In a Rollover accident with my HRV

THIS CAR SAVED MY FAMILIES LIVES!!!!! On 10/10/15 I was t-boned by a Toyota Tundra. I had 3 children in the back seat, ages 10, 8 and 7. The 8 year old boy was my neighbor. We were on our way to a pumpkin patch. The Tundra hit my passengers side door bending the frame of the car. My 7 yr old daughter was sitting behind the passengers seat. She's alive and ok! The impact was so hard it took the passengers side wheels off the ground. Just riding on 2 wheels, we ran off the road into a ditch, coming up and out of the ditch the car rolled over on the drivers side then landed on the roof. When it stopped the rear of the car was completely off the ground. The hood and windshield was not visible from outside. It was all on the ground. Every airbag deployed and everything this car was designed to do, it did! We were all able to crawl out of the vehicle and walk to the ambulance, walk into the hospital and walk out of the hospital. None of us had head injuries, major neck injuries or broken bones. We were able walk away with just some bruises and soreness. I was asked by paramedics, police, nurses and doctors over and over and over again "What kind of car were you driving?". Prior to the accident, I was in love with this car!!! I plan on buying another one as soon as I get the check from the insurance company! My kids are alive after a horrific accident. What more could you need or want in a car???

I have had my HRV - EXL for a week now and I absolutely love it. After reading reviews and articles about the HRV for over six months, I finally found a Black EXL for sale and purchased it. Buying a car is a very personal thing, but here is my experience with my HRV so far. I was looking for a car with good gas mileage and lots of storage, as I am a musician and gig out quite a bit. The HRV had more space than any other car in its class, and if you test drive it and compare it to other cars, this quickly becomes apparent. It also means the back seat ride is way more comfortable for passengers than the Nissan Juke or Mazda 3, which might matter if you have kids. Acceleration. Every review seems to mention its poor acceleration. My experience is its not bad. This is not a race car, so I didn't have the expectation that it would drive like one. Around town you have plenty of power, and even merging on the highway you have all you need. Don't worry about this. If Honda wanted to give it a few more horses I wouldn't complain, but had reviews not mentioned acceleration I wouldn't have thought twice about it when test driving it. The overall handling of the car I think is amazing, especially for its price tag. It responds well to turning and it's turning radius is very good. Personally, I enjoy that it drives more like a car than an SUV. I find the car extremely comfortable to sit in and drive. Full disclosure I am not a big person. 5'8" and average build, I weigh 148lbs. I think if you were 6' tall this car might start getting snug, but so would most cars in this class. You might just want to look at the CRV. Another area that the HRV seems to get complaints is in the touch control climate/entertainment console. When I first got the car, it did bother me a bit. Not knowing where everything was meant looking down and trying to figure it all out. However, after a week with it, using the touchscreen climate and radio controls becomes second nature and I enjoy the tech look of it. Admittedly I am a technophile. Reading other reviews, it seems many of those purchasing this car might have been older, so figuring this all out might have been more of a nuisance for them. I have two minor complaints though. First, you can't use apple CarPlay with the this car, which lets you use Apple maps for navigation instead of Hondas Nav. It's not that big a deal because I can Bluetooth my phone and have my phone give me directions still. But it would be nice to mirror it on the big Honda display. Honda nav is sufficient, but not great. Truth be told though, I did not buy the EXl for the Navigation. I bought it for the leather seats, and let me tell you that in my opinion it was worth every penny. The interior EXL just feels high class, and looks it too. I have a feeling it will withstand the test of time much better, and is much easier to clean than the fabric. I also find the firmer leather seats to be more comfortable than the fabric seats. Since I wil be road tripping in this car a lot that is very important. So far I have been averaging 32mpg under mixed highway/city driving. Personally I have grown to really like the lane watch camera. It is very helpful in changing lanes in high traffic atlanta, and you can turn it on even if your turn signal isn't on, which can be helpful during high traffic times. A small feature that I personally love is the brake hold. Turn it on and when the car stops you don't have to keep your foot on the break. This is also amazing in rush hour traffic and in some other instances. All in all I truly love this car. As I drive it more I will update this review, but Honda hit a home run in my opinion. I've had a 2002 Civix EX, a 2006 Element EX, a Nissan 350z Convertible, and so far this is my favors car overall, hands down. If you can afford it upgrade to the leather, it's so worth it. Even fully loaded it's not an expensive car. I look forward to getting up and driving this car every day. I can't wait to go on some camping / road trip adventures in this wonderful car.

Never thought I would consider a brand new car...

Let me start by saying I thought I would never ever own a brand new car. Not because I can't afford it, I just didn't see the value...until Honda released this wonderful gem. I thought it was time for an automatic, and like a few others I was drawn to the design, cargo space and ride of the Mazda CX-5. But I wasn't sure I needed slightly extra height/width and engine power, and I also owned a civic for years so I was drawn to Honda's reliability and headache free maintenance. I do try to hypermile when I can, so when I saw the HRV had a manual it became a reasonable contender. I test drove it, and it shifted like warm butter (that's a good thing). So I started analyzing all other differences between these cars and I decided the Honda had nothing more and nothing less than exactly what I need in an SUV. Both my cars now fit in the garage nicely with plenty of room and I will never have to worry about finding a big enough parking spot. On top of all that the MPG could almost be overlooked, but is definitely a nice bonus that reminds me I made a good choice. If you're coming from a higher/wider vehicle into the HRV you will probably feel cramped at first, but strangely with the cargo versatility (Seats that fold completely flat and magic seats) it feels like the same size as a larger size SUV. Comfort for me was fine, I'm not doing cross country trips and if I did it would be in a rental. My wife and I tested that we can both lay down in the back comfortably (5'9" and shorter), which will come in handy... we're taking it to the drive-in this weekend :) There's not much I don't like, but I'll reserve judgment on the thin cloth on the door uppers. I am concerned about it's durability, as I like to put my elbow there when I drive. Other than that, I really wish the call button on the steering wheel triggered Siri like the EX model, but the LX model had almost everything I needed so couldn't justify the upgrade.

