I also totally agree. i have 8700miles on my 2012 and continue to get 20-22mpg in all city driving, so much for the dealer statements that the mileage will get better as the mileage increases. I have owned 2003 and 2004 Elantras and got about the same. The all highway drives with cruise on can get 35-40mpg,but the average will quickly fall with stop and go city driving. I have been ... Yay! My 2004 Elantra GT hatch has been a great car for us (my son uses it as his college car now), and I had pushed the Elantra way down my shopping list for my next car (summer 2013 purchase) because it was sedan-only, vs. hatches like the Mazda3, Focus, Impreza, and Golf. But NOW... suddenly the Elantra vaults way up my list because of the GT. Can't wait to see/drive ... Read More
Everything that you mentioned is similar to my driving conditions. I go 90% city 10% highway and have been getting 21-22mpg. I think it unlikely you can find a new engine for a 2000 Elantra. At best you'd get a remanufactured engine or a used engine. And it would be pricey. Putting anything other than the factory-spec engine into the car, e.g. a Honda engine, would be a tricky proposition. You might be able to get a newer Beta engine, e.g. Beta II, to fit, but I really don't know. You should ... Read More
I have a deposit on a 2012 Elantra GLS auto that might be here before the end of the week. I am planning on purchasing unless something is wrong with the car once it gets to the dealer. I am also surprised to have read that Hyundai's cars allegedly give you better MPG as the engine "breaks in". Quite frankly, I find that hard to believe, MPG declines slowly over the life of the car, does it not? Believe it. It's true. I know because I've experienced it on the two Hyundais (both Elantras) I purchased as new cars, a total of 13 years of car ownership between the ... Read More
Well the shop that did my timing belt/water pump replacement also tested and cleaned or flushed the fuel system. I'm honestly not sure how they do it or if it's any different than a cleaner you can buy at any auto parts store but it seemed to help, somewhat. I changed the fuel filter and that helped the chugging, most of the hesitation, and the severe lag when accelerating at a ... Read More
Not quite close to the buying frenzy over the Gen II Prius (the waiting list on those was many months when they first came out) but remarkable for a Hyundai. They guessed right on the avant garde styling--seems to be attracting a lot of people. 40 mpg EPA rating doesn't hurt either. I'm very glad my 2004 Elantra still has many miles left in it, and gets upper 30s mpg on ... Read More
I am a Hyundai owner, yes. But I am brand-agnostic when it comes to owning cars (see my profile). For example, current daily driver is a Sentra. The Elantra is a nice car, but now that one must pay nearly full price for one of them, it's no longer the killer value it once was. And ... Read More

What kind of desserts? Jello? Pudding? Creme pie maybe? (wink) Re transmission of bumps... did you check tire pressures before the cross-country trip? FWIW, the Elantra has had mid-size interior room since the Gen 3 debuted in late 2000. I own one of those (a 2004 hatch) and it's been a great car. The good news is, this could be an easy and cheap problem to fix. The 2001-6 Elantras are very sensitive to wheel balance. (Your Hyundai dealer may not have this, but you can ask them.) They seem to ... Read More
The answer I was awaiting from Hyundai Corporate about the use of 5/20 oil in my car posed more contradictions than clarifications. Has anyone ever removed the oil pan if so how hard is it
Yep, oil loss will kill the engine before it has time to overheat, unless it is a really worn engine (loose). I am surprised she didn't get an oil warning light, though. Then again, I know way too many people that don't notice/pay attention to/understand what those lights mean when they come on.
Loss of oil would probably cause damage due to excessive wear on the pistons, rings, and other internal components before she would notice any change in engine temperature.
Thanks for the explanation! Wouldn't the loss of oil cause the engine to overheat? I asked her about that and she didn't notice if the temp gauge was up at the time the car lost compression on the highway. Unfortunately, she only has liability on the car and its out of warranty.
