TORRANCE, California — Toyota is recalling 150,000 2001-'04 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks because the spare tire can detach from the vehicle, according to the automaker.

There have been two reports of the spare tire from a Toyota Tacoma hitting another vehicle, but no reported injuries, according to Brian Lyons, a Toyota spokesman, in response to an e-mailed message from Edmunds.

The affected trucks are registered in 20 cold-weather states and the District of Columbia. They are: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

"In these vehicles, the spare tire is stored underneath the rear bed and suspended by a spare tire carrier on a metal lift plate," said Toyota in a statement on its Web site. "During manufacture, the spare tire carrier lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with phosphate.

"The lack of phosphate coating combined with prolonged exposure to high road salt use and other environmental factors may contribute to the development of more than normal corrosion of the lift plate on some vehicles. Over time and in limited cases, corrosion of the lift plate could cause it to break and result in detachment of the spare tire from the vehicle."

Toyota dealers will inspect and possibly replace the spare-tire carrier assembly. The recall is expected to begin in December. Owners can contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Edmunds says: Tacoma drivers in Florida needn't concern themselves with this one.