I finally ended up with this car after going back and forth between the Subaru Crosstrek and Honda CR-V. Keep in mind this is a $19k (starting) car based off of the Fit. Interior quality is OK. Looks nice but lots of hard plastic, fabric doors on LX/EX trims (picks up dirt very easily), every panel flexes when you push it. Ergonomics are a bit weird: armrests are low and short and essentially useless. Seat bottoms are a bit short and there's no adjustable lumbar. Because the gas tank is under the front seats, it limits the adjustability. Passenger gets no height adjustment. However, there is plenty of space for passengers - check out the rear legroom! Gauges are nice, screen is easy to see in most conditions, the touchscreen HVAC is not my favorite - hard to use while driving - but looks nice and is responsive. I love the lighted vanity mirrors and the ability to slide them to block more of the sun. A/C and heat are fine. A/C will suffer in ECO mode for those in very hot climates. Seat warmers could be a bit hotter (I got used to the ON FIRE levels of German cars haha) but overall are fine. Tech is good enough. Spotify is not supported (only Pandora), so sometimes the song info doesn't show up from my iPhone. Audio quality in general is okay - typical Honda (mediocre). Bluetooth is easy to set up and sound quality is very clear! Everything is easy to use and I experience very few glitches. I love the backup camera and lanewatch is a must have! One MAJOR problem I have is with the safety ratings: check out the IIHS side impact test. Not sure what Honda was doing/thinking there... NVH is a bit poor IMO. The car is very rough over bumps and road imperfections. Noise levels are okay in the city but on the fwy at high speeds the wind noise is a bit much. Nothing crazy but Honda could do a little better. This car is AMAZING in the city. It's small, easy to park, maneuverable, gets good MPG, is peppy and handles well. I use it for Home Depot, IKEA, etc. trips and it has had the space for everything and then some. Magic seats are Honda at it's best - I was able to shove a 55" TV (in the box) behind the front seats with the magic seats up! MPG is great!!! Driving conservatively on the hwy - 65mph - will get you about 40mpg. CVT is very relaxing, no lurching or shifting like traditional autos. I do not hear any "buzz" from the engine. Aggressive drivers will need to plan ahead if coming from a faster car - the HR-V is not "slow" in general driving but this is not a Ferrari or even a BMW. Can't be making split-second lane changes etc. Overall, if you understand the limitations this car is a good little CUV. Perfect for first-time drivers, older drivers, or those looking for more hauling capabilities in cramped cities. For ~$22k (EX CVT trim) it's a great package.

Interior flexibility worth the price of admission

My last car was a 2013 Subaru Impreza hatchback. I wanted a small AWD vehicle, decent mileage, with ample interior room to carry assorted riding (equine) equipment. The CR-V, RAV-4, Ford Escape were all in the running, but I didn't have any use for a car of that size. Off road was not a consideration. The reason I didn't want another Subaru was the excessive road noise. The Honda HR-V is almost perfect. The back seats fold completely flat. The seat cushions also fold up which adds enormous flexibility. The ride is very comfortable - softer than my Subaru. I drive a lot on country roads. I have been getting 26 mpg, a bit disappointing. Road noise is significantly less than my Subaru, but still a bit loud on cement freeways. However, I can still hear radio and phone conversations, which I couldn't do on my last car. One telling sign of excessive road noise is if Siri or the Honda voice recognition can hear me on those cement freeways and in that regard, the Honda flunks the test. Regarding comfort, I love the heated seats. The phone/navigation/sound controls are easy enough for a screen based system, but require that i remove my eyes from the road. The sound system is a definite step up from my Subaru. I would call it respectable. I am so short, I always need to sit on a cushion regardless of the seat controls. However, I like that the Honda seat is more flat in its raised position than most cars. The push-button start is nice. Handling is decent. I find the right turn camera very helpful. Some reviewers said it was unnecessary and distracting. You get used to it pretty quickly and learn to use it. I haven't used it in the dark, but during daylight hours, it works great for lane changes and turns. My car came with all weather mats, a necessity for me. There is no real carpeting underneath the mats - it's a felt - the kind you might find in your trunk. That's not easy to clean, so I'm glad I have the mats. My car did not come with a trunk cover and I don't see a place to attach one. Not sure if one is available. My dealer does all maintenance for two years, which is great for my three-year lease. Some reviewers mentioned rattles - none on my car. So far, I am very happy with my purchase. I drove it during a very harsh winter and it handled well in the snow and rain.

Pros: Gas mileage. I get 27 in town and up to 36 on the highway in the AWD EX Space/cargo area (my brother and my self are just over 6 feet tall and plenty of room for legs and head in rear) Good visibility Engine very quiet. ***A lot of people are saying that this engine has no power. Coming from driving many v8's over the years and still have a v8 camaro, this engine does just fine with power. If your expecting a rocket ship however, this car is not for you. Cons : USB Port and rear drivers seat rattle. Going over bumps the rear drivers seat rattles, might be from the flexibility of the seat. Will have it checked at dealership sometime soon. No automatic hatch lift. Back up camera is not really to scale and easy to back into something. Better off using the old fashioned way of turning around to check your surroundings I would recommend to a friend though..good overall car for what you pay

Have had my HRV back to the dealer twice during my first two months of ownership. Check engine light and parking brake light came on and wouldn't go off until a few days passed, then the cycle returned. First time they replaced no.2 O2 sensor, problem returned. This time, wiring harness and starter motor replaced- fingers crossed. The issue has been resolved! It was in the wiring harness behind the dash. Just a connector clip that was defective. Glad it was all under warranty..

I was looking for another Crossover that was manual since my Nissan Juke can't hold an adult around my height in the back seat. Plus I wanted a Crossover that got as good if not better gas mileage then my Nissan. Looked at the CX-5 but just wasn't feeling it in the manual 6 speed so I went with the HRV Ex. I got plenty of room for the family now and the luggage . Been gettin great gas mileage so far 34 avg and love the ac system no one complains it's not cold in the car...lol

I wanted the sporty feel and fuel economy of a hatchback. I needed the AWD and reliablity for New England winters. The HRV filed the segment I was looking at very well. I have always liked the reliability and style of Honda and Acura. I looker at the Madza CX-3 and CX-5. They were sportier but cost of ownership and reliabilty was higher. The CX-3 interior was too small and unfinished for my taste. The CX-5 was more than I wanted to spend. The very happy medium was the HRV. The safety and AWD of the CRV and sportiness of the Civic.

