This much fun should be illegal
5 spd, sports pkg. Still as much fun to drive as when new. I am 6'4" and with the sports seats set low it was the only 5 speed I could actually fit in comfortably. (what a shame) It really feels like you're wearing it, a sublime extention of your body. Speed and handling continue to impress (even scare at times) and never get tired of looking at it. The extended warranty is a good idea, so far front shocks, brakes, a/c, speakers, fuel pump, etc. Some how it is all still worth it.
Fun car but has durability issues
This is a fun car to drive just about anywhere. Great on-road grip, handling, breaking and steering. Could use a few more horses but around town it's plenty fast enough. The main drawbacks are durability of the trim and reliability. When mine was 5 years old it started becoming expensive with radiator, gearbox and other issues. The rubber seals around the windows also started to wear at which point I sold it. Great car but needs some $$$ and TLC to maintain.

Disappointed
I'm disappointed with the number of problems that I have experienced since buying the BMW 323i. I was expecting more based upon the reputation. I like the car, it's fun to drive, but I'm in the dealership for repairs every few months....broken window glides, defective interior light, body molding coming off the exterior, battery failure. Beware.
The best, but not perfect
Near flawless execution of style, comfort, and performance... and it's just plain fun to drive. If you have never owned a BMW, it's better in just about every way. The imperfection came when my wife hit a curb with the left front wheel at a slow speed and 3 airbags went off and $3500.00 later I had my car back. It took the dealer several tries to get the airbag light to stay off
Wow
This is my first BMW and I love this car. Handling is 2nd to none. I tend to tire of vehicles very easily and this one is a joy to drive. This one has the DINAN upgrades which make it even more fun.
Ultimate Commuting Machine
One fun car! Brake dust keeps you busy cleaning every weekend. Covered maintenance was awesome. Uncovered maintenance a bit expensive. Brake job quoted as $1200 by dealer, did it myself for $220 worth of rotors. Main mechanical problem was the typical control arm bushings @$600. In dash CD has problems ejecting. Adding CD changer in trunk solved that. Stereo is weak on Bass end. Haven't had window regulator problems others describe. Maintenance still a lot cheaper than my wife's Taurus. Overall, very happy.
BMW the cost of Luxury and repairs
The car now has 98K miles. I had a few problems with the car since I've owned it. My Air bag light came on around 80K miles. Diagnosis is a faulty Air bag computer, cost is $500. North American BMW will not assist in any way since warranty is not valid. Sunroof acts up by not closing as it should. I have found that this car needs alot of pampering to make it run problematic free. I have a toyota and no problems. Not sure if I would recommend one. I'll probably buy a Porsche or Mercedes next time.
The Ultimate Driving Machine
EVERYTHING. THE VEHICLE IS MAGNIFICANT. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO CAN AFFORD IT. LOL. I HAVE WANTED ONE SINCE I HAVE BEEN 8; NOW I AM 20 AND I OWN ONE! IT IS SO MUCH FUN TO DRIVE I WANT TO DRIVE IT 24/7. THE FEEL OF BEING IN SO MUCH CONTROL IS MAGNIFICANT AND IT HAS A DRIVE LIKE NO OTHER! IT IS TRULY THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE!
my baby
THIS CAR WAS BOUGHT ON IMPULSE FOR A DATE OVER TWO YEARS AGO, I HAVE NOT REGRETTED IT FOR ONE MOMENT.THE CAR HAS STARTED FIRST TIME EVERY TIME EVEN WHEN NOT USED FOR 2 OR 3 WEEK'S.TO DRIVE ANY OTHER CAR MAKE'S ME REALIZE HOW AMAZING MY CAR IS, MY NEXT CAR WILL BE A BMW.
EXCELLENT PEICE OF MOVING MACHINE!!!!
I bought this car jan 25, 2002 since then i drove 10k miles so far, most of them are long drives. this car drives dream. excellent & exceptional handling. impeccable driving manners. very sporty. 0-60 miles in 6.6 sec! fantastic & beautiful external look. simple & wonderful & luxury internal look. these are the pluses. Minuses: It SUCKS in snow (RWD). i currently live in michigan, it performs really really bad in michigan snow. mileage/gallen is less, also premium fuel (expensive). maintenance are really expensive, i did a level 2 service and brake pads changed for 1500$.
ultimate driving machine
Great car with all the fun to drive as expected by BMW. handling is outstanding power is good, not as snappy as my wrx but smoother. drives like on rails in all road conditions.
It's a BMW
It's what you'd expect from BMW. Outstanding build quality, great gas mileage, fun to drive, and reliability. Bought it used in 2003, and was very impressed. Great styling inside and out. With a little more power, this BMW would be perfect!
dream car
the car rocks. I'll never drive anything else. the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
Almost Perfection
BMW has never failed to impress me with their cars. This 323is is my favorite, so far.
