GOODWOOD, England — The wraps have come off the 2014 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Waterspeed Collection and there are some surprises in store for buyers.

For the first time in Rolls-Royce history, the exterior finish — a vibrant blue — extends to the engine.

The unusual finish is called "Maggiore Blue." It is inspired by the color of a Rolls-Royce-powered Bluebird K3 boat piloted by Sir Malcolm Campbell that set a world speed record in 1937.

The striking color also adorns the car's 11-spoke wheels, the two-tone steering wheel and interior trim.

The limited-edition model pays tribute to "remarkable acts of British daring and endeavor," the company said on Tuesday.

The special model is all about the cosmetic treatment, including the nine layers of paint required for the exterior finish.

No performance upgrades have been made. The Waterspeed Collection cars are equipped with a 6.75-liter V12 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing and launch timing were not announced.

Edmunds says: Those legendary acts of British daring now apply to the bold use of color on the Waterspeed Collection.
