I have the Cummins 5.9L Turbodiesel and love it! It has great performance, starts flawlessly, and gets 18mpg at a minimum. The only problem was an AC compressor wire that shorted out and had to be replaced.

Cummins Diesel Still the best

The Cummins ISB 5.9L diesel engine is still on the top with it's low end torque and great reliability. The Dodge package this engine sits in is still appealing and will be missed as the new body styles role out. The noise that the engine produces turns most gas engine buffs off but the noise can be minimized in the cab with a little sound proofing. I love the diesel you can make this engine considerably more powerful with less than $2000 dollars if you buy a 5 sp or 6 sp transmission. Standard is the best choice in these trucks due to the power/torque output of the engine.

I bought this truck new in 2001. It is a daily driver and I've put over 205,000 miles on it so far. I have never had any major drivetrain issues except the replacement of the front hub bearing at 200,000 miles, tranny governor at 120,000 miles, and A/C stuff (evaporator and compressor replacement). I have driven the new Ram 2500 with the Hemi and I still love my truck better. If I could have any vehicle in the world it would be a brand new 2001 Ram 2500. If you maintain it properly it will give you a million miles; I'm counting on it....

Great Truck, But...

When this truck runs, it really does a super job of towing a GN horse trailer, loaded down. It's awesome in steep terrain and on dirt roads, in ice, snow and on slick roads. However, at 42,000 miles, the clutch went out and was a pricey repair. Now the transmission made a popping sound and wouldn't engage. I'll have it towed to the dealer tomorrow. These breakdowns are serious and frustrating. And, Dodge Motors has no interest in covering these breakdowns so it's become a costly truck to own.

Bought the truck used with 54,000 miles on it. Use it to pull a 16,000 pound fifth wheel from Texas to California and back several times. Use it in my construction business. Previously owned a new 96, and 98 before buying this one and this is by far my favorite. If you buy a Dodge truck you will replace the front brake pads every 35,000 or less, but that is a small price to pay for this kind of quality. My V-10 has more power and torque than the cummins turbo diesel and the two speed torque converter in this truck always keeps you in the perfect power range. The automatic transmission went out on the trip back from DC while pulling a larger trencher dozer @ 155,000 miles. Great truck!

The truck was great for the first 6 years. I had one minor air conditioning repair at around the 2nd year. Then everything started falling apart. The AC began spewing out stinky liquid so the heater core had to be replaced, then the car wouldn't shift out of 2nd without manipulating the gas pedal so the solenoids in the transmission had to be replaced. I pull a 8000lb horse trailer a dozen times a year and when the truck is behaving, she pulls great. I don't think she liked being a commute vehicle.. sitting in bay area traffic I'm sure contributed to the wear and tear. The next truck I get I'm buying will definitely be a 4x4!! I got her stuck more than once.

Expensive Disappointment

Bought the vehicle new with an "over- build, under-use" mentality. I hauled a cabover camper (1800 lbs) in the back of the truck for approximately 3K of the 58K miles I put on the truck. Front brake caliper failure at ~45K miles; serious damage to front rotor, cost $1K to repair. Transmission failure at 58K miles, cost $32K to repair. The CTD is bullet-proof, no doubt, but the Dodge components matched to it are of poor quality and reliability. Bad experience with dealership repair center as well. Lost my booty on this vehicle -- Daimler/Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge and I will part ways for the rest of my natural life . . .

I had problems with the oil sending unit which Dodge would not or could not fix. Nor would they acknowledge the problem. Since Dodge showed no interest in customer service or retention, I am now a proud owner of a New F250. The brake system and noise in the steering colunm are also a concern. Although Dodge did acknowledge the steering column problem, they refuse to notify current and future owners of the problem or simply recall the defect. As it was explained to me, the noise is a result of faulty spacers in the steering column.

High Output Cummins backed by New Venture 6 speed manual transmission. What a great combination. 3.55 axle gears with limited slip rear end. Worst mileage to this point has been 17.4mpg running around town. Hauls my 600 pound 4 wheeler around like it's not there. Drop it in 6th gear on the highway and pass people without shifting. I was looking for this truck in a Chevy or GMC but I am now a Cummins/New Venture fan.

I started having problems right after the warrenty expired. The dealer is not interested in fixing. Dodge is not interested in fixing. These trucks have bad transmissions & lift pumps. My lift pump went out at 66K miles & destroyed the injection pump. $4000 later it is running again. Now the tranny & ball joints are going out. Buy a horse, you will get farther down the road.

Overall,a pretty good vehicle, however I'm not very pleased with warranty repair response from Dodge Dealerships. Experienced two rear axle seal problems on same axle within 51,000 miles, which ruined the rear brakes, and Dodge would not repair. One recall for fuel boost pump(rebuild) which later failed and no consideration given.

The V-10 (488 CID) will out pull my 2000 Cummins. Its probably the best engine made. Only drawback is poor fuel economy. I have never had any problems with this vehicle in the 5 years I have owned it. The 5 speed manual is tops. Have only used the 4 wheel drive once, and it worked perfectly. Leather heated seats are a plus. I perform maintenance according to the owners manual.

