Good Little Car
The car has zip, is good on gas, and seems to be overly reliable. The craftmanship is not of the best quality. The driver's side door lock fell out onto the ground when I inserted the key about one month after I purchased the vehicle. Also, the car door moldings have started to fall off, car alarm doesn't always activate when doors are locked, and dashlights flicker on and off. Other than these few minor problems I am satisfied with the vehicle and think it was a wise first car purchase.
Not worth it
Pretty good car to drive, but not worth it to maintain. Repairs are too expensive and it needs plenty of them. This one I had is high mileage, but from 130-160k it has needed a new master brake cylinder, bad cruise control, lost a door lock, speedo and tach work intermittently (messes up inpection), horn stuck on, wheel bearings, struts, timing belt, distributor (still worked but tripped the check engine light and prevented inspection - nice design) and now a transmission and clutch. That about does it for this car. Its heading for the nearest cliff. I won't be getting another VW unless I get real ambitious for a BioDiesel project. Interior design is stupid. no glovebox.

Worst car ever built
Volkswagon quality really went out the window for this car. Trunk leaks, burns oil very quickly, sunroof comes off track, paint faded unevenly (VW did pay for a repaint but only after dozens of call and complaints), both driver and passenger key lock mechanisms have been replaced, new chip replaced very reluctantly by VW 1 month after owning it(only after threatening to VW that I wanted my money back). Interior electrical has been a problem since day one and finally found out that it was a design issue but would cost me to fix. I have been able to get certain VW sales reps to talk about the cars off th record confirming certain VW products as JUNK...high end products are the total opposite.
Do Not Buy This Vehicle
My wife has this car and the annual cost of maintenance is $3,000. This includes fixing things like essential safety equipment - the airbags broke and VW was not helpful in fixing this problem. Every single thing on this car has broken at one time or another. It has been given all of the necessary care which should keep a car in better than average running order, yet everything brakes regardless of the care level it is given. Example: the cruise control has never worked, and the dealer can't fix the problem! DO NOT BUY this lemon of a vehicle.
Terrible car
I was horrified at the reliability and the cost of maintenance of this car. A Volkswagon person for over 20 years, this is the last VW I will ever buy. VW's are now all made in Mexico, and are unfortunately not the same cars they used to be.
