WOLFSBURG, Germany — The Volkswagen Scirocco Million special model celebrates a major milestone for the sporty coupe.

The Scirocco Million will be sold only in Germany and China, according to Volkswagen.

The special model gets styling cues including R-Line bumpers and smoke taillights. It also gets dark tinted rear windows, a Deep Black Metallic exterior paint treatment and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The cabin gets standard leather seats with contrasting seams in Snap Orange. Other cabin details include stainless-steel pedals and entry plates with "Million" lettering.

The special Scirocco can be ordered with three different gas engines and two diesel engines. It will be priced at the U.S. equivalent of $35,843 when it goes on sale later this year.

The Scirocco name comes from the Italian word for a certain type of wind. The first generation of the coupe was launched in 1974 with the second-generation version running from 1981-'92. The third generation bowed in 2008. Volkswagen said it calculated sales of all three generations of the car to come up with the million number.

When the third-generation Scirocco went on sale in 2008, Volkswagen said the U.S. already had the Volkswagen GTI and the R32, enough "halo" vehicles for what is a niche segment.

Edmunds says: U.S. buyers are shut out of the Volkswagen Scirocco Million festivities.

Comments

  • I would love to see the Scirocco R come to the United States at an affordable price (build it on N.A. continent and focus on build quality). Why not replace the Golf R with the Scirocco R in the VW line up? This would promote better model differentiation in my opinion. The R32 and Golf R have always been a tough sell for anyone other than VW enthusiasts because they are too similar to the less expensive GTI. Perhaps a "base" Scirocco could also be offered with the GTI engine.....
