2017 Chevrolet Cruze Premier 4dr Hatchback (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

The last year was a bit of a roller-coaster in our lives, and involved selling a bunch of stuff and relocating. Kept one vehicle, sold another (a Porsche Boxster) and I leased a Chevy Cruze Premier hatchback for myself to use daily. Moved to a colder climate and didn't want/need a convertible anymore, and our fully loaded car is SO much nicer than Chevrolets of the past and is amazingly comfortable. Honestly, it's easily as nice as our 2007 BMW 3-series was inside, and handles almost as well, incredibly. The car has been flawless so far, and feels incredibly solid and quiet, especially considering my expectations. Winter driving has also been beyond expectations, even though it's just a front-drive car with all-season tires. Our mileage approaches 40mpg on the highway, although for city driving in cold weather it's been in the low 20s. We test-drove a Cadillac ATS at the dealer with the 2.0L turbo engine, and this car could compete with a VW GTI if that engine were an option (I've had one of those, as well). Update: I'm nearing the end of the lease on this car, and it now has 32,000 miles on it, and it's been nearly perfect. Only trouble I had was with the A/C system, and the dealer ended up replacing the entire system under warranty. Aside from that, it's been standard maintenance. Tires still have some life in them, although I suspect that they're too worn for the lease return requirements. My mileage has actually improved, and typically, I get around 32mpg average on each tank of (regular) fuel. Since Chevy has discontinued the Cruze (after they finally figured out how to make a decent compact car), I'm actually considering buying out the car at the end of the lease. It's hard to find a car with comparable features at anywhere close to the price of this one.

Chevrolet is trying but failing

So I’m an avid Japanese car buyer let it be known. I drive a 8th gen civic coupe with a host of problems but it refuses to quit. We leased a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze LT hatchback because, 1. I come from a Chevrolet family, 2. Chevy upped their game in the style department (exterior not interior) and 3. I had to prove a point knowing damn well it’d fail me early to show my parents Chevy isn’t what they believe it is. Sounds worse than it is. For starters; As a commuter, the Cruze is quiet, efficient and stylish, that being said, the transmission is undefined, the interior is hard plastic as all Chevrolet products are, but it still somehow feels solid. Suspension is awful, hard bumps turn into body rattling earthquakes on dirt roads, thin tires look cool, but as you know offer zero traction help, and no absorption of road defects. Gas mileage was about 28 mpg combined. Radio was meh Sound system is what you’d expect as OEM. The problems; 1. 1100 miles into the lease, oil light came on, returned to Chevy, their world class mechanics forgot to remove old oil filter o-ring. I usually do my own maintenance but as a lease it’s free so let the pros do it, or are they pros? They reported no damage and fixed issue. 2. 2932 miles, engine sputtering, they diagnose as a dirty maf sensor. How? No answer, cleaned it and fixed. 3. 10,300 miles, head gasket failed. 10,300 miles?! My 8th gen civics head gasket is just going and it’s at 292,900 miles, it’s to be expected! But 10,300!!? Bye Chevy. Parents chalked it up to my driving habits. I don’t beat my cars, I simply get to speed faster than their turtle pacing. I meticulously maintain my cars as well, following book and my own experience so problems don’t arise. I traded it back in and am getting a 2012 Camry used, why? Toyota is always the leading consumer reports for a reason. Listen people, not all cars are perfect, maintenance goes a very long way, but problems always happen, they’re mechanical, expect the unexpected. It’ll be okay. Don’t buy Chevrolet Cruze with the turbo engine, Naturally Aspirated is the way too go. Way less problems. Also the 2017 Honda Civic hatchback with the 1.5 turbo engines also have a host of problems, turbo is not the answer, naturally aspirated non turbo is.

Chevy as a business is worse than its product.

TBH, car feature is OK. I got one with the package including upgraded seat and speakers and sunroof for 20k. BUT, the crucial part of the car-its engine- has some stupid problems. When auto-stop kicked in, sometimes the engine won't restart when you lift the brake pedal and apply gas, so basically you are a sitting duck blocking traffic when signal lights turn green, and the guy behind you will start to honk at you because you look like an idiot who focused on playing cell phones and didn't pay any attention to traffic. You HAVE to switch back to P and re-start the car like cold start. This happened to me 5 times already. I didn't even bother to contact the dealer though it is still within warranty, because from all search results online, other people who had this problem all get same answer: can't repeat problem, can't fix. The dealers will just waste your time and make you go through all the inconvenience of not having a car for work for days, until you give up. This is just a huge company showing how disgraceful, greedy and dishonest it can be, after saved by the government using our tax dollars years ago. If anyone knows any class action against Chevy regarding this problem, please let me know at greatgibson@gmail.com and I would love to participate. Shame on you Chevy, I just graduated from school by that time so I could only afford a Cruze, but I was planning to get a camaro (the ZL1) or even corvette in three years. Now? I will never spend 1 more cent on any GM products, and I will inform all my family and friends to avoid them to. Enjoy another bankrupt, dear GM.

Test drive in a 2017 Cruze named Damocles

I've had my 2017 Cruze for just a little over 18 months and now have 27800 miles. Took it on a 25 state road trip after driving it for the first 10 months. I love the agility but I'm disappointed with the auto stop feature, it's a little dangerous if you forget it's there when in a right on red situation. That two second delay catches you off guard and could get you in trouble when timing the approach of other traffic. This feature can lead to a semi-T-Boned accident if you are not careful (so far so good). I think it needs to be removed. It's not saving enough gasoline to risk having an accident and losing your life I always think in terms of harm virus benefit, and if you can't afford to waste two teaspoons of gasoline while waiting at a light or stop sign, you probably can't afford a car in the first place. Anyway, although it's not a rocket out of the gate, I love the mixture of spunk and agility once you're underway. It handled very in the Rocky's , made the twisty turny's fun to play in. Averaged 33 MPG at greater than speed (XXX MPH) and even on terrain. During my road trip I hit all four seasons, from snow in the Rocky's, to heavy rain and cross winds as I navigated the Great Plains. Road Trips allow you to really test drive the car, and it met all of my expectations. BTW, it handled very well at maximum speed 121 MPH ( on flat land and of course you have to be out there by yourself to travel at that speed). If you travel at that speed, look out for those sneaky dips in the road, they come up much faster then you realize or expect. Bottom line, aside from the auto stop feature, I love this car, it really rocks in looks, utility and function, the old fashion wipers are cool too. The way I grade a car is to ask myself, would I buy another one like this. The answer is hell yes.

Other shoppers should know how efficient this car is. It drives very smooth and helps you save gas by putting the vehicle in fuel economy mode. It is honestly the best car I have ever droven. Most importantly other than my new Chevy Cruze being as beautiful as it is, it also makes me feel safe!