Im never leaving BMW Family
Over all I cant beblieve I was missing this for 23yrs of driving. I will never deprive myself like that again with that driving expierence again
2.25 year update
Last 22k miles have been great. Only issues have been expensive dealer maintenance. I solved that with an independant shop who does the work for half the price. Also, have had all four window regulators replaced under CPO warranty ($50 ded.). Car still drives like a dream. Fast, fun, near flawless, stellar gas mileage. Great handling in snow with Blizzacks. Hope to keep it 300k miles!
54k miles
I've been driving this thing for 3 years now and I don't plan to switch! It's easy to take this car for granted until you've driven something else. BMW's handling is amazing.. it gives me so much confidence on the road. You get an excellent feel for the road and the steering is firm. Handles great in the dry but I've had some problems in the wet. Then again, my tires were old. Although this car is pretty quick, it doesn't have as much power as I'd like. Next car will be more performance oriented (Probably an M3). It's almost 2005 and this car is still better than most cars on the streets. Excellent ballance of performance, comfort, and functionaly
Great car spoiled by Reliability Issues
I bought the BMW 3 series new in 1999. The car drives incredibly well; however, the reliability is far below competing japanese makes and maintenance costs border on the obscene. In the 84k I've had the car, I've replaced all of the window motors, changed the AC compressor (twice), replaced parts of the front suspension, repaired several fluid leaks and replaced the thermostat (twice). In addition, a new battery was $250, since you can't go to WalMart and buy a battery. The dealer wanted $1,200 for a normal brake service and over $1,000 to change the belts (I went elsewhere, but still expensive).
There's only one...
I purchased this car used a little over 2 years ago. I've had the "usual" repairs reported by most drivers - window motors, control arms and bushings - but this seems to be a standard problem that all owners have to deal with. If you're willing to put up with a high(er) maintenance car you won't ever want to drive anything else. It handles like a dream and holds the road like no other car I've driven.
We need more hatchbacks like this
Americans would like hatchbacks more if there were more hatchbacks like this. A great mix of practicality and luxury. And it packs a lot of interior room into a not very long car. Very easy to park at only 166 inches in length, yet it's cargo capacity can carry a full sized dresser, fully assembled.
1999 328iA
I purchased my 1999 328ia, steel blue from Century BMW in Greenville, SC. I traded in my 97 318ia for a newer model. I drive approximately 40,000 miles a year and have put over 65,000 miles on this car since I got it. Even with close to 85,000 miles on it, it still out performs everything that I come across and have test drove. I looked at everything including Jags, Acura, Lexus, you name and I test drove it and nothing can close to BMW. Great gas mileage and extremely comfortable seats for those long trips. Only thing that could be improved is more trunk storage since I travel so much, I could use a little extra space. Looking at an X-5 4.4 next.
Unbelievable Ride
This is my first BMW and far from my last. I will never get rid of it but sure to get another. It is the smoothest ride with great handling. Great for just cruising around town and can handle its own when wanting to get somewhere quick. I have had a few little problems when I first bought it like an alignment but thats really it. The brake pads keep you busy with the dust but I replaced those by choice. The exterior is very sleek and sporty and the interior is pretty classy. The engine could use a little more power but I have done a few mods and gotten plenty of power. I have absolutely no complaints about this car and do not plan on having any Just do regular maint. and it will run forever
BMW Owner No More
I always wanted a BMW, this was my first and maybe my last. I have not driven the car one day without a light coming on. Either the turning lights (I haven't figured out the problem) or the check engine light, or the ABS and the list goes on. There is a lot of noise coming into the cabin from the suspension. The moonroof was always a problem. It is not a family friendly car, my baby's stroller barely fits in the trunk, and with the driver's seat in the driving position, not even my 6 year old would fit. I had to service the A/C because a low pressure hose broke. I hate sounding so negative, but it is true. I ended up buying another car, not a bimmer.
A Dream
Bought this vehicle for myself with 97000 miles and fully loaded with no apparent deficits (one owner vehicle). Body, engine, paint, interior, exterior in immaculate condition. Have driven it on long and short trips and it continues to elicit stares from lexus and benz owners. This vehicle is made for driving!!
The E46 BMW is the total package.
The 3 Series is the best buy in sports sedan market segment. I have absolutely enjoyed owning it. The handling and stability going down the road is tremendous. I have driven about everything else that is listed as competition, but nothing comes close. Happily there are numerous aftermarket accessories and parts suppliers that provide an alternative to the high priced dealer.
Perfect except for reliablity
Bit on the pricy side with only 170hp, since most japanese competition now offer 200 or more. But it doesn't feel slow by any means. Design and materials used in the cabin are top notch. Too bad they rattle like nissan sentra. Lots of minor problems, like airbag light being on constantly,(fixed 4 times already) but probably more fun to drive than lot of sport cars. Minor body roll without sport package.