Wife had her eyes on the Honda CRV and the idling vibration problem reviews caused us to wait a few months to see if HRV appealed to her. HRV was Love at first sight,Marry at first drive. 1200 miles later here's our take. First the primary less than perfect thing. I'm an impatient driver and like to quickly zip around people (wife is not). The engine is not great for doing that but great for doing almost everything else you could want (and get's awesome MPG for us). Putting it in sport mode, using the super simple manual clicks to switch gears, is a lot of fun and any of you impatient drivers should test drive in sport mode before you draw conclusions on zip. MPG rocks though!

Hi, the new Honda HRV is a great value, for a little under 20k, you just can't expect more. My girlfriend has a 2015 Subaru Forester, it has more comfortable seats, it's quieter, it has more acceleration, the all around quality is better, it's a $32k vehicle and it shows. We'll take that on the longer road trips, but the Honda H-RV is a lot of bang for the buck, a great commuter vehicle, which is what I use it for. The 1.8L 4 cylinder engine is very smooth and delivers plenty of power, and 37 mpg on the road. I bought a 2001 Honda CRV for about the same price the 2016 HRV goes for, and 15 yrs later, the H-RV is a better vehicle than the 2001 CRV was. I just gave the 2001 Honda CRV to my son who is in college, 208k miles and runs like a top. If you want a great ride, buy a more exp vehicle, but the HRV is a very good vehicle. To borrow a line - It's great for what it is. I'm still very happy with the HRV now that it's April, 2019 now that I have put over 34,000 miles on it. This is a great all around vehicle with a lot of space with the rear seats down to haul a lot of things or a fairly big piece of furniture, ect. Plenty of power on the road, just drove to Arizona and back last month, held the road well in a snowstorm in NM, glad I put new tires on it before this trip.

I had been on the hunt for a new car for several months (luckily my previous Escape had been running great so I had time to shop!). Moving from an SUV, I wanted something a little more fun to drive, with better fuel efficiency, but without sacrificing too much space. I had narrowed down my search to the Corolla, the Hyundai Elantra GT, and the HR-V (Yes, 3 very different cars, I know). After endless pros and cons lists, multiple test drives, reading every review on the web, and making myself insane meeting many different car salesmen, I finally opted for the higher investment with the HR-V. As soon as I made the decision I felt relief. Now having had the car for about a week, I have already packed it full for an art show and have a road trip schedule. This car is fantastic! A little sluggish on the pickup, the sport mode gives it a little more "oomph" to improve the driving experience. I really enjoy using the paddle shifters as well. The road noise is very quiet when in drive mode, but when in Sport mode, the CVT shifts a bit higher and is definitely a little louder, but still far quieter than my Escape was. I opted for the EX, as this option adds a moonroof, heated seats, and side view camera (when turning right) and only added about $2000 to the price. One thing I have noticed that I'm not the fondest of, is the extreme lumbar support in the drivers seat. I think that, due to my small stature, this will take some getting used to. I also wish Honda offered a powered drivers seat option for the EX model (I don't think they even offer it for the EX-L either). In a nut shell, if your looking for something that drives like a car, gets great gas mileage, and has the capacity of a small SUV and will last you forever, this is the car!

Defect

Love this car, very satisfying all the way around. I'm older, in Michigan; I love how it goes in the snow and how much more practical it is, and easier to get in and out of, than my sedan. Big defect though going over tarstrips and bumps while braking sometimes--a kick back, knock, clunk . . . not so much a noise as a feeling in the pedal like dropping a tray of tools, kind of mechanical take-up or loose assembly coming under tension (hard to describe). Took it in right after new and they found nothing; clunking persisted; wrote Honda in case there was a known problem; they said take it back to shop; shop couldn't find anything; wrote to Honda to report shop couldn't fix and said I'd monitor it for six weeks and report; no reply; six weeks are about up and have had many significant occurrences; will report to Honda. What will they do? They say three times they can't fix it, it's lemon. Do they take my word for it? Will they have an engineer keep it a while? Do they have some way to resolve this defective mechanical problem? The car is a joy but dealing with this complication sure has taken a lot of joy out of ownership of a brand new car. UPDATE: I worked closely with Honda America but they explained a Catch-22 of HRV ownership: They do not diagnose defects that their computer program doesn't recognize. Thus defects such as the brake kick back problem found in many HRVs are acknowledged as existing but not addressed or covered, and owners simply "got a bad one." Honda urges owners of such defective HRV's to keep an eye open for recalls--indicating they have developed repair protocols.

I wanted to drive my HR for a while before I wrote a review. Let's start with my needs. To begin with, the last time I bought a car was 1998 so things have changed a lot - USB ports, backup cameras, push button start, heated seats. I love it all. I was looking for a car that would fit in my garage so it had to be less than 175 inches long. I wanted AWD because I will be moving to Denver in a few years when I retire. I also wanted cargo space for trips to Home Depot. I wanted leather seats. They last longer and it's easier to get in & out of the car. I promised my son I would get 4 doors this time because it was difficult to get my grandson's car seat in and out of my old car. The HR met all my needs and then some. The only problem I had was with the driver's seat. I'm short and my specific back issue needs the seat straight up, not tilted back. That caused the headrest to tilt too far forward. I took the head rest completely off, but that didn't give my neck any support. I finally put the headrest back on, but backwards. Now it's perfect. (short people problems!) Sometimes I think this car is so automatic, I could take a nap on my way to work. The headlights are set to automatic, the temperature is set to stay the same all year round. The audio plays my MP3 player, and my Android phone is synced up. In short I'm very satisfied with my choice. It truly is 21st century luxury.

I've rode it for over a 1k miles and I can confirm it's truly the best City SUV out there. Naturally, if you live in the country or Iowa you probably should look elsewhere. Pros: -Looks great -Small turning range -Honda Lane Change (Life Saver) -Honda Back-up camera (Life Saver) -Ample cargo space -Ample Front Row seating (I'm a 5' 11" big guy and I'm very comfortable in the driver seat) -Bluetooth -Touchpad Climate Control (Some stupid old school Auto Critic argued they missed the knobs. The thing to remember is the old-school Critics are the Knobs. Apparently, they never used a Touchpad or Smart Phone.) -Great Gas mileage (35 mpg on the highway as promised) -Sunroof Cons: -Honda's Android apps are useless (Don't expect Honda to ever upgrade them to being useful.) -Garmin's Navigation that Honda uses (Honda give it up and just install Android Auto in every Honda so we can all use Google Maps or Wave.) -This is nit-picky but the front windshield wipers are both on the drivers side. The Passenger wipers uses an exceptionally long arm to wipe the windshield. Which when it's not running during a rainstorm and you're speeding down the highway it shakes. Annoying. -Windows could be a bit thicker to keep out the road noise.

