Perfect carr for both Electric and Hybrid driving...

I absolutely love my Volt…I was looking for a car that could get me to work and back on all electric power, but still have the ability to do road trips without relying on the battery. The Volt is perfect for my daily 40 mile round trip commute to work. I charge the car at home and have plenty of power to drive to work and back. The Volt is fun to drive and has plenty of power to maneuver the LA freeways. In full Hybrid mode, I'm averaging about 38 to 40 actual miles per gallon, which is good for a lead foot like me. I rarely use gas though, but if I do it's on the weekend or trips out of town. The car keeps track of your gas and EV mileage separate, so it's easy to calculate.

My current overall milage is 69.8 mpg and climbing. I expect my overall milage will be over 100 mpg after a few more months of driving. With my current commute of 56 miles daily I typically drive 42 miles on a charge, then it switches to gas, seamlessly, for the remaking 14 miles. It's range is well over 300 miles per tank. It currently takes 10 hours to charge the car using the charger that comes with the car. It plugs in to any standard wall outlet. It cost about $1.50 to charge completely. You can buy a 220 volt charger that cuts charging time down to less than 4 hours. I paid $31,900 -$7,500 Fed tax rebate - $1,500 Ca rebate = $22,900 + tax/ license. That is a total steal.

So is it a good value? Yes! It feels solid as a Mercedes and almost as luxurious (no electric seats). It’s fun to drive like a Mazda 3. It costs like a Corolla, after factoring in tax incentives and fuel savings (10 years ownership). The Volt has a unique character and more than skin deep beauty that makes owners proud and car enthusiasts rethink what’s possible.

My son recently bought a new Tesla which prompted me to consider an EV. The Tesla is fantastic, but it's out of my price range and I don't really need the 270 miles of range offered by the Tesla. I researched the current crop of EV's quite extensively and decided the Volt made the most sense for me. I am retired and generally drive less than 30 miles a day. I ended buying a 2014 equipped with just the heated seat option. I didn't want NAV, Camera's, and other high tech options. Been driving for 50 plus years and have gotten really good at using my rear and side mirrors! The Federal Tax Credit, State rebate, and liberal Dealer discount was too good to pass up.

Bought a used 2014 in Jan 18'. The car had 43K miles when I purchased. We have put 27k miles on it. My husband used it as his daily driver for a few mos and put most of the miles on it. He hated the car but loved only spending 40$ a month on gas (could charge- stage II charger at work). He is a tall man, said it is the most uncomfortable NON-sports car he's been in. He is in the car industry so I take that with a lot of weight. I am a small woman so it doesn't bug me. We have taken the car on road trips (300 miles) and have driven it for a day while moving out of state (500 miles). It is everything I want! But, in the time owning the car I have had the seal on the oil pan replaced as well as 2 window regulators (both front windows) and have repaired the back hatch latching mechanism myself. I am glad I opted in for the extended warranty!!! It seems the windows on this car are a problem as I was told by A CHEVY SALESMAN! My driver's side window is now making the same noise (AGAIN) that led up to the window dropping (both of the ones I had work done on made this noise as well in the weeks prior, so I am anticipating this window will give out on me again soon.) I got over the large columns that obstruct your view while driving, you just have to look and move your head a bit. I can deal with keeping the car plugged in to warm the interior before I leave. I'd love it if I could convert the windows to ol' crank windows! It is such a basic car, why not? I love my car but this window thing will be the end of this car for me. I am now wary of even buying a newer Volt/Bolt as I have been told this is a problem with these cars. I'd love it if Chevy put the technology into another platform, giving more options.

Volt uses passenger cabin air conditioning system to cool battery pack. If car air conditioning has a leak (Mine had an evaporator leak) the car will not allow you to use the car in any mode until the air conditioning is repaired. You are stuck on the side of the road! $2,000.00 A/C repair in the middle of the winter to get the car to run again!

I took it in for the battery software update. Ever since it consistently gets less miles per charge. Gets around 42 now vs 48 before. Otherwise no problems. Still love the car. With teslas going up 6000 it’s easy to just think about replacing the battery vs buying a new car. It’s winter here in Minnesota. Had the first day the engine turned on because we had not driven on the ice for 30 days. Luckily it was also below 15 degrees and the computer required the engine to run because of the temperature. Knock on wood still no problems. I haven’t taken it in for the battery software update for fear they will screw something up. Before it got cold we were consistently getting 48 miles per charge which is very good for a 7 year old battery. Also have not yet replaced the 12 volt battery yet. I have checked the voltage and it’s still in the green range. Hoping that the new congress will redo the ev credit with gm and Tesla. If they don’t I will keep the volt. We are back to summer in Minnesota and just got the most miles per charge ever 53 miles! Yesterday started out with an estimated 51 miles. No maintenance issues except I just received a recall notice for a software upgrade re the battery. I was disappointed that they quit making the volt but look forward to keeping ours another year before we get a new electric. Would prefer a plug in/gas with about 70 miles range but will likely make the leap to all battery with 250 miles range. In winter that is likely only 150 miles. We have now had our Volt for three years. We have loved it. It now has over 250 liftime mpg. We mostly use it with electric so the ICE engine has not been used much. For awhile I was very intent to increase the lifetime MPG to over 250. I did not like the car to use the ICE and noted it below in my early review. Now that I have reached my 250 mpg goal, I don't care if the engine runs. The car actually heats up much faster in the winter vs a normal car because you are getting not only the heat from the engine, but 6-7 KW of electric power. I have the rear camera option and in the winter the camera picks up alot of blur from road moisture because of where its positioned. My Honda Odyssey rarely has the same problem. I definately want to get another Volt. I like most of the enhancements for the second generation but wish that they would have kept the extra back window. I have had our 2014 Volt for just about a month. Its been very impressive. My only disappointment is that in very cold weather, below 15 degrees, the gas engine is programmed to come on instead of just using the battery all the time. As I have gotten to know more about the car, it continues to amaze me with all of its technological features, from the remote start from your smartphone, to the car turning the seat heaters on when you sit down, and automatically reducing the seat heater temp when they warm up. I like being able to drive an electric car, with no range worries that is sharp looking and truly fun to drive.

Just added our second new Volt (2014) after enjoying our 2013 for one year. We were skeptical on buying the 2013 at first, having previously owned 6 Prius models (including the Plug-In). Many of the reviews claim the car is no better than a Prius, but this is ridiculous. The Volt is more comfortable, faster and has amazing technological features that still aren't available on the Prius. The dealer service network is also better. We drive on electric all week and use the car for 250+ mile trips on weekends with an overall average of 194 mpg, consistently. No Prius could come close to this. (Exact same use with the Prius Plug-In netted a consistent 63 mpg.)

Why would you buy a Prius?

This car is a great deal and a great car. Here is the math: $34,000 price, minus $10,000 back (CA pays $2500 of that), minus the gas savings which is about $100/month for me (all-electric mode means I often go 900 miles on a tank of gas and electric power is equivalent to $1.50/"gallon"). So after 10 years this car will have been far more economical than a Prius. Hybrids always use some gas (47 mpg-ish) but the Volt uses none for the first 40 miles (100 mpg equivalent). After that it gets at least 37 mpg.

I just crossed the 40,000 odometer reading on my Volt. With my average mpg being 84, I've saved approximately $5500 in gas over my previous 24 mpg SC430 Lexus . Said differently, at this rate, the Volt's gas savings alone will have paid for the car in 5 years. Add this to the HOV Lane sticker and great reliability, and I have to say this is the best car I've owned (and its the first American car I've had).
