The BMW X5 comes packed with technology features, but buyers will have to spend a lot of time learning the various menus and buttons to extract the most out of it. Compared to its competitors, the X5 is the jack-of-all-trades SUV and effectively handles both utility tasks and performance drives with equal aplomb.

Overview
BMW's extensive SUV roster started with just one vehicle: the original BMW X5. Now in its third decade of production, the BMW X5 is currently one of the most compelling choices in the midsize luxury SUV segment. Every version offers impressive acceleration, a wealth of technology features, and a spacious, comfortable cabin. You can even add a third-row seat to the X5. It's good in a pinch, but if you consistently require seven-passenger capacity, we recommend getting the larger BMW X7.

This year, the 2022 BMW X5 carries over with minimal changes beyond the arrival of an opulent Black Vermilion version of the xDrive40i. Available for just one year, the X5 Black Vermilion pairs plush equipment with flashy styling inside and out. Overall the X5 is a solid choice for a luxury SUV among rivals such as the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Genesis GV80 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.0/10
How does the X5 drive? We tested the xDrive40i. The six-cylinder engine is suitably powerful and responsive enough for the daily commute. Whether you pick this engine or the V8, the X5 is one of the quickest of the non-performance-oriented SUVs available. BMW also offers an optional off-road package that enhances the X5's capability to take on dirt roads and trails.
Handling and steering, however, are less impressive. The steering doesn't give you much feel for the road, and the X5 can feel overly soft and floaty when driving around turns unless you engage Sport mode. In more casual driving, the X5 is easy to drive, and its eight-speed transmission makes smooth and quick gearshifts.

Comfort
8.0/10
How comfortable is the X5? Fitted with its optional air suspension, the X5 rides fairly smoothly, but harsher impacts and pavement seams can still be felt in the cabin. Sport mode is stiffer and transmits more of the road surface into the cabin, but thankfully the X5 isn't ever uncomfortably harsh. At highway speeds, road and wind noise is minimal.
The front seats are firm and supportive and have a broad range of adjustability to contour to different body types. Lumbar and upper bolsters are adjustable for cruising or sporty driving. The rear seats are softer and designed for long stints, but they're flat and don't have enough bolstering.

Interior
8.0/10
How’s the interior? The seats are set in from the door, and occupants will have to shimmy to get in. We'd recommend taller drivers avoid the optional running boards for easier entry. But once you're in, there's ample room for the front passengers and good headroom, knee room and shoulder room for the rear passengers. The X5 has a technologically advanced interior, but the mass of buttons on the center console and the fiddly climate controls are difficult to learn.
Visibility is a problem. The X5's surround-view camera system is excellent when parking, and views out of the front and sides are commanding. Direct views to the back are adequate if your seat is adjusted properly. The side mirrors and the door frame can hide pedestrians and other road users from view, though. Get the optional surround-view camera system to help with parking maneuvers.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? BMW's latest iDrive system is advanced, but it also comes with a steep learning curve. Helping you are its combination of menus, handwriting recognition, and voice and gesture control. Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility is standard, as is Android Auto. The X5's native navigation and voice commands work well.
Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are excellent, but the operation of the active lane centering and auto high beams is only average. Automatic parking and 3D surround-view mode are clunky to operate.

Storage
8.0/10
How’s the storage? The X5 has a roomy cargo area and a useful power tailgate/liftgate system that's great for loading bulky cargo. The armrest bin can hold a few standard water bottles, and that's about it. There's a shallow but deep pocket with an induction charger in front of the shifter, but access to this area is restricted once you use the cupholders.
In standard configuration, the xDrive40i can tow up to 6,603 pounds. It can tow up to 7,200 pounds when equipped with an optional factory-installed hitch.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA-estimated fuel economy for the xDrive40i version we tested is 22 mpg in combined city/highway driving. On our 115-mile mixed driving evaluation route, we netted 21.3 mpg, which is average for the segment.
Value
7.5/10
Is the X5 a good value? The X5 is priced on the high side of the segment, and that's before loading it up with options and features. But we think the build quality and capability are worthy of the price. The durable leather, excellent use of soft-touch materials, tight gaps in all interior panels, and a general feeling of solidity have been BMW hallmarks. It also comes with significant towing and hauling capability.
BMW gives new owners a four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranty, which is on par with the rest of the segment. There's also four years of roadside assistance, with no mileage limitation.

