Best car I have ever owned
In my driving life I have owned a Karmann Ghia, Triumph Spitfire, Miata & Porsche 911T, just to name the top ones. Before buying this 7yr old Z3 with only 29k miles by the prior 2 owners, I loved the Porsche the best. Now after driving the Z3 from SC to NM, then up to Portland, down the curvy coast hwy (it really loves curves!) to San Francisco and finally back to SC, I am completely pleased with the handling, comfort, performance (133 mph in the desert!) and reliability. For the maintenance, you really need to find an independent BMW mechanic to keep the oil change costs down (the dealers are a little expensive). Replace the radiator before 100k, the plastic tanks split!
Update of 2002 Review
I wrote an earlier review of the Z3 and mistyped V6 when I knew the 2.5 L engine in the 2.3 model is an inline 6. Anyway, have now put on around 80k miles and this car still drives like new. Just as tight, no rattles or body noises. Great car.

My Roadster
Only really drive it during nice weather. Excellent acceleration and braking. Some cheap parts in the interior but all cars seem to do that nowadays. Sitting position is comfortable but hard getting in and out for 6-footers +. Fabrication and mechanics on this car are primo as is the BWM customer satisfaction program. Gas milage has been consistently 24 mi+. This a fun car and not really meant for day-to-day tasks. Enjoy!!
TURNING 10!
This was my first BRAND NEW Sports Car. She had only 3 miles on her when I drove it out of the dealership. It will be nearly 10 years together now and soon we will part ways! My only favorite times driving this car was on the weekends with the top down! Only because I had more room in the cock pit! It took about FIVE years and thousands of dollars for me to break in this car and keep out of the service department. Two AC compressors, CAMS, Radiator and more.
Quite a ride. Worth the coin.
Bought the car after servicing it for a client for ten yrs. What a great, great car. Reliable, fun, light, well made. I did pop for a Shark Injector plug in performance module. It was WELL worth the money. The M52TU benefited well from the upgrades. In short, fun and rewarding to drive and own.
Wonderful Little Car
As a 'mid-life' crisis car, this vehicle stands out. People acost me everywhere with a 'nice car'. In spite of all that, it's simply a wonderful drive. Find a nice uncrowded country road on a nice day, put the top down and turn up the stereo. This will validate everything about getting it. I've had mine since 2002 (it's 2010 now), and I have no thought of selling it. Stay on top of maintenance (BMW service is expensive), in order to minimize theses costs and maximize utility and fun.
2000 2.3 Z3 Roadster
I have always liked the smooth lines and sleek look of the Z3. Finally bought a 2000 with 21K miles. It's a blast to drive, cornering is fantastic and it has plenty of power to spare.
Have another car
While this car is fun, it needs to visit the dealer about every 6 to 8 weeks, so make sure you have another car to use. So far we've had breaks, new seat belts, plus a host of unknown "service engine soon" requirements for which it needs to go in each time. We are afraid what this will cost us with it comes off warranty.
Driven daily
Front brake pads @75000 miles, at 55000 the water pump went out, dealer fixed it w/o charge. Regular oil changes when the red light comes on, other than that, this has been a reliable, fun to drive car. My wife drives almost daily and only takes my Volvo when it is snowing. Does do better in the show with all season tires and we prefer the all season to performance tires since it goes every day.
2000 Z3 2.3
Bought my 2000 Z3 2.3 Roadster in November 02. Mine is a 5 speed (don't even think about buying this car with an auto transmission, takes the soul right out of a roadster). This car is awsome. It is a blast to drive and gets 2nd looks everywhere. I had some trepidaton at buying a 2.3 model rather than a larger engine model but the 2.3 is plenty for me. If you are considering this car, pull the trigger and join the Z3 family. You can spot us by the gleam in our eye and smile on our face!
Too many times in service
This car was the dream of my life until I owned it. GREAT car to drive, but went in the shop over 20 times in the 2.5 years I owned it with non-engine problems (AC, Power windows, shift knob, clutch, etc). Some problems were the car and some were the dealership. Spent so many days in the shop that I ended up trading it in last week for a NON BMW. No more BMWs for me. It was a sad day when my dream came to an end.
