WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 9,466 2012-'13 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks equipped with 6.6-liter V8 diesel engines and dual fuel tanks because of a problem with the fuel pump, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"In the affected vehicles, the transfer pump which moves fuel from the rear tank to the front tank could malfunction and cause the fuel gauge to indicate an inaccurate reading,"
said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "If the fuel gauge indicates an inaccurate reading, it may result in the vehicle unexpectedly stalling, increasing the risk of a crash."

The affected vehicles were built from April 1, 2012 through May 31, 2013.

Alan Adler, a GM spokesman, told Edmunds there are no known crashes or injuries linked to the recall.

GM dealers will replace the fuel transfer pump. A date has not yet been set for the recall. Owners can contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 and GMC at 1-800-462-8782.

Edmunds says: Even though a date has not been specified for this recall, you'll want to get your truck in for service if you notice a problem.
