What A Trip It's Been

Second car ever, lots of ups and downs. Lots of little things, my electrical problems alone have been a total nightmare, the $2K price tag for the AC repairs, the extra-expensive profile tires, the fact that you can't replace ANYthing easily... but I'm trying not to complain here, and here's why. Overall, I bought it used with 36k miles, 5 years later I just passed 265,000! Eaten probably $5,000 in various repairs, and I never did get around to fixing that AC. But it fits my family of 4, strollers and luggage, and I still marvel driving around on FL roads and watching it get 38 MPG. Oh, and the stock stereo has killer bass! Quarter million miles on the original trans & still going!

15 Months After Purchase

I rated this car highly when I first bought it but after 15 months of ownership, the honeymoon is over. The build quality of this vehicle is horrid. I have been a loyal buyer of domestic cars and my last two purchases from GM (both 2006 vehicles) are dogs. The HHR has been in the shop for a myriad of problems from front brake rotors, electrical issues, wiper problems, injector replacement, pulling, among others. The metal is paper thin and susceptable to dents. It is a fun car to drive when the check engine light is not on (which is about 50% of the time). My dealership has been great but I can not say the same for the engineers that built this piece of junk.

I too was having problems with standing water in the floorboards. Easy fix.....the sunroof has 2 drain tubes that run down thru the door post, we blew these hoses out (full of nasty black debris). Once they were cleared out I have not had 1 problem with water again. I am so happy with my car. This car gets great gas mileage and performs great. So happy we figured out the problem.

I just bought my HHR in March of 2012, and I love it! I get great gas mileage! A full tank will last me a month! I'm 17, and will be going off to college, soon- and this will be GREAT. It had 90,000 miles on it when I bought it- and expect it to last long! They are great cars, and very reliable!

A Swingin' Ride

I love this car! I would buy another in a trice if Chevy still made it, but they don't! Easy to drive, huge storage capabilities for a so-called "small" car, sharp-looker and a great color (orange) makes it easy to spot in a parking lot. GM classifies the HHR as a truck - I call it a swingin' ride! This car was driven by tall and taller people and still had plenty of leg-room for all of us with long legs. We put on 60,000 + miles the first year traveling all over MN almost every weekend as President of the MN Jaycees but only about 10,000 a year after that. Easy to park and able to maneuver into small spots - also an excellent tow behind a camper. A unique car and fun to drive. I'll miss it!

Why doesn't anyone know what is wrong with my car

I purchased a used 2006 Chevrolet HHR in 2013. I have not experienced trouble at all until a couple of days ago. I was on the highway coming home from work and my odometers started jumping, then the warning light that display read "power steering". My steering was ok. My car was "jerking" real bad as I was slowing down and changing gears, each time I would press the gas the car would jerk. Got it home then had my neighbor drive it she is a certified mechanic. No problems during that trip. The next morning I drove it to do some errands no problems until I was almost home same issue just the odometer was not jumping and no "power steering" displayed. no one can figure out this issue, anyone ??

motor seized

We have always had the car serviced at Midway Chevrolet whenever the mileage told us to do that. Monday I was driving it and I went to pass a car. When I went into overdrive there was a "clunk" and I lost the overdrive power. No trouble lights came on so I continued on. The car began to "clunk" whenever I touched the accelerator and then as I drove. (I had to get to a doctor appt.)After the appt. I found a GMC dealer and by that time it was barely running and extremely noisy and the trouble lights were on. The engine had seized and all the oil was gone. I had 141,350 miles on it. We are getting a used engine put in. I thought the engine would last longer. Has this happened to others?

I traded a van for the HHR because of the smaller size and lower access to the rear cargo area. The car runs great and gets good mileage, 23 mpg or so in almost exclusively stop and go driving, and approximately 34 mpg on a 1000 mile vacation trip. The driver info center is handy, showing all the necessary numbers at the push of a button.

Worst car I’ve ever owned

This has been the worst car I’ve ever owned. I have put more money into repairs than I did buying it. It constantly leaks and has sitting water in the floorboards (a common issue). In addition, it is the WORST in midwestern winters. Super low suspension and poor handling make for horribly dangerous snow driving. Do NOT get this car!!

We have owned our HHR for almost a year (this replaced our Saturn VUE). Its comfort level and fun to drive rating are high for us. It is black and our freinds refer to it as a hearse. It is anything but a hearse. Neat looking, lots of after market items available to customize. This is a leased car. We may wind up buying because of the style and comfort level. Highly recommend this to anyone. Just plain cool to be in and drive.

