So I Bought It from an Old Lady
Well I bought my 1995 Volkswagen Jetta as a junior in high school. It was a great car to drive to school in, 32 miles each way. I have been doing a lot of work to keep it on the road, and parts are extremely expensive, and the aftermarket is almost non-existent. For a small car though, it is great, because I am 6'3" and fit with some room to spare, as long as no one sits behind me.
Jetta Takes the Worry Out of Older Cars
I owned my Jetta GL sedan for five years. It has exceptionally dependable. I replaced the tires and brakes, but nothing major went wrong with this car. You just have to look out for their electrical issues, little things going wrong, like sensitive wires and switches that seem to go haywire. If you can tolerate the few quirks, these little cars can't be beat for dependability! I am afraid to own anything else because this little car was so great. It has a wonderful ride on the interstate, it is smooth, and comfortable. The back seats fold down to haul larger items. My money was well spent on this car.

Great Car for the money
I don't know what these other people are talking about, but I can tell you that the GLX is the best. It gets decent gas milage, is reliable, and mine currently has 175,000 miles on this bulletproof VR6 engine. As long as you do basic maintainence every so often, you'll be fine. The only knock against this car is the classic VW interior problems. Door knobs, window controls, alarm problems, stupid stuff like that breaks. If you're halfway mechanically minded you can fix it by yourself everytime, and the motor and tranny will NEVER let you down.
