Best SUV on the market
Great fuel (diesel) mileage. Superior comfort ride. No air whistle noise doing 110 mph from Orlando to Miami. Handles the off road conditions very well. Towing 7600 lbs and it doesn't lose power. Excellent breaking system. And a superior sound system. Great paint job and very comfortable cockpit. The interior dash lights always get noticed. It lights up like a cockpit.
A car for all seasons
This is the most pleasant and versatile car I have ever owned. It rides like a limo on the road and takes to the field like a John Deere tractor. The V6 has enough power to get there and pass when needed but if you want a hot rod get the V8.

Lemony Fresh
I purchased my Touareg in Jan 2004, and by November had had it in the shop for more than one month. AC repeatedly loses freon, they can't find the leak. I've had the wiring harness replaced, battery replaced due to repeated shorts in the electrical system. Compass sensor and compressor replaced.I have to carry jumper cables in the car, never knowing when it will fail to start. When the electrical is dying, numerous faults will come on and auxiliary systems will begin to be shut down. This is still unresolved. I contacted VW of America and requested a replacement vehicle, they offered to, and did, reimburse me for two month's car payment. I'm still working thru my state's lemon law.
Look elswhere...
On paper this looks like the Ideal SUV but after purchasing and driving for just a few days I realized I was not happy. The seating is uncomfortable, I avg. 10.6 mpg in NYC stop&go traffic (I have a heavy foot), stereo lacks bass, Navi is sub-par compared to others & consistantly off actual car location, interior trim flaked, TPM system faults frequently and the VW dealer I dealt with was the actual worst dealer I have ever seen. After servicing anything on the car i always found something they damaged or did not replace/ fix to original condition! Fed up after only 10 months and traded for a acura with much better reliablity. Overall a very disappointing experience.
Disappointed Owner
My wife owned a 2001 Jetta & we traded in and bought a new Toureg (V8). Radio didn't work & one problem after another. Toureg has been in & out of the shop for repairs & some repeats. We asked VW to replace the car with a new one. Even the Service Mgr asked. They said NO, they will fix the problems. So our hands are tied, if we sell we lose thousands of dollars on this piece of junk. I NEVER wanted to buy a VW and but my wife liked the it. Now my wife regrets buying this. I'm sure other auto makers would have replaced this vehicle if it had so many issues.
Impressed
Exceptional safety feeling, did not have a single problem during 8 days family trip to west coast last winter. Perfect cruiser. I like the folding mirrors in narrow parking spots. Great great car.
DO NOT BUY THIS CAR
The Touareg on paper looks like the ultimate SUV: excellent perfomance on pavement and unbelievable off road ablility. The problem: it will be in the shop so often you will not be able to experience this theoretical performance very often. Over the first year of owning this car I have had multiple problems: stepper motor malfunction, poor remote range, door handle fell off, bizarre deafening fan noise that I was told is "normal", persistent wind noise from side mirrors, and others. And going to a VW dealer for repairs is no joy. They have no clue about customer service. The attitude of the service dept. is accusatory at best- like i caused all of the quality control problems. STAY AWAY TOUAREG.
Troublesome Touareg Tiresome
Pros: When it works right, AmaZING. Cons: VW is arrogant and insists that too many problems are within normal vehicle operating parameters. Driving experience: Drives nicely when aligned properly, which is rarely. Ooops, just hit a curb, need to bring it in again, now the truck is going to act squirrely again. This may have all the bells and whistles to go off road but there is a price to pay. If you off road on anything substantial, I can almost guarantee that you will damage one of the tires with a gash of some sort. And because this is an AWD vehicle, you will now need to replace ALL the tires in order to retain the proper handling dynamics and don't forget to re-align it. So On
Piece of Garbage
Don't let the great ride and fancy features fool you, if you get a 2004 it is a lemon. The Thing was in the shop more then I drove it. Lots of interior issues with falling apart, apparently there are 27 recalls and when I went to trade it in I lost about 12,000 in 6 months. No dealer would even take it, I had to bring it to carmax.
Best SUV
No problems at all for 8 months, just one oil change. Lots of power, very good handling and excellent off road delivery.