Most journalists commented on how the engine is rough and noisy. Drive a CX3 and you will discover just how refined Honda's R18 is in comparison. Also, the HRV is not "slow". It has plenty of real world acceleration and passing power even at highway speed. You have to keep in perspective the class of vehicle you are buying. It is not designed to be a sports car. I traded my 2014 Civic Si with 200+hp for the HRV and I find it very entertaining to drive when you call on it. The HRV handles great and feels "tossable". In comparison, the CX3 which is know for its steering, really is not all that much better. Honda's interior packaging is brilliant and the magic seats really set this vehicle apart from the competition. Interior cargo volume is enormous. Fit and finish is excellent inside and out and the doors have some heft that exudes a sense of solidity. Something the CX3 does not have. This is another winner for Honda as indicated by little inventory the dealers can keep on their lots. Most are pre-sold.

A Great Trade from a Sedan to a SUV

I purchased my HRV EX-L a month ago. I knew it did not have power seats with lumbar support which I really think is a mistake that Honda made as well as the short length of the telescopic steering wheel. Aside from that I love the handling and lane watch features. There are many features that are attractive like great speakers, climate control, mirrors with blinkers" the leather seats are classy and well made but not as comfortable due to lack of adjustments with power seats. I have owned a 1988 Honda Prelude and 2004 Acura TL which were my favorite and most fun cars to drive surpassing my Lexus. I've now had my HRV for over a year. I love it As a NYC Resident on street parking is great. This not so little compact SUV fits into the smallest parking spots. Using Tier 1 gasoline as recommended by Honda definitely helps acceleration. Love almost everything about this car but I miss my power seats😥😥😥 Honda needs to add power driver seats, lengthen the steering wheel stem and add two inches of leg room in the front. I am 5'7" 150 Lbs but all legs and arms so a little more leg room which be perfect. As far as back pain, I bought a pillow which seems to help. I have had to adjust to all of my cars and I will have to do the same for this. It is a perfect for a single or couple with small children. I recommend the HRV with the above changes to rate it an overall 5

Bang for the buck with Honda reliability

Jim T, 01/24/2016
2016 Honda HR-V EX 4dr SUV AWD (1.8L 4cyl CVT)

I needed a vehicle with smart packaging, hatchback utility, reasonable fuel economy, and upmost reliability. I work as an automotive instructor and consultant, having experienced the "ins and outs" of the major car companies, it didn't take me long to narrow down my choices to Honda, Mazda, and Toyota. I would have considered Acura and Lexus, yet the price jump for the premium brand is just not justifiable versus the features offered in the parent brands. The new HR-V is by no means perfect, yet there are so many great traits in this little Honda which make you forget about the minor flaws. For comparison, I came from an Accord Sport with the 6 speed manual- no race car- but still a reasonably quick car. I see many voice concerns about the HR-V as being slow (my salesman included), I have found the HR-V is by no means slow, it can get into it traffic and handle hills with ease. The CVT will manage engine rpm to keep efficiency and speed up to par. It should be noted that I typically leave the "ECO MODE" on and leave the transmission in "drive" versus "sport" mode- which greatly enhances throttle response. The AWD is a must for where we live deep in the hills of Massachusetts, I actually purchased Blizzak snow tires, making a proper snow handling evaluation impossible. In my professional opinion, the factory Michelin tires do not appear to be ideal for heavy snow conditions. I drive north to the mountains for snowboarding, making use of my snow tires. The interior of the HR-V is what makes it so special, the magic seat and hatchback combination are amazing and must be experienced to appreciate. There are so many combinations! We can carry the dogs, siblings or grandparents, and gear with ease. The heated cloth seats are holding up well and I was surprised to find that the passenger seat even has seat-back heating. The seat position takes some getting used to; the gas tank is located beneath the front seats under the car, making for a raised platform under the seats. The only interior complaint for me (being 5'11" guy who wears logging boots) is that the drivers dead-pedal is awkwardly close to the drivers seat, I like to stretch my legs out in a car.

The only real issue I have had is the center console lid spring broke twice and Fischer Honda ordered an entire assembly replacement and so far so good. Other than that, the HRV rides great; handles good and has been reliable with no real issues. I have a little over 18000 miles on the car and it still running fine for me. I would definitely remcommend Honda weather built in Mexico or Japan or even the U.S.

We LOVE our new HRV! This is truly one of the most favorite cars we have ever had, and it is the most fun to drive. I have a pair of Bose headphones that I listen to a lot, but the HD radio in the HRV sounds even better than Bose headphones, which is hard to believe. I am 6'3 and have plenty of room in the front and even in the back seat with the front seats all the way back - unbelievable. The fuel economy is great and we have found the 1.8L engine to be adequate for everything we need - glad to have that engine since it is "tried and true" and has been around so long. Great value and investment!

I just drove our new HR-V 400 miles on the Interstate. It has plenty of technology, a peppy engine, that cool Honda Magic interior and it looks sharp. The CVT takes getting used to as I have never owned one before. I would punch it and it would respond well but it just felt different. I got 31 MPG on the highway but the HR-V is brand new and I tend to drive fast. It handled the highway well even during the thunderstorms I encountered on my trip. So initially, it feels solid, well-built and capable. We'll see how I feel 10,000 miles from now.

This car is perfect for a single active person or a couple with only one child. The front seats are great. An adult man can sit comfortably in the driver or passengers seat. The back seat is designed well so a tall item can sit upright with the removal of it. A huge plus for moving storage boxes, plants, or Great Dane. The gas mileage is superb close to 28-32 in the city.

