought it for me. I am Happy with it , I love the Outside and Inside , but what I really love is the Speed and how wonderful it is to Drive it. Everyone says I got it for an Extremely Low Price and been wanting to buy it off me but I will never sell it, lol. Now I own 2 1993 Preludes a Grey one and a white one and I am satisfied.