Fun to drive, but...
Feels as solid as a tank. Could be quicker but fun nonetheless. Handles as if on rails. The controls are in all of the right places. Looks to kill. Perfect car, but it's an absolute money pit to own. Spent $6000 on repair bills including water pump, computer ($2000), rear-end bushings, 3 window actuators ($375/each) and other misc. parts. Dealer wanted to do even more repairs totaling $4000 (replacing radiator and expansion tank was $2500!). Walk away uless it comes with a very good extended warranty.
Still Going Great
I bought this car new in 99 and have had only minor problems since (brakes at 50, shocks and suspension at 80) but otherwise this car is a tank. No major problems and best of all I am still getting almost 27 mpg. One complaint is the dealership maintenance. Don't go there if you can help it, they charge 2x what a good local mechanic who knows BMWs does. If you have a late model BMW do yourself a favor and find a reputable local mechanic whom you can trust to fix your car.
Best for the money, most value
This car is a workhorse/tank. It offers the most performance, stability and safety unlike any other car. Acceleration is a dream while gas mileage is at 28mpg. And I shift at 5,000 rpm. I have only been serviced for oil changes. There is little back-end maintenance.
Good ride but caution
First BMW, got another one (06 330i) even with the minor issues I had with this one. Caution on getting the first year of a new generation (1999 E46 in this case). Should have waited for the bug fixes. Good handling, styling. Had to replace 4 window regulators, 2 cooling fans and 1 control arm. Broken sunroof shade. BMW owner should know that these cars are high performance = high maintenance. Tires will wear out in 20k miles.
Best BMW for the buck
Bought my 318ti used w/20k warranty remaining. Even with a/t, really a pleasure to drive. Wide stance offers great cornering with excellent brakes. A smooth but solid ride with the speedometer pointing straight up. A Its a shame that BMW doesn't offer this powerplant in the US market any more. Dealer warranty service has been exceptional.
Less is Better
One great vehicle. Handling is awesome, with plenty of pick up and performance in this little package of a 323i. Were a family of two and this car is perfect for a smaller family. The engineering is well defined and noted in this one.
BMW - Jalal
The ultimate driving machine
Okay... I guess...
I drove an '06 330 w/ sport pkg for a year, which is the greatest car I've ever driven outside of a Ferrari. I thought I'd ditch the new one for a used to avoid payments. Dumb. The 99 falls very short of my expectations. Sure, it drives great, when I'm not under the hood. 125k miles, and I've had to do "normal" wear and tear maintenance (control arm bushings, shocks, rotors, brakes, tires, battery, alternator, ac compressor, alignment, fluid flush, tune up, and a secondary air pump). Seems a bit excessive for "normal" wear and tear ($5300). My only fear is what's next?! Oh, and the stereo stinks! 8 speakers, none of which put out any bass! New stereo a must.
First & Last BMW
BMW=Bring Money With You. This car was junk from day one. All 4 electric window motors & relays replaced. Ac condenser electric fan-replaced 4 times. Belt broke did $1100.00 damage. Radiator split, $1300.00 front end, list goes on & on. Best day of my life when it was gone.
Love it !
First BMW but not the last !
Fun & Reliable
This is a fun car to drive. It is responsive, reliable and appealing to the fashionable driver. It is surprisingly economical for its performance. Two downturns: I had more hitches than expected, such as burned bulbs etc. - nothing major, but certainly a time consuming pain; not a spacious family car at all; passengers in the back seat are sure to complain during a long drive. Overall, perfect for a single adventurer or young couple. Absolutely love it and will continue to be a loyal BMW buyer (previously owned a 7-series and a M3).
Pretty Sad!!!! Better off Buying a Ford!
I have to say I am thourghly dissapointed!! I have had two BMs and will never get another BMW Canada and their Dealers are most unhelpfull and inconsiderate, I have had to replace so far over $3,000 and BMW says I do not care sir even if you are only 3,500 miles out of your warranty, and then they say sorry you are not even the original owner so we will do nothing for you!!
323 rating
it is solid and reliable but needs maintenance like any bmw. You can't forget about the car like a Toyota or Nissan.
Best of the bunch
This is the fourth BMW owned. One 6 series, remainder 3 series. All cars have met expectations, particularly the 1999 328ia. This car has all the attributes expected in a high priced small car. It handles well, is comfortable on a long trip..1400+ miles, and has been utterly reliable. The only negative has been the brake pads wearing out at 24,000 miles. Excellent mileage, 32+ mpg on a trip, nonexistent oil consumption during service interval. My basis of comparison is a 1997 Porsche 993 C2S.
