Poor Warranty and Oil Burn in New Car

Faja, 04/24/2020
2009 Honda Accord EX 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 5A)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

Bought the vehicle brand new in Sept 2009 and it was burning oil within a year of ownership. Honda would say they would provide warranty coverage if the car would burn so many quarts of oil in so many miles. The problem was they kept moving the goal posts so they wouldn’t have to provide warranty coverage. Sold the car when it was burning a quart of oil in 1000 miles after 6 years, which Honda claimed was still normal. The oil burn could only have gotten worse over time. Meanwhile there forum posts of lease owners getting their oil burning cars fixed within the first few years. Also took a class action lawsuit to get Honda to replace rear brake pads that were wearing out after only 20,000 miles (less than 2 years of ownership)! These normally wear out after +50k. The maintenance shop still charged me pay $25 to replace them despite the class action settlement (probably some technicality on uncovered labor or parts that Honda snuck in during negotiations). Combined mpg was typically 24-26mpg for me. 32mpg on highway was the highest I got. Replacing cabin air filter was an easy 3 min task. Overall, minor problems for my ownership with very shady corporate warranty coverage. Possibly costly engine repairs for future owners. Recommend a Toyota, Subaru, or Hyundai instead.

constant rattle from early on coming from the console. very annoying. 6 cyl was leaking oil right at 100,000. dealership able to fix for $800ish. Other than those things, this car is everything I could want for $24k. I am 6'3", 240 lbs and fit very well in the front or back seats. trunk very spacious. the engine has plenty of power for my constant merging on the freeway, passing other cars, etc. Update;. Another issue at 110,000 miles. Something wrong with a wheel;. Guessing bearings but have not confirmed yet. I have found Honda to be very unimpressive at backing their vehicles even when there is a known problem. No issues since 110,000 miles; now up to 130,000 miles. Catalytic converter at 132,000 miles. A $1,200 repair. Just had the same on my 2016 pilot as well.

Original owner with 70 k miles on it, garage kept and well cared for. In the 8 years that I've owned it I have spent about $500. in upkeep, which includes oil changes every 4k miles, done at the dealership. Main items replaced are battery, set of tires, rear brakes, air and cabin filter both twice and an alignment. The only thing showing wear is the drivers seat, on the bolsters closest to the door. Gas mileage could be better but the car is large and heavy, so figure 24 around town and low 30's highway. Car has never used oil, but it doesn't have 90k miles yet, either. Hondas have a loyal following because they are honest cars, take care of them and they will take care of you. Great resale, low purchase price and cheep upkeep, that's as good as it gets.

I have thoroughly enjoyed owning this car. Smooth to drive, good in all weather, and just keeps on going. I have experienced a little oil burn issue and do need to change the oil every 4,000 miles. However, other than that I have only had to do regular maintenance. I drive a lot of miles every year and will most likely buy another accord. The only other issue is that at 6'4", sliding in and out at age 60 might become a problem for me. Love this car, and looking forward to the new Tech upgrades a new car will bring.

I had purchased my 2009 Accord in Nov. '11. the brakes sqweaked the next day, and still is now! Had taken the car to Midas, and was told the brakes looks brand new. Yet, sqweeking! The arm rest is wrinkled/bubble. I had read where someone said "the dealer" it was due to body oils. No one sits in the passenger side of my car, so why it it wrinkled/bubbled?! The trunk rattles like nobody's business, the AC makes a funny noise when on low, like it needs oil. Same Honda doesn't stand behind their vehicles, but then again, with these complaints, I would stand behind them either...physically! Here I come Nissan!

Drives and handles well. The TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) light came on the second day I had the car and no matter how I tweak the tire pressure it won't go off (common problem). I assume this may have something to do with side airbags but the sun visors are poorly designed & are not long enough on both the right and left sides leaving gaps for sun glare. The center stereo console is too big & you need pretty long arms to reach the right side buttons comfortably. It's like they just made the buttons bigger and spaced them out to fill up space. The steering wheel has cheap plastic silver pieces in the center that I cannot believe they used. Plastic wheel covers are very cheap.

