The Total Package
Love the drive, don't love the time it takes to recharge. First off I was very interested in the PHEV for the tax credit and to ride HOV. Second I was coming out of a 2018 XC90 and I have to say the improvement in ride quality moving from the Volvo to the BMW was HUGE Third the speed and power of the X5 45e is impressive, even though it’s stats are not dissimilar to the X5 4.0i it feels better Fourth the total range on a full tank and full charge is very impressive Fifth I am getting 35+ miles in electric mode and around town it’s delightful to drive Lastly, I leave the car set to hold the charge at 40% so I can always remote cool or heat and even so find my total MPG has never been less than 28MPG even on long highway trips.

Beautiful Vehicle
Gorgeous in and out. Lovely ride and outstanding get up and go. Electric 'round town, Sport mode V6 for weekend fun. And it's VERY fun to drive! Very happy with this purchase. Very practical for us as in town needs fall within the 30 mile electric range. Took a trip to North Carolina without the ability to charge and it handled superbly through the mountains. Only negative I can point out is the wide door sill. Hard not to get your pants dirty when entering/exiting the vehicle. So keep the sills clean!

Best 2022 PHEV
With 30 to 35 miles electric only range, the X5 45e is a great around town luxury vehicle with comfort and safety of a BMW. The 6 cylinder engine when needed starts generally smoothly with only the occasional low speed connection shudder and combined with battery power really accelerates. Gas mileage once the battery is expended is 23 to 26 mpg at highway speeds, but drops to 13-15 mpg when recharging the battery which is mainly used to be able to precool or prewarm the car remotely. Onboard charger is only 3.7 kw so a full charge takes 5 hours at 240 V 16 amps with 1% gain every 3 minutes. Yet charging by the engine takes only 1 hour which is at 17 kw rate so it is not a battery issue but apparently BMW being cheap. Also the battery has 24 kwhr capacity but in the USA is limited to 17 kwhr for warranty reasons (thanks California). Ride is smooth but controlled. The 2023 RR PHEV will have 62 mile electric only range but will cost $30 to $50k more. Beware the standard model which has satin aluminum trim which will severely discolor in touchless car washes due to the caustic soaps, so if for no other reason get the M sport option which has painted black trim.

Great value and drivability
We bought our hybrid X5 on a lark while driving cross country. Over the next 5000 miles from Santa Fe to Provincetown and back we put the vehicle through its paces and it never let us down. Last month though we got a warning and the vehicle went in for service at about 8000 miles. It turns out it needs a new shifter assembly and the part is delayed in Germany. The dealer gave us a loaner so we are not without our wheels and I would still recommend this vehicle highly. We did not buy a extended warranty.

Awesome Hybrid! Fun to drive!
I have driven almost 10,000 miles and have only used two tanks of gas! I usually get 32 electric miles per charge and plug in at home and have ability to charge at work. My commute is 21 each way which is perfect. I love the it keeps track of electric miles vs gas miles. Car handles great and is a beast in gas mode. Interior is comfortable ( had a Range Rover sport before) and info system is easy to use. Large display is nice. Only negative is hand gestures- if you grab your drink or use your hands when talking you can trigger the volume or mute it on accident. LOVE the cargo area in back with the drop down gate.. no more things falling out when lifting the hatch.