Function and form over performance

I was focusing most on function in my next vehicle, and since I do a lot of highway traveling, this car is basically ideal if you want any significant cargo capacity without sacrificing MPG. Looks good as well. Pros: 1) Amazing gas mileage. My actual mpg is significantly better than even EPA. Average 33.5 so far, but get 36 plus on highway at 70 mph 2) Interior is well done and cargo capacity for a vehicle this size is excellent. Recent emergency required loading of commerical dehumidifier, 4 carpet blowers and large wet dry vac and everything fit fine. 3) CVT is better than I expected and I don't have any droning issues unless under full acceleration 4) Handling is better than my 2010 Rav4, but not to CX-5 levels (but close). 5) Back seat legroom is fantastic given the size of this vehicle. Only real sacrifice you give up in space is the width of the seats. 6) Radio and bluetooth work great Cons: 1) Road noise - While wind noise is minimized, there is a shortage of dampening material. Rough roads and rain come through fairly loud for a honda, but its not to the level of annoyance. 2) Merely adequate acceleration. While it doesn't impact or bother me, if you are looking for great acceleration or easy highway passing, this probably isn't the car for you. MPG advantage, in my opinion, more than makes up for it. I understand the EX-L with paddles improves this though (I have the base LX version) 3) Material quality - compared to older vehicles, the quality of the cloth for seats and carpeting material are less. However, on par with other cars and compact SUV's in this price point. Thin so potential wear problems. Need to invest in mats, car seat covers and trunk liner to preserve them. 4) Inability to add a hitch at this point.

I'm still happy with my HR-V because of the economics, not a gas guzzler. The acceleration is fine under normal situations. However, when at a complete stop, if I accelerate quickly, it doesn't respond well or when merging onto the highway...if I press on the gas pedal heavily, it won't move out as quick as I want, but these are rare situations and now I know what to expect. The interior is quite roomy, seats are comfortable, but manual. There's plenty of leg room, rear seats can fold down or lifted up for traveling with bulky cargo. I live in an region where winters are rough on cars. In traffic, I had to brake quickly and the car just slid. I was in an area where salt trucks aren't out as often as where I live or maybe they couldn't keep up with the continuously falling snow. I like listening to music on the radio, unfortunately my car doesn't indicate the names of songs/artists automatically. The manual was not helpful on this subject. The Honda HR-V is reliable, still kind of new so its expected.

I have a new 2016HRV. I bought it 1 month ago in Arizona and drove it to New York. At least a dozen times the navigation system gave me wrong readings and showed me wrong maps/exits at highway interchanges. Once thru the interchange the system would show the correct directions. On arrival to NY I went to a local Honda dealer. After their 10 mile test drive they determined the navigation system is working fine and they will do nothing to find out why it acted upon on my 2300 mile trip. I called the 1 800 number in the manual got a reference number and after a few days Honda Corporate also stated they will not fix the problem. I am stuck with a brand new HR-V with a navigation system Honda refuses to try to fix. I will not buy another Honda if they will not back up their product.

Base model with 6-speed manual

We wanted a car that we could tow behind our RV. That said we chose the HR-V with the manual transmission over the CTV automatic. From a re-sale stand point this may not be a good choice....But I am having too much fun driving this car to care! The gearbox is easy to shift even though I have never had a "6-speed". When in traffic I sometimes skip a gear, like go from first to third to fifth and sixth. The engine has good torque down low so as long as you are not giving it a lot of gas it doesn't care. The cornering ability is great too. It corners like it's on rails. I told you I was having fun with this car. On top of all that it's getting over 31 MPG in combined city / highway driving. The other thing that amazed me was the interior space. It is tight without being cramped. I am 6'-1" and 275 pounds so getting in and out of some cars can be difficult for my 70+ year old bones. However I can easily get in the front or back seat and have plenty of head room. The EX and EX-L models have a sunroof which takes away some headroom so I opted for the LX model. It is easier to get in and out of than the Honda Odessey I traded in. The cargo space is very good for a car this size and with the rear seats folded flat it's even bigger. From the outside it looks more like a sport coupe than a 4-door SUV/Crossover. Most people don't realize it is a four door because the rear door latch is semi-hidden in the C pillar. All in all I really like this car!

Great Family Car for the price

I am very pleased with the Honda HR-V. My gf and I bought ours in June of 2015. we're now in December and we have 13k miles. The Hrv is hers of course, but i wouldnt mind driving it everyday myself. The seats are more comfortable than the Mercedes Benz she had (a 2007 c230 Sport) even though we got the LX i am happy with the features that come with it. The Bluetooth works great, the microphone sounds ok on the other end. We don't have kids but it comes in handy when we need to bring our families around. I will say the back seat is a little too bumpy of a ride. it feels like the shocks are a little too stiff. But the front cabin is great. Cabin noise is very low and the stereo is good. This is the first car with CVT that we've experienced and it takes time to get used to. The shift points are unnoticeable and its noisy when you step on it for getting up on the highway. It is by no means a race car or fast. It shares the engine with a Civic non-SI so, maintenance will never be a problem since i used to own a 2008 civic with the same engine. My old civic had 113k miles and it had no problems and i had it slammed on the floor with no issues. We're averaging 30.0mpg and we have made a game with the color ring on the gauge cluster to see if we can keep the ring dark green. I like the fact that its smaller and more stylish on the exterior than the CRV and we don't regret buying an HRV, we just regret not waiting for an EX to become available. I would give this car a 5 star. Bigger than a fit smaller than a CRV with the engine of a Civic. Excellent value for the price

