Great value for $7100 on 88k mile 2013 Odyssey LX
Became worried about transmission after reading so much negative problems, so have babied it. Have changed and flushed at least 5 or 6 times, and have changed transmission filter(although they say it is lifetime, it may be, and it came out with zero shavings at 130k miles). 1st thing I did was full tune up including timing belt, spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, transmission fluids, etc.....all of it)...cost me about 1000, but have a basically new van for 8100. Changed brake and steering fluids at 125k. New tires at 140k. Oil changes every 5 to 7500 miles, and am switching to full synthetic at 149k). Had to recharge air at 115k with leak test in 2014.....has worked perfectly since and is pretty good considering it went 10 years to my knowledge, and this includes through (Nevada/Utah/Cal's Inland Valley's/Death Valley). Only surprise was a slow leak in power steering at 125k.....fixed and no problem since. I now have 149k miles....so 60k miles in just under 4 years....and really no major problems.....just regular maintenance, but I have changed everything that most people overlook like changing brake and steering fluids. Sometimes if I drive conservatively I can get 27 mpg, but I normally drive about 80-82 mph and get 22 to 23 mpg.....which I consider pretty good. I have a roof rack I will remove and I am sure I will improve another 1 mpg. Really, I cant be happier considering. Hope to get another 4 years out of this, and if I do.....I will be a new one if they can improve the mpg on them. Transmission has been fine on this, but I read that they improved on this after 2002....they apparently had real issues with this and started some pre purchase transmission extras to help, and apparently it worked. This handles extremely well for a van, and has great acceleration for a 14 year old van. Some rust underneath. Oh, I did have to have pipes redone due to rust......I think this is normal after 13 years....did it last year. Seems ready to roll another 100k......so lets hope....that should get me at least 5 years as I drive across country at least twice a year. Safety ratings are very good so feel good about wife or kids driving. Have added dash cam that has back up camera and lane deviation and crash alert......a very nice addition for those with larger family vehicles.

what honda won't tell you
tranny, radio, engine mounts , sliding doors , rear vent windows , battery cables are the cause of many problems with this van in my opinion ,change at least the positive side . Now the big problem the tranny in 2004 mid year (April I believe) is when you have a chance to have your tranny last . 1 do a total drain on tranny fluid ( you tube ) while running van . 2 change tranny filter , yes you need to look up on Honda parts drawings , there is a filter ! 3 you need to install a tranny cooler a second tranny inline filter( magna filter ) all the rest you can also find on you tube . You must have some knowledge about car repairs .Also do all your yearly maintenance on time ( timing belt

230K and no major problems
Bought the Van new. We drove it a lot. Never had any major problems. We lost it when it was totaled in an accident. We miss it. We used Mobil 1 and changed the oil about every 5,000 miles. Changed the timing belt at 110K. Changed the brake pads myself and never had to replace rotors. The only thing not working when it was totaled was the clock light, rear windows and temperature control. Otherwise great van. I would by another 2004 but we are out of the kid mode.
Transmission --> Honda odyssey = Junk
We are Honda family with a Accord and a Odyssey. I have only but heart burn with Odyssey With only 80K miles on it - I was told my transmission is junk and I have to shell out $5k more to get it fixed. This is the last straw. I had to replace the door system, ac and you name it. Per my San Jose Honda dealer, this is extremely common in Honda odyssey - i.e transmission and other issues. The dealer replaces an average of 5 transmissions a week for Odysseys between 1999-2007. So for those Odyssey owners - watch for any sluggishness in the performance. I am not coming to Honda again.
Electronically Junkie!
I bought my van new. We replaced the engine mounts not too long after the warranty expired. The rear windows electronics shortly died thereafter. We paid to get it painted hoping to stretch a couple more years out of it (it only had 95K miles on it at this point). Then our transmission went out! Another $4500 down the tube. So, we are trying to recoup some money by hanging on to it, but recently (133K miles now) our rear doors have started going out, and I hear a clunking noise occassionally. Looking at the Murano or possibly CRV--almost scared to buy another Honda though!