I bought my car in 2007 with 15,000 miles on it. It had one owner be fore i purchased it. I would never in my life own another Chevrolet HHR. The door handles breaks easily, and just recently I was going down the road and i was accelerating and the car started going slower and slower. I had to pull to the side of the road to see the problem, and much to my surprise there is no dip stick for the transmission. It has to be brought into a shop to be checked. But how could I bring it, it will not go into drive, only reverse.

Bought April, 2012. When bought it had 50,432 on it, Just short of 2 years later it's at just over 90k. Average over 20k miles a year. The clutch still feels new and the 2.4 Ecotec hasn't skipped a beat! All this said, I have done the following: -Thermostat replaced (factory installed coolant caused premature breakdown of OEM part. (known issue) - Fixed broken sunroof wind deflector (common issue) - Replaced/upgraded front rotors (OEM known to warp), upgraded to ceramic pads. Total cost, about $230 to fix, all easily done at home. The one thing I will need to have done is suspension bushings. They're shot and make the car creak horribly in cold weather.

I have read the other reviews, and I must disagree with a few of them. I purchased my daughter's car a year ago, and so far so good. Excellent on gas, drives well, and very comfortable. She has not had one single issue with her car yet. So judging on by the perfomance and reliability of her car, I would definetly purchase another one but a higher model. I simply love this car! My daughter (Nera) is into big boy cars such as: Hummers, Chevy's, etc so when I first got this car-she had 2 get use 2 it. But now I can say we both love the quality of the HHR LS's....

Purchased my HHR last month in spite of the "expert" reviews. One consumer review I read said to ignore the reviews and buy the car.......I agree. No "vague steering", weak braking or any of the other complaints voiced by the pros. Great fuel economy and acceptable power......I'm sure a turbo will be forthcoming. I've owned a PT Cruiser and this is far superior.......the stereo is amazing for any price vehicle. Didn't expect that/pleasant surprise. I'm a retired cop.......I've taken and taught pursuit driving courses and defensive driving classes......this car is a winner and is well worth a look if you're shopping in this price range.

my 2006 chevy HHR is leaking on the passenger side. The water is coming in from the air filter that is located under the hood. below the right windshield wiper. There is a big pocket and a air filter there so when it rains it runs right in under the dashboard. I read that many other people are having the same trouble. Chevy needs to make this a recall or they are going to lose hard working peoples business. Just one person will tell hundreds of people. If there are enough complaints maybe they will do something about this major problem. I went to [violative content deleted] , Still waiting for a response . Also read they are terrible in the snow even with studs on them.

Love this car! Have owned it 3 weeks now. We've taken 2 day trips in FL and averaged 32.3 MPG! In town average is 29 MPG. Compfy, quiet ride, room enough for all our stuff,& everyone crowds around to ooh and aah over it. Even my 80 year old parents can get in and out without help and our 29 yr old son is drooling over it. Cool styling, comfort, quiet, roomy, versitile, and good gas mileage. We got lots of options which really enhance the experience. Sunroof, OnStar, satellite radio, running board etc. Never thought I'd want all that, but now I can't imagine not having them. You do have to use 91 octane gas which we achieve by alternating fill-ups at the 1/2 full point w/mid and high test.

The vehicle is very attractive and urban design. Great alternative to the PT Cruiser design. Fun to drive when is not in the garage. Great fuel mileage on long hauls drive 1300 mile trips often and only use 3 tanks of gas for the whole trip. When it comes to reliability and performance it becomes a different story. I purchase new vehicles often about every 2-3 years and this will probably be my last Chevrolet purchase. Chevrolet customer service is great but if they cant build a reliable car then its not for me to purchase would recommend Toyota, Honda or Saturn.

I have owned this car for a little over 2 years and have less than 60,000 miles on it and the power steering has gone out on it. I called GM and their response was that it was no longer under warranty and they were not responsible for it. They offered a50% discount on the almost $900 repair it would take to fix it and only gave me 90 days to fix it. Do not buy this car it is a piece of junk. The Sun roof broke at 37,000 miles, the in dash console broke at around the same time. It cost a lot of money on maintenance and is not worth your money, even GM won't stand behind this piece of junk!

The appearance caught my attention first. The test drive really sold me. I had driven several small cars in the shopping process, (all I have ever owned were larger cars). The HHR is fun to drive and a fairly comfortable and quiet ride. I would have liked to have a center console with storage. But other than that I really like the car.

This car was absolutely the best car I have ever owned. I could not believe the value packed into this car. There is no one out there that can go head to head with the HHR on price, performance, you name it. I sold it recently to buy a Chrysler Crossfire, to be honest I wish I had my HHR back. Don't get me wrong the Crossfire is awesome, but with the 18" rims and 40 series Nittos that HHR handled as well as any car I have ever driven. I honestly can't say much of anything negative except they need more cup holders for the driver. I had the 175hp version of the 4cyl. engine. I think back, my 1984 Mustang GT had 175hp. I have to laugh now looking back. I want the SS!