HRV EXL Navi - Dark Gray - 2WD

Overall impression of the car is very good. Typical Honda excellent engineering with the 2nd row seat design. Amazing cargo flexibility that is unmatched in anything in its class. Overall road noise is slightly higher than what I am used to, but not objectionable. Cross shopped the Mazda CX3 and HRV is way superior in almost every aspect. I do not like CVT transmissions in general, but Honda has made this CVT the best I have driven. Coming out of a VW GTI, I am missing the 70+ HP and the manual transmission, but am enjoying the increased fuel economy and cargo flexibility. HRV is the perfect size vehicle for my commuting and occasional car pooling needs. The CRV has grown too much over the last 2 redesigns, the HRV is about the same size as the first generation CRV but with way better use of interior space. The 1.8L engine is a carryover from the 2006 Civic and although not a technology masterpiece, it has been proven rock solid and reliable. I will probably keep this car for 10 years and put 200K on it with little more than basic maintenance. Only real dislike about the car is the choice in carpet. It is not a woven pile carpet but rather a black polyester weave, it looks and feels very cheap. Looks more like a sound deadener found in the trunk surrounding the spare wheel than a carpet covering the entire interior of the car. I will be getting the weathertech floor liners to cover almost all of the interior to cover this up. Update: After 8K miles, did first oil change (indicator was @ 40%), used Mobil 1 Synthetic instead of break in oil, mpg increased slightly. Navi System voice control is a total joke. Navi Maps are at least 5 years out of date and almost totally useless, why can't Honda use Garmin? Red rust is appearing on the MIG welds on the seams of the muffler. I think they used the incorrect weld wire to weld stainless. Update: Now at 22K miles. MPG has stabilized at 34-35 mpg. No mechanical issues at all. XM radio reception is worst I have ever had, will cut out if there is a cloud in the sky, never had this issue on any other car. Overall it is a great little car which serves its purpose well. Update: Now at 30K - no mechanical problems at all, runs like a top. Fuel economy drops 1-2 mpg in winter time, gains it back in summer. Overall a good car with no regrets in buying. Update: Now at 46K - still no mechanical issues, runs like a top. Original Michelin tires still have half life left. Only negative so far, it has gathered lots of stone chips / door dings / etc. Thin paint combined with thin base / clear coat does not offer much protection from the craziness of roads or parking lots. No regrets. Update: 56K miles - no mechanical issues. Tires were replaced with same Michelins from factory, probably could have gotten another 15K from them, but were 6 years old. Gave car to daughter to take to university. Flexible cargo system made hauling dorm things a breeze. Only issue is the black trim is starting to fade (bumpers / fender trims) Update @ 70K - no mechanical issues. Had the dealer do the recall on the starter button, changed the fluid in the CVT myself. Passenger side sunroof drain hose became clogged which resulted in water overflowing into interior. (very bad design with only a 3/16" diameter inlet to hose) All of the black trim has faded to grey and car is beginning to show its age. Overall a very good little car, perfect for its intended purpose.

still very happy after 10 with my car i don't need anything super fast, enjoy the comfort, visibility and safety features, fuel economy is very good minor annoyances are center console storage and layout, poor quality floor mats and the exterior paint seems to scratch easily though i have have put a sealant which has seemed to help performance in winter was amazing though i did add snow tires to enhance the AWD due to the insane hill i live on, traction and performance in inclement weather was flawless. my parents took an HRV FWD for a test drive in Fla and brought it home the same day they love to drive the car and feel as i do that it is just a fun car to drive.

I thought of getting the top-dollar model but I absolutely hate the tablet type of radio and air/heat controls. In my opinion there is brilliance in simplicity and the LX model controls (knobs) hit the nail on the head. The suv drives well. The steering is a bit light but I have been averaging over 33mpg with AWD in my rural setting. I paid $ 21,138 with a $500 military discount. If you refuse to let them put add-on charges they will still sell the car at invoice price. The Bluetooth doesn't understand commands to call someone though. I will have to take it back to Honda for repair.

Super quality, handling, ride and appearance. Mpg now, with 47,000 miles, it is is still averaging 32 with AWD. Comfort, quietness and solid build is the best. Have no idea how the 'professional car evaluators' decided the HRV has marginal acceleration and a 'jumpy' transmission. It has more than adequate acceleration and the tranny is smooth as silk. One design issue that needs improvement is the location of the USB plugs under the center console. You can't use them without being a contortionist with a flashlight but this one quirk isn't enough to change the rating by 1%.

I have had this vehicle since Sept. 26, 2015. I bought the 2016 EX model as it has some of the latest technology. Sunroof, large screen with practical instant information. I've had the car over 2 years now and still pleased with performance and handling and have to admit it's all I need. I like that this is a Crossover. I enjoy the HR-V for handling and easy entry and exit. I would have preferred leather seats but purchased covers which match the interior and keep the seats clean. I use my smart phone for navigation so I felt I did not need the next model up just to get leather and navigation. Lots of features on this little beauty. Smooth ride and comfortable seats. They could put better quality carpeting but this is a minor distraction. I thought the engine could be a little bigger for more power but I have to admit whether in the city or on the highway this is all the power I need. I understand that this is a popular vehicle and I heard sales have doubled since Honda offered it for sale a good 2 years ago will be a very successful addition to Honda's fleet. I will be driving mine for many years to come. One other note - overall when is Honda going to provide us with a more insulation to provide a quiet cabin like Ford does. That is my only negative with Honda auto's, well at least the CR-V and HR-V

You can't have everything you want in any new vehicle, however, our HR-V is a nice ride, comfortable, quiet, handles smooth, acceleration is good (have not tried mountains and steep hills), Great gas mileage (leave in ECO mode and D) Back seats are very easy to move into position needed, style is nice. CONS: Charging area is hard to get too, Touch screen and climate control is frustrating, center console could have a bigger compartment for CD's (instead of the two small ones), back headrest need to be redesigned, Rear tailgate latch need to be automatic or redesigned (one small latch in the middle, not easy to open and have to slam the door to close it - cheap strip above the latch if not knowing how to open the latch, you would pull the cheap strip off - happened 3 times now by someone getting into the back to get something). As far using android phones - ours doesn't work well. Are we sorry in buying the HR-V....not yet - we like it so far, but it's only been 2 months - time will tell. Update: Gettin more use to this HR-V however; cold air comes in both front doors. Had this vehicle since Oct. 2015 now. Still have cold air in doors, dealers won't do anything. Says they all are like that. Reported it to Honda, they took down my information, Vin # and all then said its up to the dealer, called other dealers and they say you have to go where you bought it at. I know I won't be keeping this one like I did my Blazer, Dodge, and Chevy for over 12 years! Won't buy another Honda, they don't seem to care!

I saw this car was going to be released this past Spring, so I waited to see it before decided on a new car to purchase. I like everything about it, but as some reviews indicate, after driving it a while, it starts to make noises that seem to come from the back seat on the drivers side. I initially thought it was the cargo I was carrying or perhaps the wheel and other stuff stored under, but I've checked and everything seems secure. It's weird though. Seems to only happen at low speeds under 35-40 mph. My passengers hear it as well. The second week I had it the wheels seemed to make noise and drag, but it eventually stopped, so I didn't get checked. Now this noise. Perhaps they are related. I've had my first oil change, but forgot to ask them to check to see why all the noise. I expected quality from Honda brand, especially in a brand new car! I see I'm not alone. The HR-V has noise issues after driving for a while. I already got a recall notice, but not for this issue.

