DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2014 Ford Fiesta with the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car offered in the U.S., based on its 45 mpg highway fuel economy, Ford said on Tuesday.

This version of the Fiesta tops the 2014 Honda Insight and 2014 Volkswagen Golf diesel model. The 2014 Insight returns 44 mpg on the highway, while the 2014 Golf diesel with a six-speed manual transmission returns 42 mpg on the highway.

The 2014 Fiesta with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine starts at $16,740, including a $795 destination charge, according to Ford. The base 2014 Ford Fiesta S sedan with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission starts at $14,795, including shipping.

"With the new Fiesta 1.0-liter EcoBoost we're pushing into fuel economy numbers only seen on hybrids and diesels," said Joe Hinrichs, Ford executive vice president and president of the Americas, in a statement.

In comparison, the 2014 Fiesta FWD with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine returns 29 mpg in city driving and 39 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The EcoBoost's impressive fuel economy numbers are confirmed at a time when gas prices are falling in the U.S. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Tuesday pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. at $3.27 versus $3.54 a year ago.

Ford said fuel economy is often cited as the No. 1 purchase consideration in the subcompact class.

Edmunds says: If fuel economy is your No. 1 purchase consideration, the Fiesta with the EcoBoost engine should be on your short list.