I would bet he said oil leaked OUT OF the oil pan, damaging the crankshaft (and the rest of the engine, for that matter). Only an inspection would show if some portion of the light pole base damaged the oil pan, but based on the incident as you explained it, that is probably what happened. The oil pressure light would have been coming on to indicate loss of oil. If she ... Read More

It seems very odd that Hyundai would change its suppliers for the 2005 MY Elantra, then apparently change them again for the 2006 MY (the scores improved for 2006). They don't publish their cutoffs for each category, but there must be cutooffs. So let's say for example the upper-end cutoff for ... Read More
Well, let's keep the big picture in mind. It doesn't matter *why* the stats for the 2005 went down. What matters is that they *did* go down. That's the only metric that matters, because that's what the bottom line describes: likelihood of failure. To say "well it's the exact same design therefore it can't have different stats in different years" is absurd. The facts are already there: the stats *are* different. ... Read More
To me, that casts doubt on JD Power's long-term reliability scores, since the 2004 Elantra was the mid-gen refresh car, while the 2005 and 2006 were 100% carryover from 2004: same powertrains, same interior, same body, same everything. So they should have very similar scores to the 2004, and if anything the 2004 should be lower because it was the first year of the refresh, and is older. As for CR's, ... Read More
If you go by Consumer Reports, you'll see something interesting. The overall score for the car as a used car doesn't go above average until year 2004. Then, the 2005 year actually goes down to average again (not good!), and picks up with 2006. Of course, 2006 forward is too short a track record for long term reliability to tell, so the real bottom line for Elantras is: buy 2004, avoid ... Read More

That seems quite contrary to the majority of opinions on the Sonata forum who relentlessly tought the advantages of these devices as absolutes for safety while condemning those autos who lack such options. I am curious as to what ... Read More
"Having talked with a dealer friend in NB, Canada, he states that the Elantra is a huge and substantial move forward for the XD platform and that many will be surprised how 'upmarket' the new Elantra looks and feels." In other news, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates was quoted as saying "Windows Vista is a stunning accomplishment." "but I am quite sure they have most bugs worked out prior to the Canadian ... Read More
Although I can't claim the same mileage backy does, I can agree with almost everything he says. However, I'll throw this out there for anyone who cares. Backy said, and also I use a fuel injector cleaner every 3-4k miles. Don't know if that helps, but it doesn't seem to hurt. I used Chevron Techron once, out of a desire to do good preventive maintenance. During the following tank of gas, ... Read More
Is anyone experiencing low bulb burnouts possibly related to bad alternators in 2004 model year Elantras? There were some posts some time back about this. Here is one of them: #951 of 2432 RE: Lowbeam failure by 5port Mar 25, 2004 (7:30 am) Reply | E-mail Msg There are two TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) issued by Hyundai about this problem. They apply to the 2001 to 2003 models. The inside story ... Read More
Same exact problem with my 2004 Elantra GLS 5-speed. This is a very common problem which, while Hyundai has a TSB out for this, still refuses to fix. I took my Elantra in a total of 6 (count them, 6!) times to TWO different Hyundai dealerships and the problem remains. First, they wouldn't even acknowledge the problem until I showed them the TSB. Then they claimed it was "normal." After 3 ... Read More
we never used to bring our cars to the dealership for service-usually jiffy-lube or to a friend that had a auto-repair shop. When we bought our hyundai in 2002 we tried the dealership and found when there was something wrong that was covered under warranty or if there was a recall they would let us know. They do not over charge for oil changes IMO. we have owned 2 2002 elantras, ... Read More
"My source is my EYES." Now that's objective. You made a claim that Edmunds and Hyundai's information is incorrect regarding seat height adjustment being standard. Again, I ask you to please cite your source so that anyone interested in purchasing a Sonata GLS has all the accurate information. You said: "For example, compared to a full-size Sonata GLS, the Jetta VE costs more MSRP" Either Auto or MANUAL, the Sonata GLS ... Read More
