The Van I Love and Hate

I bought my 1993 Volkswagen EuroVan for the interior space, which is phenominal! You can fit anything you need to into it from building materials to furniture to people. BUT it has been a pit that I have sunk a lot of money into repairing over and over. I've been towed so often the local towtruck driver knows it's me as soon as he gets the call! I love my van - I an just so disappointed that it hasn't been reliable. It is now worth more in parts than as a whole. I can't sell it because I love it, but can't drive it because it won't stay running.

Bought the Eurovan with a wheelchair lift to haul my mom & dad around. Drove it 2200 miles with them. No big problems: New tires, changed oil, change brake fluid and had to fix ECU (vacuum tube had gone out) Fun to drive, great road view, lot of room for things. Cheap interior parts, electrical parts cheap too

Great Multifunctional Vehicle

From the conversion items to the VW mfrs stock unit, this is a reliable, roomy and multifunctional car for families and people with an adventurous spirit. Refrigerator, stove, sink, storage and many extras make this the van for going anywhere, doing anything. We particularly appreciated the safety of smoke alarms, carbon mono alarms and propanes warning systems. There is space for up to six passengers and engine accessibility with a 2nd battery for the extras. At 18 mpg and a V6 engine that easily takes the mountains without a strain, this is the vacation and/or in-town vehicle that does it all. We had virtually no engine problems as yet at 63k.

VW Camper, The best engine yet

I have owned 6 VW camper vans, and the 1997 model with the 6 cyl engine, has finally gotten enough power to adequately move the vehicle. Earlier 4 cyl versions were plagued with under powered engines, which burned out quickly in South FLorida. I understand that the1997 engine is the same as used on Audi. I have had no problems at all, except the air conditioning, which had to have the compressor replaced. Still get 20 mpg on the highway under normal conditions.

Neat car, fun to drive, a little different - not a lot on the road. Throttle has an inherent lag which is a bit annoying and takes a little practice to drive smoothly. This is especially true when cold. Heated seats are a joy. The interior heating system provides way more heat and faster than you'll experience in any other brand. Parts prices are reasonable. Shop charges can be high so it's helpful if you can do some of the rudimentary work yourself. Fit, finish and rustproofness are outstanding as is visibility. Brakes are above average. Very comfortable and stable vehicle. It's heavy weight contributes a lot to that.
