2025 GMC Sierra EV Review
by the Edmunds Experts
Pros
- Estimated 460 miles of range from the Max Range version
- Midgate design is useful to expand cargo space
- Upscale interior
- Nimble low-speed maneuverability for a truck
Cons
- More expensive and less efficient than other EV trucks
- Ride can be rough on some surfaces
- Google-based infotainment doesn't allow for Apple CarPlay connectivity
Overview
The 2025 GMC Sierra EV is a full-size electric truck. Though it shares its name with the regular Sierra, there's really nothing else that it has in common with its gas-powered sibling. And with up to 760 horsepower, 460 miles of range on a full charge, and a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds, the 2025 GMC Sierra EV has some serious numbers to boast about. GMC introduced the Sierra EV last year as a single, fully loaded Denali Edition One trim level. For 2025, it has a revised lineup with the Max Range, which is pretty much last year's Edition One, and the new, slightly less expensive Denali Extended Range trim level. GMC also says it will bring out lower-price Elevation and AT4 trim levels later in the 2025 model year.

Am I Ready for an EV?
- EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
- If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
- Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.
Edmunds spotlight: Midgate makes a difference
Every electric pickup truck currently on the market has a short cargo bed with no option for a long bed. But the GMC Sierra EV is a more versatile cargo hauler thanks to its special MultiPro MidGate feature. The midgate is a panel, much like a truck's regular tailgate, that you can fold down after folding down the truck's rear seatbacks to open up a space between the cab and the cargo bed. With the midgate and configurable tailgate both lowered, the Sierra EV provides nearly 11 feet of cargo length, which is enough for a kayak or other long loads. You can also remove the rear midgate's window for taller items like a couch, or just fold one side if you want to carry a passenger as well as long items.
Competitors to consider
There are a surprising number of electric trucks on the market these days. The Sierra EV Denali's most direct competitor is the mechanically similar Chevrolet Silverado EV, but we think the Denali's classier interior gives it an edge. There's also the Hummer EV, which also shares its mechanicals with the GMC and Chevy but has more power and off-road capability. Other choices include the Ford F-150 Lightning, which comes in lower-priced trims; the Tesla Cybertruck; and the Rivian R1T.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8/10
How does the Sierra EV drive? Like most EVs, the GMC Sierra EV is quicker than its gas- and diesel-powered counterparts. At the Edmunds test track, our Sierra EV Denali Max Range truck accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, nearly 2 seconds quicker than a Sierra 1500 Denali. While it's not as quick as the max-power versions of the Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning or Tesla Cybertruck, you won't ever be wanting for power.
Emergency braking power is adequate for such a heavy truck, and the Sierra EV does offer one-pedal driving, so you can just lift off the accelerator pedal to slow down in everyday driving rather than using the brake pedal. Handling is ponderous, and this tall and long vehicle takes up a lot of room on the road. The rear-axle steering system, though, does tighten up the truck's turn radius and makes parking easier.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the Sierra EV? One of the Sierra EV's biggest weak spots is ride quality. The standard 24-inch wheels use tires with skinny sidewalls, making the ride somewhat stiff and busy. The Sierra EV can smooth out large bumps fairly well, but you'll feel a lot of small road imperfections in the cabin. At least the seats are relatively comfortable. The front seats offer quite a bit of adjustment, and the heating and ventilation settings work very well to keep your back and bottom comfortable.
The climate control system as a whole works quite well, with warm heat and cold air conditioning. We like that GMC still uses physical controls for the climate system rather than the touchscreens you'll find in rivals. The Sierra EV is relatively quiet, though we noticed more road noise on the highway than we'd prefer for a $100,000 vehicle.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The interior is the biggest thing separating the Sierra EV from its twin, the Chevy Silverado EV. The Sierra EV Denali offers a larger infotainment screen with a slightly easier-to-use layout. It's still not as polished as what you get in a Rivian or a Tesla, but it's responsive and easy to read. We just wish so many controls — including those for the headlights — weren't tied to the touchscreen.
The Sierra EV's interior is spacious in both rows, and standard running boards make getting in and out of this tall truck relatively easy. Adults of any size should be comfortable inside. The driving position is decent for a truck, but the small steering wheel blocks some of your view of the instrument cluster. Outward visibility is obstructed somewhat because of the truck's small mirrors, tall hood and somewhat narrow window. At least the surround-view camera system can show you lots of different views to help you park.

Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? While the regular GMC Sierra offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Sierra EV follows the trend of other electric GM products and ditches both in favor of a Google-based infotainment system. You can log in with various apps through the screen rather than through your phone. The maps for the navigation system all come from Google Maps, too, which is actually an improvement over most in-car navigation systems. Still, we wish GMC would at least offer the option of phone connectivity beyond Bluetooth.
One area where the Sierra EV's tech does shine is in terms of driver aids. The Sierra EV Denali comes with GM's excellent Super Cruise advanced driver aid system. It allows for hands-free highway driving, and it works fairly well in practice. As far as hands-free systems go, Super Cruise is one of the best.