Z3 fun
BMW really hit a niche with the Z3. Fun to go anywhere in this car.
fast lane to the poorhouse
I love love love this car but it is killing me with maintenance costs! Owning this car has been like having two car payments with the inevitable trips to the shop every 6 weeks. But she is solid, nimble, attractive, powerful and above all, fun! She's my dream girl, but sometimes there's a lot to be said for the frumpy, low- maintenance girl next door. If you can afford the upkeep, this car is pure joy.
Classic Sports Roadster
Great summer time fun car. Mine has never seen snow. Never leaves the garage with the soft top up. Either topless or with the hard top when ever going out.
2000 Z3 6 cyl. Manual
Owned my 2000 Z3 Roadster since 2011. It now has 275,000 miles. I'm not a mechanic, but do all the maintenance myself. It is showing some wear but l don't mind. It runs great and it is really fun to drive. I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about buying an inexpensive sports car.
Great Ride
I love driving this car. I really only drive it on pretty days - couldn't stand to see it dirty. I think the car drives great and is so much fun on the open road. I corners great, and has the typical BMW quality. I love the "roadster" look of this car inside and out -- I think the new Z4 looks to much like the Mercedes and doesn't have the same roadster feel.
What more could you want?
Having owned a few british convertibles, this is probably the car they wish they'd made, and the slew of Japanese convertibles just don't have the flair that BMW have injected into this amazing car. Incredible road holding, unfaltering acceleration and striking styling are second to none in this price range. The obsession with the plastic rear window eludes me - true high performance convertible roadsters wear the plastic rear window with pride!
Fun car, but problems, problems
No one can question that the Z3 is an awesome driving machine - pure fun to drive. My problem is that the car spends a lot of time being towed to the dealer for repairs. Three times the throttle assembly has failed, requiring a tow and average of about one week to fix. And now it appears it has happened again. Lemon-law? Tried that - but the problem started after 20K which is beyond lemon-law consideration. In short: BMW has not responded in a professional manor, and this is the worst car experience of my life. No more Beemers for me.
Amazing!
I have enjoyed my Z for a number of years. I love the performance and how it hugs the road. My only complaint would be the heater knob. The wire that adjusts the heat has broke 3 times and is not cheap to fix. Other than this I have not had any problems. I thought about upgrading to a Z4 but I just love the style and reliability of my Z. Great investment! Sweet ride!
Weekend car... Thats all
Update: Seems i am still working on it. Serviced the drive shaft and now the engine mounts are due. After this, i need to fix the interior. Using regular fuel now. Other than the slight knocking, car seems to run fine. Now i have to keep it for few more years since i did all the work and not worth selling Original: Bought a used one 3 years back with 112K. Most of the parts which last a longer than a VW or a Honda, this car needs replacement. I started from the struts, shocks, brakes, complete rear suspension overhaul (bushings, links etc), all fluids, then the DME (engine computer) and then the whole cooling system replacement. Replaced most of the parts and since the steering is not rock solid as the VW that i have with 118K. Also it whines (differential / central bearing) which is really annoying. Spend almost 5K on repair while doing my self and still not done. Except engine and transmission, everything else needs replacement at 100K. Now the car is reliable and can drive, but not silent (the stupid whine of some bearing) and the loose steering. City mpg is like 20+ with premium (with regular also it is same). AC barely cools in Texas summer. 2.5L I 6 engine produces 170hp with 181ft torque which is same as I4 engine of a VW turbo. Big engine, not that fast / high in specs. It sounds nice, looks cool. That's all. If you know how to fix cars, this car is for you. It can last like 300k. Engine (except the VANOS seals and VCG), has been rock solid. Also the transmission. Just like all the BMW's, anything else is not reliable. It is a fun car (not so much for 0-60).

A dream come true
I'm finally a BOND girl! After 8 long years of wait, this is the ride of my life! The DSC, oh my and thank God, corrects my mistakes when going a bit too fast around the corners. The 2.3 barely keeps me out of traffic court! It seems everyone wants to race even when I'm behavin... and I'm finally getting used to the jealousy factor.
Owned two in a row
Unless you’re a died in the wool roadster person you will find fault even in a Perfect example. If you really want a great roadster with all the road feel and sounds, you will not find a better choice for the money!!!!

