Crash Worthiness
3K miles on the CRV and someone crossed a double yellow line and my daughter hit head on into them. The CRV saved her life. It has a five star crash rating and traveling at speed of 45/47 mph....she walked away without any injury. Air bags activated, seal belts and the headrest protected her. No matter what minor problems a car may have, nothing matters more than a well built car that will sustain an impact and have the occupants walk away!
Medium/Low Mile Maintenance Nightmare
Here's the deal: I'm a car guy and die hard Toyota guy, but I respect Hondas and I promise you I am taking all my bias out of this. My father bought this CRV for my mother with 80,000 on the odometer from a HONDA dealership who did a "pre-sale inspection" and said it passed with flying colors. The car currently has 87,000 and has been a maintenance nightmare. Brakes had to be replaced at 83,000, an easy job and only takes an afternoon in the garage, but it was frustrating that the dealership pre-sale inspection missed simple maintenance like that. Then, at 86,000 the alternator died and fried the battery as well. I've done a lot of alternator jobs before, and this one is the most difficult to get to. I do not recommend doing this at home as you have to pull the power steering pump. An OEM honda alternator was also $425, and a $60 serpentine belt. Not 300 miles later, the clutch on the A/C compressor seized and broke the brand spanking new serpentine belt. I don't mess with A/C systems at all, so we took it to a mechanic friend. $1700 down the drain. At this point I'm just expecting the next $3000 repair job. It's slow to accelerate, handles terribly, what more is there to say? So much for Honda Reliability...DO NOT BUY WITHOUT A WARRANTY.

Sturdy real Utility SUV
I bought this new and the LX model with AWD. Now with 140000 I can't say anything negative. I have had only an AC compressor replacement that did not throw metal into the AC but went out periodically to give me warning. NO other problems other than my own repair of the common power steering O ring air causing leak. A few bucks an 15 minutes. This care has no rust and I live in michigan with no garage. It's interior shows no wear on cloth seats. NO broken functions, nobs or accessories. This car was truly designed for utilitarian use. We have a new HRV and it is far lest sturdy and utilitarian. The 2011 is rough and better made. With regular oil changes, home done brake jobs that are easy this car is easy to maintain from changing plugs to air cleaners and the throttle body. Nine years old and one tail light replacement. Still average 25 miles per gallon city/highway. I changed the transmission fluid and rear differential with honda fluids every 60000 miles. NO tranny problems or rear end noise. Something an owner should do on AWD hondas as they will make noise. This car has plenty of power from my point of view. NO problem entering freeways or passing. This is a real SUV. Sturdy, comfortable and super reliable.
BEWARE-Rear view window has poor visibility
If there's someone short standing behind the vehicle, you will not be able to see them because the rear view window leaves a huge blind spot. I bought this car solely because of safety features, not realizing this problem. Definitely recommend a back up camera even though I never needed one in past vehicles. Also, the gas mileage is no where near as good as it should be. Still love the car as it's very comfortable to sit in with good lower back support. The car also handles perfectly. The AWD handles beautifully in the snow and ice. I would have not made it through this winter without these features! I would recommend this car 100% if the owner got a back up camera.
I bet on its engine that will last over 200K.
Pros: seems like it has good engine, not that strong but lasting. It got timing chain not belt and I hope this could save me on late repair bill. I am very meticulous in keeping the car well maintained, I hope she is good to me too and the relationship between us would last for long miles (hopefully over 200k). Cons: feel hard on driver seat when road is bumpy, several rust spots appear on hatchback door a couple of years ago, battery discharging (very annoying, I believe this is Honda fault, but dealership wouldn't admit this)
