Solid, Well-designed and great MPG

The Volkswagen TDI SEL 2.0 is a very good highway car in the $30k range with a strong turbo assisted diesel and great milage. In eight months, I am approaching 18k miles and am averaging 42 mpg which includes a good mix of bumper to bumper stop and go Tollway driving as well as open highway cruising. As pro reviewers stated, it's solid and very roomy. The radio display is a bit boring with a basic red on black display and the response time is slow from pressing the touch screen to seeing anything happen. ( The screen is not an iPad) The Fender stereo setup is decent for the price range.

A solid and reliable car that should endure

The conservative but stylish european-esque design should keep this car looking fresh while many competitors designs become dates looking over the years. The ride quality is solid without being too stiff. The thing I love about this car the most is the fuel economy of the TDI, VW certainly undersells the MPG. Most long term reviews state that they easily exceeded the MPG rating, and that's been true for us. Our typical combined MPG during a normal driving day is right at 40mpg. The interior is massive compared to other's in the midsize class. I'm 6'2" and this is the first car in which I didn't have to put the driver's seat all the way back and I can stretch my legs out in the rear

Love my 2015 TDI SEL Passat. The gas mileage is so good I wonder why people even consider hybrids. I average 40MPH and consistently get 49 highway. Comfort, performance, build quality. This car has all the bases covered. The Fender Sound system is really nice. The back seat is extremely roomy for a car this size. If there is a gripe it is the lag of the rearview camera when the car is started. But being a diesel the car should idle a bit before leaving anyways. Perhaps that is why it does that. But that is being really picky. Some say the styling isn't in your face enough, I say class doesn't need to be in your face. This car's looks are timeless & will look as good in 10 years as it does now.

I bought this car on Sept. 16 2015, two days before the crap hit the fan with the emission scandal. I traded in a 2013 Passat TDI SE, which I thought was a great car. My 2015 Passat TDI SEL has been trouble free, I average 37mpg around town and have had it get 52-54mpg on the highway. It's comfy, handles better than my old Mustang SVO, and has pretty decent performance out of engine. I don't find turbo lag to be a problem and the DSG gearbox is quick shifting and I like the downshift feature when braking going downhill. After the emission settlement is final, I'm going to keep the car, take the bribe money, and let them upgrade the emissions.

I love my Passat. The quality is far better than what is being offered by competitors. The drive is amazing. This is my 3rd Diesel VW product. I drive over 30K miles a year and have never had more than routine maintenance performed. NEVER one quality issue in over 300K miles driven. And the service is great. Free loaners, they wash your car, and the intervals are 10K miles not 5 or less like most cars. By far the most economical car to own compared to the competition. My wife was a Honda girl but she is a convert and also has a VW now. You cannot go wrong with a VW diesel.

Purchased this car after the recall of my Jetta TDI . I upgraded to the Passat because I wanted more space and the Passat delivered. I miss my manual drive and wish the Passat came with Manual and a sunroof. Because the manual drive did not have sunroof I went with Automatic. I live on a steep hill and I use the Automatic with downshift option when climbing this hill in particular. The fuel economy is terrific and I get 40mpg with normal driving. I highly recommend. The passat has a backup camera which I use daily to assist in parallel parking outside my home. It is a great car and I highly recommend. I take to the mountains here in CA to go skiing and the car performs well climbing into the mountains and handling on the winding roads. We use the heated seats on cold days. The back seat and trunk are very roomy. Bluetooth and sd card on stereo get a lot of use. When I go to the oil change places they never have the oil filter for passat tdi. I order replacement oil filters and other filters on amazon without problem. I have 80k miles so far and no major issues whatsoever.

2015 TDI SEL Premium, Black. Bought it with 18K miles after the fiasco. It is German Engineering which most either love or can live without, yet at a price greatly reduced from Audi, yet with many of the high $ fun stuff packages. I fall into the former category. Fun and reliable. VW dealer oil change for the TDI with fuel filter is $84, every 10K miles. Timing replacement spec'd @ 120K, VW dealer estimated @ $500. Spec sheet says 30 town and 42 Highway; with 50K miles on the car, I am getting right at both or a shade higher. Love the ride. Only slight mod I made is an upgraded set of Yokohama Low Pro tires one size larger than OEM. I like the DSG with its Normal mode/Sport mode and then shift lever to right for the manual option. The car interior..i.e. audio system is simple and the Fender audio system is a favorite of my teenage sons! And talk about roomy! Again, I paid twice this price for wife's Acura and it feels like a compact compared to this.