Towing and Storage
8.5/10
How are the towing and storage? The Sierra EV offers a decent amount of storage inside the cabin. There are sizable door pockets, a massive center console with several bins, and plenty of cupholders in both rows of seats. Like other electric trucks, the Sierra EV offers a front trunk. It's not massive, but it's large enough for a quick grocery run or for some small luggage. Got small children? You'll like that the rear seat has three sets of LATCH anchors, all of which are easy to access and use to install child safety seats.
While we appreciate the in-cabin storage, the Sierra EV really shines when it comes to towing and hauling. The 1,500-pound payload rating isn't impressive on its own, but the Sierra EV offers more bed space than any other electric pickup. The folding midgate lowers the rear seats, allowing you to extend the bed to inside the cabin. It's legitimately useful. Also impressive is the Sierra EV's 10,000-pound towing capacity. While range will fall significantly when towing a trailer, the Sierra EV still offers more range than any of its rivals.

Range and Efficiency
9/10
How are the range and efficiency? The Sierra EV is launching with a choice of two battery packs: the Extended Range with 390 miles of EPA-estimated range and the Max Range with 460 miles of estimated range. Our Sierra EV Denali Max Range test vehicle blew past its estimate, traveling a full 507 miles on a single charge. The price you pay for that range is poor efficiency. We measured consumption at 48.1 kWh of electricity used for every 100 miles of driving. That's more electricity used than what we measured from the Rivian R1T, Tesla Cybertruck and Ford F-150 Lightning. The Sierra EV needs a very large battery to go that distance, meaning charging times can be long, even at powerful fast-charging stations.
Value
7.5/10
Is the Sierra EV a good value? At launch, GMC is only offering top-shelf versions of the Sierra EV. That means prices for this truck are significantly more than the Rivian R1T, Tesla Cybertruck or Ford F-150 Lightning. That said, you do get a lot for the price. The Sierra EV's interior is more upscale than the Ford or Tesla (though still not quite as nice as the Rivian), and you get loads of standard features. That includes GM's excellent Super Cruise system of driver aids. The Sierra EV offers more range than any of its rivals, too, though the poor efficiency means it will cost more to recharge the Sierra than other electric trucks.
Wildcard
8/10
The Sierra EV looks like any other GMC Sierra at first blush, but the smooth and aero-efficient bodywork, copious LED lighting, and 24-inch wheels help the Sierra EV stand apart. It's not as striking as a Rivian R1T or as divisive as the Tesla Cybertruck or GMC's own Hummer EV, but that can work in the Sierra EV's favor. The interior is better than that of most electric trucks, but it's not what we'd consider luxury. The Sierra EV is fairly quick for a pickup, but this truck won't entertain in the same way as an R1T or Hummer EV on the street or off-road.
Which Sierra EV does Edmunds recommend?
The 2025 Sierra EV debuts as the Denali Extended Range or Max Range. Of the two, we think you should get the Denali Extended Range. You'll get all the fancy stuff that makes the Denali so nice but at a notably lower price. It still has a compelling 390 miles of range too.

2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 4dr Crew Cab 4WD SB (electric DD)
And I've quite literally had them all. Every EV from Hyundai, Ford, Tesla, Rivian, Audi, etc. With plenty of gas/diesel powered vehicles in there. And lots of trucks. I've got a good amount of experience with vehicles and I have to say, this Sierra EV Denali is easily the best combination of full-size truck practicality, comfort, technology, range, and charging speed.
The air … suspension does a great job of managing rough roads, despite these massive 24" wheels on 35" tall tires. The interior is relatively quiet, road and wind noise are well suppressed. The seats have real leather, which feel and smell great. They are better than current gas trucks, but could have more padding, and massage would be nice at this price point.
I also can't stress the usefulness of rear-wheel steering. While it may sound like a gimmick, it makes parking and maneuvering in tight space a non-issue. It even helps on curvy roads or even slicing through traffic. Basically, it feels like a mid-size truck. Or smaller. It has a tighter turning radius than my R1T.
Real-world range is around 380 miles on a full charge (EPA est 440). And that's driving at TX highway speeds around 80mph. When you do need to charge, lots of EA and EVgo stations around here have no problem holding around 350kW until you get closer to 80%. Basically, I can treat this as I do my ICE trucks. Even in colder weather, which only has a minor impact to range. The heat pump and overall EV engineering are solid. Just decide where I want to stop for restroom and food breaks that happen to have EV charging. You can even use most Tesla stations if you don't mind a bit longer wait to charge.
The infotainment system is pretty good. It's all Google-based, Google maps, much like using an Android phone. I'd still like to see more features added for EV navigation and home screen customization, but it's been super accurate on road trips with calculating range and EV stops.
However, no vehicle is perfect. There are still the usual signs of GM build quality, such as rattles here and there. Which the GMC dealer has been addressing. On the plus side, material quality is much improved as evidence with no creaking. There is no spare tire, just a fix-a-flat kit. And they absolutely need to include a shade for the huge pano roof. While it does a surprisingly good job of blocking heat, sometimes I just don't want the sun in my face. And torque steer at WOT needs to be addressed. Fortunately, I rarely need to do that. It has ample power for passing and merging without even pushing it past 50%.
Overall, I've been extremely please with the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. It looks fantastic, it's way easier to park than any other full-size vehicle, Google tech good enough that I don't miss Android Auto or Carplay, and I can forget about range anxiety. They aren't cheap, but there are some good deals if you shop around. It might be more affordable than you think. Especially when you consider the 205kW battery pack alone would be more than double the cost of the vehicle.