It scoots just fine. I can hardly wait till GM has a few years to get the engine upgrades right. I will take mine in white with a Turbo!

I love driving my 2006 HHR. It comes with many standard features that on most cars you would pay extra. My problem since I have owned it include having to get keys reprogrammed, radio making noise when not on and would pop when turning on (had to be reprogrammed), had to get gear shift replaced because not unlocking doors when put out of gear and now in shop twice for oil leak (replaced gasket but still leaking a puddle of oil when sitting. I have 29,000 miles on my vehicle.

Pick up and ride quality are good. Interior design is adequate, but irritants are a dime a dozen. Where's the shift selector indicator ? Buzz in the fan at 1? Wind noise at 80 kmh left hand side in mirror ? And on and on. GM engineers missed the boat on the interior ergonomics. Even the Koreans have a much more ergonomic interior. The seats are uncomfortable on long hauls. Steering wheel belongs on an 18 wheeler. No hand grips at 3 passenger doors. No manual control of dash lights. That stupid light sensor should be shot.

I've had my HHR for over a year now, and while it's fun to drive, i've had no shortage of problems, namely ongoing electrical problems with the signal lights, windshield seal leak, leak in windshield causing failure of heating system, paint chipping along bottom and rear, deprogramming of key/ignition, signal light failure, occasional popping noise when the radio is off, sticky first and second gear. That being said, it's a very unique and fun car. I've put 18" wheels on, making it sporty and quick handling. Stiff suspension, much like a sports coupe, especially with larger wheels on. Gas mileage is great, about 25 mpg in city/rush hour/stop and go traffic.

We were at first very excited to purchase this attractive and different vehicle. It was fun to drive and my first Chevy purchase. Shortly after, began multiple warranty problems. We have had an ac compressor go out; a hub bearing replaced; a shifter replaced; and a huge water leak through the cowl seal. Cosmetically, the interior can't withstand even minor use without dirt showing; cheap carpeting and fabrics. The railboard rubber came unglued and buckled. The paint chips easily. The radio pops, even with the upgraded Pioneer model. The third break light fried. I really like to drive the car for the exterior looks, but it isn't a reliable vehicle for a commuter who needs to use it everyday.

I bought my HHR last year, and love everything about it. It is great on gas, and has a lot of room to haul things around. I bought it since I have 2 kids that play soccer, and it was voted the safest car on the road, in fact my insurance went down over $600 for the year! If that isnt reason enough to buy it then let me add that it is comfortable and roomy on the inside. The outside style is awesome, I love when people stop me in parking lots to ask me about the performance and things like that. Trust me, I would not want to drive anything else.

It is fun to drive and I average about 30 miles per gallon. I don't mind the window buttons on the center console as I haven't had power windows before, so I am not used to them being on the door. At first the roof light that shines on the center console bothered me, but I got used to it pretty quickly.

GM has hit a grand slam home run with the HHR. My buying criteria were simple: comfort, fuel economy and air. HHR is exceptional on all 3 counts. The front seats are among the best in the industry. At 7.7l/100km mixed driving I'm more than sold. Add in the reliability of the Ecotec power train and the Getrag transmission; the roominess; the retro styling; the lower cost of repair (it costs a lot money to ship parts from Asia); the kart" like handling; and the HHR becomes a Honda beater! GM has taken stock of the market and taken straight aim at the Asian imports, whacking Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda right up the side of the head. Well done GM!

Although I like the overall looks and performance of my HHR, I am totally disappointed with the various electrical issues I had to put up with during the cold weather months this past winter. Issues with HVAC lights blinking on and off, battery going dead three different times for no reason, rear wiper motor have to be replaced for intermittent operation, windows that freeze and will not open after car has been warmed up for 45 minutes and last but not the very leaset, snow and ice build up at the front door which rubs the paint when opening the door. With all this said, I plan on replacing this car after driving for just 10,000 miles and I was a loyal GM owner for over 30 years.

It was my wife's decision to buy this car. She purchased the 2006 Red Spring Edition package. As we also have a Trailblazer, I felt that she could have the HHR and I'd keep driving the TB. I've never been able to convince myself that I could get by with 4 cylinders having grown up in the muscle car age group. But, we've parked the TB in the garage and have driven the HHR 99% of the time! I was wrong about owning a 4 banger as this car has proven to me time and time again. Don't settle for the 2.2 engine, to sluggish! Buy the 2.4 with 175hp! It is quite zippy! Our HHR still has people turning their heads when we drive by and others stop us to ask questions about it. Buy one! You'll like it!