6 failures change tires @ 15k mi
Dash lights failed. Entire assembly needed to be replaced. Tires worn out at 15K. Dealer recommends alignment when tires changed. At slow speed turns it feels like the U joints are catching and releasing. Told it is caused by the tires that need to be replaced. Warning lights appear and need to be "recalibrated." Accelerator pauses occasionally. Told it was the brakes that don't allow the accelerator to function - not true. Very expensive car for this to happen in 6 months.
James F. Paronto
I have enjoyed the pleasure of driving this quality vehicle. Other than the Pirelli tires, the vehicle has been very reliable. However, if some problem does manifest itself, VW dealer has been most helpful in correcting the problem. I would think Volkswagon would take some responsibility for the lack of wear and realibility of these tires since it was VW's engineers that chose these tires for the production line. Stepping away from the tire issue is not a good way to resolve the issue.
As a Tow vehicle
I tow a 31' travel trailer and have found the Touareg to be a excellent tow vehicle. The six speed transmission along with the 310HP V8 do a very good job, much better than the full size PU I was using before. Also better gas mileage than before.
Can't go wrong
This vehicle will do everything you ask of it onroad or offroad. Safe, reliable, and plenty quick between traffic lights. Stops really well. great vehicle for long road trips. SatNav system is last generation CD instead of DVD. Air suspension works like a dream. No complaints in 1st year of ownership. This vehicle is the full deal.
ride professional - nav amateur
I tested many SUVs and my two finalists were the LR3 and the vw. The LR3 was lots of fun, but the vw had much superior handling. The drive for a vehicle this size is amazing. Not like the 530i I had just left, but much better than anything else I test drove. Still after 8K, it is a great driving vehicle. The gas mileage is very poor. The radio/navigation system is so poorly designed that I need much more than the 700 words alloted. If a fifth grader designed it he/she should not get to the 6th grade. I tried to get to VP Len Hunt in charge of this area, to tell him about the design flaws, but was told he does not take calls from owners. Now I know why this will never improve.
Who even knows?
After already going through one Touareg, I'm onto the next. My 2004 was replaced under the lemon law due to transmission problems and I received my '05 this past May. After driving the car for 3 months I noticed hesitations and horrible clunking noises during up/downshifts. The transmission in this car is downright scary. I have pulled out into intersections with plenty of time and the car hesitates and then takes off like no other. It is almost like the transmission has to think for a few seconds before it does anything. Sensors and warning lights going off at all times for no reason and horrible OEM tires. So far so good with the 2005, but stay away from the '04s.
Touareg the perfect 10 for midsize SUV
This vehicle is a perfect 10. Quality and performance what one expects from a solid, no mistakes superior build german vehicle. I know what I am talking about. I own a collision repair facility. Seing how some vehicles perform in crashes made me look even harder when I decided to by an SUV. I am absolutely thrilled and do not regret buying this vehicle one second. Recommend this vehicle highly. The fuel economy exceeded the posted sticker by far. I decided on the V6 with Pkg# 2, plus Sound System. That's all I needed. Have several other vehicles, so this one is for my pleasure only. And what a pleasure to drive it is. Advise: Buy it!
Outclasses the Rest
I live in Tokyo. In Japan base models come much better equipped than in N. America. I added an air suspension and leather package and only major thing missing is the s-roof & navigation. I've owned the Lexus RX (it's a 'Toyota' Harrier in Japan - which changes your mind quickly about how luxurious it is!) and the Mercedes-Benz ML 320. The Touareg's quality through and through outclasses these cars and many others I have tested. I have not had the problems many have written about (luckily?) and except for the V6 being a bit gutless this car is fun to drive (especially in sport shift mode and sport suspension!) and costs half as much as the Porsche Cayenne (no air suspension offered on base V6 there!). Off-roading was great as well!
Volkswagen Touareg
My Volkswagen Touareg is fun to drive. It has a great turn radius and power when you want it. It has a luxurious interior with nice fit and finish and good size. My truck has needed no service other than oil changes. Everything worked great right out of the showroom. I would purchase one again!
Excellent SUV
I like the Touareg. It has been very reliable and has lots of luxury items that would have cost an extra $20,000 in a BMW or a MercedesBenz.