VW paid me to buy another one

I've driven diesels since 1983, and was still driving the Mercedes I bought in 1988 in 2012 because they weren't bringing anything I wanted to the USA. Because the car was a stick shift, still looked near-new with 297,000 miles on it, someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a car that was getting seriously outdated technologically. I checked the diesels available, including VW, and soon after bought a Jetta TDI 6M because the dealer called me with a bargain offer. Someone loved their Jetta TDI so much, they traded it after only 10 months for a similar Passat. Price was great. And...I liked it too, but kept it and just bought a 2014 Passat TDI 6M in addition. REALLY loved that car, but in Spring 2018 VW decided the few hundred stick-shift Passat TDI's were too hard to write new software for, and notified me it had to be sold back to them. So I located an auto broker who had just bought two trailer loads of VW's from the company, and two of them where 2015 TDI 6M's one with very low mileage when it was "sequestered". Stick shifts weren't popular in his city, and he offered it to me for over $10,000 less than VW had paid me for my 2014. The car has the new "Euro 6" diesel, which meets US and European emissions limits honestly. Some of the interior has been cheapened a little, and I swapped many switches, the seats, interior lighting, and some trim, from my 2014 to the 2015 before selling it back to VW. They said they didn't care. Driving it home the 350+ miles from the broker, on mostly Interstate with the cruise set on 82 mph, and about 80 miles of rural 2-lane, I got 54.9 mpg. That's about 3 mpg better than my 2014 with the older engine (which is the same as the one in my Jetta TDI, which has been trouble-free at 95,000 miles). With its 240 ft/lb of torque as low as 1,500 rpm it has ample freeway acceleration, its ride is superb, handling excellent for a FWD car (I own and drive sports cars), and as everyone notes, passenger and luggage space is astounding. The dimensions and body shell are about identical with the Audi A6, yet the Passat gets 2+ extra inches of rear leg room, without giving up trunk space or front passenger space. How?? I have not had to test the stability control on this car, but it is essentially the same as on the Jetta TDI - and I HAVE tested that: cresting a slight to an overpass at 75 mph in the Interstate, traffic was at a complete standstill due to an accident, and in the half-second it took me to realize the situation, I also noted there were several chain-reaction rear-end collisions right in front of me as a result. Knowing I had stability control, I jammed on the brakes, steered onto the left shoulder, right wheels on asphalt and left wheels on grass which sloped steeply left to a drainage channel in the center of the median as the Interstate sloped downward from the overpass I'd just crossed. And doing still over 50 mph, the car did not swerve, did not slide down the hill and overturn, it simply juddered a bit and stopped. beside about the 3rd car in the line. And, as the car behind me hit the car I had been behind. You can tell I think VW has done a good job on the stability control's logic. I don't really expect this Passat to be "nearly new" as it nears 300,000 miles like my last Mercedes was. That was a car designed to be "the European/world taxi" as well as a nice passenger car, and there are many, many in Europe with over 2 million miles. But the last of VW's TDI's with the 2015 Euro 6 motor they currently use there (and the most popular motor in Europe in their larger cars) is a fine car, made in Chattanooga TN thought it may be, with the motor shipped in and installed. They haven't used the diesel in the US in 2017 or 2018, but the new[ish] turbo4 gasoline engine does a great job, has almost the power of the diesel, and since you probably like automatic cars instead of the stick shifts I use exclusively, you'll find the Passat an amazing bargain. A big, comfortable, great handling, economy car. Say what?! Update 08/05/2020. I’ve continued to be happy with this car, getting 39-41 mpg around town and 53-54 mpg on Interstates. I appreciated being able to twice make a 700 mile trip without having to refuel, needing only a picnic lunch and mask (restroom!) to stop at rest areas prepared for the Covid-19 pandemic. No mechanical issues other than a major clutch job I knew would be needed the day I bought the car - the first owner clearly didn’t usually drive straight shift cars. It took a bit of of the $10,000 “discount” (see above) but not too much. Comfort, spaciousness, road noise suppression, still amaze me for the price range. And my worries about repairs to a rare Euro 6 diesel have faded as VW has not reduced their use in all other markets, with diesels continuing to be in 3/4 of their cars outside the USA.