Was looking a PT but when these came out I was sold. Reminded me of my 1951 pickup I regret selling. HRR is not a sports car but who cares. She handles good enough for me and I have owned 3 Vettes! Bought it with 6000 miles on her and she was loaded and got a deal so there is no negative here. I see more and more of these on the road and could not be happier with my purchase.

"Her Hignesses Ride" is what I call it! I love it, drives like a sports car, works like an SUV, eats like a compact, great gas mileage! It's like a computer on wheels. Love them gadgets and read outs! Love the solid feel, the way it hugs the road. I feel safe and secure in it. Only fault is the center console design, they kinda screwed up the cup holders, but I knew that going into it. If you want to use the cup holder, you might as well forget using the arm rest. But, all the other great features out way that.

I've had lots of cars and I think this may be my favorite one so far. I got the bright orange metallic and I love it! Interior design, outside appearance, drivability, acceleration. So much fun.

Fun to drive. Everyone asks what it is and I love telling them. I wanted a car with fenders and this had it. I like the PT Cruiser but it was way too small. This is everything I wanted and needed!

Even though we also own a Mercedes, I still love and miss driving my little blue HHR every day and that is why we decided to keep it. It's fun to drive, has tons of cargo space and gets great gas mileage. There are a few things Chevy needs to add but overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed owning this vehicle and look forward to more years of great use.

I haven't had this car long but from the time that I have had it I believe it will give me years of fun driving. The styling is masterful but the engine could use more umph. The vehicle is well built. Actually put together like a Swiss watch, and it runs like a Timex! I have the 5 speed Getrag manual and I wished that I had the automatic. However this transmission is very good. I would like to add an STS Turbo if I could find one. I would recommend this vehicle to any and everyone.

I have owned my HHR for one month. I am amazed with just about every feature of this car. It rides so smooth, handles well and gets fantastic mileage (around 27-32 mpg) overall. It has great power, I got the 2.4 litre motor with automatic transmisson. My HHR is equipped with the 16" wheels, which ride fantastic. I am more concerned with ride over performance. I drive about 20,00 miles a year and can't think of a better vehicle for what I do. The overall build quality of this car amazes me. It feels so solid for such a small car. The paint quality is fantastic and the interior is very tastefully done. I would highly recommend this car to anyone.

What a great car, mine is an LT1 with the auto 2.4. So far 25 MPG city 32 HWY. This thing simply rides like a large car, smooth and quiet. I took a PT for a test drive and it's not in the same class as the HHR. Mine cost $17600 MSRP was $19500, for this price its a super car. Don't pay more than $18500 for an HHR if you do you got ripped off. The 3 dealers I went to in Omaha all dropped the MSRP by at least $1500. Sure I had to order it, but it only took 7 weeks. IMHO the $21000-$24000 HHR's are a huge waste of money.

I thought these were funny looking cars till I saw one at the Philly auto show. Then I realized how hot they are. I had a Focus from the first year they sold them, so I was nervous buying the debut HHR. In the year that I've owned it, I haven't had a single problem. I love driving it, the handling is great, and I love the style. A very reliable, fun to drive, comfy car.

Over all Ilove My HHR. But with any new car there are some bugs to be worked out. And yes I bought the extended warranty so all of the bugs can be worked out by my dealer. I feel it's a small price to pay. I was one of the first to own the Chevy HHR and since then I've seen a lot more every day.

The car itself is a pleasure to drive. I have always been a Chevy girl, all V8. This is the first 4cyl car I have owned and let me tell you, it has gusto, of course not as much as a Silverado or a 69 Malibu, however, it serves its purpose, especially with fuel prices. This is my second one, first one went into repair shop becuase I could not get it out of park, needless to say, they were not able to fix it, after 3 months, so the lemon law applied and I was able to get a new one without a problem. Why? you ask, because i loved the car so much. My current car has not had any major problems with the exception of some radio stations not coming in clear, other than that, I'm satisfied!

The retro design is appealing to this old man with desires formed in the 1960's. The 2400 engine is amazingly responsive. The transmission has a lot to do with the responsiveness. Both are smooth without the power mower sound. The entry and seating are suitable for this arthritic. We use it for short runs and errands. For journies longer than a few hundred miles, the crampedness and the small driver's legroom would become cumbersome. With 20,000 miles we had to have the rotors turned as it shimmied violently at high speed braking. I understand this has been a problem with other owners. We will see how this plays out. Being rural it is nice to have nearby GM service.