Awesome
I love my Touareg, this is the fifth VW that I have owned. I have moved up a little bit each time. I started out with a Beetle and now own a Touareg. I love to drive it. People stop me all the time and ask if they can look in it. They can't believe that VW makes a SUV that look that good and has so many options standard. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a SUV.
Great Truck with Bad Acceleration
Overall, I'm very happy with this SUV. I get a lot of compliments on it and it drives beautifully. I do wish I had gotten a V8 (pun intended!) as the acceleration of the V6 model is poor. There have been a few issues with the transmission where, at low speeds, it will knock. I've also experienced a few weird electric issues, such as the radio ate my CD and the speakers make a popping sound when I arm and disarm the alarm.
Best looking SUV on the road today
We have not had one single problem with this vehicle. We love it. it's a great looking SUV.
Great Truck
This has been a great truck. It drives great and very comfortable. It's not like any other SUV. It handles better than most cars. I manage to get about 19-20 mpg on the highway. It's no econo-car, but it's not too bad considering. Compare that to a Lincoln Navigator. If you want to drive this vehicle in anything other than gas-miser mode (or pass someone), you need to switch the transmission from "D" to "S" or shift manually.... which is fine for me considering current gas prices.
Vdub SUV
The Volkswagen Touareg is one of the best vehicles on sale today!
2005 Touareg
I purchased a preowned 2005 Touareg with 8,000 miles on it. So far I have put on 2,000 miles in two months and I have truly enjoyed this machine. It has everything that I want in an SUV. I highly recommend the '05 model year.
Fun to Drive, Annoying Quirks
I have owned this car for a year and a half and it is a blast to drive. It begs "drive me faster." The keyless entry is great. The beeps are so anoying though, like the selt belt, passenger air bag off, and others. If I run into a store my wife has to bucle the seatbelt to make it stop dinging. The VW service department where I purchased my car is terrible. I needed new tires after only 6,000 miles, and my car can't stay aligned. So it has great performance, but the misc. problems make me want to sell it.
Touareg V6
I have enjoyed the handling and comfortable feel of this truck, especially on bumpy roads. It is firm and solidly built. The driveshaft gave up at 17,056 miles of smooth highway driving though.
All Hype and Big Let Down
I bought the '05 Touareg off a dealer lot thinking I was saving money on a loaded Luxury SUV with 6,000 miles on it. The first night in my garage the battery died and the key was stuck in the ignition. Then a couple of weeks later the sunroof leaked. Then I noticed moisture in the rear tail light. The SUV's engine sounds rough at low speeds and the disc brakes grab to a startling stop. Oh, and the tires, be ready to replace them at about 15,000 miles. Now for the worst part, the gas mileage, LOL. You better be prepared for a shock there. I averaged 10.75 mpg city and 14 Hwy! Now you ask, why did you buy it? All impulse and the ride is nice, but VW has a sub par product here for a lot of money.
Eight Month Driving Experience
We previously owned a 2004 VW Beetle Convertible and traded into this. We do no off-roading, but loved the body style and needed more room. After eleven months of ownership, I have one chief complaint and that is my Pirelli tires after 17,500 miles are gone. I have been diligent about rotation and inflation, per manufacturer's instructions, but this problem really has me on fire. I to replace them after eleven months of ownership with another brand (Michelin), will cost me $1,200. I have been told by tire manufacturers that the most I could expect to get out of a set of tires would probably be 25,000 miles.
Structure
I recently hit a large buck in my Touareg. Although the buck was large enough to total a car, my Touareg handled it perfectly (like the tank it is) and got me safely through the accident with minimal damage. Although it has lousy fuel economy, when it comes down to safety, the Touareg is an excellent vehicle to drive where I live in Pennsylvania where there are LOTS of deer.
Great SUV
The Volkswagen Touareg is a great car. I have a Toyota SUV, but I like this one better. It is great on the highway and in local traffic. The turning radius is unbelievable.
My VW
My Touareg is two years old now and it still looks brand new. It has a very nice ride. I love the heated seats in the winter.
Buy new or used, it's awesome!