The Accord is good. reliable transportation. The LX model is pretty plain with nothing fancy but that is what my wife wanted. We have had only a couple of repairs and the car has 96000 miles on it. WE have had all the recommended maintenance performed at the dealer and have found them to be reasonably priced. All things considered it is a very good car, just not that exciting.

I stand by my original review. This car has been very reliable with little to no trouble at all in 90,000+ miles since we've owned it. Brakes, oil changes, a battery and tires is pretty much all we've done to it in 6 years. Oh...and a tune-up (plugs, wires and an air filter). We would buy another Honda Accord tomorrow and highly recommend.

Upgrade from a Mercedes-Benz to a Honda

I took two and a half months to find a new vehicle. I own an E300 and ML350 Mercedes-Benz. I test drove the Mercedes-Benz C350, BMW 5 Series, Saab 9-5, Audi A6, Nissan Maxima, Toyota Avalon, Volkswagen Passat, Chevrolet Malibu, and Cadillac CTS. I drove various cars from Billings Montana to Missoula and back. After a great deal of research and testing I had no choice but to purchase a Honda Accord EX-L V6. In Montana you need a great dependable vehicle for mountain and urban driving – which the Accord certainly is. I appreciate the quality, craftsmanship.

Headrest from hell!

I've had this card for just over two years. So far, the car has been fine mechanically. Had to fix a noise coming from the console, that took a while to resolve. But the absolute biggest complaint I have is the headrest. It pushes your head forward. During a recent vacation, I developed an aggravating pain in my neck and upper shoulders because of the way this headrest is designed. I was told it was required by law to prevent whip lash. Well, how about the problem it causes someone during everyday driving? I have this car on lease, and because of this, I will lease or buy another vehicle that has a headrest that pushes my head forward.

I hate this car and this has been the worst car buying experience ever. My first car note and I'm so unhappy. This was my first "supposedly new" Honda. I had two in the past that were excellent. The brakes are bad, bad, bad!!! I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone!!! I participated in the class action law suit and received a refunds after having brakes changed four times. I purchased my car in March 2009 and I've spent entirely too much time the dealership and of course, brakes are not covered under the warranty. I'm so disappointed with this car and would like something else.

For the last 12 years every car I bought was a honda product. That would be 5 cars, most higher end. I bought a 2009 accord, new with a V6 and everything but Nav. I needed a valve job (4 of 6 were toast) after 8 k. The car was never the same, poor power, power fuel economy.I was concerned, the dealer said they would stand behind it. the transmission started making noise and the brakes went early.Honda claimed nothing was wrong. Brakes went early & basically honda would not stand behind product. They strung me along till i was passed lemon law miles and then said good bye. I feel this car was about what i would expect from ford for $10 k less. Honda lost me.

As a long time owner of Hondas and Acuras, this car has been a great disappointment. Within the first year of ownership we have had to take it in to the dealer 9 times for repairs (not including the scheduled maintenance). Seven of the nine times related to interior parts, including the driver side sun visor spontaneously falling off and dangling in front of the driver. Two of the repairs were on the brakes. Honda is involved in a class action law suit regarding the rear break issue (Google it). The front brakes also had to be replaced this is a separate known issue for which there is a service bulletin. Ask the dealer about the break issues before purchasing this vehicle, I wish I did.

Door panels rattle, sunroof controls rattle, shifter rattles, trunk rattles, brakes had to be replaced at 5000 miles, rear brakes have a class action settlement, hesitates when going around a corner, glove box rattles (replaced three times), driver's door wouldn't open (had to crawl over console from passenger side), both front and rear doors on driver's side had to be "readjusted" because they wouldn't open, squeak under dash, air conditioner makes a popping noise, driver's seat belt had to be replaced because it was making a ticking noise, and the list goes on and on. Car was in the shop 12 times before it even had 5000 miles on it. Last time, they had it for 11 days!