Unbelievably Reliable
I bought my 2000 Z3 used in 2002. It’s now 2018. This has been a great car! In The ac still blows cold. The clutch has never been replaced. It handles just as good as the day Ibout it. The only things I’ve replace in all this time are: Alternator Water pump. Accelerator bushing The first two I’ve replaced on every car I’ve ever owned. My hat’s off to the team that built this car. I really feel like I got more than my money’s worth. I will probably own this car for the rest of my life. I still get chill bumps when a turn the key.

Relatively Rare and FUN!
I've owned alot of cars including a Porsche 944, but this has to be my favorite! This little coupe gets a consistant 30 MPG and is a hoot to drive. It handles like a go cart in the twisties and has plenty of power. Unlike the convertible, you can actually pack a weekends worth of gear in the back- or a weeks worth of groceries if that's what you need...did I mention that it's FUN TO DRIVE?!?!
zoom
I drive a lot and tend to push cars to the max. The z3 has held up amazingly well. Other than some early "service engine" light issues which required 10+ trips to the dealership in the first 3mo of ownership, I have no complaints. The engine in this car is a beautiful thing. For the price, you cannot find more of a head-turner. I don't recommend BMW's CPO program. But seriously this is one of the most fun to drive cars ever made. And talk about taking turns! Watch out on tires for this car as they run right around 200 a piece. Also, replace the crappy sound system. It's worth it and makes high speed trips with road noise all the more enjoyable.
Quailty and Performance=Loads of Fun
Great build quailty. Solid performance. Can't beat it with the top down cruising.
2000 Z3 for me!
I purchased my Z3 last year and have loved driving it. The power is just right and the look is sweet. I have had no problems and the dealer takes great care of me. I thought it would cost more to own this car but it is about the same if you add up all the oil changes on a regular car. BMW does whatever it takes to make their owners happy. It has been a pleasure owning this car.
A joy to drive
This car is simply a joy to drive in every aspect. It has great power, handles perfectly and has a very sex/fun look to it. If you like to drive this is the car for you.
It's not an MG Midget
My first car was a '76 MG Midget. It wasn't fast, but it was 1800 lbs of light, nimble pure fun. Like the MG, it is small with a slightly claustrophobic interior and the top comes down. But, this is not a light toy, and weighs in at a thousand pounds heavier. It is reasonably quick, very responsive and just plain sexy. For a reasonably new car, it has had way too many mechanical problems, such as the heater fan breaking, and the seals all needing to be replaced so it would not leak. That being said, the car is lots of fun and well worth the money. This is a very refined true cloth top roadster. And its way cool to have heated side view mirrors.
Coors
Had my 2.3 roadster for 1 year. Full Sport package and every option. Love it. Used to hate Z3's before I drove a six cylinder model. It's quick, and drives like a go kart, but it feels substantial. BMW makes great cars. The steering and shifter are perfect. No problems so far.
Z3 - fun, reliable... lots of smiles
I've thoroughly enjoyed the 2000 2.8 liter Z3 - great performance (196hp - but what's really nice is lots of torque). It's my daily driver - comfortable (I'm 6'1" 225lbs.) with more leg room than my full size Toyota. The car is lot of fun to drive, the only aftermarket item I've bought is a strut tower brace to dampen body roll whenI'm hammering through curves.
Bulletproof
After nearly 3 years and only ONE oil change, I'm finishing up my FIRST set of tires! This has ended up being the most reliable and cheapest to own car I have ever had. The resales assure me of only a couple of thousand per year to own. Undoubtedly one of the most FUN cars around to drive. Handles and feels great. Gets looks everywhere I go, I can't help but smile.
Great little car!!!
If your looking for a great used late model sports car look for a 2000 or newer 2.3. There are some great deals out there.
One heck of a roadster!
This was my first new car, my first real sports car and I love it. It get good gas mileage mid-20's and really good performance 60's in 5 seconds and 1/4 in 14-seconds. Oh yeah, my other car is a BMW 330i and a TOyota Tacoma 4dr 4wd truck.
Total Joy
I still have not had to take the car in for service, not even an oil change. I have driven it over 100 MPH and it handles great.
Sexy car
Women seem to love this car. I get "nice car" comments from women all the time. A friend of mine has a porsche... and he said he only gets that comment from guys. If I only had this car when I was 19 and still single. Oh well. Even without the fun performance of this car, the sheer enjoyment of being in traffic with the top down on a beautiful summer day is priceless. Makes traffic less painful.
