Trim level differences
The 2024 BMW i5 is available in two trim levels: eDrive40 and M60. The eDrive40 uses a single 335-horsepower electric motor that powers the rear wheels. The sporty M60 adds a second electric motor up front. In addition to giving the M60 all-wheel drive, power jumps significantly to 593 horsepower. EPA-estimated range for the eDrive40 spans from 270 to 295 miles depending on wheel size. Smaller wheels get better range than larger ones. The i5's range estimate drops to between 240 and 256 miles, again depending on your choice of wheel size. It's worth noting that in the Edmunds EV Range Test, the i5 exceeded its EPA estimate by a few dozen miles.
Which i5 trim does Edmunds recommend?
Get the i5 eDrive40. While the dual-motor M60 model is plenty quick, we don't think the big increase in price is worth it. Among the i5's many options, the Driving Assistance Professional and Premium packages are worth getting for their additional helpful driver assistance features.