I bought the car a year back. The car is spacious, handles well. Negative side: Excessive road noise. Surprisingly various annoying problems: Steering was making noise. Dealer finally changed the steering, but soon noticing excessive vibrations at highway speed, and when u apply brake. I have been to the dealer 5 times about steering problems but problem persists. Remote won't work beyond 20 ft etc. Let me give you my honest opinion: 1) Accord is not anymore trouble free as it use to be. 2) Road noise makes ypu deaf on longer travel.

I bought the car brand new and have been driving it for the past 18 months. The following is what my experience has been with this car: The car is noisy. The road noise is so loud and bothersome that it soon make you tired of driving the car. Also, makes you feel unsafe driving on busy highway. The leather seats are not comfortable at all. It feels like not enough springs are used for comfort because of toughness of the leather. The engine suffers when A/C is on. Even though I have driven the car 12,500 Miles and the engine is broken in, the MPG stands around 20 in town. This is my first Honda and with the current experience, I would reconsider purchasing it.

Wow I read the negatives by others and I am surprised. I have had over 50 cars and still take cars for test rides. The exl v-6 is one of the best values out there. It's comfortable in every seat, has great visibility, very quick, great quality, and can get very good gas mpg. 20-21 city winter, 22-23 summer and just got 30.1 on a trip to New York. It is easy to get on and out of and when compared to the next jump up like bm, Audi you would spend 10 k more and not have the reliability. Accord still sets the standard of best value for your money !

After 7 months and 7000 miles this car still impresses me. It has a combination of style, performance, handling, reliability, and quality of more expensive cars. I am a car buff and having had more than 50 cars this probably has the highest rating. I had a chance to try the stability control in a parking lot full of snow and ice and at twenty miles per hout driving in a tight circle the car would not slide and loose control ! It usually returns 22 to 24 city highway and one trip rural roads thru mass, Vermont nearly 28 mpg. Does have a little to much wind noise on the highway but that is the only thing I can think of against it. Why buy a more expensive car.

I bought my 2009 Accord, and I HATE it. I have previously owned 2 civics and an Acura CL and this Accord is by far the lowest quality car of them all. After two months the paint on the front started chipping and Honda refuses to do anything about it. It has been the WORST customer service experience EVER. I am trading in the car after 6 months of ownership. Seats are uncomfortable and the car is expensive for the quality. Gas Mileage could be better. I get about 400 miles per tank, but that is 18 gallons of fuel. PLEASE do not make the same mistake I did, Honda has really let the quality consumers are used to go downhill.

The car looks nice and handles very well. The bluetooth, navigation, voice recognition work great! There have been rattles with the glove box, steering wheel, passenger front seat, gear shift lever, inside roof liner. These have been fixed pretty much by the dealer without cost. The ride is a bit noisy for a car of this price, but not too bad. A car like this should have a USB input, not just an auxiliary input. Stop with the spring loaded covers on the aux port, and power ports! Makes it difficult to operate with one hand!! Move the aux/power input from the center console. Impossible to access/plug-in while driving with only one hand!! Climate control works well. Roomy car.

Brakes squeak from day one, transmission makes shredding, tearing noises when putting in reverse and then drive, headrest forces your head forward, when full gas tank sounds like a swimming pool sloshing around and already had a safety recall for poor build quality with "noises" coming from the back of the car. Road noise is horrible on certain roads. You still want to risk buying this car?? My last Honda ever!

I'm not sure why there are a lot of complaints about this car. Mine has been an extremely pleasureful car to drive. For a great price, you get a car with the superior Honda quality and technology, great acceleration (had it up to 130 with power to spare), comfortable and in a very attractive package. I looked at BMW, Mercedes and Lexus. This Accord was whole lot less money and gave all the features yet again, with the Honda reliability and quality. I love the car and I'm very happy with the purchase.

