Purchased the car in 2005 with 30k on it. The truck operated fine until I hit 125,000 miles. at 125, the transmission went out and I had to put a new one in. at 135k, the timing belt went out. I guess the way they designed the belts, they have to pull the engine out of the truck to replace them, so we're talking approx 3,000 to replace the belt. The tow truck guy and the mecanic both said that whoever designed these was an idiot. lovely.

Don't buy an Explorer

Our rotors warped four (4) times with in 10,000 miles. We had trouble out of the transmission, and various other parts and components. I'm pretty sure that we will never buy an Explorer again. We had nothing but a headache and terrible fuel economy (14 miles per gallon). We eventually had to go through the Dispute Resolution Program and won against Ford Motor Co. They had to buy the vehicle back.

This SUV has some real problems cosmetically. The paint begins to peel after a few years, the panel on the liftgate cracks for no reason other than a bad design flaw, and the black trim on the doors fades and cracks after a few years. The worse thing about all of this is that after selling someone this SUV for $30,000, Ford will not stand behind one of their most expensive products and help the consumer out, especially when the design flaws and defective paint jobs are Ford's own mistakes. As far as reliability, I have had no problems yet, but the transmission is pretty clunky, and will probably not last as long as it should. We had a 2000 model that needed a new tranny at 44,000 miles.

Nice SUV, Only problem with truck is it is it's interior is smaller than a 93 model I had owned. Also the DVD player's scene is right in your rear view mirror when the kids are watching, which is all the time. Still it beats having the kids fighting all the time on long trips. They were never so quiet before. Gas mileage could have been better 16-17 highway!!!! Over all GREAT SUV
