1995 Dakota SLT Automatic with OD 3.9
I got this truck about three weeks ago and I think it all ready deserve's a good review. I got this truck from a friend of my grandpa, his grandson had busted out the cab glass and passenger side window, so he decided that he would give it to me for free questioning if it still runs. It had sat for two years, so I pulled it home, hooked up a battery not expecting anything but trouble and to my surprise with two year old gas it fired right up. I've now drove it about 700 miles, and can say there are no problems with 189,000 miles on it. I can say it gets about 20 in town 25+ on the highway, I have either 323/355 gears the owners manual didn't give the exact gears but it has plenty of power.
Great Truck!
Bought used off eBay great price, sight unseen. When picked-up instrument cluster was dead - no speedo, but had cruise. Drove that way from MA to PA & commuted from PHL to BFO for month. Cluster replaced from junkyard - $35. Tot. miles unknown. I've added 50K+. Orig. from NH. Radiator disintegrated last summer. Brakelines rusted out. V-6 w/5spd = outstanding. Uses daily commute, home improvement projects, towing cars and trailers, etc. Heavy, rough use. Great ride. Rear wheelwells, bottom of doors rusting through. AC compressor replaced from eBay. Headliner has now fallen down. Get 19 mpg commuting, 21 mpg w/ popup on highway, 23 mpg w/o trailer w/ tonneau on highway.

Victors 1995 Dakota
Purchased this truck for daily transportation and towing travel trailer. Added aftermarket ignition and exhaust to improve performance with good results. Only serious problem was a water leak into cab that took 7-8 visits to dealer to finally fix. Heavy duty suspension and towing package well worth the $$ . Extremely pleased with it.
'95 Dakota SLT
Fun to drive, does everything asked, and beats those hemi Dodges at the lights! Hauls boat with no problem and is excellent at boat launch-easy to maneuver and great traction coming out of the water.
Gonna miss my Dodge
This was a great truck. I bought it with 65,000 miles on it from a private owner here in Michigan and it may have been the best vehicle I have ever owned. Finally, at 152,000 miles, the repair to the main oil seal and other small stuff it needs are too much for the value of the truck. Time to put her out to pasture.
Awesome truck!
I bought this truck when it had 82300. I loved it. I have sold because we had a baby. But I really enjoyed it. I had the 5.2 with 5speed manual. It had a lot of power for the truck. Gas mileage was great. It would get 20 on the highway easy if empty. I towed a trailer and had a load total of about 1200 to 1500 pounds. I drove 240 miles at 75 to 85 and it still pulled out 17.5 mpg. You don't find that very often. Just be sure to take care of it and it'll take care of you. My first problem was at125k with a fuel pump, than after that at146k. But over all a awesome truck! This truck was one of my very favorites. You'll enjoy it!
Dodge - Lives up to it's name!
Typical Chrysler product! A/C system has failed 4 times, total repair costs exceed $2500. Transmission failed twice ($3200). Radiator replaced ($300). Electrical system failures ($600). Valve lifter collapse (est $1200 to fix). Steering rack ($1100). Five sets of tires in 90K miles because the front end won't stay in line. Paint peeling off. Radio display quit at 50K. Never has seen over 14 mpg on highway. Unless it comes in on a tow truck, dealer "can't duplicate the problem".
Second time around
I purchased this truck from a co-worker who had it brand new from the dealer. I had a 1988 LE and loved it except for the lousy leg room. With the extended cab, I am comfortable and secure in it at all times. the V6 has all the power i need and then some!
Love This Truck
I got this truck from my grandmother after my grandfather passed away. I used it for 2 years then put it in the back yard when I bought my 02 Ford Focus. I never had a problem with the truck but had constant problems with the car. I joined the navy a year ago and sold the car because I wouldn't need it. I just got back home and went to my grandmothers house and saw my old truck back there and offered to buy it again from her because it was so great. I only have to replace a battery and after all the years it hasn't been run I started it up and she runs great. I also had a flowmaster exhaust put on her and boy does she purrrr. I love this thing.
Dodge all the way
My dad first owned the 3.9L V6 Dakota Sport and we went on family vacations and he used it for business. My mom also drove it around to and from work (errands too) for years. The Dodge has been through a lot of travels!! It now has 205,000 miles on it and is running wonderful!! Only normal fixes had to be done. Great truck. Now I own the truck and enjoy it a lot!
Good Truck - Would probably buy another
Have had this truck since it was new - regular maintenance schedule and oil changes - 2 transmission problems (Total approx. $1000) in it's lifespan.
Great Truck!
I absolutely wish I would have just fixed the minor mechanical issues on my 95 instead of trading it for my 06 which was an expensive rip off compared to my 95. My Dakota had the 3.9L v6 which is by no means a powerful motor but it ran well and it proved reliable. The exterior styling and overall build quality of the 1995 Dakota and the 1992-1996 Dakotas in general to me is better than any of the newer iterations of the Dakota. The interior was plush with options for a 1995, and it actually had a good amount of storage space in it unlike my 2006 which is probably the most useless ext cab ever built. The 1995 Dakota is a good truck, I highly recommend if you are looking for a used truck.
great truck
I had bought the truck with 114,600 miles on it, and now have a lil over 153,900. All I had to do with it was replace the battery, and the radiator. Though now it is due for an alignment. Overall though this truck has had the snot worked out of it by me, and the previous owner. It is fitted with the Reese 3/4 hitch so it can manage 7500 lbs though I wouldn't attempt this without making sure yours is properly prepared for it. Mine has built with the tow package and 42rh trans giving it the towing ability. Off road the truck doesn't know the word stuck and has pulled other trucks w/trailers out of soft sand with a/t tires. I'm debating about fixing up this one, or getting another, ill probably fix
Another Dodge lemon... What a pc of POO!