We bought this car for work commute. The vehicle rides and drives great. It is a sedan but handles like a sports car. Fuel echos terrific averaging about 48 miles a gallon. It’s a diesel so that helps with the fuel economy but it’s no hot rod. It still has pretty good pep but yet it’s still comfortable for us. It’s a great car for the money.

2015 Passat tdi sel

I bought my 2015 Passat brand new in February of 2015, it is now July of 2020. Iv put over 170k on this car in 5 years and 5 months. I absolutely love this car and am very happy I went with the 2.0 turbo diesel over the v6 that I almost went with. I have had no major issues other than having to replace my timing belt at about150k when Volkswagen suggest I believe you do it at 100k. Also the passenger side door speaker blew but in all honesty I do beat the snot out of the factory fender sound package. I average 45mpg and the car runs as good as the day I purchased it. I can’t stress enough how well this car still runs after 170k. Besides the reliability and fuel efficiency even after 5 years this car still looks sharp and has aged very well and I still get complements on how nice the design and overall look of the car is. The factory fender sound system is better than the base sound package but in all honesty I don’t think it’s anything real special Iv heard better factory sound systems-and the touch screen can be a bit laggy at times but that’s not what I bought this car for so it’s a moot point for Me. The car is comfortable and has a ton of leg room for front and rear passengers I just wish the arm rest for the front was a bit bigger , there really isn’t much to rest your arm on but it’s not the worst Iv ever seen. But yeah if your looking for a reliable comfortable commuter with good space and excellent fuel economy than I’d take a serious look at the 2015 Passat tdi, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Just be sure to keep up on your oil changes and fuel filter change every other oil change and you should be able to enjoy this car for a long time. Also this year has the def (adblue) that you must have for the car to run. Any def fuel is perfectly fine to run in this car it doesn’t have to be the adblue from the Volkswagen dealer and I usually top that off every oil change but you get well over 10k miles per tank of def fuel.

It is too bad that vw has decided to not continue with the diesel motor. Great economy rivaling many hybrids with great performance. Only downside is with the lack of modern technogy package, no apple car play or other things like active cruise control, Blind spot monitoring etc.

When the service engine light goes off, its at least a $500 (part alone). Not including labor. Special diesel oil and a lot of dealer parts because parts stores don't carry most of the parts.

A true manual would be awesome, but I'm a purist. At 603 and 300 lbs. getting in/out is troublesome, but its a great ride for long distances. Maintenance free. Just change the oil every 10K. For diesel change the fuel filter every 40-50K miles too.

Great Until the Turbo Blew Up

I had a 2013 Passat TDI SE that was great and part of the buyback program. About a month before I was supposed to sell it back to VW, the Turbo blew up around 80k miles. The car was in the shop for 2 months. What happened was the turbo blew metal into the engine and destroyed the engine, at least that is what they told me. So, the car had a new turbo and a new engine that had to be flown from Germany. I would have expected that the turbo not blow up and destroy the engine, but... I was disappointed. Had I been planning on keeping the car that would have been great, but knowing that there are issues with the turbos on these cars, unless you plan on installing a new one that isn't junk, then I would steer clear of the car. When I bought the car, I bought the extended warranty, which cost around $1800. The repair total on the engine replacement and turbo was close to $9000, so thankfully I bought that.

Avoid German cars especially VW

Art Brockmeyer, 07/20/2021

My first brand new car, a 2015 Passat has been a nightmare. The following were serviced/replaced OUT of warranty: Upholstery torn from normal use w/less than 10K miles on driver’s seat; heated seats only work on high, generator, 2 batteries, air conditioning compressor, water pump, (there are 3 water pumps and thermostats on this diesel). Car broke down between Berkeley and S Lake Tahoe, due to overheating. Radiator/hose fitting cost $100 for a part that costs about $20 for other cars. L Rear pwr window motor does not work. Warning lights on dash give false positives or go on/off intermittently including tire pressure measuring light. I settled w/ VW on EPA emissions scandal for $8,000 plus a $1,000 Visa Card plus $500 VW Service/Accessories. Have put over $6K in car repairs that have nothing to do with the Diesel engine elements. My mechanic says German cars are the HIGHEST in maintenance costs. BMW, VW, AUDI, MERCEDES are in his shop ALL the time. The only one that is reliable is PORSCHE, and who can afford one. My Passat drove great on test drive and has fantastic cabin room and a huge trunk. I paid $30K for this car and I expected it to be somewhat reliable. Now, heater still doesn’t work, heat/ac motor sounds like it is acting up and still praying for proper engine cooling. I will not buy another VW or any German car. Next time a Chevy Impala, Toyota Camry or Honda Civic. Sorry VW. I’m hoping my Passat will at least limp down the road until this clown car is paid off!