Wildcard
8.0/10
If you're looking for the ultimate all-rounder, the X5 is the SUV you should be looking at. It's expensive, and finding the perfect one might be hard due to the bevy of options and packages, but the X5 will do what you need it to. The base 40i versions will give you sufficient driving entertainment, and the high-horsepower xDrive50i and M50i will definitely raise your pulse even higher.
Which X5 does Edmunds recommend?
Stick with the xDrive40i. From its smooth-revving and efficient turbocharged six-cylinder engine to its variety of features, packages and options, the X5 xDrive40i is, for most buyers, the most well-rounded version of this SUV.
2022 BMW X5 models
The 2022 BMW X5 is available in four trim levels. The sDrive40i has rear-wheel drive, while the xDrive40i, xDrive45e, and M50i include standard all-wheel drive. A high-performance X5 M is also available and is reviewed separately.
sDrive40i and xDrive40i
The sDrive40i and xDrive40i are essentially identically equipped, except for the standard all-wheel-drive system in the latter model. Standard features include:
- Turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine (335 horsepower, 331 lb-ft)
- Eight-speed automatic transmission
- Adaptive suspension dampers
- 19-inch wheels
- Panoramic sunroof

- Power-adjustable, heated front seats

- Digital instrument cluster
- 12.3-inch touchscreen (standard on models produced early in the year)
- 12.3-inch display screen (standard on models produced later in the year)
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
- Navigation system

xDrive45e
The xDrive45e is a plug-in hybrid. It has a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, electric motors, and a hybrid battery pack that you can plug in and charge. With a full battery charge, the xDrive45e provides an EPA-estimated 31 miles of all-electric driving. When the battery is discharged, the xDrive45e operates as a regular gas-electric hybrid vehicle. Total system output is 389 hp and 443 lb-ft.
Generally, features and options match those on the sDrive40i and xDrive40i, but you can't get a third-row seat on the xDrive45e. Cargo space is not quite as generous either.
M50i
The X5 M50i is an M Sport-tuned version of the SUV, offering a more accessible path to performance for people who don't require the capabilities of the X5 M. It's powered by a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (523 hp, 553 lb-ft), includes all-wheel drive, and comes with numerous performance upgrades, but it's not as intense as the high-performance X5 M.
It's equipped similar to other X5 models, but it adds or replaces some features. It includes:
- M Sport-tuned adaptive suspension
- M Sport exhaust
- M Sport steering wheel
- 20-inch wheels
- Leather upholstery
- Upgraded front seats with ventilation and massage
- 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system
Option packages for the M50i are also similar to those for other X5 models, though there is an exclusive Dynamic Handling package that further sharpens the X5 M50i's steering and handling capabilities.

X5 45e
Thomcin, 02/05/2022
2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
10 Month Update: February 2023. Total MPG is 43.4 to date. 40 % City 60% Highway. Usual charge last 30-32 miles. Last 32 days drove 600 miles used 2.8 gallons of gas! Only problem thus far was GPS with amnesia due to small leak around shark fin antenna. Replaced under warranty. No rattles. Extremely comfortable seats. Great handling. Just saw price of new X5 50e is $10,000 higher than my … 10 month old SUV & does not appear to qualify for $7500 tax credit making new one $17,500 more expensive! Love this vehicle l.
Original review:30-33 miles on battery power alone. Interior better looking & more comfortable than its peers. In-line 6 is powerful yet gets good gas mileage. Plenty of room behind second row seats. Come with $7500 rebate from federal government & $1000 rebate from BMCCA if you have been a member for at least 6 months. That is a total of $8500 off MSRP from rebates. Quite the deal while getting 50 mpge. Update 1: 6000 miles & zero problems or issues. Last tank full of gas lasted over 900 miles. All electric miles cost 5 cents here while 93 octane cost 27 cents per mile. About 40 percent is all electric & 60 per cent on gas. Great ride, power, comfort & mpg. Cons: cost of 93 octane. Loving this SUV.
UPDATE: Have had my SUV 18 months & love it. Getting 44+ mpge with 60% Highway 40% city. Smooth ride. Great Seats. Comfortable. Mostly reliable. Had to replace antenna due to water leak & had to replace 48 volt & 12 volt batteries due to defect. Both done under warranty. We love this car.
2 Year Update: 45.5 mpg 55% City 45% Highway. 28,000 miles. Love the I6, great seats with massage function. Mostly reliable. Will probably replace tires @ 30,000 miles with non run flats. Cost per mile on electric is 5.5 cents & on gas is 20.5 cents. As compared to gas only model I have saved $11,000 (tax rebates $8200 gas savings $1800). Quite the bargain.