"Hyundainews is OFFICIAL. Hyundainews.com is the official US media site for Hyundai. Repeat - Official site for Hyundai USA Media." ElantraIsTheBestcarEver.com is about as official as Hyundainews.com is in terms of OFFICIAL EPA ratings. As of today, there are none. Plus, the 2004 Elantra press release on the front page isn't helping things for the official Hyundainews :) "Again, you are reading too much into torque...it's not all about torque (gloating ... I own a 2004 Elantra so that's why i'm on this thread :) The problem with the 2007 Elantra boils down to the fact that Hyundai, rather than redesign the whole vehicle, has placed an updated exterior and interior on an otherwise outdated drivetrain. Its not so much that the HP and torque numbers are dismall, its the fact that the powertrain as a whole lacks refinement (and yes, better performance) ... Read More
You really aren't serious that you can't see Corolla back lights on the picture of the Elantra above? Just wait for the reviews, and we will see. I bet you didn't think the new Jetta looked like a Corolla either. Funny, many of the reviewers did. I have heard multiple people say the back end of the Sonata looked like the Accord from 2003 to 2004. Many of the initial people ... Read More
this is a nice picture of this car http://www.hyundainews.com/presskit2007/photos/07Elantra_11.jpg hyundai is following their new design philosophy , good for them for trying to be different but not too radically. This is the prototype they are using for all their cars now and in the future http://www.diseno-art.com/encyclopedia/concept_cars/hyundai_hcd8.html see the resemblence to the azera, santa fe and elantra? This was the hyundai 2004 concept and will be how most hyundai cars will be ... Read More
It would be a real shame if Hyundai no longer offers some of the "little" things. It was Hyundai's attention to detail that attracted me to the Elantra in the first place. Heated mirrors, traction control, door courtesy lights, a lighted ignition key cylinder ring, trip computer, fade-to-off interior lights...heck there were lights for every single power door window switch in the cabin, not just the driver's door. I totally agree ... Read More
"I think the new Elantra looks good enough (on paper at least) that it doesn't need to list for $3000 less than the Civic to sell." You kidding me? With the same 2.0 Beta engine that is in my 2004 Elantra that is noisy, underpowered (same 138 HP at 6000 RPMS), gets only decent mileage, and generally a bore to drive?? And to hear this model will sticker decently equipped at ... Read More
you waited 6 years for what?? This engine cameout, late 2004 for spectra and elantra just got the use of this engine before its extinct. You think its easy to build engines? Hyundai has been keen on quality, and i'm sure this engine has that. Honda and Toyota make good engines, this engine is better compared to a Mazda 3(mazda 3 better power, slightly better mpg than mazda 3, better price) ... Read More
I'm new here and was wondering if there some newer 2006 Elantra 4Dr Sedan owners in this forum that are having any major problems with their car, or just have any recommendations on buying one... hopefully your honda will be trouble free. we had no problems with the hyundais we own or have owned. our first one was a 1988 excel with 5speed. we drove it almost 200,000 miles and then gave it to our son-in-law. he drove it over the 200,000 mile mark. it got totaled when someone drove thru a red light. it still had the original clutch. when my parents bought a new ... Backy, thanks for answering my question. It sounds like I'll have to wait until 2007. However, I'm not trying to be argumentative but the XM website says the Elantra was supposed to be one of the first groups with XM. http://www.xmradio.com/newsroom/screen/pr_2005_03_25.html Who knows, as long as it gets there. This will be a huge incentive for my wife who loves XM. Also found this: http://www.hyundaiusa.com/abouthyundai/news/2004_04_28_2/2004_04_28_2.aspx Which I think is cool because ... Read More
Okay I'm starting to become a believer that Hyundai cars get better gas mileage over many thousands of miles of "break-in". 2004 Elantra GT Hatchback - AT - 2 adults in the car and a modest amount of luggage for all these trips. Well, here's what I got goin' on: A 2005 Hyundai Elantra GLS 5-door with AT & cruise for about $13700-$14000 + TTL. I plan on driving out to that dealer tomorrow afternoon and hopefully driving back in an Elantra. They have ... Read More
But Hyundai seems to be lengthening its product cycles--the Accent was replaced after six years, and the Sonata after 6-1/2 years. It makes perfect sense if you think about it: Hyundai is trying to improve their quality reputation, right? When is quality the worst? When a new model is introduced and all the bugs are being worked out. And if they are purposely spending an extra year on the new design ... Read More
Hyundai Recalls Elantra Hyundai Motor Co. will recall 240,000 Elantra sedans and hatchbacks because of a possible defect in the vehicles' airbag system, the South Korean automaker said this week.
