Great fun - but poor reliability

This is the last in a senies of Audi's I've owned since an A4 2.8 Q in 1998. Since then there's been an 2001 Audi TT Roadster, a 2001 S4 and a 2004 S4. While I love the comfort and the handling (I have the sports pkg on the A6 4.2), the reliability has been absymal (its been at the dealership every month this calendar year - in addition to regular maintenance). Its a love-hate. I love the speed, acceleration, handling, comfort, styling and with snow tires its GREAT on snow. But I can't afford the maintenance ($800 to replace the rear sunshade last month - ouch!)

We have been very pleased with this purchase. We test drove a Lexus GS300, BMW 328i, Acura TSX, and Infiniti I30t. The Audi was the best value: great price and awesome set of features. Who would pay 5k more for an inferior vehicle (GS300, 328i). For some reason pre-owned Audis are a great buy in the Atlanta area (well below blue book and Edmund's TMV).

After almost 4 years, I will soon be rid of this vehicle, as I will not purchase it at the end of lease. The car has spent more than 7 weeks in the dealer service department (this does not count 1 day trips). The dealer has been quite helpful, but after 3 computers, new coils, injectors, driver window, 3 catalytic convertors, and other assorted bits, I will say goodbye.

I came from a 2000 Passat 1.8T. I loved the Passat and had it not been for the Chrome trim and taller greenhouse, I might have gone with the B5.5 model Passat. But the A6 seemed to tie it together better than both the Passat and the A4. The car has got looks, more than enough power for civilized driving, plenty of room in a shiek cabin, and the road manners of a locomotive- meaning it sticks! In good weather it's nice with the roof open and Bose stereo up, but this car even makes bad weather fun to drive in. Comfortable, stable/predictable, solid, etc... I knew this coming into the relationship, and I have not been let down yet.