Great transition to an electric vehicle
John E, 12/09/2021
2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
It's a "real" BMW with all the road feel for which X5's are known. In town, my X5 has been "all electric" with a fast charger at home and access to ChargePoint at work. On the weekends, the hybrid mode has kept us just over 50 MPG as we travel over 200 miles to and from the NC mountains.
Very happy with the fit and finish, ride, and technology. BMW updates have been well planned.
But … I do have one complaint. In Europe the 45e gets over 50 miles per charge. I'm told the battery discharge has been "limited" for the US market. Come on BMW, release the juice!

Getting 75 mpge

2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
Presently driving 75% in City 25% on highway. Extremely comfortable and with almost 400 HP on tap this suv is really quick. Harmon Kardon has great sound and the driver & passenger seats massage is to die for. Sport seats fit glove tight & love the heated/cooled features found in the luxury seating package. $7500 back on Federal taxes makes this the least expensive X5. Love it.

Very impressive and well rounded
X5-45e, 05/04/2022
2022 BMW X5 xDrive45e 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
Bought 2022 45e some time back and loaded with each and every option that BMW offered. Came from 2018 Audi Q5 and we are very impressed with X5. It is extremely well rounded vehicle and electric capabilities are impressive.
- Consistently gets 40-45 miles on full charge (city driving). i have so far used only a single tank of gas and it involved a 300 mile highway trip with no charging … anywhere.
- Exclusive highway driving in Hybrid mode (which is quick as well) gets me around 35 mpg
- Very well integrated infotainment system compared to Audi MMI. It is not at all hard to learn as some people said. It is intuitive, easy to master and actually works. Voice commands work perfectly. App integration can be little better thou. BMW assistant is very impressive.
- Digital key works great with my apple devices
- Very comfortable ride (with air suspension) and fun to drive in hybrid and sport mode. Electric only mode as expected is more suitable for slower city driving.
- Lots of space (comparing to Q5)
- Luxurious and gorgeous interior, leather is supple (merino) and comfy
- Very impressive breaking capability. (I did opt for larger M sports breaks, although with regenerative breaking they do get less use, comes in handy when you are breaking hard)
Cons:
- 240V Level 2 charger is limited to 16 amps. Implies it takes me 4-6 hours to fully charge. BMW could have pushed to 32 amps?
- Rear seats are little straight and feel uncomfortable for longer journeys, kids are happy with them. But at 6'3" I don't find rear seats much comfy.
- Driver Assistance package is fun on highway or complete stop and go situations but for regular city driving (no traffic) it still needs some polishing. It give me creeps sometimes when it cant detect a lane but does give me enough warning.
- Parking assistance works but is slow in detecting spots. I only find it useful to impress the kids :)
- Steering is little numb specially on 40i version. I found 45e to be little better but my last Q5 definitely had better steering feel.
Considering you can still get $7500 federal credit on this vehicle, I don't see any reason to buy 40i version. I drove both and found 45e to have better steering response, more engaging drive (may be more weight helps) and plenty of power (actually more HP) for my daily driving needs.
Overall, we are very impressed on how well BMW has executed here. Perfect vehicle if you drive less than 50 miles a day and need extra oomph for weekend driving on mountains