We just returned from a 2,300 mile trip. We got 30.25 mpg which is what the sticker says. I also have a 2007 Chevrolet Impala with a 3.9L that gets 29.0 plus driving 27 miles each way to work. Not satisfied with the car. Lots of road noise, not a comfortable ride and less than expected gas mileage. I was told I should expect mileage in the mid 30's. Very disappointed after reading all of the Honda hype prior to purchase. Unless something changes, this will be my first and last Honda Accord.

Worst road noise experienced. Have owned 8-9 Hondas and this one is a great, great let down. The ride is bumpy and road noise levels prevent a descent conversation with the passenger. Lack of Michelin tires is also a negative. Really surprised at all the interior noise, particularly coming from a manufacturer who set the standard for fine Imported vehicles. So remorseful for purchasing this auto.

Overall, I am enjoying this 2009 EX-L, with auto. It is very roomy on the inside. I can fit, even with a sunroof, at 6'4". It drives very smoothly and handles well. It's by no means, too firm. It soaks up bumps very well. As for the seats, contrary to others, I find them to be quite comfortable and very supportive. The headrest does not bother me at all. In fact, it actually raises up high enough to provide a rest for my head. It doesn't protrude too far forward. The 4 cyl is peppy. The V6 has a lot more power, but the 4 is sufficient for my needs. The downsides are that it lacks a trip computer, no shiftable auto, fog lights are an aftermarket extra and no power passenger seat.

I have owned this Accord for 7 months and overall it's a very nice car. The interior is roomy, plenty of shoulder and leg room. The ride and handling are crisp with a bit of European flavor to it, though it falls just short of the total experience. The sound system is OK but tends to be shrill at times. Gas mileage has been acceptable but not particularly notable. The seats are firm, and at first I didn't care for them, but after a while I learned to appreciate that the firmness is really part of the overall ride and handling and you feel more attuned and attached to the driving experience. Acceleration is middling but OK. Smooth and almost transparent shifting. Great car for commuting.

I had planned on buying used, but the new price was too good to pass up. With the $6000 off MSRP, I have a lot of car for the money. Great looking vehicle with most of the options I was looking for. Interior is classy. Have had the car three weeks, put on 2800 miles including one 1600 trip. Read the complaints about the firm seat. I had some concerns, but after the 1600 miles had no aches or pains, and I am not young. I think it is a great seat. I have been very pleased with the MPG. 27.7 MPG at 78 MPH. 23 MPG around town. Just have to watch jack rabbit starts.

I've owned 4 Honda's in my life, and as the saying goes, they just don't build them like they used to. 94 Accord, 98 Civic, a 00' Accord, and now a 2009 Accord. I bought the 09' Accord because I wanted a new Honda (all my others had been 2nd/3rd owner cars) But, simply put, this 2009 is a disaster - from the sub par brakes, the sub par interior, the sub par dash, to the squeaky fan noise that everyone can hear except the Honda Dealership - all before 20,000miles. It's like they fired all of their good engineers and hired the interns. Simply put, DO NOT BUY a HONDA. You will regret it.

Since the purchase date in Feb 09, I have had nothing but problems. 1) The tire pressure light keeps coming on 2) Muffler had to be replaced due to bad components 3) Both keyless entry remotes went out 4) Driver side seat lumbar support without was replaced 5) Rear brake pads wear out fast, replaced. 6) Tires don't stay balanced and aligned. Although all of these problems was covered by the dealership it's a shame that I have to take a new car in for repair "time after time". This is what you will have to look forward to in the years to come. Oh, the 08 coupe is no better! Warning don't buy Honda!

The window starts too high for you to rest your arm, there is little room for your fingers when you adjust the rear view mirror, console too far right, seat not all that comfortable, too long of a reach to the steering wheel (my shoulders get tired when driving long distances). The sporty feel of driving the car is gone. It handles great, performs great but the inside now feels like a grandpa car. I didn't test drive it enough to notice it at first. I miss the feel of the old car. Bummer. And, they limit how loud the stereo will go! That amazed me.