I was coming from an 07 rav 4 with 2 wheel drive. I have bounced back and forth between compact vehicles to SUVs. I was looking for the fuel economy of a smaller vehicle, with the safety and AWD options of an SUV. Aside from Subarus, the options were scarce. I'm disappointed Toyota doesn't have an option, and was excited about the upcoming Toyota CHR, but after learning it will not have an AWD drivetrain, it didnt meet my criteria. (I'm not sure why Toyota would do that). I also considered Mazda's cx-3 which looked promising on paper, but it had a very hatchback feel and drove extremely low to the ground. I found the HRV to have the best blend of what I was looking for and is the first vehicle I've seen that truly "feels" like a small SUV inside of its cabin, but offers the drive-ability and fuel economy of a compact sedan. The cabin has plenty of space and feels like my RAV4, but it handles like a car and has very responsive steering. No issues with traction of AWD which are requisites in a north-eastern climate. The vehicles continuously variable transmission takes a little while to get used to, and its admittedly under-powered. I didn't find it straining to accelerate on the highway or anything highly noticeable, but its not peppy. The cabin noise was less than my RAV-4 and I'm hoping that doesn't change as the vehicle ages. The stock soundsystem and screen in the LX model are garbage and I will replace with an aftermarket headunit and integrate the factory back up camera and steering controls into that unit. Overall I'm satisfied with the vehicle, its pretty much what I expected it to be, and was the only option on the market I found to meet all of my criteria to some degree. My biggest disappointment was the factory warranty being slightly shorter than industry standard, and the dealer trying to push a third party warranty from zurich. I'm guessing with Honda's reputation for reliability, the warranty is less of a concern from the manufacturers side. I cant yet speak to reliability or cost of ownership.

After eight years and 40,000 miles, my comments after one month still apply: Subcompact exterior, SUV interior, very good acceleration and performance and fun to drive with 6 speed manual transmission, a true value for a quality car with tremendous versatility, LX well equipped and easy to figure out audio and controls - preferred it to the EX. Look forward to driving this car for many more years. As of November 2023, I have no interest in substituting any other car for my 2016 Honda HRV. The HRV is amazingly fuel efficient and one of the best-looking SUV's on the road. I have had no expense other than routine maintenance at the dealership. It is really unfortunate that Honda and other car companies are eliminating manual transmission with the accompanying performance and sports car-like fun. Manual transmission should at least be offered as an extra cost option to those of us who want to be directly involved in enjoying the driving experience. Honda's choice to pair CVT and turbo engines now makes Mazda a more attractive brand option for all models in my opinion.

I changed jobs and now driving 30 miles each way. I am averaging 35 mph on the highway. This car has been extremely fun and comfortable. My mileage around town is averaging 30-35 mph. This car has been a truly cost saver for me over our other car, a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited.

I had a 2013 Mazda 3 which I loved for the first 2 years (of my 3 year lease), but this last year was ready for something new as it was terrible in the winter as I didn't have snow tires. I was hoping to love the new Mazda CX-3 and while it's gotten rave reviews all around, I hate the interior dash design with it's center tachometer and popup information center that to me looks like one of those navigation units you plop on the dash yourself. And, it was even smaller than my Mazda 3. I wanted an SUV AWD type vehicle and have looked for the last year. For me, having a sunroof is a necessity, and most cars with them were in at least the $26,000-$28,000 range. I got the Honda HR-V EX AWD without navigation or leather for $24,000...it's got everything else. Didn't want to spend the extra money for those features as I can use my iPhone for navigation. I've only had it a week but absolutely love it. For me, it's the perfect fit... size, style, features, price. It is a bit noisier than my Mazda 3 but I expected it to be noisier because of it being a crossover vehicle. It's just under $1,000 more than my Mazda 3 was and has so much more. I had a 2000 Honda Accord EX and 1991 Honda Prelude before the Mazda, so have been happy with Honda purchases in the past. The touch screen is fine with me, was worried it wouldn't be while wearing gloves. I also like that I have 5 options for the color of the dash touchscreen lighting! The console compartment could be bigger.. someone complained about it not fitting CDs, at least it has a CD player. I was told that Jeeps no longer offer them. I use my iPod anyway or bluetooth streaming from my iPhone. I was a little confused on the HondaLink, I won't purchase the cables for $99 since I don't have navigation. Upon researching all the HondaLink apps that you can download, on the 'Next Generation' link, they do tell you that one of the apps available is for navigation for $59.99 off of iTunes. Reading reviews from the App store on it, most people seemed less than satisfied so I will stay with what comes 'free' without the cables or navigation app (which you need the cables for). Bluetooth will suit me fine for music, and Google Maps will suit me fine for navigation. Someone said it didn't have carpeting.. honestly, I never noticed as the car mats cover most of the floor surfaces.. it's still a felt type material underneath. Didn't notice what my last car had but mats were substandard compared to these. I'm a happy customer! UPDATE: I was asked to update my review and am here to report that I'm still a happy customer. I'm glad to update this though, as I wanted to comment on the recent news story about bad ratings for headlights on all SUV/Crossover vehicles. I believe that the HR-V was ranked as #1 as the worst, and I was dumbfounded. I found a video on Roadshow Weekly that compared a 'good' headlight experience with a 'bad' one (presumably the HR-V). It showed driving around curves on a dark winding road with no streetlights. A few days after seeing the video, I drove down such a road and had NO problems as outlined in that article. I signed up so that I could comment on my disagreement with their findings. I have found the headlights to be excellent in all conditions, and this is something that could be a deal breaker for someone considering purchasing this car. The only thing I noticed was that I was leaving a friends camp and going uphill on a bumpy dirt road for a short distance, and the headlights were 'jumping' a bit. This is something that would happen with any car. Again, great visibility in all conditions. Great ride, great features, roomy, I will get the same car again when the lease on this expires.

First impression was that this would be the best of all Hondas...quiet, practical, and fuel-efficient. I've now been stranded several times, and have sometimes called the Honda Roadside Service multiple times in a day to start the car. It's a new model, and the mechanics probably are unfamiliar with the electrical system. I would avoid buying another, and if I can get this one running properly, I'll trade it with only two years of use.

What a move fro a low riding sports car to an SUV

I had owned a sports car for almost 10 years but as my 66th birthday loomed it was getting harder and harder to get out without difficulty. My son, who is an avid Honda fan and owner, had done his homework and highly recommended this model for me. It was love at first ride....so much easier to get in & out of and I was surprised that, even though it was beefier than my Mazda, it takes up less space in my garage. New rides always take a while to get used to but so far I'm enjoying every moment. My small dog always loved to stand between the seats with her front feet on the console. Now she feels like a queen so high up. I was worried about her scratching the leather console but a neoprene sleeve fits perfect over the lid. Looking forward to many adventures in my new HR-V

5 years after my purchase I still am happy with my decision. No out of pocket expenses aside from normal maintenance- Had to replace a rear strut and moonroof motor under the warranty (which is now over) This thing deserves a turbo engine. Period.

