WASHINGTON — Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 311 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK250, SLK350, SLK55 AMG, SL550, SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG cars because the front passenger airbag may not deploy properly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Until the vehicle has been fixed, owners are advised that passengers or other items should not be placed in the passenger seat, said NHTSA.

"Due to an airbag assembly error, the front passenger airbag may not deploy properly," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "In the event of a crash necessitating front passenger airbag deployment, the front passenger seat airbag may not deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger seat occupant."

The affected vehicles were built from March 19, 2014 through May 5, 2014.

The airbag supplier is Takata AG.

There are no reported accidents, injuries or fatalities, wrote Donna Boland, a Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman, in response to an Edmunds query.

Mercedes-Benz dealers will replace the front passenger airbag, but parts for the remedy are not available at this point. The automaker will send an interim letter to owners sometime this month. A second letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners can contact Mercedes-Benz at 1-800-367-6372.

Edmunds says: It's a waiting game for owners of these cars until parts become available. It's best to stay in touch with your dealer at this point if you have any immediate concerns.