The car that keeps on giving

Who knew that this car would essentially pay for itself? We bought this car in February 2015, and 7 months later, we learned that Volkswagen had done some things that were less than ethical in order to get it to meet EPA requirements. I am all about protecting the environment, but this is ridiculous- the car gets nearly 50 mpg's on the highway while cruising at 75mph. Are you telling me that the GMC Yukon I just passed (while driving up a mountain in 6th gear because of the amazing torque) is better for the environment than this car? You don't really appreciate a car like this until you start trying to shop for a replacement. The fact is, there is nothing equivalent in terms of how spacious, fun and economic this car is. Forget getting a 6 speed manual with heated pleather seats in anything else. We've looked at a host of other cars and there are always multiple trade offs. This is the ultimate road trip car, even with 2 small children and a babushka in the back. So why don't we just get "the fix" and take the VW payout? Well, as much as we love this car, I do not want to have to pay for repairs once the warranty finally expires. There is a lot of technology in this car, and it is always very expensive to fix. We have had a few issues in the 2 short years we've owned it- warped rotors, a leaky adblue system, and a clogged dpf, all fixed for free under warranty. This is enough persuasion for us to let VW have it back. We are going to wait until the very last possible moment to do the buyback- December 2018, and in the meantime, continue to drive the hell out of it and do no other maintenance other than oil and fuel filter changes. At that point, with bald tires and a mileage projection of right around 40k, VW is going to pay us out 5k more than we originally paid for the car. They have also given us $1000 just for our patience, and we hear we're getting another $350 from Mr. Robert Bosch for his role in the scandal. When we finally turn it in, we will have driven this car for free for about 3 1/2 years. At that point, we will likely replace the car with an all wheel drive hybrid or if they do in fact find their way to the US market, a Mazda diesel. We are sad that VW is no longer making diesels- the Atlas and the All Road would have been great platforms for diesel, and probably could have kept our business in the VW family.

Great engine and styling. Bad everything else

Got a 6M SE TDI new a few months before Dieselgate occurred. Took the settlement and kept the car. Owned it for 8 years and enjoyed it for 3. The last 5 were horrible. The pros: It looks great, totally timeless. Compare it to a 2015 Accord, the Passat looks sleeker and has a better interior. Minimalist luxury. The engine. I had issues with everything, except the engine. 40+ MPG and 600 miles a tank at least. Smooth, no whining, no burning oil. Nothing wrong. The cons: Repairs. The brake caliper on the back left had to be replaced twice for being permanently engaged twice. Once under warranty and once not. Like 1k lost. Water pump and timing belt had to be replaced twice. I guess it was made out of cheap plastic and there's a recall now. Water pump cracked so you got to replace that and the timing belt together. Noticed the first time when the engine temp would rise unless I pressed the clutch in. Few grand each. DEF lines leaking. That happened so I ran out of DEF quickly and wondered "what's up?" yep it's leaking so there we go. This was covered under warranty I think due to it being extended for diesel related parts. Clutch gave out in the low 100s, so that happened. That alone was like 3000. Sure you can blame me sucking at driving but that never happened with my old Accord. If you can find one for under 5000 and the last guy already fixed it go ahead. If not, don't. Money pit

My gas cap won't open, every time I go outside my trunk is open, when I try to close it, it pops back open and just beeps like I locked the car, and if you get your keys wet your SOL because they don't have key holes.

2015 brought the newest 2.0 Diesel engine with better performance and a simplified Diesel engine. I’ve owned VW diesels since 1985 and have always been a fan. After they bought me out of my 2010 during dieselgate I’ve owned 3 more but when I purchased the 2015 manual I realized this was the “ONE” to keep. You almost cannot find them anymore especially in a 2015 manual. Avg 50+ mpg in mixed driving after re-tuning which also increases HP and Torque 196k miles and all is well.

This my first new car since 2009 I had a Camry. With this price there are no other models that come close.
