The 2015 Audi A3 sedan will go on sale in the U.S. next spring.
Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, Bluetooth, LED daytime running lights, leather seats and bi-xenon headlights.
The base 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 start at $30,825, including a $925 destination charge. The uplevel 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG starts at $48,405, including shipping. The CLA went on sale here in late September.
Audi did not disclose pricing for the other upcoming models in the A3 lineup, including the performance-oriented 2015 Audi S3, the A3 Cabriolet and A3 TDI clean diesel that will go on sale later in 2014. The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid vehicle will debut in 2015.
Audi Spokesman John Schilling told Edmunds that the automaker could not provide details on A3 sedan options or what a fully loaded vehicle would cost at this point.
He said the pricing strategy was "definitely going to bring younger buyers into the brand." Schilling said the CLA is the A3's main competition and could not cite any domestic cars that would rival the A3.
"People looking at the A3 aren't cross-shopping domestic cars," he said.
The A3 sedan will offer several powertrains, including a 170-horsepower 1.8-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine and a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine. Schilling said the horsepower number on the 2.0-liter engine has not been finalized. All engines are mated to the standard six-speed S tronic transmission.
Edmunds says: This is shaping up as a major battle between the CLA and the A3 now that there's no differentiation on price.
