Used 1999 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan Consumer Reviews
Never a VW again!!!!
1. I heard a big noisy explosion under the hood, the fumes were coming out everywhere, it was the battery that exploded covering all the engine with acid, 2. a fuse block that started to smoke, dealership said everything was fine, came back and had to use the extinguisher to fight the flames coming out of the battery, battery case, fuse blocks and everything around it. 3. had to replace the mass flow sensor (twice) 4. Glove box replaced (twice), 5. O2 sensor, 6. Replace tail lights every three months, 7. having to clean that yellow ooze coming down from the doors,8. Now it's overheating but dealer said there is no problem...
Overall, great car!
I'm sorry others have had so much frustration with their Jettas. I had a bunch of things go wrong in the first 6 months, but they were all fixed under warranty, so I don't really mind. Nothing has broken twice and nothing has broken out of warranty (36,000 miles in the first year). This dealer and service department are top-notch. I drive an hour for service -- even for oil changes! They are as cheap as Jiffy-lube, and they know it's a VW, not a "Volvo" like JL tried to tell me.
My Wolfsburg
I recently bought this car and so far it has been a very reliable car and is extremly fun to drive. The car has nice performance and is very easily upgradable.
A Huge Disappointment!!
Within 2 months, my O2 sensor needed replacing. Then I had a brake light that refused to flicker but stayed on. Thank god I was still under warranty! Less than a year later, my speedometer dropped and after two diagnostic tests, it was revealed I need a new instrument cluster. Soon after another O2 sensor was required. Then, following the O2 sensor recall, I was back in the shop for a Mass Air Flow sensor replacement. Also, the metal under my backseat window moldings began rusting within 2 years. Overall, you're better putting your money into KMart than a 99 GL Jetta.
Not a fan
This car has a few MAJOR flaws. The electrical system is junk. I have had the left rear power window go out several times. The wiring is poor. It is also expensive to have repaired. It drives well and gets reasonable gas milage. If I were to buy another (which I won't) I would get the basic version. Less things to have problems with.
