I hadn't owned a GM vehicle since the early 90's and now I remember why. I bought the top of the line Equinox in July 2018. After the first 4 or 5 months it developed an annoying vibration at speeds about 30 mph, felt like driving on a bumpy road at lower speeds, a vibration at freeway speeds. Took it to the dealer, asking them to check wheel balance, suspension components for loose items, or maybe a failing shock. They old me it's because of the nine-speed transmission shifting into high gear causing the engine to lug. I verified for myself by manually keeping the transmission in a lower gear (and thus a higher RPM) the problem still existed. Took it to the dealer again, explaining this. They checked wheel balance (nothing else) and said it was within spec. Being suspicious, I took it to an independent shop. They verified balance was within spec. Grew more unhappy with the ride every time I drove it and decided to take my losses, and traded in for a new Honda Passport. Much better vehicle in all aspects. Trade-in value was awful, lost almost half its original value. After this experience I doubt I'll ever get another GM vehicle.

Better Than Expected

I'm a diesel guy and currently have 5 of them: Equinox, Jetta, Q5, F350, 300SD. A friend in the business did a nation-wide search and got me this one cheap after I rented a gas one waiting for my Passat diesel to get repaired after a collision. I loved the utility and driving qualities of the Equinox, particularly the seating position and visibility. When I found out a diesel version existed I had to have it. Bought with 20k miles, I've added 6k in 3 months. Sold the Passat. Handling is spot on. Love the comfort level. Prefer it to the wife's Q5. Controls are intuitive. I love the vented seats, power lift gate, remote start, heated steering, cargo capacity. Overall about 38mpg. 33 in city, 39 at 80mph Idaho to Las Vegas twice, 46mpg on 70mph highways. This is better than the Passat which is not AWD and has less capacity. Interior materials are better than I had expected. I am very pleased. I changed the oil myself without much hassle, once I realized I would need to loosen a cross-member for the filter to clear. A couple of gripes: the stock Michelin tires which need to be replaced soon, which may be an issue with alignment or just this style of Michelin. I'm going to put some SUV all-season tires on so I can wander the desert. Next, all the messages and auto-start/stop that I can't turn off. I managed to turn off a lot of the nanny stuff but not all of it. I do like the lane change warning lights on the side mirrors when in the city. I am happier with this used car than I have been with any new car I've ever purchased. My '17 diesel Colorado was good utility-wise, but had quality issues, making me leery of GM overall. We will see how this thing lasts and I'll update if I detect any problems. I encourage others to do so as well since there is very little out there for research.

Chevy Settles for the Field Goal-Again

My wife and I are both tall and large so our choices in vehicles has much to do with ingress, egress and do we fit. Our previous SUV, a 2015 Equinox had been a very good vehicle, even surviving two accidents involving fairly major front end damage without developing a single squeak or rattle. Also, in 33k miles the only unscheduled service was to repair a sticky door lock switch. The 2.4L 4 cylinder was adequate, delivered 28-30 MPG highway but just 21 MPG around our small town. When our lease was up, we decided on another AWD Equinox LT with the base 1.4L turbo 4 clay and 6 speed auto. My review is based on 5,100 miles and six months of ownership. Improvements over the previous generation are many.Much better outward visibility and sight lines enhanced by the blind spot monitoring system. Nearly perfect control and display layout. GM kicks butt in this area of this design. Better sound system. Much better climate control system. Better steering feel and a tighter turning circle. Bigger, better side mirrors. Great brakes. The power lift tailgate. The small turbo 4 has very good low end power and is generally up to the task. However the auto stop system for the engine is very annoying if you are driving in stop and go traffic. Luckily, it is easy to defeat- just put the shift control in manual and select 6th gear. The transaxle will still function in fully automatic mode but the engine will not shut off. So far we are seeing 25 MPG around town but just 28 MPG on the highway. The biggest issue with the small 1.4L engine is its lack of top end power! No guts at all above 5,000 RPM which makes passing at highway speeds take a LONG time. If you drive on interstates most of the time, opt for the 2.0L , no wait, bad idea since it will raise the price by several thousand dollars and the Equinox is in no way worth that much money. My biggest complaints are the seats and the reductions in interior space! The front seats are way too small, especially the lower seat cushion. No thigh support at all. Also, there is about 2 inches less leg room than the 2015 which is a big deal to anyone over 6 feet tall. The back passengers get less room too. Worst of all, the rear seat no longer adjusts. In out 2015, I moved the back seat forward and could haul my wife’s wheelchair without folding the seat backs. The 2018 requires the rear seats to be folded flat to fit a wheelchair thereby making it a two passenger SUV. WHY did GM reduce the interior length while not reducing the overall length of the SUV. Stupid. Our particular Equinox is one of a group delivered with infotainment displays which do not respond to the dash light dimmer properly. The display is always super bright, blinding the driver at night! I complained to Chevy via their Facebook page and was finally directed back to my dealer for a software update. The update allows the infotainment display to dim about 50 percent. Better, but it is still too bright on dark, rainy nights and is a real safety issue. We have also experienced some issues with the engine stumbling and making odd vibrations from time to time. Also, the drivers side front suspension makes loud booming noises from time to time and the car pulls to the left all the time. So far the dealer service department can’t find any issues. I’m betting the upper strut bearing is defective and will fail before it hits 10K.

solid, could use a little more refinement

tet drove a base model with 2.0 turbo. Chassis is good, nice ride and responsive handling, steering and brakes are responsive with good feel. Transmission was smooth, and the engine powerful, though a touch trashy when pushed hard.A little more road noise than I might have expected but not too objectionable. Biggest drawback was the seats, both driver and passenger front were too tight across the lower ribs. My wife and I are both in shape athletes, so we were surprised by how the side bolsters felt. Seat bottoms were fine for us, but larger people may find them intrusive. Salesman suggested that the leather seat models are a little less restrictive, had a quick seat in them and he might be right. I immediately noticed that the steering wheel profiling is a little different, so different seats are certainly plausible