Rough Ride & Noisy but Reliable

2009 Honda Accord EX-L V-6 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

I've had this car since new and love the power of the V6. The car has been mostly reliable with just a few minor issues. I disabled the VCM system to avoid motor mount issues when the car was just a couple years old. My only real complaint is the fairly stiff suspension that the EX-L V6 comes with. And, the interior is noisy - lots of road noise penetrates the cabin, especially on rough roads. Lastly, the J-series V6 still uses a timing belt and requires a valve adjustment around 100k miles. Luckily I can do those jobs myself, but they require about 4-5 hours of work each to accomplish. But, if you know about those quirks, these are great cars that can easily go 250k miles with just routine maintenance.

I bought it used with about 38K on it and it has 76K on the it now. I drive roughly 19K a year and have had no major issues. Got the rear brakes taken care of with the Honda settlement. It gets me from point A to B just fine. The interior is just ok. Seats are not comfortable for long drives and the driver side showing signs of wear. There is a lot of road noise and the car ride is a little floaty. There a are a few rattles. I replaced the stock wheels with the V6 Accord rims which improved handling a bit (wider rim size). Also will put on TSX sway bar. VCM can get annoying at times but that's how it gets the better gas mileage.

The brakes have squeaked since day one and have been replaced three times. The dashboard warning lights come on when going through the car wash. Covered the first two times by warranty and had to paid $50 the third time. Told the pressure from the drying system is too powerful and shakes the vehicle too much. Not kidding! Engine light came on and they blamed a non-factory air filter. Came on the next day and they told me their service bulletin said clean with air pressure. Really? Now the panel holding the fuses has become corroded and needs replaced - $1,500. No accountability from Honda NA. Told by Honda CS it can't be that much of a piece of junk because I have 50K miles on it!

Honda's reliability and great resale value carried the day, so I bought one. On balance my Accord has been reliable transportation without too much to complain about. That said, if you fancy yourself a "car" person then do yourself a favor and consider buying something else. There is nothing in an 09 Accord to get very excited about nor terribly disappointed with. The premium 270 watt stereo is on par with a good bed side table top clock radio. The ride is road connected, to me bumpy and a little noisy even with the best new Michelin summer tires installed recently. It's car 101. Plain, simple, safe, reliable, boring transportation.

2009 Accords Have So Many Problems

What's happening to Honda cars... My first Honda was 1978 Civic. I traded all of my several Honda cars (Civic, Accords and Pilots)around 160K miles for newer ones. My parents, my sibling families love the Honda cars. This trend is ending. This piece of garbage 2009 Accord EXL is a piece of junk from day one. The brake squeak and I thought it need to be brake in. A year later, I complained to the dealer and I was told that is a known problem. I was told ny Honda service advisor that just turn on the stereo louder and I will be fine. Now, I just found out the well known A/C condensor prone to damage from road debris. Is this US specific Honda issue???

We bought a new Honda Accord 2009 for my husband in June '09. He's tall (6.02) and we couldn't afford a SUV. This was the only car with enough space for his legs. He heard the brakes noise from the beginning. We took it to the dealer..they said nothing was wrong. NOW, we have to pay the repairs for the front and rear rotors and brake pads! 2 years and 34000mile only. They were going to a law suit at the time we bought this car! We had no idea! But the dealer knew...they didn't care ! Not then, not when I went back, not even now! Shame on them! Premature rotors & brakes pads wear ! It's a manufacture problem; they'll not agree with that! This is my first and last Honda. It's for sale