This truck is real truck, a work truck and an everyday comfortable truck. It goes to church as well as it goes in snow. After 427k miles, the only real problem I have had is an odor of diesel fuel in the truck if I sit idling with the outside air on. It has been like this since new, and I have talked to many other owners who did not experience this problem. I have talked to many owners who had multiple transmission problems, but I have always maintained mine and after all these miles it still works perfectly. I like this truck so much that I am trying to buy another just like it, but with 400k less miles.

Had nothing major go wrong except for a pressure sensor on the transmission, which was simple to fix. Cummins turbo is awesome. Haven't met a challenge it could not handle. Outside stance and overall look is awesome. Sharper than any Ford or Chevy in town. Dependable starting in the winter time and good fuel economy in the summer time. All I want is a newer model!

My truck has been a great service to me. Fuel injector pump went out at 30000 miles and again at 200000 miles. Clutch went out at 130000 miles and again at 300000 miles. At 430000 miles we just had the front end all redone. Our only problem was with the brakes and tires wearing quickly. The front end takes a big hit from that heavy engine.

The fuel mileage sucks but like just aobut every other review thats normal from a dodge truck. I bought this truck to tow with and so far it has been great, haven't had a chance to tow anything more than the boat but i should be towing my jeep with it soon and i will make another post when I do

Cummins standard output, 5 spd with NO problems, never been back to the dealer. Milage 15-17 with a lead foot. I've had 4 tons of dirt in the box several times, drove 25 miles and it did well. I can tow a 12K 5th wheel trailer all day at 75 with 12 mpg. I was a Chevy man, but I had a lot of bad luck with 'em. I hope to buy a new '03 3500 Dodge Cummins HO soon. I think the '01s & '02s are more HD than the '03s. My last truck was a '96 2500 V-10 & doubled my milage with the Cummins, but the v-10 was GREAT. Dodge/Cummins is the only medium duty rated truck on the market.

Great manuverability, parks easy, turns around-much better that Ford. Would buy another for the wife if I could afford it!

Great truck if your looking to go a long ways. Fuel economy was great with this truck with the Diesel motor and 5 speed tranny.

This vehicle has performed beyond my wildest expectations of any truck on the market. I drive this baby hard all the time and have ever since I got it. I bought it new and have owned it almost 5 years. I have put 122,000 miles on it which is around 23,000 miles a year and it has never been in the shop except for regular maintenance every 4,000 miles and for replacing the brakes. The diesel Cummins engine is the best diesel on the market bar none and it pulls heavy loads like a workhorse. The only complaint I have about the vehicle is the braking system. It does not brake like I think it should especially during wet weather.

The truck takes weight excellent, and with 3000 pounds of weight it isn't even on the helper springs. I think it is more of a rugged work truck than the Fords and Chevys.

This has been a great truck. Have not had a single problem and have 31K miles. Avg 18MPG in everyday use and up to 21 highway. Avg 13MPG pulling 8500 boat from Salt Lake City to Seattle. HO diesel linked to six speed pulls great. Put it in 1st and I can idle out of the boat launch. With a winch on the front and the wheel base it's a little long for parking. Rides fine for a truck with heavy duty camper package.

In the four years I've owned this truck it has only let me down once. A faulty oil preassure sending unit caused me to call a tow truck. Other than that, the truck has done everything I've asked of it, both on the farm and over the road. It,s very comfortable on long trips; with the large fuel tank and exceptional fule mileage the diesel engine provides it will go much farther between pit stops than I can.

Had minor problems with power windows that the dealer took care of asap. Had my alternator go around 12,000 miles. Dealer also replaced that asap. Plenty of power to tow my 26' camper. Have taken it out west (1100 miles one way) hunting 3 times and has run flawlessly each time. Must be careful on icey roads with the limited slip rear end. Fun to drive, plenty of power and probably the best truck I have ever owned. Will buy another.

My Ram has the Cummins and 5-speed. I've put about 70,000 miles on it, and it's been extremely reliable; no mechanical failures or problems whatsoever. It gets about 20 mpg on the highway, which is amazing for a truck that weighs 6500 lbs. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this truck to anyone who needs a heavy-duty work truck.

Other than ext. mirror heater failure, and a dashboard fuse problem... all covered under warranty by the way.... the truck has performed flawlessly. Pulled my travel trailer from point A to point B with a grunt and a smile. Always started and loved hauling wood. Great truck but would upgrade to diesel for the increased mileage...but unfortunately trucks are over priced now.

I’ve owned the 2500 4X4 since 2001. It’s been a great truck and I overhauled the 24 Valve Cummins at 350,000 miles as recommended. The stock fuel pump is notoriously bad and I had to replace it but otherwise it’s performed as advertised. I’ve pulled plenty of gooseneck trailers loaded with cows or horses many a times all over the west and she still goes strong.