Bought this SUV 10/05 after looking at MB500. VW is so much quieter. No problems in 18k miles! I love this vehicle and its durability, wear and tear. Everyone who has sat in it wants to borrow it when additional space is needed - they'd buy but can't afford it. Great family car - whether you have kids or just a dog like me! So much fun in the winter and summer! Definitely will buy another after this hits higher miles.
The best SUV I've ever driven!!
This is hands down the best SUV I have ever driven. I considered 8 others and the Touareg is the best SUV for the money. It's not a "soccer mom" car. It's an SUV that's fun to drive, has lots of options and drives like a car. I recommend this vehicle if you like quality and performance.
Love it, but...
I purchased my VW new with only 13 miles on it. I have to say, I love this car, I like how it drives and the pure power. The only down side are the brakes and tires. I had the first set of tires replaced at 8700 miles under the tire warranty, I still had to pay $220.00. Then the brakes at 15000 miles, that was $600.00. Now at 27000 miles I need another set of tires. For some reason the car loves to wear out the tires. I take it to the VW dealer every 5000 miles for its oil change and tire rotation. So a car that is two years old with 27000 miles has a new set of brakes and rotors, and on it's third set of tires. Be prepared to spend some money!
Great buy!
Was lucky enough to buy a 2005 V6 with only 8000 miles, now up to 12000 miles. Free of any problems so far. I love to drive it; it is luxurious with a quiet ride, has an impeccable interior, great handling, feels solid and very safe, definitely underpowered with the v6, recommend driving in the S mode, transmission and shifting is great, heavy and poor acceleration especially when compared with my 2006 X3. The stereo system is disappointing at any volume above 21 (especially the bass). If economy is not your concern, buy the V8 or V10 diesel version.
Great Ride!
It gets about 15 mpg , not bad for a V8 and heavy vehicle. Great drive, great audio system, very luxurious inside. There have been several reliability issues, but I think after 2004 many things have been fixed. The power window switches are white plastic, painted black, the paint comes off easily. The air suspension had a new compressor put in at 22,000 miles and the tires are getting work out (19" Pirellis), gonna try Michelin next. A seatbelt seized up in the rear, and one headlight had a bad connection. I still love this car! It gets lots of compliments.
Very Satisfied
Have owned many different makes and models including several sports cars, The VW Touareg ranks right at the top for fun, comfortable, capable transportation. It has proven to be perfect mechanically requiring nothing other than routine maintenance and 3 :( sets of high performance 19" tires. This is a heavy, powerful vehicle that is a little rough on the sticky OEM tires. Highly recommend - you will not be disappointed. 17.8 MPG
Have 65,000 miles on, awesome!
I have over 65,000 miles on my v-8 touareg the most of anyone i know of. Best of the best in all, nice price and very quiet. I purchased some 26 inch spinning rims for it and it looks like a beast!
Perfect blend
I bought one of the first ever. I love the interior, the solidity, and aside from some minor problems, the ride.
my experience
We are very happy with our SUV. It not only does it do well off-road, it is exceptional in the city. We park it on the street and are confident in its safety and reliabilty.
Beautiful Car
I extensively researched this car before purchase. Its exterior design is unique and the interior is luxurious and comfortable. The car (related to the Porsche Cayenne) appears to be worth more than what I paid for it. Also some great deals on 2005 models. Fit and finish are excellent - I poured over every square inch of it and didnt find any defects. Nada! No excess carpeting, paint overspray, etc. One complaint is the back seat leg room is a little tight - the middle hump doesnt help. Also steering wheel and air conditioning controls are complicated - will have to take some time learning. I look forward to 36 months and/or 36,000 miles of pure enjoyment! LOL
ok

VW Touareg iis Awesome
Fun to drive Awesome car
I love it
Luxery combined with dependability
Head rests
Lot of fun to drive off road. The head rest for the back seat are in the way so they are the first thing to take out of the car.
One of the Best SUVs Available
The Volkswagen Touareg may not be the fastest in its class, it does not get the best fuel economy, but it is well built and reliable. Those are important features to me.
VW Touareg V8 - Awesome
I love my Touareg. It runs well my only complaint would be the periodic engine light coming on. The dealer is great. I really love this truck.
