MAHWAH, New Jersey — The 2014 Range Rover jumps on the engine-downsizing movement with word that the base model will feature a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine instead of a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine.

The 3.0-liter V6 engine delivers 340 horsepower, a 35 hp drop compared to the base 5.0-liter V8 engine.

A 510-hp supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine will also be offered in the 2014 Range Rover.

Both engines will be paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Jaguar Land Rover did not respond immediately to queries from Edmunds asking about pricing on the 2014 Range Rover. The 2014 Range Rover goes on sale this summer. The 2013 Range Rover starts at $83,545, including an $895 destination charge.

The V6-powered Range Rover will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. Fuel economy is expected to improve to 16 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway, compared to the V8's 14 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway. The EPA has not posted official fuel economy numbers on the 2014 Range Rover.

Word of the smaller engine in the Range Rover comes as gas prices are climbing. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Wednesday pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. at $3.76 versus $3.30 a month ago.

Edmunds says: Fuel economy is an important consideration, even for buyers of high-end luxury SUVs, which helps to explain the thinking on the move to a more modest — albeit supercharged — V6 engine in the 2014 Range Rover.
