AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Chrysler began shipping the delayed 2014 Jeep Cherokee to dealers on Tuesday, Chrysler told Edmunds.

Chrysler marked the occasion by posting several photos on its Web site of shiny new Cherokees on a car hauler as they were being delivered to a Bloomfield Hills, Michigan dealership. This is the first official confirmation that the Cherokee is on its way to consumers.

Shipments had been put on hold because of issues with the Cherokee's new nine-speed transmission and its software.

"Shipping began yesterday," wrote Jodi Tinson, a Chrysler spokeswoman. She did not provide further details.

Few automakers post updates on vehicle shipments, but the Cherokee launch is the most important one for Chrysler this year. General Motors also provided a shipping update on the highly anticipated 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray earlier this year.

The Cherokee replaces the Jeep Liberty and competes against the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape and Nissan Rogue, among others.

Chrysler's most recent production report notes that 9,419 Cherokees were built in September. The automaker had produced 18,849 Cherokees in total this year, the report said. Each Cherokee is being test-driven before it is released for delivery, according to Automotive News.

Edmunds says: Consumers will finally be able to get their hands on the 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

They were smart to hold shipments until the car was right.