I got this truck NEW & have always had problems with it. The motor runs good but has no power whatsoever (this is the "MAGNUM" v6 model). Having a towing package on this thing is a waste of money. The thing is slower than slow. A Geo metro 3-banger can outrun this turtle. My 4 cylinder Sentra looks and feels like a race car compared to this truck! But that's the good news. I now have 122,000 miles on it, and I am yet again about to put in another transmission! This will be transmission #7! No, I don't pull trailers. No, I don't go off-roading! No, I don't haul heavy loads! All this truck is used for is to drive to and from work! I baby the heck out of it! What a pc of dog poo!!!
i love my truck
i bought my 95 sport extd cab with 219,xxx on it from a good friend of mine who had owned it for 8 years and for its age and miles it is a great truck i have had it for 2 1/2 months and have put 5,000 on her so far and the only problem i have had is the master cylinder just went out oh well it cost me $50 to replace since i have had the truck it has not let me down the 3.9 has pulled everything i have put in it and behind it on my 14 ft double axle trailer has good power and rides pretty good for a small truck although i plan on beefing up the suspension and putting some bigger tires on the 215/75/15 ain't good enough for me
Great Truck
I loved this truck from day one. I need to write a review now that I had to get a diffrent one. My family grew. Where can you find a truck that gets 18-19mpg at 85mph & get 17.5mpg pulling 1500lbs and I've put about 1700Ibs in the bed and still have alot of power if the ac is on? This Dakota you'll find it.The 318 I think is was ahead of it's time. It is one my favorite motors I have ever had. The 5 speed manual is great as well. This truck handles just great. It went up against every task I asked of it and never broke down. It was very compfortable as well. I rode in a Galant and when I got back in my truck it was like sitting on the couch again. I truly loved this truck.
My 95 Dakota..a real trooper!
I was leary of buying this truck being a 95 with 198K miles but the 318 has been a work horse! I just cracked 210K this weekend and nothing outside normal maintenance has came up. I haul cars almost every weekend and the truck has been outstanding for what I need.
over th log haul
This truck was very reliable and the torque in the motor made it fun to drive. Currently have 238000 miles. Just purchased a 2003 quad cab. The 3.9 liter is not as torquey do to the added weight and larger tires. The 16 inch tires cause the motor to 250-350 less rpm and the sweet spot in 4th gear is around 75 mph.
great car
for me this has been and continues to be an excellent vehicle. The interior room is great, and it has performed with only minimal maintenance. It would recommend it without reservation
Good Workhorse (Needed de-fleeing)
I purchased this truck new and added the extended 7 year 100000 mile warranty. Good thing I did because lots of bugs needed fixing. Some of the items I had problems with was transfer case (Replaced 5 times). Transmission leak had gasket replaced 5 times. Drive shaft joint breakage. Tailgate misaligned, cruise control quit working. Replaced radio 5 times. Despite all these problems I have had the truck 11 years and it now has over 182k miles on it. With a recent tune up on the hwy I was able to get 19mi to the gallon hwy (Over 300mi on a tank of gas). That is good for this truck. Overall I have enjoyed this vehicle because it does deliver the power when needed.
Good Pickup
I bought it brand new and besides a new waterpump and a radiator, it has been wonderful. I own a farm and this truck out hauls any Chevy or Ford twice its size. The 318 engine has a lot of power. This truck will really move. Keep the oil changed and this baby will purr! Dodge is all about performance.
A Good Work-Horse
Bought this truck used (97,000)- it was used by commercial plumber, and saw heavy use. I like the performance and gneral feel. However, there is water in the oil, and it's so bad that the dipstick is rusting away - no joke. The engine is very noisy, and I had to replace the headliner when it fell down. Very solid body. Airbag Control causes radio AM to not work.
Good, solid, mid-sized truck
V6, Auto, Purchased with 120k miles, now just past 200k. I have performed regular maintenance. Good solid truck that I have used to tow, commute, travel, and frequently pull my buddies trucks out of the snow banks/mud. Currently on loan to my sister who has discovered that she likes driving it far more than she ever expected. It is finally starting to show rust (darn it). Replaced since purchase: pitman arm, timing chain, water pump, alternator, heater blower, radio, windshield, brakes, shocks, exhaust, all fluids, plugs, wires, coil, and window motor.
Best Truck
I bought this as a lot leftover in 1996. It has 193 thousand miles on it. Never broke down on me. Lots of power and torque. Exterior still shines. Well worth the money. The only thing it has ever had done was oil changes and the condenser replaced, nothing else. Most miles were around town. The only thing hat I dont like about it is fuel consumption. Interior is built to last forever. This truck will never die

Great dodge truck
Looks great drives great. 4 on the floor always reliable. Will last forever and am planning on keeping it and fixing whatever goes wrong. Interior is stylish. See lots on the road out west that are nice and clean. Bit of paint fade but that’s not a problem. Never had any serious issue and only have done basic maintenance. Would highly recommend dodge trucks.
Buyer Beware
I had to replace V8 engine at 80,000. Speedometer broke, cruise control quit, tailgate wont close, rear end drag, back brake drag. Trans had already been replaced. I finally traded the truck and lost my XXX. I also had a 1996 Dakota and it also had similar problems. I will never, never, never own a Dodge or Chrysler again and I recommend you do the same.