Best Car I've Ever Owned
Great handling, high end torque, and brakes, so I am now prone to driving at excessive speeds. Great fun on winding roads. Sometimes I don't believe the speedometer the car feels so solid. Mechanically almost perfect, only service has been scheduled variety so far. Real easy to pass on 2-lane roads. Love the automatic trans which adapts to driving style, engine redlines before trans shifts when accelerating aggresively. I am more concerned about being rear ended in panic stopping situations the brakes are so good. No rattles or squeeks. Dealer was wrong about trunk, however, golf clubs do fit! Best car I have ever owned, by far.
S-W-E-E-T
This car is an experience unlike any other vehicle I've owned. It handles and performs exceptional. Although it is a 2.3, it has plenty of power and speed to provide a lasting grin for years. The comfort level is better than typical sports car and the interior design puts things right at your fingertips. The cosmetic appearance delivers a classy look that is eye-catching and head-turning. A 5- speed is the only flavor for this Roadster.
The most enjoyable car I ever had
It's so much fun getting into this car, start the engine hear it start up right away, the 6-Cylinder humm, backing out of a space is easy, the way it handles is great, it hugs the road, ... just all in all a fun vehicle.
Bulletproof
I have owned my Z for four years. I have driven it hard daily. I have had it back to the dealer once and that was for an oil change. I still love the cars looks and enjoy driving it in all kinds of weather.
I have owned my BMW 2002.8 L roadster since 2000.
I bought this vehicle new in 2000. The first year and a half that I owned it was a disaster. The drivetrain needed to be replaced. The transmission replaced as well. I went through 10 years of trying to fix this vehicle. At the time it cost me $40,000. I thought I would get a quality vehicle. But the first 10 years were hell. I have now owned this vehicle 19 years, and I have to say it was very much worth waiting for. This vehicle is beautiful. Gives me the satisfaction of driving a true mechanical car. It gives me such a total thrill to drive such a beautiful, powerful car is this. If you really want the pure joy of driving a car, get this to 2000 BMW Z3 2.8 roadster for yourself. You’ll thank me . I hope I am buried with this car when I die. I think it is the most challenging, exhilarating, car I have ever owned. God bless you all

2000 BMW Z Coupe 2.8
How can you beat this car? What else are you going to drive some car you see on every corner. I've considered many others including Minis, Boxsters and M3s. I see them all the time and I'm so glad of my choice. I have people asking me about the car all the time. People wondering what it is and if I'd sell it. Yeah right! I've had over 40 cars, mostly that fall into the fun category. This easily is the coolest little car I I know of within $30K of what they can be had for.
Man and machine , , ,
This is a beautiful convertible which drives and handles beautifully. It has lots of power and grips the road well.
LT2s Z3
Beautiful car in all aspects. Tremendously fun to drive. Plenty of power, corners like it's on rails. Very comfortable, plenty of leg room. You'll fall in love with one.
bulletproof
Except for chronically scrubbing the front spoiler when parking, I've never had a moment to question my decision to acquire this car - considered the Boxster, but chose the Z3. The 2.3 has great balance, exhilerating performance and sounds great. My wife gets looked at every time she drives it (which is why she lets me keep it). Every bad day gets better when I climb behind the wheel. It'll have 15k miles on it this month (time for the first oil change) and, although I hate to put this in writing, there has never been a mechanical issue of any kind. Get in. Sit down. Turn the key and off you go - solid as a rock 'n quick.
Looks Great
Fun to drive and classy looks. A real headturner. Just a beautiful looking sports car that stands out from the crowd. mfg11@aol.com
Z3 Coupe (50k miles)
I've loved this car from the very beginning. It is powerful and fun yet a little more practical than the roadster. We are able to get a decent amount of stuff in the hatch. Handling is superb.
Never too old to have fun
I bought a 2000 2.8 model as a retirement gift to myself. It came with a hard top which I really appreciate. It's easy to remove and has a soft top for summer. I look for excuses to drive it, and it's like driving a work of art. The interior feels like a 1965 car, but I love the retro look. I look forward to replacing the stereo and speakers. Buy the 5 speed for the ultimate experience and resale value if you decide to sell it. I love having a car that's different and rarely see one on the road.

Z3 2.5
This is the greatest car I have ever owned. Cannot see driving anything else.
