Better real world MPG than our Tahoe

We own an '07 Tahoe alongside an '08 Expedition. I don't know how the EPA got their MPG figures but in the similar driving, I am getting slightly better MPG in the Expedition and I believe it is because of its 6 speed transmission as opposed to the Tahoe's abysmal 4 speed. The Tahoe has better off the line torque but its 4 speed logic makes downshifting a "forget about it" scenario. The transmission in this car is beautiful, upshifts/downshifts at precisely the right times and it doesn't quarrel with the driver. This car rockets along at higher speeds but lacks the punch of the Tahoe at low speeds. Interior noise is pin-drop quite at low speeds but picks up a lot of wind noise on the highway

Love my 09 Expedition

Bought this car with 82000 on it in 2015. It's an EL and you can't beat the roominess, the comfort, the leather, etc. The mileage is not bad for such a big truck - solid real 11-12 in stop and go. Up to 18-20 if all highway. Mix gives solid 14-15 depending. My 2014 Durango (too small and weird shifting) only did a little better 14-15 in traffic and low 20s on the road. We liked the 09 Expedition so much we traded the Durango for a used 2015 Expedition. Which is also great, albeit mileage with the turbo is say 3 or 4 mpg better. Have 93000 on my 2009 now and I expected we'll get to 150,000 for sure. You can get a good price on a used one so let someone else eat the first and second (or more) years depreciation.

It's been a great SUV for the family! The safety and comfort of a full size SUV with top notch dependability that Ford delivers. We've put 160k miles on and still going strong!

Long lasting SUV; the last of the rugged haulers

The 2007-2014 expeditions are the best I have found! The best feature is the massive towing capacity. My 08' has a towing capacity of 9200lbs (2wd). Next, the absolute best 3rd row out there. Recently drove a new GMC Denali Yukon XL and the third row was too low, not as long, and not as comfortable. The fold flat feature makes hauling in the vehicle a breeze. I have 171k Mike's on mine and it is still going strong. While I have had maintenance, no engine or transmission issues at all. I primarily use this vehicle to tow and long trips. This is a very comfortable ride. I love the steering (vs looser truck steering). Truly a beast. I have been looking at the newer expeditions, but can't leave behind my tried and true v8 model. I'm going to keep this one until it dies.... Update 09/20. Sold my 08 expedition with over 180k and was still running strong. Upgraded to a 2011 with less miles. Just a few extra features added. Love my expedition!

Follow up on Exped vs. Lambda Platform

500 mile trips. Hauling kayaks, bikes, and stuff for the twins, the Eddie gets better with age. Pile on the payload and it still rides level. Being 6'6" it's the only vehicle I can move the seats up & still fit. Mileage is amazing - getting 20 mpg (3.31 rear end)highway doing the speed limit. Overall Average 16-18 mpg. DVD keeps the twins entertained, while the NAV gets us where we go. No complaints, no regrets. Looking to purchase a travel trailer and the 9K pound capability expands our choices. If you're thinking cross over platform the Expedition is a better choice.
