overall fabulous
It's beautiful; there's plenty of room inside. I'm 5'2" and my husband is over 6 feet; we both feel comfortable behind the wheel. The adaptive cruise is amazing! My one complaint is the shifting. Previous car was a Subaru Outback - which wasn't very powerful, but had very smooth gear transition. This one seems to have more power, but shifts from gear to gear with a noticeable ... jump? Sport mode is much smoother, but is less fuel efficient. Admittedly, I have only had the car for 24 hours, but I have never (46 years) driven a car with this harsh of a shift. I could shift smoother manually in my old Miata!

Love Love Love
This is my first VW and I couldn't be more impressed. I had a Volvo previously and my standards are pretty high. The ride is comparable to a luxury vehicle and the redesigned body and interior are superior quality. I highly recommend if you want a beautiful suv at a great price.

Long term- 46k mile/48month review
I signed a four year lease on the 2018 Tiguan in October 2017. I really wanted to love the vehicle. VW did a great job with its design. Everyone thought my Tiguan was a BMW X3. For the first four months, the car drove like a dream. I didn’t agree with the majority of reviews and found the Tiguan to be perfectly zippy around town. It also handled and cornered well. Over time, problem after problem developed. The car also started to feel sloppy, and there was just gradually more body roll. By the third year, the Tiguan was not enjoyable to drive and was sometimes scary. The biggest issue lies with engine troubles. My EPC and emissions control module had to be replaced 4 and 3 times respectively. Just before the EPC warning would come on, the engine would sputter and respond erratically. Once the EPC light comes on, the car limits you to 4000 RPM max (although the warning message is deceiving and it feels actually closer to 1200). You can’t accelerate and have to immediately pull over, turn the car off and back on. VW was never able to figure out what caused this - blaming it on altitude, 91 octane fuel, the start/stop system, etc. The next biggest issue is the Front Assist system. It would errantly activate and slam on my brakes; often when there was no traffic and no hazards on the road. Frightening and dangerous! My Tiguan also needed an alignment done. No biggie, right? $100.00 at any Les Schwab or Brakes Plus? Not so with VW’s equipped with Front Assist or Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). My dealer and VW Corporate insisted that an alignment must be done simultaneously with ACC re-calibration. They will not do one without the other. Does VW’s limited warranty cover ACC re-calibration? No!!!!! My dealer charged $700 for an alignment and ACC re-calibration. VW Corporate was not sympathetic. I could not find anything in the owner’s manual which confirmed that an alignment couldn’t be done without calibrating the ACC. VW doesn’t mention this anywhere in its advertisements of these safety features. I paid $4,000 for extra technology which unbeknownst to me would inflate the cost of a routine maintenance item (alignment) by 700%. Among other annoyances, the car would hesitate to accelerate anytime it was cold or the AC was on. Responsiveness to the gas pedal was inconsistent and erratic. Although there was no issue if the car was in “sport” mode (making me think this is a programming issue that VW could easily fix hit hasn’t). Finally: at 45k miles, the battery died and the rear brakes needed to be replaced. My VW Dealer insisted that VW batteries must be “programmed” and wanted $800.00, warning me I’d void the warranty by going to an auto parts store to buy a normal priced battery. (I took the risk and my AutoZone battery worked great for 1/4th of the price. No issues, no warning lights!). Finally, all four brakes wore unevenly (inner/outer were totally uneven on each axle) due to an issue with the brake calipers. This is a known issue, but VW didn’t help cover the cost. In fact, the dealership wanted $2,500 for a brake job! Moral of the story, don’t buy a VW. My entire family has leased VWs for 25 years. Not a single one has had a significant problem until the 2018 model year. The new ones have been total lemons! VW corporate has also become much less compassionate and helpful, seemingly since paying out after dieselgate. Now they won’t budge, admit fault, or help customers at all.
First Time VW
So far I am very pleased with my 2018 Tiguan. Love the style, comfort, and overall cool of the car. Reminds me a bit of an X5 not on steroids. Biggest downside for me is it is not a 6 cylinder. How I miss a 6 cylinder's power. If it came in a 6 cylinder and did not have the 8 gear shift this probably would be rated a 10 for me. The 4 cylinder is just not enough power to my liking but what it has done is make me drive a lot more conservative, be it accelerating or jetting around town. The 8 gear shift is a bit annoying in that it shifts so much through acceleration to cruise. But I guess its an efficiency thing. The other super annoying feature is the auto stop shut off. Oh that is SO annoying for your car to start and stop. But hence Praise God they gave you the option to shut it off manually each time you drive! Hallelujah. That feature on cars today is super annoying! So so far I'm a month into it and I love my first VW and the model I chose. I would highly recommend if in the market like we were for a medium size SUV similar to an Acura RDX or Subaru., which were our next choices before VW.

Sporty luxury for new mom
Love my new Tiguan. To be fair it is my 4th VW so i am biased. I had 3 VW golfs before this. This is a huge step up from those cars. I have a 6week old baby and needed something bigger but still nimble enough to get around the city. I agonized over this or the CRV or Rogue. So happy with my decision. Just love the way the Tiguan handles, the cargo space, etc.
