DETROIT — The 2014 Jeep Cherokee, Chevrolet Spark, Ford Fusion and Hyundai Elantra are among the standouts as automakers reported December car sales on Friday.

"The new Cherokee proved to be a big winner among shoppers," said Michelle Krebs, an Edmunds senior analyst.

Jeep dealers sold 15,038 units of the 2014 Cherokee in December, its second full month of sales. Chrysler reported U.S. sales of 161,007 vehicles, a 6 percent increase compared with sales in December 2012.

The Ford Fusion, Fiesta and Escape hit annual sales records in 2013, Ford said. The Ford F-Series continued as the country's best-selling truck. Ford said December sales were up 2 percent.

GM said it was a "remarkable year" for the Spark, which saw more than 34,000 deliveries by dealers, even though total December deliveries for the automaker fell by 6 percent.

The Chevrolet Corvette had its best December sales since 2006.

Hyundai Motor America tweeted that it was a "strong year for Elantra and Santa Fe families," as it reported best-ever December sales of 63,005 vehicles.

Nissan reported its December sales rose 11 percent.

"With a strong launch for the U.S.-built 2014 Rogue now under way, we expect to maintain our strong sales momentum as we roll into 2014," said Fred Diaz, Nissan's U.S. senior vice president of sales and marketing, parts and service, in a statement.

Sales of the Nissan Leaf were the best for any month since launch with 2,529 deliveries, an increase of 70 percent over last December.

Edmunds says: Expect car shoppers to continue to snap up popular models, including the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, Chevrolet Spark, Ford Fusion and Nissan Rogue in the coming months.