My elderly parents bought this car without asking their daughters opinions. We would NEVER have suggested such a purchase with this piece of crap. They traded, well got robbed, of their Cadillac CTS and paid cash for Honda and it's been nothing but a money pit and a pin in their and my whole family's life. We were wanting something they could keep for rest of their life but holy geez that won't happen. I bought a Mercedes and it's simply the best vehicle I've ever owned and will ever own. I'm hoping to get this heep fixed and passed on to a mechanic that can constantly work on and put oil in it weekly!! I don't know where the oil is going but I know this is the biggest piece of CRAP EVER MADE. HONDA NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING FOR THE PEOPLE THAT OWNS ONE. Seriously a horse and carriage would be more comfortable and less of a pain [non-permissible content removed] and cheaper to run than this heep. They hate their self more everyday it seems and they shouldn't be worried about anything at their ages. They are in their 80's and just need a safe reliable car. That's it. DONT BUY A HONDA EVER!! Please listen to all these posts. We all CANT BE wrong.

I decided to buy Accord EX over Civic Hybrid but went with my heart instead of my head. Accord is really big but it is driven like a mid size car. Overall build quality and design is better than Camry and other competitors. Mazda6 is the best in terms of pure driving experience but the overall quality and resell value are major concerns. Civic Hybrid is probably the best choice in term of overall value but it does not come close to Accord in every other aspects.

Very satisfied to date, car is 2009, I presently have 3800 miles, I am retired, this spring will take long trips. I had a 2005 Linc T/C, thought I would have major driving transition, not so, I find Honda 6 fun to drive, fast, comfortable, alert, & certainly never think about gas vs Linc

Everything is great except for the driver seat. Very uncomfortable. I hate how many reviewers wrote the same comments but STILL recommend buying it. I wouldn't EVER buy a Honda again. The seat is a killer on my back.

I bought my wife a 2009, Accord, EX-L, nav, with every option. We love the car. The car has Lexus and Infiniti styling at a fraction of the cost. More room than the M-series, and better mileage. This is our fourth Accord, and is our first leather Accord. The back seat room is incredibly large, and our sons are 6'2" and 6'4". Their legs don't touch the front seat. This is the best Accord that Honda has ever made. If I had the money, I would get two of them. Don't worry about the road noise. This car is pure quality.

I test-drove many cars, several of which were great (Prius, 2010 Ford Fusion, Camry) but as a confirmed Honda driver, I came back to the 2009 Accord. Love everything, but I have to agree with several other reviewers that the driver's seat is often downright uncomfortable -- I'm a 5'6" female and the seat back hits me in the wrong place, throwing me into a very unnatural position. Putting on the lumbar makes matters worse. I'm hoping the seat softens up and takes on the arm-chair cushiness of my 2006 Accord. Cup holders are still in bad position and dangerous because you have to look down at them to remove a beverage cup. But it's a beauty, decent mileage, drives well, plush, very roomy, mine!

I have had 6 Mercedes and 6 Hondas, this is the best of all. Firm, comfortable seating and great economy, 24.8 to 29.4 mpg during the 13,500 miles I have put on the car in 5 months. Cylinder deactivation is flawless. There have been no maint. or repair issues at all. A perfect car! Very spacious vehicle for pax and cargo. Memo to Honda... integrate grab handles into the A-pillars, use a manumatic trans, a fuel mileage readout would be nice in this class of car,a sixth gear or lower ratio for fifth gear for better highway mileage, and memory seats would be nice. This is a great and almost perfect vehicle. Buy and enjoy.

Paid $19,995 for LXP package plus taxes no destination. Has door security, alloy wheels, CD/am/fm, no gps, no sunroof. Friends are getting 24mpg I avg about 20. I have never before driven a car where the mileage is lower than the advertised MPG. The unlock button sometimes needs repeated hits to work, good thing the drivers door still has a key. I think the code reset on the remote sometimes doesn't connect correctly.

I picked up my car Saturday. I love being in it and driving. It's a comfortable ride, and looks great. I would definitely recommend this car for the money. I purchased the taffeta white with the tan interior, it looks so luxurious. I love it!