Bought 5/21/15. Have 2600 miles. Mostly short city trips. MPG 23.5 City, got 32 on highway one trip. Steering good. turning radius is tight. Style (look) good. Driver's seat is hard, added 1" foam to seat and back which helped. Lumbar killed my back. Could not find commercial pillow to help, make my own out of 4.5" foam, works. I have always had a sensitive back. Ride somewhat bumpy but acceptable. Entry/exit is good, had a 99 Civic prior which was too low. Could be more storage spaces in cabin. Finally came out with a cargo cover in October, but looked cheesy. Made my own out of 1/4" plywood, works gook. Road noise is acceptable, can talk to others. I forget to turn the lights on at night, because the dash is already lite up prior, different from prior car. Acceleration is acceptable.

I got this little SUV because I had a jeep liberty and wanted something that still sat up off the ground a bit, had the storage of my jeep, and still felt "sporty" but was better on gas. Few things I love about this car. One the gas on it is amazing I live in Hawaii and although it's a small island I still drive quite a bit and I dont fill up but once every 2 weeks sometimes even longer. The seats sit up higher than a sedan so I still feel like I can see my surroundings and it's pretty easy to get in and out of. I'm not climbing to get in nor am I squatting to get down in it. Perfect combination. I love how this car handles the road. It hugs every curve you go through and switches lanes with ease. Which brings me to the right side mirror. Mine has the side view so u can see into the other lane by a camera on your radio, which I thought at first I would never use but I'm almost half dependent on it now. I dont feel like theres too many blind spots when checking over my shoulders to switch lanes either which is nice. The driverside mirror doesnt come with the lane watch but there is a small section already built in so you can see what's over there. The storage is great I love that I can choose to flip my rear seats up and they will stay that way as long as the bar is tucked down allowing for way more space for taller objects. The back seats also fold down completely flat and makes the entire trunk space get at least 1/3rd bigger. I'm about 5'10" and feel like I could sleep back there. That also brings me to the room in the car. Being this tall I didnt want a car that I would feel cramped I and I have plenty of head clearance. The back seats also have plenty of leg room so us tall people can fit wherever in this car. The heated seats are awesome too (eventually I'll use them again) but they were amazing in the winter time with the different settings for it. The speakers and radio functions are decent as well. I'm not 18 anymore and dont care to have a "system" in my car but this little thing will give you just the right amount of bass if your desire it. Also the radio functions are super easy to figure out. Easy to pair bluetooth with and easy to customize the color scheme to what you may want. The screen is also a touch screen and fairly sensitive so your not spending half of your time mashing your radio to get it to work. There are multiple charging options in this little car too which can prove to be more amazing than not so if you just have a USB or a actual car charger theres a place to plus your phone in about 3 total I do believe and that's just the front. The rear backup camera sits low to the ground so you can actually see where your going and dont feel like your backing up a truck. Which I have seen in other cars. So i personally feel more confident when using it. Although the backup camera is great theres a few things i would improve on it. Theres no beeping to indicate your getting close to something. There is colors showing if your in the clear or not but a beep would be nice. Also I've seen in other cars where it will help you back straight in and your car wont be half sideways. Not the case with this camera. As long as your wheels are straight it says your straight. I would fix that. The headrest are also very comfortable, it's like they have been lined with memory foam almost. One of my favorite features. So now some of the the things I dont like or would change. This is a small car and isnt meant to go 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. If your going up a hill and trying to get around a car super fast your gonna tell your car isnt up for that but other than that I have no problem it accelerates just fine to me other than getting up a hill super fast. The windshield is a little long for me but then again I'm coming from a jeep to a small SUV. And last con would be the break hold. I very VERY rarely use it. It works as its suppose to I just think it's really a useless feature that the car has. Overall I love my honda and even though I settled with this car (I wanted a Mazda cx5) I'm happy I did. I feel safe and can see all around in the car and I dont get the urge to mash the gas and go (which wouldnt really work to well in the first place) so if your 16 and its your first car or 26 and you need a family car or 96 and need something more for you I think that the honda HRV is a all around win. Sporty enough to suit the weekenders who wander but still safe and family enough to suit everybody else. Buy the car you wont be disappointed.

Love the car, just what I was looking for for a personal v. working vehicle. Just a few caveats: (a) I'm relatively short (5'3") but still have to be careful not to bump knees on steering column when getting in, after that, there's plenty of room, (b) there's precious little handy storage space for incidentals (pens, keys, etc.) in driver's cabin, (c) for some reason, rain drops seem to stay on windshield, washer/wipers don't sweep them away, going to try windexing them today and see if it continues to be problem.

Do your homework before you buy an hrv!

After buying several new cars (luxury included), I thought that I was a faithful honda customer (the last 3 new cars I've bought have been Hondas), but this HRV has changed my opinion about Honda. Shortly after I bought it, the hrv started shaking and rattling so bad that it's embarrassing to drive with passengers in the car. I've never driven a car that does this, let alone a brand new 2016! I took it to the dealership who told me to leave it for at least 6 hours and they'd try to figure out what is making all of the noise. Since no other customers had compained to the service dept about their Hrv's yet (I was the 2nd person to buy an Hrv at that dealership), they didn't know where to even start on mine. I didn't have an extra 6+ hours to waste that day, so I'm planning to have the shaking and rattling diagnosed when I go in for my first oil change. My Hrv is making lots of noise from the front drivers side wheel well and the rear passenger door panel. It also creeks and squeeks when it goes over speedbumps or up a curb to go into my driveway. It was soo bad that a Co worker who wanted an Hrv like mine went to lunch with me in my car and changed his mind after riding in it. He ended up buying a Subaru. I don't blame him. None of this happened on the test drive, obviously, or I wouldn't have purchased it. This all started happening within the first month of ownership though. Maybe I got a lemon, but if the rest of the new Hrvs are like mine, Honda has seriously dropped the ball with their longstanding tradition of quality when it comes to the Hrv. This is is the only new car that I've ever regretted buying. Not what I expected from Honda and I'm greatly disappointed.
