SANTA MONICA, California The 2014 Nissan Versa sedan tops Edmunds' list of the 10 most affordable new cars.

"Overall, it's a pretty diverse list of brands," said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds senior analyst and director of pricing and industry analysis. "This might not have been the case a few years ago when Ford and Chevrolet didn't focus on the small end of the vehicle spectrum."

The Versa sedan starts at $12,780, including a $790 destination charge.

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark came in 2nd on the list, followed by the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage. The Spark hatchback starts at $12,995, including an $825 destination charge. The Mirage hatchback starts at $13,790, including a $795 destination charge.

Rounding out the top five are the 2014 Smart Fortwo Pure coupe hatchback with a starting price of $14,020, including a $750 destination charge, and the 2014 Kia Rio. The Rio starts at $14,700, including an $800 destination charge.

The 2014 Ford Fiesta sedan took the 6th spot with a start price of $14,925, including an $825 destination charge.

The 2014 Chevrolet Sonic sedan is the 7th most affordable car. The Sonic starts at $14,995, including an $825 destination charge.

Rounding out the top 10 are the 2014 Toyota Yaris, 2014 Hyundai Accent and 2014 Mazda 2.

The Yaris hatchback starts at $15,240, including an $810 destination charge. The Accent sedan starts at $15,455, including an $810 destination charge. The 2014 Mazda 2 hatchback starts at $15,515, including a $795 destination charge.

Caldwell also tells consumers, "If price is really a concern and you drive a lot, perhaps mpg is another good thing to consider."

For example, the Versa sedan is not the fuel economy leader on the list. The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission tops the list. It returns 34 mpg in city driving and 42 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Edmunds says: Edmunds also produces True Cost to Own, which is another good tool for consumers as it gives the cost of ownership.

  • I think the Prius should be on the list. When all is added up, I end up paying just $50/month to drive the thing. - $30/month for insurance (from "green" discounts @ 4autoinsurancequote) - $20/month at the pump If you can get your hands on a Prius, I strongly encourage it!
